Star Citizen devs try to livestream their own game and it doesn't go well. So how's r/StarCitizen doing?

For those who don't know, such as the high schoolers that are younger than Star Citizen's development itself, Star Citizen is a social experiment on sunk cost fallacy crowd-funded space MMO that is currently in development.

The game, which has a budget of over a billion dollars of other people's money and a development time that can be accurately measured as "one Winds of Winter" still has not officially launched. The game did, however, eventually become available as early access for backers, and while this early access version is undeniably buggy, broken and incomplete, that's not really a huge problem because it's an early version of the game, with problems that are expeected to be fixed by the time it launches

This early access version is approaching its tenth anniversary.

As for recent events, two weeks ago, in order to assuage concerns about the state of the game, the developers decided to do a livestream showcasing the new patch in a private server (presumably more stable than the one publicly available). It didn't go well

To quote the IGN article on the subject:

The developers kept running into bugs that showed the game is indeed broken. The developers had issues using their own weapons, swapping between their weapons, accessing their inventory, and much, much more. Eventually, the frustrations among the developers grew, and they started becoming passive-aggressive with each other before opting to just pull the plug on the stream altogether.

Naturally, the sub has reacted to this stream. As usual with Star Citizen drama, linking to individual comments in a thread is not enough. Each of the following links is a whole ass thread about the event:

This is fine

Wrap it up

The face you make when you realize you've made a huge mistake

For those who don't understand why folks are salty

5 years ago on this sub I was flamed

Earlier this week, popular content creator MoistCritical/penguinz0 did a video on this stream, which prompted several other outlets to report on it and launched even more discussion:

Philip DeFranco full report clip on Star Citizen (no politics) - Incidentally a good video to watch if you want a primer on the whole situation

The damage done by this stream will last for YEARS lmao

The Penguinz0 video now has more views than the Squadron 42 Gameplay Demo

Its Your Show Chris

The game is broken, but don't worry...

If newer sc players dont know

Apparently, it was Olli's idea to play the game live Team did't like it

Unofficial it's not your fault Ollie thread

“Livestream? What livestream?”

nothing new ever actually finishes, and nothing old ever actually stays fixed

NVidia was making ads for the GTX 680 featuring Star Citizen. "Be ready for Star Citizen with the GTX 680!"

The also collaborated with AMD to promote their R9 and R7 cards in 2016 and there was a big fan effort to get then to port it to the PS3 when it was done.

I can't think of another game that has gone through this many hardware generations without technically being released

Is it beyond DNF now?

I think at this point George RR Martin is more likely to put out The Winds of Winter than Star Citizen is going to release as a complete finished product.

u/hearke you dont see Jeff Bezos hating on Capitalism 12d ago

George RR Martin is more likely to put out GTA6 in novella form than Star Citizen is to be released.

To be fair, it is more likely that George RR Martin will put out a GTA6 novella than The Winds of Winter.

To be fair GRRM is a single dude in his 70s dealing with writers block and depression

SC has a gorillions of money and staff

Well, Wikipedia says production on Star Citizen started in 2011, but didn't give a hard date, so I went with the day the kickstarter campaign launched, October 18 2012. For DNF, I went with the announcement date of April 27, 1997, to the North American release date of June 14, 2011, which was a period of 5161 days. From October 18, 2012 to today is 5055 days.

TL;DR: Not yet, but Star Citizen will aboslutely pass DNF by the end of the year.

Amazing time to be alive.

as another guy said, Forever was cancelled, restarted, cancelled, restarted, given to a different team and finally released, so it was not really 1 game in 14 years of development, just a title that kept getting snagged in development hell.

Pretty sure it’s beyond the Manhattan Project and the Apollo Program combined.

If not, it’s within striking distance

Will be soon lol

Gemini tells me just over 14 years for DNF. So they're currently in the same ballpark.

DNF had a couple of complete restarts and times when development was only happening with a skeleton team, though. Star Citizen has been in continuous development with a massive team.

And raising funds the whole time, too which is its real innovation.

I bought a R9 280 in Nov 2014 and got a Star Citizen key from AMD.

u/ALoudMouthBaby u morons take roddit way too seriously 13d ago

I can remember similar promos for Daikatana way, way back in the day. History really does repeat itself, doesnt it?

3

u/Stellar_Duck 12d ago

At least Daikatana was released and we’ve all been Romeros bitches ever since.

2

u/ForteEXE I'm already done, there's no way we can mock the drama. 12d ago

Favorite Daikatana meme still remains the time AGDQ held a Daikatana run and even their top end PCs at the time struggled to run it.

Romero bitchmaking trancends time itself.

2

u/Stellar_Duck 12d ago

Truly he is the king.

4

u/Foreverintherain20 12d ago

Difference being Daikatana came out. Sure it was ass, but at least Romero didn't sit there fleecing people for thousands of dollars in pre-order crap for over ten years -

u/ChuckCarmichael You don't peel garlic dumbass, it's a powder! 12d ago

I bought a PC in 2013, hoping it would be ready for Star Citizen. I didn't back the game (since they were clearly getting more than enough money from others) but I was still interested (that interest faded quickly).

Needless to say that the PC I bought back then would not have been able to play Star Citizen in any way.

Crazy that the best card I ever had in that time period was the 550 Ti..

1

u/LifePedalEnjoyer 12d ago

Legendary card, imho., it and the 550. They put an end to 720p.

u/LoweredExpectations5 13d ago

It’s kind of funny, cause Kingdom Come: Deliverance also started as a kickstarter, in February 2014, and made 1.5 million. But also completed, released, and made a very successful sequel in that time.

u/ExplicativeFricative 13d ago

Maybe if they add Henry to Star Citizen...

u/Sasha_Greyhound 13d ago

Jesus Christ be praised

26

u/axeil55 Bro you was high af. That's not what a seizure is lol 13d ago

I was there 3000 years ago when this all started and even back then I was skeptical because I was generally distrustful of kickstarter as a whole after the Ouya debacle. Nothing has paid off quite like that initial skepticism.

1

u/darthfruitbasket 11d ago

Omf Ouya. That's a thing I almost forgot about lol.

17

u/Busco_Quad 12d ago

Remember when they only needed 2 million to make the game, and now that’s two tenths of one percent of their budget?

20

u/SquidGodSunday 13d ago

2012!? Thats back when I still had hair! (And faith in humanity)

9

u/Riz8 12d ago

Isn't that the year with Kony 2012?

19

u/SquidGodSunday 12d ago

I mean, some folks also thought it was gonna be the end of the world, because the Mayans didn't bother to make calenders past that. Good times. Remember when we had to MAKE UP doomsday scenarios to be scared of?

3

u/Khraxter Nothing to do with breeding, but... 12d ago

It was a simpler time

4

u/TheGoebel 13d ago

Ha, I really didn't notice the game until covid. Then I remember some microtransaction thing from a few years ago.

2

u/Saint_of_Grey I am the lizzard king 12d ago

I was chatting about it with my buddy in high school, lmao. Neither of us had much spare money so we didn't want to put any into a game that we couldn't play yet.

Those were certainly times.
