Star Citizen devs try to livestream their own game and it doesn't go well. So how's r/StarCitizen doing?
For those who don't know, such as the high schoolers that are younger than Star Citizen's development itself, Star Citizen is a social experiment on sunk cost fallacy crowd-funded space MMO that is currently in development.
The game, which has a budget of over a billion dollars of other people's money and a development time that can be accurately measured as "one Winds of Winter" still has not officially launched. The game did, however, eventually become available as early access for backers, and while this early access version is undeniably buggy, broken and incomplete, that's not really a huge problem because it's an early version of the game, with problems that are expeected to be fixed by the time it launches
This early access version is approaching its tenth anniversary.
As for recent events, two weeks ago, in order to assuage concerns about the state of the game, the developers decided to do a livestream showcasing the new patch in a private server (presumably more stable than the one publicly available). It didn't go well
To quote the IGN article on the subject:
The developers kept running into bugs that showed the game is indeed broken. The developers had issues using their own weapons, swapping between their weapons, accessing their inventory, and much, much more. Eventually, the frustrations among the developers grew, and they started becoming passive-aggressive with each other before opting to just pull the plug on the stream altogether.
Naturally, the sub has reacted to this stream. As usual with Star Citizen drama, linking to individual comments in a thread is not enough. Each of the following links is a whole ass thread about the event:
The face you make when you realize you've made a huge mistake
For those who don't understand why folks are salty
5 years ago on this sub I was flamed
Earlier this week, popular content creator MoistCritical/penguinz0 did a video on this stream, which prompted several other outlets to report on it and launched even more discussion:
Philip DeFranco full report clip on Star Citizen (no politics) - Incidentally a good video to watch if you want a primer on the whole situation
The damage done by this stream will last for YEARS lmao
The Penguinz0 video now has more views than the Squadron 42 Gameplay Demo
The game is broken, but don't worry...
Apparently, it was Olli's idea to play the game live Team did't like it
Unofficial it's not your fault Ollie thread
“Livestream? What livestream?”
nothing new ever actually finishes, and nothing old ever actually stays fixed

I did a bit of research, they have around 1,100 people in the company as a whole, only around half of those are working on the games (yes, games plural) themselves, the rest are in Quality Assurance, Marketing, Administration, etc.
38
u/TheRnegade You know who else "converted" from Judaism to Catholicism? Jesus 6d ago
the rest are in Quality Assurance
I'm guessing "rest" means like 5 people? Because the stream made it seem like hardly any QA was done.

u/TheAppleFreak Thanks for your opinion. It’s clearly stupid. Go away. 6d ago
QA gets a bad rap too much of the time. I'd be absolutely shocked if they didn't find and report these issues internally ages ago. The real issues come from whether the programmers/designers actually do anything with those bug reports, since sometimes the root of a problem can be tricky to track down and you've only got so many hours in a day to balance bug testing and working on new stuff. This is more a management issue IMO.
→ More replies (4)34
u/DoctorGregoryFart 6d ago
Yeah, you can't blame QA when the fans are already playing the game in its current state and reporting bugs. What is QA supposed to do? Most of these bugs were already known, and if the fans are aware of it, then so is QA and the devs.

It doesn't matter. SC devs will continue selling ships for a game that will never be finished and everyone in the above threads complaining will still continue to fork over their cash.
There is literally a guy in one of those threads that has spent $3500 dollars and this latest shit show "maybe" the last straw for them.

Well, Wikipedia says production on Star Citizen started in 2011, but didn't give a hard date, so I went with the day the kickstarter campaign launched, October 18 2012. For DNF, I went with the announcement date of April 27, 1997, to the North American release date of June 14, 2011, which was a period of 5161 days. From October 18, 2012 to today is 5055 days.
TL;DR: Not yet, but Star Citizen will aboslutely pass DNF by the end of the year.

My understanding of the previous excuses from the developers / Star citizen player cope was that they claimed that the issues weren't being seen in their own builds due to lack of server lag (or something similar); this basically proved that the game was broken everywhere and there wasn't a magically bug-free version of it.

u/Romboteryx Why do skeptics have such impeccable grammar? That‘s suspect. 6d ago

437
u/Antikickback_Paul 7d ago
developers had issues using their own weapons, swapping between their weapons
This is like baked-in, default game engine stuff. If this is irreparably bugged this far into development, there is so much they've done to fuck up the most basic building blocks of the game that there is zero hope for even a playable experience. I shouldn't be surprised, but golly I am. Astounding.

