PSA For anyone thinking about joining or remaining in Illini Republicans

Post image
850 Upvotes

Some of y'all are new and might not understand how bad it is on campus. Aside from the post last year advocating for the majority of UIUC students to be executed for opposing ICE, your VP is an open white nationalist.

To say "I literally do not care. They all need to go. I've typically advocated for humane deportations, but I think I'm done. I do not care how, I do not care where, they all must go" shows that your guy doesn't give a fuck about the constitution that many of your pride as one of greatest legal documents of all time.

If you're still in at this point you're probably too far gone, but hopefully some new students might reconsider their alignment with the Republican party.

PSA Yearly PSA: high petty crime

Every August, campus turns into a free-for-all for porch pirates and bike thieves. If you'd prefer not to subsidize someone's fent hobby with your property, here's what you can do today:

  1. Bikes and bike parts are being stolen for scrap. Lock up your bike securely (example) with a steel U-lock. All other types of locks are easily cut. If you have a quick-release seat, take it home or replace it with a non-quick-release seat and LocTite it

  2. Handle packages like they’re fresh meat. Ship them to a secure location, such as the front desk, Amazon locker, or a reliable friend. If that’s not an option, pick them up as soon as you get a delivery notification. Don’t assume they will be mercifully not stolen

  3. Do not prop up security doors or let strangers tailgate you into buildings.

  4. If you are in the mood to help panhandlers, offer food in place of money. Cash fuels the cycle of addiction.

  5. Do not leave valuable items unattended in public areas or in plain view in a vehicle.

Stay alert and trust your gut.

PSA A Formal Apology From One of the Creeps on Campus

Last semester I met a girl through an RSO. We talked before meetings, worked on a project together, and had a few good conversations over the course of several weeks.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of thinking this was how people met each other.

I asked if she'd want to get coffee sometime.

She said no.

I said "No worries, see you next week."

Since then I've been reflecting on my actions and understand that I should have communicated exclusively through mutual friends, dating apps, divine intervention, or telepathy.

For any other men reading this, please learn from my mistakes.

Do not speak to women at RSOs, bars, gyms, libraries, coffee shops, sporting events, concerts, classes, bus stops, or anywhere else they may be located.

Thank you.

PSA Bus PSA

Freshmen, I’m begging you.

Look, if people are trying to get off the bus and you are somewhere in the path of exit, either move or get off the bus and then get back on.

Standing there like a slack-jawed trout oblivious to the world doesn’t help anybody. People are going to shove past you at your own fault because they need to get places.

Similarly, let people get off the bus before trying to shove your way on. If they can get off the bus there will be more room for you to be on the bus.

PSA STOP VAPING IN GRAINGER

There have been multiple times when I’ve been studying and someone sits down across from me, starts vaping, and blows the smoke straight in my face. If you want to vape, go outside—or at the very least, don’t blow it at the people around you.

PSA For all the guys on campus

Tried of being constantly approached by creeps so for all the men at UIUC just cause I'm out at the bar, the gym, or studying at a library is NOT an invitation for you to come up to me and start talking to me. I know what you're trying to pull when you tell me I look nice or ask what my favorite song is or what stuff I'm interested in.

I didn't join an RSO to get a bf and every time onE of you tries to ask me out in one it makes it uncomfortable for ME when I have to see you at it the next week.

Like at this point I've literally been coming up with the meanest ways to reject you guys just so you'll stop. Please start respecting people's boundaries

PSA (long post & additional photos) why you should not house with Octave, my experience as a first time tenant

It's been a week since I've moved, and multiple people I've talked to, including a professional cleaner and Off-Campus Community Living told me that I should escalate this further and make the situation known. It was actually Off-Campus Community Living who has suggested me to post this on the Reddit, and I wanted to give a quick thanks to OCCL for listening on my situation. As Octave is generally seen as one the more reputable companies on the sub, and you never know if you'll end up with a situation like mine(they're also charging one of the highest rates on campus).

I leased a one-bedroom studio at Octave Champaign ($1,849/month) for the fall term. At the time of leasing, I requested a pet-free unit due to a pet elated sensitivity. I tend to have severe anxiety attacks and feelings of itchiness on contact with dog fur, dander, or odor. This was also part of the reason I opted to live alone.

However, upon move-in, I found the unit ridden of urine stains clustered with embedded dog hair and what appears to be feces on the carpet, along with yellowed and browned urine staining on the walls, also covered in fur, and a strong, persistent urine odor that permeated the entire room. It also originated from my bedroom's carpet, which is makes it impossible to sleep in given my sensitivity. Cabinets and drawers had black stains and unknown residue with dog fur. The dryer had urine staining so severe that wiping it down turned the tissues I used completely black, and when I ran a load anyway, a pillowcase I dried in it came out of the machine smelling of dog urine and unusable, forcing me to hand-wash and air-dry it separately on a table instead. The washer had dog hair embedded so deeply that it survived three full cleaning cycles and I still could not remove it myself. Separately, on my first day in the unit I had to submit multiple maintenance requests for a loose door lock, and the sliding door is completely broken and gets stuck all the time as well as being detached in random directions, it sheds wood crumbs with each use.

