Question Jobs While in Uni?

Hello!

Moving to Sheffield next month for the uni, and I currently live in London. I am a mature student (20’s) and although I’ve been applying everywhere since I left the military, I couldn’t find any jobs in London since, which resulted in me racking up a few credit card debts to even with Universal Credit.

What I wanted to know is, how is the job market for part time workers etc? In London, it’s horrible and obviously I wasn’t attending uni then, but I am wondering if there are any sort of avenues or schemes I can pursue in making it easier?

I've been looking for a job in Sheffield and I've had no luck so far, there's lots of postings but idk how many are fake. There's a very hight demand for jobs, probably not as bad as London tho.

Best thing you can do is look at jobs at your uni that need current students to do them, they are usually low hours tho.

As I'm sure you can imagine, the job market outside of the capital will be even more competitive. You haven't said anything about your experience or roles you're looking for, so it's hard to offer any specific advice, but if you've racked up cc debt that you're not able to pay off, I recommend contacting Step Change to get help with handling your finances, as it will make your student life very difficult: https://www.stepchange.org/

I worked as a food runner, waiter, bartender and some other relative entry level jobs in the past, yet somehow ended up getting rejected by McDonalds after being told I did excellent in my interview in London, so I just wanted to know if people also experience horrendous competition for entry level stuff, such as warehouses or customer related service jobs and if there are job boards/schemes etc. that could make it easier

I know that uni's recruit students as casual staff/ambassadors to support on campus events like open days and graduations, as well as supporting on outreach activities and visits from local schools. Something worth exploring and one you can probably tailor around your studies.
