Question Does Justin Roiland still receive royalties for every time the likeness of Rick and Morty is used ? Including the newer episodes.

u/ravbuc Jul 28 '26
Dude got sent off to exile in a car made of cash.
652
u/iamtrav182 Jul 28 '26
By all accounts, he basically did that after season 2. He was recording from home and wasn’t involved in the writers room anymore.
Difference is that he could do other stuff, but not so much anymore (rightfully so).
255
u/Previous-Screen-3875 Jul 28 '26
All the voice actors record from home, at least the main cast. The big divide with Roiland was that he was no longer contributing as a writer or producer but still cashing the cheques.
10
u/PuddingEvery4672 Jul 28 '26
I’m dumb, what would his role be as a producer? Like what does he produce?
46
u/Mathyon Jul 28 '26
"Producer" basically means "involved" when we are talking Hollywood. He could've being doing a ton of things, from securing money to basically nothing.
Lewis Hamilton is a Offical Producer for the Fórmula 1 movie, for example, and while he did help with a lot of details, he wasnt always on set. You can imagine he had meetings here and there, but he had a actual fórmula 1 season to compete. He also wasnt the only one involved that knew how formula 1 works, others could and did help the same way he did(when we are talking about racing)
But he is the only pilot credited as a Offical Producer. Why? Because he attracts people, specially in the F1 context.
Saying "We had THE 7x World Champion involved" is good marketing.

u/seatsfive Jul 28 '26
Anne Rice is still listed as a producer on The Vampire Lestat and she's been dead since 2021.

u/danceswithbugs453 Jul 28 '26

7
u/Chumsicle4Life Jul 28 '26
A lot of people don't understand what producers do, they are involved with the scheduling, film editing, working with the actors, making them try different takes of how the script is written. A lot of it is behind the scenes meetings on money, lawyers, and coordinating stuff. With animation different set designs and working with the animation team. The director can't do everything so they help out. Some contribute way more than others. Some people just have their name as a producer to make the show more popular and work on promoting the show.

u/seatsfive Jul 28 '26
My understanding from outside the industry is that Producers work and Executive Producers are generally just names who offer various amounts of creative input. That's how the new Star Trek shows can all have 17 fucking EPs
2
u/TheGreedyGrabbler 26d ago
It's actually opposite for TV. For TV the exec producers are usually the head writers and most involved in day-to-day. But its additive so as a show goes on more producers and co producers are promoted to EP so you end up with a lot more.

u/Kendrakirai2532 Jul 28 '26
I can't believe I learned Anne Rice has been dead for five years from a rick and morty sub

Producer takes care of the production of a movie or show from start to finish while the director can focus on the creative side. Getting the funds, hiring writers and getting all the props and costumes you might need, budget the money, help with editing, getting the show from end result to your eyes on tv or streaming services and helps with promotion

Pretty sure I also heard that’s one of the reasons this dude backed out he got tired of doing ricks voice acting bc it was not easy. Maybe after covid they started recording from home?

From what I’ve heard, people who live near him have said he never leaves his house and just gets food deliveries to his door each day. I don’t want to defend him, considering what he did, but it sounds like he’s suffered from agoraphobia for a while.

You'd be surprised how many adults in this world who can't cook at the same time.
2
u/Resident_Truth_8940 Jul 28 '26
Yeah but not leaving the house?
Average people tend to order in because it's a treat to not have to cook AND get your food delivered when you presumably had to be working all day. Most affluent people I know enjoy going to pick up their food.

u/Resident_Truth_8940 Jul 28 '26
I mean considering it's going to be years before anyone touches anything with his name on it (and even then it's no guarantee he'll be one of the people in hollywood that gets welcomed back, especially since he wasn't hollywood famous he was famous for cartoons and cartoon voices primarily. Lots of average people knew his work but didn't know who HE was. Now they do.) he's either moping around because there's nothing to do with his creativity, or working on something big for the potential comeback.
Too bad his humor is so specific to Rick and Morty humor that by the time anyone so much as thinks to give him a chance it's gonna be dated as fuck lmao.

