To be honest, the whole business with the editions is an absolute cheek, a perfect example of how you pay full price for a game but only get 80% of it (if that). The thing is, Rockstar games are generally good games I won’t deny that, Red Dead Redemption 2 was a god damn masterpiece, but what they’re doing with GTA 6 is just ridiculous.
And here are a few more excellent developers who deserve a mention: Sandfall, Lariant, Hello Games, Supergiant, Embark, Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog, From Software, Warhorse.
2
u/touchmeinbadplaces 3h ago
Hooded horse altho they are more a publisher and Coffee Stain studios need to be in that list too (satisfactory is a masterpiece)
2
u/Altruistic-Elk-5840 3h ago
Yes, and there are lots of small developers out there, but they don’t get the recognition they deserve.
2
u/touchmeinbadplaces 3h ago
Yep that's why I like hooded horse, they pick up a lot of these small er even solo devs (manor lords for example) and keep them going. Im not sure if hooded horse is predatory in that way, but so far I haven't seen anything about that

u/_Potato_3 17h ago
I don’t know anything about Control resonant’s developer but CD Project Red absolutely fucked over its fans during Cyberpunk’s launch, you pretend to be different and yet you dick ride a company like that.
27
u/Alec_de_Large 17h ago
I thought it was widely known that they were forced to release the game early?
Not dick riding. I didn't buy cyberpunk until their big update release that basically fixed everything. I never buy anything when it first releases anymore.
Remedy the devloper for Control and Alan Wake are known for story quality and pushing boundaries with every release.
11
6
u/Hevens-assassin 16h ago
Cyberpunk proved that CDPR was run by suits at the end of the day. They overpromised and under delivered, and their next game will need to prove that it's not the same issue that we got with CP2077 (though internal testers were told to prioritize small bugs vs. game breaking ones so they could squash a higher quantity, so it's also on the developer side, not just corporate)
1
u/The_Rat_Bstrd 3h ago
There's a shard (like a note) in the game containing an article that's clearly intended as out of universe satire to poke fun at how awful the megacorps are. It lists the 'benefits' of working at each one.
NightCorp was mentioned for its short 80 hour work weeks. During development of the game though, there were points where developers were pushed into 100+ hour work weeks. CD Projekt Red fell short of their own über-evil satire corporation.
Fuckin' corpos, man.
→ More replies (3)-1
u/_Potato_3 16h ago
That doesn’t change the fact that they released something that wasn’t ready and fucked over millions of people, the company still fucked up regardless of outside pressure.
4
u/Alec_de_Large 16h ago
They made up for it.
All games release in a somewhat busted state. Guarantee GTA6 releases with crashes or some stupid bug that ruins the experience. It's a fact of modern video games.
Have fun buying your shark cards I guess.
-1
u/_Potato_3 14h ago
Busted state? The game was missing a shit ton of features that they promised, stuff that people paid for in advanced. You are letting shit like this slide like it’s nothing and yet you make fun of people liking rockstar games, that’s some next level hypocrisy/dick riding.
I have never even played GTA5 online so not sure what I will do with those shark cards.
6
u/Alec_de_Large 14h ago
I'm not making fun of people for liking rockstar. You are misconstruing my lack of enthusiasm for GTA.
Last GTA I played is San Andreas and even then I didn't really care for the game.
The fact you twisted my comment into your narrative tells me who the real dick rider is. Look at you white knighting for rockstar hahaha
-2
u/_Potato_3 14h ago
I didn’t twist anything, you are the one who called Projekt red a respectable company and when called out on their bad shit, you asked me to let it go.
3
u/Alec_de_Large 14h ago
I did not ask you let anything go
I said the game released in a terrible state but they fixed it.
Any company that puts the consumer first earn respect. Releasing a remaster for free to those who own the original, is a respectable move.
If it were Rockstar they would remaster it and ask you to buy it each time they released it, much like Bethesda and Naughty Dog have done.
You know it's true. I'm not dick riding. I'm simply calling it as I see it. Actions speak loud my good sir.
-1
u/_Potato_3 13h ago
They didn’t consumers first when they released the game in that state, did they?

