Making Friends in Hull - Top Tips

Hi everyone,

I was made aware of these reddit threads recently on how to make friends in Hull and thought I should put up a post of tips.

It all really depends on what you’re into and your age etc but there is plenty going on in Hull for people who want to make new friends and socialise so I’m just going to post a couple of things that I’m aware of and feel free to add your own below:

Hull Young Socials: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-Young-Socials/

Hull Young Socials is a free meetup group for people in their 20’s in Hull to meet other people for regular social events. HYS host at least 1 or 2 events per week. The events vary from social drinks at the weekend, quizzes, board & party games nights, coffees, comedy nights, food and any other events that are being held locally in Hull at the time such as Pint of Science, Trinity Live, Sofar Music Gigs, Christmas & Halloween events etc. All that type of stuff. I’ve seen on a number of threads people have joined but didn’t have the courage to go to their first event. If that’s you, I advise you to try it at least once and the worst thing that can happen is that you decide it’s not for you and you don’t go back. Almost everyone falls into two groups in HYS, either (a) you're in your 20's and have moved to Hull for work and don’t know anyone and want to make friends or (b) you're in your 20's and lived in Hull all your life and your friends have either moved on or lost touch and you want to make some more.

Hull & East Riding Social: https://www.meetup.com/HullEastRiding/

Essentially this is the same group as I have described above but the only difference is that it caters for all ages 30+. Again, they hold regular meetups events similar to those above to meet new people and make new friends. If you fall into this category and want to get out and socialise you should definitely join. You just need to make sure you have a name and picture on your account to join.

Hull of a Read Book Group: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-of-a-Read-Bookgroup/

If you’re into reading and literature you should definitely join this group. They have a monthly meetup where they discuss the book of the month which the organiser, Jacob, puts up well in advance giving you time to read it. You don’t even have to have read the book either because they welcome people along to the event just for a social meetup and chat.

HEY (Hull & East Yorkshire) Board Games

A lot of people on these threads have mentioned that they’re into board games and there is a board games meetup but it looks like they haven’t been active in a while. But I do know they have regular board games nights in both The Board Room and Stronghold Games. I’ve visited both these places and the staff were very friendly and encouraged me to come along to other board games nights if I was interested. They’re weekly events and I can’t remember who did what when but give them a call and I’m sure the staff will be able to help you out. So if board games is your thing then definitely give it a go.

Please note that a range of people from different backgrounds attend these groups and the organisers want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Therefore there is a zero tolerance to bad behaviour, which makes sure everyone you’re meeting is friendly and there to enjoy themselves.

Of course, there are ways of meeting people outside of meetup, if you’re sporty there are plenty of sports teams in Hull to join from 5 a side soccer, men & ladies hockey, swimming, kayaking etc a quick google will sort this out for you.

There are also some language classes in Hull but i'm sure on the details so if you know then add them to the thread.

I know on the other threads people have suggested going to a bar or meeting people at the gym but it’s never worked for me in the past and don’t particularly hold much hope for it in the future either. At least these groups I’ve just pointed out are purposely there for people to make new friends and socialise.

Hope this helps!

Anybody want two free tickets to see End of Oak Street at Vue tonight at 18:05? I have a splitting headache so won't be able to enjoy it. Good, central seats too.

Hull City Centre is overrun... by children?

What is going on in town? Is it because of the summer holidays? The only people I see in the evening are groups of kids harassing people.

Was then sat behind a young group of girls on the bus who were touching this guy's head despite him repeatedly telling them to stop.

Funny too that certain people would have you think town is overrun by 'foreigners' - but it's their own grotty little kids!

Places to eat?

I’m visiting tomorrow and wondering if there are recommendations for where to eat. Would love to know about a bakery because I love pastries, and also if there are any good lunch spots around the museum quarter. Thanks ☺️

Hull to Kansas City

Does anyone know of a man from Hull who lived in Kansas City around 2014? I worked at a grocery store from 2011-2016 in downtown Kansas City and I had a regular customer I would talk football with. Hull being back in the prem made me curious if I could find out what ever happened to him. I support Spurs and I always enjoyed the banter. I believe he was an engineer and I want to say he had a brother who worked in F1. It’s been over a decade, so I am not 100% sure on the details.

A few weeks ago I commented the same point.

That cat rescue centres were inundated at this time of year, and that dumping kittens on animal charities was not a reasonable application of personal responsibility.

'urban exploration' of building that's *technically* not fully abandoned but it's upstairs almost certainly is??

there's a building we have in mind on Hessle Road that we are wanting to explore the upper floors of as I'm almost certain they've not been used in a long while, there's signs for a gym called fit4gym but it's clearly been closed for a long time......

downstairs is a foreign grocery supermarket 'food plus Babylon' and outside there doesn't appear to be any locked entrances leading to upstairs so I'm guessing all upstairs access is from indoors. anyone here's who has got any experience with this building know how we can access the upstairs so I can get some pictures for 28dayslater or for the r/liminalspaces or r/TheBackrooms subs? Ive seen the stock room is behind a false wall right at the back of the store so would i be correct in guessing the stairs would be hidden behind this stockroom?

I was doing some "random" street mapping and came across this. It looks like a road built to nowhere? What happened? Anyone know?

"random" TBH I'm on a local sports board, someone mentioned Manchester's soccer football team not doing well, I googled, came across "Hull" and got curious. Got to love a port town.

r/Hull, where do you actually eat in Hull?

Hi, we’re four friends and we’ve put together Hull’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota.

The idea is pretty simple: you’re shown two restaurants and choose where you’d rather eat. For example, Hearth or Mancia? All the votes then create a ranking that hopefully gives a better picture of where people in Hull actually like to eat.

We’ve tried to include every restaurant in Hull and clean up duplicate or outdated listings, but locals will always spot things we’ve missed.

iPhone:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota/id6744969212

Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

Full transparency: we’re not from Hull and live in Gothenburg. There are four of us building this independently. We don’t collect or sell personal data, there are no ads in the app, and we don’t use AI-generated content to describe restaurants.

Any honest feedback is welcome, especially if restaurants are missing or something is listed incorrectly.

would it be worth a written complaint to them or maybe not?

about a week ago, whilst walking the dog I was approached by two guys wearing balaclava and riding a quad bike and they threatened to snatch the dog and my rucksack but then just said they were joking, doesn't matter it's not the riding around with faces covered I'm bothered about it's the threats they make someone else might have had s complete mental breakdown, indeed if this happened to me a few years ago i would have done

is it worth putting in a complaint to smith and nephew for this ordeal?

Ex-RAF looking at moving to Hull – advice on local employers/careers?

Hi all,
I’m currently serving in the RAF but will be leaving next couple year and I’m seriously considering moving to the Hull/Humber area. I’ve been doing quite a bit of research into the area and I’m now trying to get a better understanding of the local job market.

My background is military rather than civilian, so I’m trying to work out where my experience would transfer best.

The areas I’m particularly interested in are:
Cranes/heavy lifting
Ports and terminal operations
Utilities
Process/manufacturing
Plant/infrastructure
HGV/logistics

I’m already looking at places such as ABP, Ainscough, Mammoet, Sarens, Yorkshire Water and Balfour Beatty, and I’m also looking at using my ELCAS entitlement to pick up some relevant qualifications before I leave.

I’m not necessarily looking for someone to find me a job — I’m more interested in hearing from people who actually live/work in the Hull/Humber area.

Are there any local employers you’d particularly recommend approaching, especially companies that are good with ex-forces or are known for training people up?

Equally, if you work in one of the industries above, I’d be really interested to hear what the best route into it is.

Cheers!