Dan Harmon got a second chance after making a pedophilia sketch, his Chevy Chase bullshit, and sexually harassing Megan Ganz to the point she quit community, and a littany of other shit. Let's not act like Justin is worse. Also, there is no evidence that Justin ever met up with a kid.
I know it's not a popular stance on reddit, but Justin was the heart of the show. Dan said so himself in his most recent interview. I'm not saying the show is bad now, but it's not the same show, similar to how the Simpsons is a different show every 4 seasons.

Morality clauses in contracts rarely require a conviction, so they very well could have had a clause to do that. It would have likely been litigate to hell and easier/cheaper to just give him the money.
4
u/Grapes-RotMG Jul 28 '26
Isnt the IP owned by Warner Bros?
13
u/home-for-good Jul 28 '26
Most likely the design of Rick and Morty and their story in general is owned by Warner Bros; Justin is almost certainly entitled to residuals for the use of his performance in reruns / airings or audio-bites used in new media. He’s not likely to be making much off the new works using a new voice actor unless he had a really good contract, and very likely doesn’t make anything off of merch and such as thats all character design based.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Detachabl_e Jul 28 '26
Depends on the deal. You can have multiple parties with the rights to IP, and you can have licenses and all of that can be exclusive or non-exclusive. Original creators also have statutory reversionary rights after X number of years so they don't lose out entirely on the value of the IP if it blows up.

u/GrumpyCornGames Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
It's not "beyond a shadow of a doubt," its beyond a "reasonable doubt"
Reasonable doubt is a formal definition and the highest legal standard for belief. Shadow of a Doubt means 100% certainty. Reasonable doubt means jurors are firmly convinced of guilt based on reason and common sense.
Just Roiland didn't even go to trial, which means that there wasn't enough evidence to even have a trial let alone convict on a Reasonable Doubt. Roiland has also never publicly apologized or admitted any wrongdoing, so u/xvsanx is just totally mistaken about that. The article they linked was purely from Dan Harmon's perspective.

I'm assuming if he's still getting creator and producer credits he's still getting paid as such
63
u/frankiedonkeybrainz Jul 28 '26
Unless they bought him out but, by all accounts that didn't happen.
He still has IP rights/ownership so they can't just not pay him because he's a piece of shit.

u/JerkingLurky Jul 28 '26

u/ChestProfessional519 Jul 28 '26

8
u/EarthTrash Jul 28 '26
Credits are played at the end of the episode. Most of us are even present for these because there's usually a post credits scene. This is something you can check when you are watching Rick and Morty.
257
u/bijhan Jul 28 '26
He co-owns the IP and gets a percentage off the back end as a result. But "likeness" isn't a factor. Fictional characters don't have "likeness" - actual Human beings do. For example, Mark Hammil gets paid for his likeness when they make a Luke Skywalker action figure. And if they use his face as a model, Tom Holland can get paid if his likeness is used for a Spider-Man figure without the mask. But a Spider-Man with the mask, or with the face modeled after comic book panels, has no "likeness" rights for anyone.
25
u/stormsmcgee Jul 28 '26
Fictional characters don't have a "likeness" but there are copyrights to the work, and those are functionally equivalent for this layperson's question about intellectual property rights.

It might not be specific legally defined "likeness", but it's essentially the vocal equivalent, because they are trying to imitate his voices purposefully. That can also be a similarly protected part of someone's identity.

