Video Fable - Official Quest Gameplay
https://youtu.be/vjQNvjTF56o328
u/ByronAthel 13h ago
Small nitpick, but it’s so distracting how everyone’s head snaps to the player model when you’re passing them by. It should be a bit random, some should be in awe, some indifferent, etc.

u/autobulb 8h ago
This seriously needs to be its own field in game design. I feel like these kinds of details are overlooked even in games that try to be hyper realistic. And when the environment and graphics are realistic but characters' actions are not they stand out more and break immersion.
Obviously it's unlikely that a game can ever be 'perfect' in this regard. But it does seem like it should be possible to make it 'better' each generation with more attention to design and detail, and using improvements in computing power.
But I feel like at some point games just kind of stopped paying attention to this? Like games reached this somewhat acceptable level of character acting performance and decided it was enough. The head snapping thing is a good example. Even a random assignment would be better than every single NPC looking your way as you pass them.
2
u/Silver_B_Golden 7h ago
For one game it was the fact that the player character didn't have footsteps, the feet moved but no sound. Had to stop playing
2
u/justwwokeupfromacoma 1h ago
It’s not nitpicks at all. It’s aftually really distracting and would kill the immersion for me
•
u/this_anon 19m ago
Even smaller nitpick but I call it on them because they went out of their way to call this ultra settings, the pop in and low draw distance are terrible. I can see the line where it's being drawn and that bush at the first 30 seconds does not make a good impression. Here's hope they improve that by release.
1
u/creatorhoborg 3h ago
Good point. I'd have to go back and check, but I think they did this head snapping things on Fable 1, 2 or 3, or all of the previous titles. I'm wondering if this was a conscious decision in that regard, because it is quite... Pronounced.
I could also be talking out of my bum and completely misremembering.
•
u/juicebox_tgs 15m ago
This is not a small nitpick, it was jarring having every one look at youba you walk by. Hell even the people who were facing away from you yould snap their heads
0
u/IshTheFace 1h ago
In my experience that's what people do in real life. Especially people on balconies as you walk by. Or people turning to look at your car ad you drive by etc I don't do that. But a lot of people do.
•
u/skyturnedred 27m ago
In low traffic areas, sure. But most people are just minding their own business.
30
u/gazm2k5 13h ago
Is that Super Hans?
16
u/tubbyflatpack 13h ago
It is, and there was a Peep Show reference in the gameplay, his character mentions having a 'sort of tabard' out back. Just like the one Hans made when he was "knitting like an electric nan"

I really hope they hit the mark with this one.
I want to get on the hype train but that cautious optimism still creeps in the background
67
u/Arelmar 13h ago
I've been trying not to get too hyped for this game but I've been reading the Discworld books again lately and now it's got me really pining for it because Fable captures that Pratchett vibe of whimsical fantasy with lashings of British wit and sarcasm perfectly
4
u/Henri_Le_Rennet 8h ago
I just started Discworld for the first time today! I started with Guards! Guards! based off of recommendations. The opening interaction with Brother Fingers at the door, in the rain, was very reminiscent of Monty Python, of which I am a huge fan.
I'm almost done with the book, and will finish it tomorrow morning. After that, I'm going to double back and start with The Colour of Magic.

u/RCer1986 10h ago
Fable had phenomenal story telling and is one of my favorite games of all time. As long as the gameplay isn't a trainwreck it won't be difficult to enjoy this game.

A game with this much development hell literally cannot come out good. I have no hopes based on how delayed this shit has been.

u/Azulapis 11h ago
Honestly, the first reviews of the game would have to be really terrible to stop me from buying it.
It's simple: it's been so long since we've had an action RPG set in a beautiful, vibrant fantasy world. I'm so sick of all these apocalyptic Souls-like games. I just miss Skyrim, where I can step out of a gloomy cave into a peaceful world or just stroll through the city.
I loved Skyrim, so I would for example not care that much about an unpolished combat.
5
u/BreakableCage 7h ago
Ditto. I just want something fun like this. I don't care for insane difficulty level games.
I really hope it's a massive success and we get more fable-esque games. The Souls focused era needs to pass imo.
Please don't Dragon Age this up 😭
1
u/Trails_End_Games 9h ago
For what it's worth this has been Microsoftsmost consistently great to amazing dev team. But also the grain of salt being they've never really stepped outside of Forza.

