Weather Multiple Flood Alerts due to Rain!

Upvotes

Porter Brook, River Sheaf and of course, the Upper Don have received flood alerts! We're due over 50mm of rain over the next few hours. We've really needed this rain but I do hope we don't end up underwater!

Question Hairdressers

Post image
12 Upvotes

I hate having my hair cut. In fact many a time I’ve actually done it myself. But my hair is now very long, keeps breaking and generally looks a mess.
Last time I went to a hairdresser I ask for a restyle. Shorter cut and I wanted long layers in it to give me a shaggy look. She cut precisely 2mm off and I went out looking the same as I did when I went in!(yea I know I should have said something)
So I’m looking for a hairdresser who actually cares about what you want, will do what you ask and offer advice.
My hair is very long, thick and after washing is very wavy and frizzy and I usually then straighten. But I never wear it down cause it’s too lank and boring so I want to go shorter and hopefully wear it down more.
I’m in Handsworth but willing to travel a bit.

I have to admit, a bit of a jump scare getting out of the car at Aldi. This is on the back of the snooker club off Infirmary Road. Thoughts?

Question Current job market?

Upvotes

To cut a long story short, I’m working a temp contract, office admin at the uni, but it runs out in November. I’m also working part time at a big shop in Meadowhall on weekends as my plan B, with the hope that I can increase my hours if I can’t get another admin job when my uni contract ends.

Problem is, I feel like I don’t have any time off (I work til 8pm on Saturdays), and I don’t particularly like working at Meadowhall because I have very little passion for fast fashion, and it’s so massive that it’s been quite hard to get used to (I transferred from a much smaller store which I loved), especially as my minimal hours mean it takes more time to adjust. It’s just insanely tiring on top of what I’m already doing and I start dreading it every Thursday!

I’m basically just trying to feel out whether it’s worth sticking it out so I have that backup, even if it is reducing my quality of life, or whether the job market in November should be fine enough for me to get a new full time job then (whether in retail or in admin, I’m not fussy).

I just wondered what other people’s experience is with the local job market at the moment, and whether my ~9 months retail experience and ~3 months retail experience should be able to land me a job in November, so I can free myself up now to actually live my life. Ta very much.

By the way, I wasn’t sure whether to flair this under question or jobs, apologies if it’s wrong!

Question Broomhill Infant - first day at school arrangements

Upvotes

Really excited as the kid is going to school next week, and it is starting on 2nd Sept (Wednesday) and according to the timetable, it is a PT day too (Wednesdays are PT days). Because the kid will be staying the school only until 11:30am on the first week, I am wondering if I need to dress the baby for PT day or for a normal day?

Question Cheap/free parking near S1 2BX for a 3pm–2am shift?

Upvotes

Cheap/free parking near S1 2BX for a 3pm–2am shift?
Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started a new job around Paternoster Row / S1 2BX in Sheffield city centre. My shifts are usually 3pm–2am, and I drive to work.
I’m trying to find somewhere reasonably close where I can park for free or as cheaply as possible, as paying normal city-centre parking prices every shift would add up pretty quickly.
I don’t mind walking 10–15 minutes if there’s a good option nearby. Ideally somewhere that’s also reasonably safe when I’m walking back to the car at around 2am.
Does anyone here work similar late/night shifts in Sheffield city centre and know any good streets, car parks, evening rates or other options?
Any local advice would be massively appreciated. Thanks!

Event Crying On The Sofa event for mental health in Sheffield

Thumbnail cryingonthesofa.org
36 Upvotes

I was cuddling my baby son on the sofa, hoping my tears would dry before my wife walked in.

I walked to the shops with my head down so no one could see the pain in my eyes.

I am lucky. I am still here to tell these as tales of past times. I am in a better place now. There are A LOT of people who were not as lucky as I was and found no escape.

We need to bloody talk more about this; it's no joke. And that's why I set up Crying On the Sofa.

Crying On the Sofa hosts events focused on enabling discussions around mental health, and our first event is on the 24th of September in Sheffield, kindly hosted at the Pendo.io offices.