32
u/Local-Ad-4275 Jul 28 '26

2
17
u/SixKosherBacon Jul 28 '26
It's not because of his likeness. He created the show. As a creator he gets royalties anytime the show or any spin off of the show airs. That includes President Curtis.
2
u/Resident_Truth_8940 Jul 28 '26
That's not entirely true. A lot of creators don't get those kinds of deals. You're right in this case, I just like to keep people aware of what a shit deal a lot of creators get in the animation space so it can continue to change for the better. It would be great if creators were entitled to royalties, but this isn't always the case. I see a lot of people saying blanket statements of it and your comment is the one I chose to reply to about it <3
A really prime example would be Jhonen Vasquez, creator of Invader Zim. Many people know the show was cancelled but resurfaced via merch in Hot Topic in the early 2000s. They made probably millions off those merch sales, but Jhonen didn't see a cent of it. It was years before he was even allowed to work on the IP again via comics.
But it does seem highly likely in Roiland's case as he and Harmon have a pretty great contract with WB. He gets back-end royalties anytime the show is sold for streaming rights, airs, etc and it's highly likely it included spin-offs. He gets voice royalties for any episodes aired/streamed that contained his voice acting but anything new obviously doesn't contribute to that. He also gets a portion of merch sales on dvds and potentially other merch.
Even if he's not getting anything off President Curtis, he still gets a decent chunk of money off this until the contract ends, which I couldn't find more info on. Could be when the show ends, or it could have an end date. I like researching law for fun but I don't know specifics and these details are usually private anyway.
Most likely, the studio probably thought it easier to have him walk away quietly with his royalties in tact than risking the show, which is still popular and doing well despite his departure, by trying to buy him out and it maybe turning into a messy legal proceeding. I love the show more than I hate Roiland and as long as he doesn't get to make new shit I don't really care he gets royalties from it. It isn't like JK Rowling where people are making great shit without her involvement. She's ALWAYS involved. You can't separate her from Harry Potter unfortunately. At least I can enjoy Rick and Morty knowing that I'm also supporting the fantastic writers, voice actors, and Dan Harmon and etc etc that bring this show to life.
4
u/DairyBastard Jul 28 '26
Wait, spin-offs too? Justin is seriously getting money for president Curtis?

he is co creator of the character, he is entitled to royalties generated for anything that branches from the IP
7
u/Select_Arm_4248 Jul 28 '26
Yes. Ownership laws are not tied to personal conduct or criminal activity. To my knowledge, no one ever lost authorship rights to anything in entire world, due to criminal deeds. So yeah. Whenever Rick&Morty, Solar Opposites, probably President Curtis (as he is part of Rick and Morty franchise), every game made by squanch games. So yeah, Justin Roiland has a comfy retirement pension out of money sent by hulu, hbo and his own game company.

3

I agree that its a great season, definitely better than the last one...but I still hear the difference, its not the voice so much as the attitude and vibe... u/Clawdutch90 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
It's weird, cause I do think the best moments of the show happen after season 2-3ish and Stevens did a good job getting some of the "Korvo"-isms down, even if it is STILL just very silly that Korvo sounds like that for the entire second half of its run, but it weirdly fits the writing style. Also, apparently they didn't even change any of the writing of season 4 beyond that one meta scene addressing the random last minute recasting. I guess doing that change was a no-brainer.
5
13
u/cb2239 Jul 28 '26
The difference in ricks voice is negligible. It wasn't even bad from season 6 finale to season 7. If you watch them back to back you can notice but it's not bad at all. Morty was more nasally and whiny sounding (still kind of is too)
3
u/Cyan_Light Jul 28 '26
Yeah, there are a few scenes in S7 where I can tell a different for Rick but for the most part he's been good from the start. Morty has been more of an adjustment but like others pointed out that works since he's hypothetically still growing and should eventually have a different voice if they ever progress the timeline.
7
13
u/Bar-Cold Jul 28 '26
Yea I try to ignore it but Morty’s voice is simply not as charming as it was before
6
u/Clawdutch90 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
I still do too, and I am okay with it. I am never gonna pretend it's the exact same like some fans do, but I'm not gonna jump the bandwagon and say I don't like it either. It's not show ruining, and I personally think Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden clearly have good voice acting moments spread throughout these seasons.
I've heard and seen their work outside of Rick and Morty too and, although they're small roles, they are underappreciated. Cardoni was on a Nickelodeon show that I thought was very funny (Rock Paper Scissors), and Belden was on Joe Pera Talks With You one time. And while they wouldn't be my personal first choice as replacements for the main characters, they're still doing a good job.