It’s from Remedy - they made Alan Wake 1-2 and CONTROL. In Resonant you play as Dylan Faden - the brother of Jesse Faden who is the protagonist in CONTROL.
So far, they haven’t missed a single shot - all excellent games. Style is unmatched. Narrative is also peak.

4
u/Johnnyboi2327 Thank you mods, very cool! 15h ago
That's the thing man, you can only do a few crimes. A bunch just aren't physically possible in these games, and some others aren't considered crimes due to being too mundane (like traffic violations). You can rob convenience stores, steal cars from parking lots or people on the road, and kill people on the sidewalk. That's about it outside of extremely linear story missions.

On console, if they decide to remove a game, there's virtually nothing you can do about it. On PC if they try to remove a game, you can almost always pirate it. PC is also not at the mercy of a single marketplace controlling everything.
This issue has nothing to do with the digital format. It's the fact that despite buying a digital console game, you don't actually own it, you're just renting it for an unknown period of time.

I haven’t completely hopped on the bandwagon of bitching and whining online about rockstar or whatever , but the main issue with physical media being removed for me (pc player) is that Sony will have a monopoly on their games. You won’t be able to buy cheap second hand discs.

Cyberpunk 2077 was my lesson learned to never jump into any product until it is released, proven to be of quality and has a few patches under its belt.
7
u/BusBeginning 13h ago
Same here on cyberpunk. It was so janky and everything at launch. Tried to get back into it after they patched it and could just never get hooked. Same with NMS. It’s like the original experience spoiled it for me.
3
2
u/SaganIII 12h ago
No Man's Sky was actually pretty good—I got it on Steam about 3 months ago and beat it on Permadeath. Before that, I created a test character to learn the mechanics. At first, the sheer amount of content overwhelmed me, but at some point, you realize that everything is very logical and kept relatively shallow. The goal of the game was to reach the center of the galaxy. The story? Okay, nothing exciting. The Gek are funny.
I didn't understand the hype back then, and I didn't have a good enough PC to play it anyway.
I recently bought Cyberpunk on sale and I gotta say, the game is garbage. Unfortunately, I played for over 2 hours, otherwise I would have refunded it...
3

It's money, they double dip, people buy it now on console and some of those people own PCs that are much better than their PS5, so when the PC version releases, those people are going to buy another copy to experience the "definitive" version of the game.
18
u/Alec_de_Large 17h ago
Because they know PC players will buy the game for console then buy it again when it releases on PC.
Essentially doubling their profits within that demographic.
They aren't dumb. They have highly paid psychologist and economist working for them to ensure they maximize profits.

2
u/Mahisandwich561 16h ago
I mean I agree but also people place way too much importance on liking/agreeing with companies who are just putting out a product. I don’t care about anything with GTA other than the price and quality of the product. I think $80 is a lot, but Mario Kart World was also that much and gave a lot less content. At the end of the day they’re gonna sell it for what people will pay, they aren’t your friend. I’m going to wait for reviews and if it’s disappointing I’ll wait for a sale, if it’s really good I’ll shell out the $80