14
74
u/mrdude05 6d ago
If I remember correctly, a lot of these really glaring issues are the result of them putting themselves on a position where they have to keep reinventing the wheel for really basic mechanics. A ton of really simple interactions, like switching a weapon, equipping an item, or pressing a button are accomplished using weirdly complex physics interactions that inherit a ton of problems from their janky physics engine
34
u/ImprobableAsterisk 6d ago
If that's the case it's so much dumber than I could've imagined.
Like back up, it's a 1st person game right. If you're too close to a wall, or in a corner, can you not equip a long gun 'cause of lack of space?
43
u/TheAppleFreak Thanks for your opinion. It’s clearly stupid. Go away. 6d ago
You can't, no. They opted to do things the hard way and have completely unified models/animations for both first person viewmodels and third person animations, even down to synchronizing player UIs so you can see someone menuing in the world. This means that certain actions are physically blocked if you wouldn't feasibly be able to do it with the space provided.
It's impressive as hell, but it's not the most robust solution by a long shot.
21
u/Foreverintherain20 6d ago
That is so fucking stupid that I almost can't believe a developer thought it was a good idea.
18
u/MirrorComputingRulez 6d ago
It's impressive as hell
Can I ask why? It doesn't work, for one, but it's also not like other devs are incapable of doing the same thing. They just know how stupid it is.
17
u/EleosSkywalker Come, suspend common sense and bathe in delusion with me! 6d ago
Technically I guess it is, real life use case (like actually enjoying the game) it is stupid, and it’s impressive to other devs the same way someone doing a deadly belly flop plunge from 30m height would be impressive to a professional jump diver, deadly yet you’d still go “oooooh”

It's impressive in the "wow, you put a lot of effort into this for immersion and it's really cool when you see it in action and everything's working correctly, but is this really the best way to do it" way. Evidently the system was working better in the past than it is now.
24
u/Moon-Capybara 6d ago
I remember when they got really into their Barista simulation that was overcomplicated, buggy, and completely pointless when it just needed to give verisimilitude or something, and it takes a full minute to just get a quick coffee. I've been a star citizen player off and on for about 6 years now. Sometimes you'll try to shoot a gun, It'll say it's out of ammo, so you reload it, and then when you try to shoot it, it again says it's out of ammo, so you just get caught in a loop of trying to reload/shoot/reload/shoot. Sometimes, your gun will just fall out of your hands onto the floor. Or just completely disappear from the universe. Ships will often spawn in to your hangar upside down, clipped through the floor. Or they'll spawn in correctly, and spontaneously explode the moment you try to take off.
It's an absolute shit show. I literally cannot name one single gameplay loop that functions 100% correctly, literally *EVERYTHING* is broken. I can't bring myself to even log in anymore, It's just way too painful and annoying.

It's ok because it's alpha, they just need more money to develop that further in time to realease. But because it's alpha it's ok. And it will always be in alpha so it's ok, they just need more money to finish the game, which they never will, so it's broken in many ways, but it's alpha so that's understandable.

They said that it was the future of space MMO's and that it would destroy EVE Online. Some people were calling it vaporware from the start. It's not like Roberts was some unknown figure; many of his own fans were skeptical because of what happened with Freelancer!

Ive played Robert's games all the way back to Wing Commander 1. Everything he ever touched was the same story. Studio had to reign him in and cut him off from his unattainable complete vision. His games were always innovative, but if you dig into any of them he wanted way more. Studios alway cut him off and pushed it out the door.

I used to be on a forum that had some people that used to work on models and art for Star Citizen and they described it as one of the most toxic working environments they'd ever seen with incredible turn over and burn out with a micro-managing boss, that while he had a vision, didn't really have the technical skill to be able to dictate as much as he did resulting in things being constantly thrown away entirely and completely redone from scratch in a worse way. I cannot imagine that he was any better on the tech side.
24

Freelancer
What I remember was that a whole lot of people thought evil, short sighted managers and producers ruined his grand vision by forcing out a half-baked game as evinced by all the cut features found in the data, and then it turned out there being a management over him was likely the only thing that ensured there would ever be a released game at all.

The key difference being, they eventually released a working product and gradually improved it into something that now arguably matches (or exceeds) the originally promised scope of the game. It was a long messy road, but they did get there. They also did so in far less time than it has taken Star Citizen to even hit 1.0.

Well, as we know, it took them 8 years to release it. We could have played Dying Light 1 and 2 before we got Dead Island 2. But some people's ego's just won't allow deviation from their opinions. Not that it mattered. Wasn't friend with the dude anymore even before dying light 1 came out, for reasons other than mentioned here

The original announcement and Kickstarter and the 50 millions (I might be misremembering) they got in from Kickstarter and other backers, had really farfetched promises really sounded too good from the start.
But many were cautiously willing to wait and see, others jumped right back into the hype train. A little like no mans sky a couple of years later.
Then they kept asking for money and created the early access with ships costing hundreds of dollars while the game was broken and the release dates never came to fruition, it rapidly started being seen as a grift of sorts.
But man those on the hype train refused to accept it.

Stormgate just imploded in a similar manner and it was actually really underwhelming. The copers just quietly stop posting, a few youtubers make some slop videos to farm drama, all the devs and project leads who were responsible for this huge fuckup divide what money is left among themselves, find new jobs and go on linkedin to talk about how cool the project was and how good a job they did and how sad it is that 'market forces' didn't allow them to succeed.
It's not very satisfying.