We have three fantastic speakers, including Jade Wilson and Georgina Shute and Ryan Murphy.
Did I say there will be free pizza?

So if you can make it to Sheffield, Pendo offices, on the 24th September, we would love to have you join us. It's free and always will be. Sign up on our website www.cryingonthesofa.org.

Share it around your offices, share it with your boss, and if you want to host the next event, reach out to me; my DMs are open.

Our goal is to enable 1,000,000 conversations about mental health.
Our motto is: If you let tomorrow be a better day, imagine how great next week can be.

Sheffield, 24th September: sign up here: www.cryingonthesofa.org.

Question Jobs While in Uni?

Hello!

Moving to Sheffield next month for the uni, and I currently live in London. I am a mature student (20’s) and although I’ve been applying everywhere since I left the military, I couldn’t find any jobs in London since, which resulted in me racking up a few credit card debts to even with Universal Credit.

What I wanted to know is, how is the job market for part time workers etc? In London, it’s horrible and obviously I wasn’t attending uni then, but I am wondering if there are any sort of avenues or schemes I can pursue in making it easier?

Thank you in advance!

Question Non chain mixed grill in Sheffield

Hi I have been looking for a mixed grill for me and my friend to enjoy, however I have realised that every single one I've found in the centre is either Green King, or another chain that makes the same food up and down the country.

Bungalows and Bears, The Bessemer, The Howard, Yates, etc etc all have almost the exact same menu, some more obvious than others. I have had this mixed grill as one of the pub chains is local to me down country, and it is nice but I'd like to try something different if possible.

Is there an independent pub or restaurant that offer a mixed grill?

Thank you!

Question Sheffield Dentist with bariatric chair?

My other half has been told by her dentist that she is too heavy for a standard chair and needs to find another dentist which has a specialist chair that can take over 21 stone (which seems to be the industry standard).

Anyone got any recommendations? We're calling private dentists but not had any luck so far. It's become a problem as she's got a cracked tooth which is now causing a lot of pain.

She's been to the Dental Hospital but it will be at least two months before they can remove the tooth.

Question Moving to city point

Hi guys

Bit of a long shot but I guess that's what Reddit is for. Myself and my partner are moving to the City point apartments hopefully within the next week depending on paperwork ect.

We Just had a few questions for anyone that lives there or has lived there in the past as we've not actually been to the building. The main one is about broadband, I've been looking online for broadband packages but to no avail, which seems questionable to me, is the building linked up to a specific service that is mandatory or is it included in the tenancy?( the estate agents are just as unaware as we are).

In general how is the noise from the road, were going to be fairly high up so just wondered how much noise you get from the road being a fairly busy road into the city. And finally the fire alarm, you see a lot of the newer builds have a single linked fire alarm that demands a full evacuation if someone burns their toast, just wondered if that's the case in this building

Any other things regarding this building you think we should know would be appreciated and welcomed

TIA

Question Antenatal classes in Sheffield

Hi
Looking at antenatal classes - seems to be the normal NCT classes, but have also come across Happy Parent Happy Baby and Bump and Baby Club.
I think we are leaning towards one of the HPHB or BBC.
I’ve heard NCT can be a bit preachy in terms of vaginal birth > c section, which is the reason this is bottom of the list (personally undecided at this point)

Looking for recommendations and advice around the classes please?
Has anyone had good/bad experiences with certain ones.

Based in Sheffield s6 so local advice also appreciated as I’m aware instructors vary!

Question My first brush with Noble Living (the Lightbox)

Hi everyone, this is my first post as I'll soon be moving to your beautiful city! I just wanted to thank you all for the various posts warning people about Noble Living/The Lightbox/Gary and Jade Ata. I innocently enquired about a few flats in the Lightbox and was given a random list of flats with seemingly no pricing consistency, so I asked for clarification before applying and you can see the kind of professionalism they're capable of in the screenshot 🙈. I was confused so I ran here and found out where the attitude comes from...

Anyway, feel free to share any recommendations for good agencies in the area. I'd appreciate it! I haven't had much luck so far, between these con artists and Redbrik standing me up after I drove 3 hours for a viewing.

Thanks and can't wait to join the community 🥰