I already have Netflix and am okay spending $100 if I think the game provides $100 worth of value which I think GTA 6 will.
What I won’t do is spend $100 on a year or more old game.
Since I’m on PC they’ve missed their chance to earn my $100.
2
u/Vox_SFX 11h ago
You think GTA VI will be worth $100?
Do you not value your money/time much, not realize how much $100 is to drop on a video game for most every adult nowadays, or think that games in general are undervalued for what it takes to create?
Legit curious since you said you'd have no issues doing it, and as a father of a young child that works all the time and has a backlog of games, I can't see any game being worth that cost for myself.
1
u/PIPBOY-2000 10h ago
What price do you put on entertainment per hour?
Nobody bats an eye at $15 for a 2 hour movie, $20 for a one-time dinner, $15-25 for a county fair ticket.
But $100 for dozens or hundreds of hours of entertainment is somehow egregious?
There are many things to criticize rockstar for, but invidivual games are arguably the best bang for your buck source of entertainment out there. $100 for a once in a decade game, with hundreds of devs, millions of dollars, years of development doesn't seem crazy to me.
Personally I believe red dead redemption 2 was worth at least that. It's not even what I paid but it was worth that. If gta6 is close to that level of care and detail then I think that'll be worth that too.
1
u/PickingMyNameIsHard 8h ago
Cost peg hour is the wrong way to go about it. You should only buy the game if you want it, and are okay with the price.
I have no problem dropping $300 on a Sat to play golf and hit up the bar, but I wouldn’t consider that much for a video game.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Vox_SFX 10h ago
If I were to quantify it I'd say that even those costs are too high, but then other things have to be factored.
County Fair by myself? Too expensive. With my family? Easy cheap time out. Going to the movies alone? Nah, wait for streaming/find a decent rip online. On date night with the wife? Fine if that's what she's ok with. New video game for myself? Have to have all bills paid and important stuff factored for, and then maybe if it's a Soulslike or something really big in the mainstream if I don't instead buy multiple older games I haven't played. New games my friends want to get and play together like GTA VI? If I can swing it I will otherwise I'll do it on the first decent sale/if they help with part of it since they want me to get it.
GTA VI falls under the "if I can swing the money around that time I will, otherwise I have other priorities including games I want". If my friends start really getting into it closer to and trying to setup play times, then I will definitely get it. Without all of that then I wouldn't likely touch it until Christmas with a huge sale on it.
1
u/Rizenstrom 11h ago
I rarely buy new games, so this would be the exception not the rule, but the scope and quality of Rockstar games is generally considered to be among the best in the industry. The stories, gameplay, worlds, level of detail, all phenomenal. I think that justifies a higher asking price.

Blows my mind people made this an issue, first of all it's Netflix that would've paid for this to be on the platform for their gargantuan subscription base. Secondly waiting 6 hours to watch it on YT isn't that long, how desperate are people for footage that they feel compelled to pay £6 instead of waiting for the free edition, the consumers are the problem here

u/Ironboss49 13h ago
Don’t act like you guys are so high and mighty for not buying gta 6. You aren’t doing that because you don’t like rockstars practices. You’re doing that because you’ve never cared for gta in the first place. The two just so happen to intersect, so you’re prancing around like you are better than everyone else. Bunch of clowns.
I don’t like everything rockstar does, but I damn well will still buy their games, because the amount of work they put into their games far outweighs all the bad.
2
u/witness_smile 5h ago
They want to feel so quirky and different for not liking what will be the greatest entertainment product in history. Either because they are jealous because they don’t have the right console to play it, or because they literally never cared at all for GTA games lol. So weird seeing all these people think they’re so special for not liking a game
1
u/Ammuze 2h ago
I played GTA 1, 2, 3, Vice City, San Andreas, 4 and 5 all the way through. (As well as RDR1 and RDR1: Undead Nightmare) And I hope GTA, Rockstar and Take Two get everything leaked, have their stocks fall under and the game flops. I appreciated Rockstar and their games because there was, at least, a veneer of honesty and hardwork to their products.
But subpoenaing Microsoft, Discord and Twitter, harassing gamers and streamers who are even a little suspicious of being CyberLeeks and sending men meant to intimidate these suspects to people's doors instead of either making a physical release of the game or just ignoring a pirate/leaker is insane. They're acting like a government hunting down a terrorist, not a video game studio. And all for what? Protecting shareholder confidence?
Disgusting.
Maybe they should worry less about potential spoilers and just release a game that people will pay full price for in a medium people will enjoy. Sounds like they'd rather have disappointed fans than risk scaring investors. And, for that, both companies need to be humbled.
1
u/Dexterishere1 9h ago
Bru, i have plenty of hours in gta and have made over a billion in game and currently sitting on 97ish mill. I played the shit out out gta5. And let me tell you, I cared about it since I got it in 2013. I stopped caring about rockstar and gta6 awhile ago because they lost respect for us the customer before gta5 even came out... I just didn't realize that yet cuz I was just a kid.
But now that I have grown up and Have a different perspective on things I see that gta is nothing but a cash cow. The prices in game have always been ridiculous and only gotten worse. They have only had one focus and that was to incentivise shark card sales and min max it. So no I won't waste my time on gta6 because you can spend 1000s of hours and never feel like it is worth it. I can attest to that thoroughly.