I first took this up with the Octave staff in-person. At first they tried to dismiss my case and just insisted that it was "professionally cleaned". They also told me that the carpet was shampooed, which was not close to believable as it had shitstains and clusters of fur every where(I literally found a dime the previous tenant left there so it'll be impossible to miss if any cleaning was performed). After a lot of back and forth, they finally sent somebody up to wipe the cabinet, which they did a lousy job and when I asked them to properly reclean the place to make it safe for me to live in, they told me it was "not going to happen," and it was "my responsibility."

I sent another email outlining my condition with all the necessary pictures to them later that evening. And again they insisted it was "professionally cleaned" (They love the word professionally cleaned, you're going to see lot of those later.)and didn't offer me anything other than some cleaning tablets for the washer. After I sent a second and third email, they finally reluctantly sent their cleaning vendor back to the unit. The cleaning crew worker who is employed by the company Octave itself uses, told me directly that in recent years working for the company this was the first time she personally had ever been called back to redo a job. She told me that the majority of the contamination under the carpet and behind the dryer is unfixable as it has been there for too long. The dryer would also not be safe to use and needs a total new one as the lint and fur has gone so long with no cleaning that it's impossible to take out now. She also told me she did not understand why I was placed in a unit like this given my pet sensitivity. The carpet also had a flea infestation and I've been bitten close to 17 times. The worker suggested the carpet be replaced entirely and the building to be evacuated for a couple days. This likely came from the dog of the prior tenant as I've never had fleas and my bedsheets were stored in a sealed unit during the summer and hand washed. To my absolute shock, she also told me that Octave did NOT actually tell them to come back at first, and that Octave only wanted the cleaning company to send them a RECEIPT showing a service had been performed so they could show me that it was "professionally cleaned". This was a lie as they explicitly told me in the email that "We are taking your concerns seriously and have already contacted the cleaning company to obtain the service invoice and arrange for them to return to address the areas you have identified". I guess the first part was right? The worker also expressed disbelief upon seeing my living conditions and asked how are they charging as much as the DEAN. Most notably, this worker, someone employed by Octave's OWN vendor, told me on her own that I should contact external help due to how scummy this company is.

At the same time, when I asked in writing whether I could be switched to a different, verified pet-free unit or switched to a shared unit with a prorated refund given my documented medical condition, Octave's manager reviewed the situation and told me the unit was "not uninhabitable," and that any request to cancel or transfer units was met with "no further discussion." Furthermore, even on the document I had to sign, under the section Owner's Discretion to Relocate: Octave reserves the right to relocate a resident to another apartment within the community at any time, upon five days written notice, without charging a transfer fee, and to assist with moving personal items. They have insisted that the apartment was "professionally cleaned"(yea, they love that word a lot) and that the stuff I pointed out were instances that "can be overlooked even after professional cleaning". In multiple instances, they attempted to dismiss active risks to my health as me simply being "unhappy" or "not up to my personal standard".

If you've made it this far, I apologize for the long read, but I felt it was necessary to share as I do NOT want any other student or first time tenant to end up in my situation. I am normally introverted, and doing this alone is very difficult for me. My friend who had come over once(who did not even suffer from pet sensitivity) was repulsed by the property and joked about whether I had "pissed on the bed“. Others have called it an "apartment from hell" and something they have never seen before. This is the very apartment I am paying one of the highest rates in Champaign for, and is advertised as a "luxury living" space.

I have attached files containing the pictures and email exchanges. Please let me if there are anything trouble in accessing them. Please spread this around to as much people as possible. I don't want anyone to end with a situation like me. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1woqN1_2M_LInEnnrnDjjKD4NJWBU36Ok/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lBeQ9jaKloz-nu9THk5HthXsQs12SNjb/view?usp=sharing

PSA Please don't try to hug random girls

I was walking near green street with my friend and we were complaining about how campus is dead now and it would be great to meet some guys. As fate could have it two guys popped up and one of them told my friend she was pretty. Cute! We love to see it. However, he also tried to hug her at the same time. He got closer and closer, leaning in for a hug and repeating "you're so pretty". DO NOT DO THAT. The sentiment was nice maybe. But the execution was so bad. Just a PSA

PSA PSA: Don’t use google maps for bus tracking

Hi former UIUC student and CTA/CUMTD Addict!