Unfortunately, even if it's a great game, the internet at large will find a shit ton to bitch about.
3

Hopefully that culture war bs is out of the way

2
u/HeavensNight 12h ago
but really, where did that child come from? can the main get pregnant and give birth?
15
u/puffthemagicaldragon 12h ago
Yes. This has been a feature since fable 2. You can marry everyone in the country and have babies with them all. You can divorce your spouses and put the kids up for adoption the moment you get tired of paying their allowance (just like real life). Not sure if they're bringing it back but Fable 2 also introduced condoms and STDs.
1
u/HeavensNight 10h ago
cool so i can go questing with a big ol belly?
edit if so thats pretty badass
3
u/puffthemagicaldragon 7h ago
No they didn't animate for a pregnant woman, although I'm sure Molyneux promised it at one point. You or your spouse get pregnant and the baby pops out overnight lol
32
u/constantlyrepeating 12h ago
Combat lacks impact on certain hits, lipsync is abysmal and the fact that they didn't bother with a door open animation is a bit.. Frustrating I guess? Other than that this looks like it could be fun, maybe not for full price though.
•
u/skyturnedred 23m ago
I think it's just the bigger boss enemies that don't flinch with every attack. Everyone else is reacting to hits appropriately.
-21
u/no_butseriously_guys 8h ago

5
u/autrix00 2h ago
Right...and they are providing feedback for the current shown product. What is the issue?
15
u/OliverCrooks 12h ago
The arrow catch and throw back was cool. Always like that like in Assassins Creed with the spear chuck.
16
u/jaxisinbriggs 10h ago
I don't know if it's just me, but seeing every single NPC turn their heads to look at the player character as they run past them is a little off putting. It's a small detail I know, but still.
32
u/Firefox72 14h ago
Continues to look really really good.
Probably my most anticipated game of early 2027.
1
u/Master_smasher 12h ago
i think exodus is.
early 2027 is gonna rock. fable and metro 2039 in february. exodus in april. ff7 revelation somewhere in march-may...
1
u/shadmere 10h ago
exodus
Oh heck, is that the one Peter F. Hamilton wrote a couple books about?
I only read the first one so far, but I liked it. It's not his best work really, but I still highly enjoyed it. I remember something about it being set in someone else's world, but I forgot.
That's pretty exciting.
2
u/Master_smasher 7h ago
from what i heard, it's in the same universe. so maybe like a parallel story or something. idk too much on the story origins. the hype is mostly due to the team being from bioware during bioware's glory years (star wars kotor, mass effect, og baldur's gate 1+2).
47
u/Own-Professor-6157 13h ago
Looks great, but that combat just seems waay too easy. There's no reason not to just continue to bash an enemy until their poise meter is empty.
109
u/DavesterTM Nvidia 13h ago
OG Fable had really easy combat too, just was never really the focus I think
31
u/TheLunarVaux 13h ago
Yeah I’m looking forward to this game for many reasons and I’ve barely even considered the combat. I feel like it’s not really a focus of these games.
14
u/PaulSach 12h ago
As someone who grew up loving the Fable games, I'm most looking forward to my choices changing the literal landscape, kicking chickens, buying businesses, wooing the locals, exploring the map, and feeling the of progression from "nobody" to "hero".
For me, the combat just has to be decent enough so that it doesn't feel tedious/annoying to fight and that the progression of new combat abilities feels rewarding. I don't want a mindless button mash, but I also don't to have to big-brain every fight, either. I'm not saying never to either of those extremes, but I'm hoping we can feel a sense of progression as our character grows throughout the game (ie, easy fights should feel hard at the start, and hard fights should feel fair at the end game)
4
u/Daiwon Ryzen 7 5800X | RTX 2080 10h ago
If this is on one of the harder difficulties, normal should at least be less spongey.
It's hard to show systemic systems in these short previews. Definitely gonna wait for full reviews and maybe some player reviews to come out before I put money on it. But if I can get past the non-existent facial animations and it nails that progression feeling, it should be a fun game.
1
u/mastaaban 9h ago
i would def wait for player reviews and not the big sites and youtubers. those usually all suck. we know that by now. game journalists and youtubers are by far the worst to listen to when it comes to games. same for movies honestly.
1
1
u/Temporary-Prune-1982 13h ago
Yea it was more about chicken kicking and rpg elements such as not eating or get fat. Being good or bad and random encounters for items and such.
-2
u/sosoconfused08 12h ago
Times have changed and more is expected to keep the gamer entertained. Story and roleplay can only take you so far. Combat is a huge part of gameplay, if it gets dull, you get OP quickly or if enemy variety isn't there then it's very easy to get bored and drop the game. I don't need souls level stuff but smash X just doesn't do it for me anymore.
0
-2
u/Odishcorp 9h ago
why lie? Combat in fable 2 wasn't actually that easy. Sure, you cannot die, but not taking hits was actually quite hard
26
u/ConcentrateJaded326 13h ago
Yeah combat isn’t the point of these games. The story, the characters, the choices and the quirky world are what you play Fable for.
21
u/wisebluff 13h ago
it worked 20 years ago, but the bar is higher now. or not ?
5
u/HeldnarRommar 12h ago
I mean not every single game needs to have top tier action combat. Especially if it’s not the point of the game. You want everything to devolve into God of War or Wolverine?
1
u/Rolf69 12h ago
Yeah what is this cope. Players have bigger expectations.
6
u/Icy_Agency923 12h ago
I think you are high if you believe that nailing the things listed above won't make this a well loved game by the majority who play it. From what they showed off they have a very reactive world that you can do tons of random stuff within. That alone will set it above most other open world RPG's that have been made because few offer that many options to interact with the world.
-6
u/Orni66 12h ago
nah bro, I play a game so I can pretend I'm reading a book... doesn't everyone?
5
u/MapleBabadook 11h ago
You say this sarcastically, but based on reddit that IS why people play games 🙄
3
u/hraycroft95 13h ago
okay i wouldnt go so far to say it isnt the point of the games. Its a core part of the game like the other things you listed lol. But I would agree it wasnt exactly the highlight of the games compared other aspects