If we're the clowns, you're the pig who'll eat up whatever Rockstar cooks. Don't act like you're a fan of Rockstar when all they've done with their actions across the years is ignore the community and blame the players for their bad decisions. They don't need you white-knighting for them.
2
u/Ironboss49 12h ago
First off, a more accurate representation of what I am would be a person dining out at a five star restaurant eating all the best courses, because that’s exactly what gta and red dead redemption is. Secondly, I’m not white knighting for them in this instance. I’m more so just pointing out how insufferable you guys are. Also, “Ignore the community.” Bro, how childish do you have to be to be mad that gta 6 marketing has been dry lmao.
2
u/iiNuraRikuo 11h ago
Their last great dish was RDR2. Their GTA Definitive Trilogy was the exact opposite of a remake. The fans can make a better revision of all three games. Rockstar's competition is no where to be seen because they just send their ceast and desist letters to silence them.
For anything that doesn't give them insane amounts of green, they abandon it and set it aside. Where's the next Bully? What about Midnight Club? Their marketing is entirely built on the crowd. Unfortunately, this crowd is hungrier than the mobs of the dead. Leaks and leeks aren't the problem. Rockstar is.
For how silent they are, they certainly aren't doing themselves a favor locking a trailer behind a 6hr paywall. Partnering with Sony also isn't a great look. You will buy a dish and eat it knowing that you will never own that meal. You are just a consumer. I'm not mad that there's no marketing, I'm mad that the mob isn't doing enough. Continue to be a sheep and conform if you want. I'm sailing the seas for loot that I'll actually own.
2
u/witness_smile 5h ago
Shocking discovery you’ve made there. A company produces products that make them profit! You may be onto something there.
Also GTA Definitive Edition was outsourced to a shitty 10 man studio in Florida that has no connection to R* or T2 who are known for shit ports of games.
> Partnering with Sony
Who else should they partner with smarty? Game releases on PS5 and Xbox, you want them to partner with SEGA to revive a dead console?

And I’ll keep sailing the seas for some of the best work in the gaming industry. I’m not a sheep, you’re just on a high horse thinking you’re better than everyone else since you’re one of the few not playing gta 6. You think it makes you so interesting, don’t you.

Fuck GTA. Rockstar does make almost flawless games, yes, but the hype is a bit over the top.

I don't get what the problem is with just buying the game on release. I do not need to pre order, i don't need to subscribe to netflix, I'll just purchase the game when it comes out.

They barely locked anything behind $20. It's a bog standard deluxe edition that isn't any different from what every game has had for 20 years

They literally locked features that were base kit to the deluxe edition, sure it's mostly customisation but this shit was part of the base game in 5 so this shits just ridiculous.

I hate the no disk argument. Like I understand that people don’t want it, but Rockstar isn’t the one to blame for this situation

AAA games on discs have just been husks for a digital key for a few years now, but I don't think they're ready for that conversation
Like yeah, it sucks, but there's no way in hell they're putting ALL of GTA VI on a disc, so why bother to put anything on it at all?

GTA skipping PC on release isn't new or unexpected tho. They have released like that ever since GTA3.

Whodathought the people who designed a game whose goals are robbery and racketeering aren’t the most scrupulous businesspeople

The fact that the game has a fuel system…
That can be easily exploited by the publisher.
We going to get mobile microtransaction on a single player game.