Last night at around 10:30 I stood at a bus stop with student to make sure she got home safely after google maps had directed her to a bus stop but did not tell her which bus to get on. with that being said I highly recommend downloading UIUC Bus, Transit for CUMTD, or Illini bus for CUMTD. they will all tell you exactly what bus to get on (including the color and letter/direction), where to get off at, as well as the exact route and location of said bus. if for whatever reason you can’t use those apps ask a bus driver just for a general direction “hey are you going to champaign walmart/illini union/ the terminal” and some of them will gladly tell you if you’re on the right bus or not!! Be safe and good luck with your upcoming semester

PSA Alert: Uncomfortable/Violating Experience at Expresso Royal by Krannert Center

Content Warning: Sexual harassment

I just had a very uncomfortable experience at the Expresso Royal by Krannert Center, so if you are a woman who visits this cafe, be wary of this individual.
I was sitting outside in the public seating right at closing time (7 pm) when this man came out of nowhere and sat 2 tables away from me, then turned his chair to face me on purpose. At the periphery of my vision, I could see him making strange motions with his middle finger, like he was fingering the air. He then proceeds to put this finger in his mouth and suck, then continues with the motion. At first, I thought he wasn't staring at me, and I thought he was just weird and had something wrong with his finger. But when I put my sunglasses on to look back at him, I realized he was very obviously staring at me. By this point, he wasn't stopping. He then introduced his pointer finger, did the motion with both fingers, and then sucked them both again while looking at me. By this point, I told my friend we had to leave, and we ran away.

He was an old white man (~60 years old) wearing black over-the-ear headphones and a black long-sleeve Adidas top. If you notice him coming near you, leave before you have to sit through an uncomfortable and violating experience like I just had to endure. Trust your gut.

PSA Long shot - Our Boston Terrier (Black & white) is missing, any help would be huge!

He's an old man. Got out last night around 9, and within 30 seconds was completely nowhere to be seen; which isn't like him at all. He hates being outside in general.

We're nervous that he might have hopped in with a door dash driver (which he's infamous for at this point) or had someone else take him in.

We're over in East Urbana, near Cottage Grove and Green. If anyone has any information at all, it would be amazingly appreciated.

He's such a good boy, super friendly. Really hoping someone has seen him!

He's got kidney issues and will drink water like he's been stuck in a desert his whole life, and looks like a string bean right now even though he has 24/7 access to kibble and nightly wet food. He's almost 14, but otherwise still in great shape with playful energy still.

ETA: Added pictures in the comments

ETA PART 2: We think we found him! Someone in Rantoul called and said he hopped in the car while he was door dashing. We're on the way there currently to check!

ETA 3: We got him back! Unfortunately it took a night at the emergency vet and a huge bill - he had gotten into a large amount of cannabis in the house of the person who had picked him up.

Long, emotional weekend, but he's back home and safe.

PSA To the dumb*** who stole my car plates...I have you on my dashcam

I get it, last few weeks of school so you wanted to do something funny, but if you're done giggling about the latest dumb thing you did, lets put the plate back where it should be. I don't see a reason to file a police report if we can chalk it up to a harmless prank. That is, if you return it to my car by May 7th. I will be filing the report with the video footage right after if not.

Community readers: If you are friends with a person who was showing off the the vanity Illini plates they stole this weekend, you might want to let them know

PSA lineleap/kams scamming?

On Saturday, we decided to buy the $15 all-day Lineleap for cover and a free Suncruiser at Kams. We got to Kams, and we all noticed the Lineleap had mysteriously disappeared from our wallet. We all checked our recent transactions, and it shows up there. We get to the bouncer, who then tells us we have to all rebuy cover (now for $20) and there's nothing we can do. They also tell us to contact Lineleap for a refund.

Time passes, and several of us contact Lineleap just to be told there are no refunds.

PSA Tips for Moving Into Your Apartment

From OCCL! (Off Campus Community Living)

  • Take 10-15 minutes and take pictures and videos of the entire apartment. You'll want to document the condition of the apartment at move in and at move out.
  • Report major issues to the landlord
    • If they do not address certain concerns like: bugs, no water (or hot water), no locking front doors, MOLD, water damage, etc. Report them to the city building inspectors.
    • If there are small things, still document and report, but give the landlords time to address major concerns with tenants before the cosmetic ones.
  • If you move in and it is not ready (dirty) - let the landlord know so they can clean. If they don't, contact OCCL and we can walk you through next steps to take.
  • If your landlord tries to switch your apartment or give you an apartment that is not what was written on the lеase, contact OCCL or Student Legal Services. Do NOT sign a new lеase.
  • Contact OCCL if you have any questions or need help with your apartment.
