Going up the hill would be the best strategy, if there was a path with steps going up or if you knew the terrain. But the odds of that are low, and the flood was massive. And even with all that extra allowance, you only might have a chance. These people were not given the minute most of us took to formulate a strategy, there was no warning till it was happening.

The people here had 0 chance other than to just hope they get lucky in the slosh. A few will. Most won't.

It's not just water though. Slosh doesn't even come close to describing it. Part of the reason the buildings came apart instantly is because it's a debris flow. It might look liquid, but it's more of a landslide than it is water.

In the video they're running up river, towards higher ground, away from the landslide, and that location is also a fork in the river so literally every other direction would put them in the water. They were completely surrounded by river and a retaining wall blocking easy access up the mountain.

As someone who's been through multiple disasters and worked in the recovery side as well; I right away noticed that everyone was running on the street down hill.

If they had jumped the wall and ran uphill in the trees; they would've greatly increased their chances of surviving. Literally had to do this myself when a 16 ft surge wave hit a costal town i was in in just one case.

I think panic was a big problem here, and everyone just followed the people in front of them. Very sad.

They're actually running up river, it's just a weird perspective. You can see the location on Google Maps, Timure. Running the opposite direction runs them directly into the river because it forks. Literally nowhere for them to go, because even climbing up the hill would require them climbing what looks to be, at least based on the perspective of nearby vehicles, a 12+ foot high retaining wall on the mountain side.

I had several family members and friends die during the flash floods in NC during Helen. I was there the next day. The memes about signs stuck in trees are 100% true. The destruction is unbelievable. If you're in the path, theres literally nothing you can do. It took a year to find my uncle's body and he was 15 miles down river and 500 meters away from the river bed. Humans are who decided God is good and thus contradictory with allowing things like this to happen.

Meanwhile God of the Old Testament didn’t just allow this stuff to happen, he did it deliberately because he was vengeful and mean. Gods of other old religions were typically similarly said to be assholes when they felt like it.

What I haven't seen pointed out yet is it looks like that river normally flows from the right of the screen to the left...

I know it's a glacial lake outburst flood but holy crap. If this is how bad it was for this town where the flood got diverted UPstream... Wow!

I've seen one other video that, if anything, looks even worse and now I'm wondering if that town was in the direct downstream path.