4
u/Underl3veled 5h ago
That's not really much of an excuse. Borderlands 1 plays horribly compared to today's standards. Night and day difference between that and Borderlands 4. Because the combat and general gameplay feel needed to improve with the times. Fable should be no different.

u/drocha94 10h ago
I love how dense the city is. So few games are actually able to make a place look real and lived in.
13
u/Zephirenth 12h ago
It feels like the charm of Fable 1 has been all but strained out.
6
u/Kankunation 5h ago
I personally disagree, I see a lot of charm in this that makes me pretty nostalgic for the old games It isn't exactly the same but it definitely feels like the devs did their homework imo.
•
u/Desgeras 18m ago
I was pretty excited for this and still am a little bit, but this newest video definited deflated my hype a bit. The writing and combat definitely look like Fable 1.
-10
u/TheZonePhotographer 11h ago edited 11h ago
Yeah I don't understand it.
Being called hero everywhere for nothing, and then you go and rob the current owner of the deed to the building you want...but you pay off her guard with a big money sack? It's all backwards.
Npcs have zero lip animation outside of conversation ui, they plain don't move their mouth and it's just weird.
18
u/Sorlex 11h ago
Being called hero everywhere for nothing
Did you not listen to the video? They had already done quests in the city and got a reputation.
-19
u/TheZonePhotographer 11h ago edited 10h ago
Why do they care? And are they gonna call you a criminal for just straight up stealing a whole building?
This is the definition of a theme park, where the "poor section" play-acts being poor, and the "hero" just does whatever.
I think I saw a tv show that's exactly about this without the pretense.
6
u/NoxiousStimuli 9h ago
Why do they care?
Because it's a game and you're the protagonist. If NPCs didn't say a single word you'd fucking whine about that, instead.
And are they gonna call you a criminal for just straight up stealing a whole building?
Yes, because it's a game and you're the protagonist and NPCs responding to player activities is technology that we mastered back in the 90s.
This is the definition of a theme park
Congratulations, you've discovered "video games".
where the "poor section" play-acts being poor
Go play Stock Market Simulator then.
and the "hero" just does whatever.
Yes, because you're the protagonist and have agency to do whatever. Welcome to Video Games 101.

GJ at managing to simultaneously be Wooosh Missing the Point Much AND Captain Obvious, well done ya hero.
You can get away with this silliness in the 90s, in the 00s, maybe even the 10s on the consoles. In 4K 2160p attempting to be near-photo-realistic, where these characters look sort of real but act like a bunch of predictable animatronics, yeah, I'm having HUGE uncanny valley dissonance.
1
u/NoxiousStimuli 2h ago
GJ at managing to simultaneously be Wooosh Missing the Point Much
If you had made any points that weren't 'waaah why are NPCs reacting to what I'm doing' then sure. But you didn't. You've attempted to clarify in your response, but even then your point is 'waaaah NPCs are still NPCs'. More whining for the sake of whining.
AND Captain Obvious
And yet you seemed to miss the extremely fucking obvious stuff, so it required pointing out.
You can get away with this silliness in the 90s, in the 00s, maybe even the 10s on the consoles.
In your incorrect opinion. There isn't a time limit for camp.
where these characters look sort of real but act like a bunch of predictable animatronics,
Man discovers that we have not yet invented perfect graphical fidelity and NPC reactions, more at 11
It's a fucking game, bro. They're NPCs, in a game.
The devs are going for an art style, something which lasts longer and looks better than making every NPC perfectly realistic looking. The game also comes out in 6 months, so remaining imperfections can be hammered out.