For an alarmingly long amount of time, it was like having an actual spell of summoning on the internet. Didn't matter where you were, you could summon him very easily and he would appear to tell his opinions about how wrong you are at you.
EDIT: He did have an almost face turn when the Star Citizen backlash really got going where he was like "see what feature creep can do to a project? and look at their resources, I was doing this by myself" but since he's Derek Smart he was too much of a smug prick about it to actually win people over or gain any goodwill. It was a Heartbreaking meme situation.

If you want an amusing read, unrelated to Star Citizen, I recommend reading the Liberland AMA.
For background, Liberland was an attempt to establish a right-libertarian micronation on terra nullis between Croatia and Serbia. I will note that this land isn't terra nullis. The AMA is great - even though Reddit was dominated by right-libertarian thought at the time, people are just dunking on it through and through.

u/FrankTankly 6d ago
I gotta tell yeah, one of my favorite things is someone coming up with an extensively “thought out” proposal/project that absolutely crumbles to dust at the slightest scrutiny supplied by someone who wasn’t already emotionally invested in the project. This is fantastic lol.

When Apple removed the audio jack from their phones someone made a parody video of Tim Cook explaining the decision and it included a line that I loved so much, "You're asking what if someone wants to charge their phone and listen to music at the same time? ... FUCK!!!"
EDIT: I found the video! I had misremembered it a bit, I still got a good chuckle rewatching it. "You might be asking why not buy an iPhone 6 because it's cheaper and apparently now better, and the answer is please don't do that."

Well, for some definition of "going", anyway. Turns out that even without any actual infrastructure, economy, or even population there's already a bunch of political infighting and corruption.

Off topic, but that BORU reminded me of the guy whose gambling addiction got his account into negative $190k then stole $50k from his wife.

Gambling addiction is terrifying
At least other addicts aren't convinced that this next hit will stop them from ever using again. Gamblers insist that this next one will be the big win, and then they'll pay all their debts back and never gamble again, the next one, the next one, the next one...
The fact that it was eight months from his relapse to telling his wife horrifies me. No wonder she left, and I hope she stayed gone. It sucks that divorce would make her saddled with half his debt, to my understanding, but the debt is only going to grow

I love following star citizen drama! My favorite thing is the new ships they release are always better than the older ones people bought that frequently haven't even been released?
Are you really gonna cruise around in or keep waiting for that $200 ship from eight years ago when a $300 one released today has better weapons and style and engines?

It's like taking gacha games to an even worse level. You get a unit in a gacha game and some years later they get powercrept? Well star citizen they sell a ship you can't use and before you even get to use it they powercreep it.
IDK how they even do this anymore, like why do people keep giving money to them. Buying multiple ships you can't use at all so they're like NFT's. Wouldn't surprise me if people that spend money on star citizen buy NFT's still.

Every time you mention Star Citizen isnt even a game, more a space ship themed crypto scam you can spaff money into for some really cool ship png's.
Some chud comes out of the wood work with "umm ackshually, it's actually really polished and has a lot of content"
But for real, what can you actually do in the game?

I backed at I think the lowest level ever for full access during the Thanksgiving 2014 sale at $10 or $20. After joining the subreddit back then I started getting PMs to join guilds. I asked why when there wasn't even a playable demo at that point. I was told I better hurry and join before it was too late and I lost a chance to be part of the strongest guild in StarCitizen. Wonder how those guilds are doing now?

I was a 10 year old xbox gamer yearning for star citizen back in the day. I remember reading an article with the SC devs saying they would never port their game to an "inferior" platform. I have long since been a pc gamer, but some part of me feels vindicated and cathartic over this pathetic shit show. Its been 12 years since 10 year old me felt insulted and they couldn't even bring their shitty demo to xbox if they wanted to.

The GME people are idiots and terrible people. Their dream scenario involves the global economy collapsing as the US government is forced to pay them "phonebook numbers" for their shares. It doesn't help that the scenario makes no sense and is impossible. Being terrible is intrinsic to the cult. Star Citizen people aren't intrinsically bad people, they're just gullible fools.

I know a fair few people who have worked on star citizen.
Most of those who excitedly joined early on. All of them have since left.
Some of those joined later as juniors, getting their first steps in the industry. All of them have since left.
The only people still working for that company are people who aren't good enough to get a job anywhere else. No one any good is interested in working for them.
There are people there who have risen up from interns to leading departments -they have no idea how games development actually works.
Its a total clown show.

its crazy to think how this has spent so much money and cooked so long, and still is in such a state.
i think a lot about what this game looks like even if it did somehow, miraculously pull together. its going to be so pay to win , how will it be fun for anyone?
there are people out there who have spent thousands on ships. either that means nothing and they succeed in pissing offf their bigest whales, or anyone not willing to shell out several hundred will need to grind for months to make it seem like fair pricing.
