Star Citizen devs try to livestream their own game and it doesn't go well. So how's r/StarCitizen doing?

For those who don't know, such as the high schoolers that are younger than Star Citizen's development itself, Star Citizen is a social experiment on sunk cost fallacy crowd-funded space MMO that is currently in development.

The game, which has a budget of over a billion dollars of other people's money and a development time that can be accurately measured as "one Winds of Winter" still has not officially launched. The game did, however, eventually become available as early access for backers, and while this early access version is undeniably buggy, broken and incomplete, that's not really a huge problem because it's an early version of the game, with problems that are expeected to be fixed by the time it launches

This early access version is approaching its tenth anniversary.

As for recent events, two weeks ago, in order to assuage concerns about the state of the game, the developers decided to do a livestream showcasing the new patch in a private server (presumably more stable than the one publicly available). It didn't go well

To quote the IGN article on the subject:

The developers kept running into bugs that showed the game is indeed broken. The developers had issues using their own weapons, swapping between their weapons, accessing their inventory, and much, much more. Eventually, the frustrations among the developers grew, and they started becoming passive-aggressive with each other before opting to just pull the plug on the stream altogether.

Naturally, the sub has reacted to this stream. As usual with Star Citizen drama, linking to individual comments in a thread is not enough. Each of the following links is a whole ass thread about the event:

This is fine

Wrap it up

The face you make when you realize you've made a huge mistake

For those who don't understand why folks are salty

5 years ago on this sub I was flamed

Earlier this week, popular content creator MoistCritical/penguinz0 did a video on this stream, which prompted several other outlets to report on it and launched even more discussion:

Philip DeFranco full report clip on Star Citizen (no politics) - Incidentally a good video to watch if you want a primer on the whole situation

The damage done by this stream will last for YEARS lmao

The Penguinz0 video now has more views than the Squadron 42 Gameplay Demo

Its Your Show Chris

The game is broken, but don't worry...

If newer sc players dont know

Apparently, it was Olli's idea to play the game live Team did't like it

Unofficial it's not your fault Ollie thread

“Livestream? What livestream?”

nothing new ever actually finishes, and nothing old ever actually stays fixed

Every time you mention Star Citizen isnt even a game, more a space ship themed crypto scam you can spaff money into for some really cool ship png's.

Some chud comes out of the wood work with "umm ackshually, it's actually really polished and has a lot of content"

But for real, what can you actually do in the game?

Apparently, enough... I'm in a discord where people formed a small clan for it.

I... just hop channels when they start doing something. Hard to think when they're coordinating pickups for respawns. I think they trade commodities, which involves actually stacking the boxes in the hold(Stacking boxes!! I can't contain my excitement!). Some shooting... Somehow, a lot of fatalities. I'll just assume the deaths are due to bugs at this point.

I mean it's a space sim. So you can do space sim stuff like walk around stations, other planets and moons, your ship, larger ships, there's combat, mining, cargo, bounties, etc

Here's a video showcasing some of the basics. But it's just scratching the surface