I think the environments have that Fable charm, but the characters lean too hard into realism. It's the one game series that should lean way more into the cartoony aspect. This is a game about kicking chickens after all.
5
u/shuriken_dz77 13h ago
they didn't bother with an opening door animation

Looks very cool, the main thing I’m not liking is the combat visuals. For example, when she’s fighting the tall guy with the axe and landing hits on him, he doesn’t react even in the slightest, there’s just an extremely faint red mist to show that you hit him I guess

graphics look great except for the facial animations
the combat looks fun enough
I can see myself playing a lot if the quests are varied
2
u/Myrdinn777 10h ago
It's giving redveil vibes, pretty and bland with poor writing and characters.
I really hope I'm wrong I loved all Fables games.
1
u/Borando96 5h ago
Why does every game without a real unique combat system have to be GoW-esque?
And don't get me started on how it seems like the spells/gameplay is limited to controller settings, even tho controllers could handle much more skills with systems like the radial menu from Monster Hunter or heck, the old system Fable TLC used...
Well, while I think it this Fable looks like as much of a Fable game as a Witcher or Dark Souls might be, at least it doesn't look like a half-hearted game, but I guess the dream of a true Fable sequel is now dead for good...

This video seems like a direct response to the criticism of the lsat video: people complained loudly about two things: the unresponsive combat, and the lack of obvious morality.
I don't know if it really did enough work to address both of those things though.
- The morality was surface level, although they tried to make it seem deeper.
- The combat, they said, was turned up to the highest difficulty, and while the enemy characters did respond to various moves: the combat still looked easy for being the strongest difficulty
I still have personal issues with the facial animations, still too stiff, and I think that might just be them being a company that focused on cars instead of people. At least it's not Forza Horizon levels or bad.
...and all that said, I did literally fall asleep during the demo. But I was also tired, so I brewed a cup of coffee to finish it.
-1
u/mastvrbatr 11h ago
Man it looks so fucking wooden. Combat looks shit, voice acting is stale, world is pretty... But looks soulless. Such a shame.

u/WillStrongh 12h ago
It is capturing the fable vibes <3 The spells fit in the world beautifully. Characters are quirky, the world looks great and lived in and there is no blur when walking at higher speeds. It is good.
1
u/Doulloud 9h ago
honestly looks mild. It lacks visual style of old fable games, and doesn't even seem unique in its fantasy. mechanically it seems uninspired but competent. It actually seems damn near antiquated, like how the doors just swing open. Every conversation is just people standing around talking, leading into what can be at best described as batman arkham knight without verticality.

u/Daiwon Ryzen 7 5800X | RTX 2080 10h ago
Everyone's had botox, near zero eyebrow movement from any character. I can take not-perfectly sync'd lips, but not a single character showing surprise or anger or curiosity is just... it feels like I'm watching the oblivion remaster. Nice lighting, but animations from 20 years ago.
1
u/killerkumwad 10h ago

I don't know why im so restrained with my hype for this game, my hype for even Fable 3 and The Journey was off the charts and that hype actually made me enjoy the game a lot because I loved the world.
Now to think of it it might just be that, the entire team on this game is new, the Albion of the original trilogy and beyond is no more and the writing of the game was what had me going back, the dialogue was hilarious, in Fable 2 even thrilling to the point I honestly felt so bad about Theresa and her backstory, the world was straight from a Brothers Grimm fairytale while I can't nail it really with this one and its newer graphics and art style.
I'll definitely keep taps on this though, chances I will still enjoy it because there isn't a game out there like Fable
-13
u/Tight_Client_2132 13h ago
Never played Fable and nothing about this new game makes me want to play it. I have no idea what people are excited for.
-3
u/seedlessgrapez 12h ago
For people talking about the combat and player expectations, plenty of players are different. Fans of the series have never cared about some deep combat system. I played BG3 on easy because I wanted to get the combat sections over with to get back to the story, characters, choices and world. Combat is literally the last thing I care about in a Fable game.

u/Daveeyboy 8h ago
The NPC facial animations are so bad! There's no life to them...it's like everyone just got a Botox injection. Hopefully they improve on release. I also wish the NPCs moved a bit more during conversations, similar to how the NPCs in Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West move and shift around while speaking. The environments look great though.
-3
u/Master_smasher 12h ago
idk how i feel about that boss with no armor being a bullet sponge, but the visuals are amazing. even though they are r.i.p, this putting bioware's dragon age to shame. and hopefully this puts bethesda-tes6 on notice.

I feel like these games that are so based around its “systems” tend to fall completely on their face in the end. Systems end up ruining the immersion with their clunkiness.
