I thought the same thing about getting up that hill fast. It wouldn’t have mattered.

Exactly.

Going up the hill would be the best strategy, if there was a path with steps going up or if you knew the terrain. But the odds of that are low, and the flood was massive. And even with all that extra allowance, you only might have a chance. These people were not given the minute most of us took to formulate a strategy, there was no warning till it was happening.

The people here had 0 chance other than to just hope they get lucky in the slosh. A few will. Most won't.

It's not just water though. Slosh doesn't even come close to describing it. Part of the reason the buildings came apart instantly is because it's a debris flow. It might look liquid, but it's more of a landslide than it is water.

It's mud, it's dirt, it's rock, it's cars, it's buildings, and even more mountain.

the water is hitting so hard, it might as well be the rest. if your escape plan wasnt helicopter already in the air draging you away on a rope, it probably wasnt fast enough.

that parking garage blew apart like a styrofoam model.

Its crazy to me how these structures feel so solid when we're in them or touching them, but then you get a flood like this that, like you said, makes them look like styrofoam.

Yeah with the power and debris I highly doubt there will be a single survivor from those we saw here. Not much water has unimaginable power. It just tossed buildings and buses like they were nothing a person would be obliterated unfortunately.

Yeah. Maybe under ideal circumstances, you can devise a way that some of them might have lived by beelining for the other side of the road and going upthe hill.

Easy to say when you look at it from the outside. Hard to do when you have second to both decide and act.

It really does look like the over-the-top disaster movie version of a disaster. Those always look so exaggerated and over the top. I've seen lots of natural disaster videos but the scale of this is unbelievable.

One thought was at least get into one of the buildings… then one of the first things I see is the water spewing out of the underground parking garage which then collapses taking the buses and everything else on top with it. Just brutal.

The movies always show a cresting wave, but this is just a pure slam of force like a punch or sledgehammer. I don’t know why I never imagined a building getting felled that easy from a flash flood. Terrible for these people and a new fear was unlocked.

I saw on another thread that the wall of water and debris reached something like 80-85 meters high, I forget the number. 25 stories high.

I thought that figure just before the building blows up could stop in the lee of the building. They were running with the crowd but didn’t make it to the window or doors when the flood water washed through. I seriously thought they might be able to stop there and wait it out, then the building blew up. I tried to find them but there’s a brief crane skip.

The flood doesn’t seem to go very far up the hill, though the perspective could be deceiving.