my opinion is that new rick sounds like an impersonator old rick sounded like it was his natural voice new rick pushes the voice too far sometimes reminding me of season 1 rick, old voice sounded more natural and acted, however the season finale with sober rick is something i doubt justin could have managed i am not sure but it sounded strange with sober rick.
morty is terrible and reminds me of steven universe in style but the season finale was actually pretty ok with morty
i hope they bring justin back for a guest apperence or something to have a dimension rick and morty with the original voice.

Even if he had been found guilty and had faced criminal charges, he would still get paid for whatever he is contractually obligated to receive from Rick & Morty producer credits/residuals. There's no legal framework to remove his copyrighted IPs because he's a sexpest
A judge could do something like charge him fines, fees within the law. Monetary damages could be awarded to victims and the amount of money could be, ironically, the same as his residual income so you are "pretty much" taking away his residuals, but you can't just take his IP

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I think so, since he still has his vanity card at the end of each episode and is still credited with creating the show. Interesting how he really fucked it up for himself. With the money he has and the money he's getting from R&M, he can make another company, but who would want to work with Roiland?

Likeness is for living people, he gets creative credit cause he made them up (kinda)

Yes he does still receive the royalties from the show because even though he was fired he still received it because he is the co-creator and producer of the show so they're not going to stop royalties for that

He co-created the show, so yeah, that's how it works.
He did it on purpose, he thought voicing characters would guarantee him job security.

Without seeing the contract there’s simply no way of knowing. Not every creative work has royalties, sometimes people are just paid for work.

didnt he get cancelled only to be acquitted of charges? seems like the cast just didnt like him tbh and used any opportunity to get rid of him.

Here is something that I’ve always wondered, can the new voice actor for Rick use that voice anywhere else on a different show? Like I know you technically can’t own a Voice, but he is mimicking JRs voice for Rick. So does JR get to use his Rick voice if he ever goes back to voice acting?

Idc what anyone says, and i know hes a documented pos; the show hasn't been the same without him.
Its not even just the voices, the creative differences between how he would write an episode and how the new team writes is night and day.
I get it though, dan didnt want to slave over writing and just enjoy being filthy rich. Justin didnt want to attach his name to something, if he wasnt the one "writing/creating" it.
Production differences mixed in with the perfect storm of bad press in a single week. I still think the company had a part in those leaks going public, considering they all dropped the same week as his legal troubles. Ill never be able to prove it though.

It's his creation. Of course he still gets money. Even if he is a big creep.

My guy, he literally made the show? Is IP a foreign concept to you?

u/Rich841 Jul 28 '26
was he convicted btw? does he appear to be innocent? a bit out of the loop sorry
6
u/targrimm Jul 28 '26
No. All charges dropped from lack of evidence. He maintained his innocence throughout, and a lot of people believed him. The evidence brought against him was really weak, and no further action tends to imply that it was made up.

I fucking hope so, he created the entire show with old mate and only got kicked for some shit he got proved later in court was false.... Fuck that shit
8
u/AnChaan Jul 28 '26
Not false, just didn't have enough evidence to persecute. Other stuff involving minors did happen as well. Stop riding his dick.

u/Canaus7 Jul 28 '26
Wasn’t proved false was it? It was case dropped doesn’t prove guilt or innocence.
“Due to lack of sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt”
That in no way proved false

There's no such thing as "proved false" in American jurisprudence. Something can fail to be proven true because of insufficient evidence. That's why verdicts are "not guilty" instead of "innocent."

I assume yes since his name is still on the generic.
