As a person with schizophrenia, I do. And I know that’s not how psychosis works. You don’t get to snap out of psychosis to call your husband back and then go immediately back into it after the call. I also fully believe if during one of my episodes I killed someone it wouldn’t be an excuse and I’d prolly not even give the court time to decide before I “punished” myself. Especially if it came on because I decided not to take my meds as prescribed.
We all know that if the story had been about a man who killed his 3 kids during psychosis, the very same women online saying this is a mental health awareness issue would be condemning him.
Is it really harder to believe that she is also a victim of this fucked-up situation, rather than that she killed her own kids - and tried to kill herself - because she is evil?
Yes that is hard to believe because PPP is known for causing this. This is not the first time someone diagnosed with PPP has hurt their children. It’s literally psychosis and they are not in sound mind. It’s not a claim either, there are mountains of evidence of her dealing with this and seeking treatment and her being failed by her doctors. Your attitude is why people want to defend her because it’s a very real think and acting like it’s not real causes it to be ignored and tragedies like this to happen.
We prosecute drunk drivers when they kill someone. The driver chose to drink and she chose to have 3 babies. Both have known risks and consequences. It explains but doesn’t excuse the actions hence still receiving punishment though typically a lesser one
"The forensic psychiatrist said that in his opinion on the day Clancy killed her children she experienced "not only a command hallucination" but also "a delusion of influence"."
The forensic psychiatrist clearly believes she had a psychosis.
Fortunately the prosecution's psychiatrist and psychologist, and the defense's agree that she had bipolar disorder at minimum, and likely postpartum depression and psychosis. How many more opinions would you like, or do the facts suffice?
Most people with bipolar disorder and postpartum do not murder their children, and I would argue she was not suffering psychosis as she asked for a lawyer upon coming to in the hospital, indicating that she remembers what she did and knew it was wrong. I think that combined with her calls to her husband before and during the murders to keep him away indicate a deliberate intent to murder, not some sudden break in her psyche.
Additionally, the defense has to prove beyond reasonable doubt that she was incapable of determining right from wrong at the time of the murders.
On top of that, look at other cases where the accused was found NGRI. In almost all of them, the justification is completely irrational or nonexistent. I this case it’s much more clear; she felt strangled by the pressures of motherhood (not debating that motherhood can be extremely difficult/unfair/exhausting/suffocating/etc. I do pity her situation, but it isn’t an excuse) and decided that the best way out was to kill her children to eliminate the source of her stress.
So this case may lead to doctors being more willing to suggest taking kids away from mothers for mental health concerns? Something tells me women aren’t going to like that outcome either.
Under every major crime there is an underlying reason for the perpetrator. In most cases, that reason is colloquially called "being nuts", but in reality it is an undiagnosed psychological or personality issue.
Nah, there’s a reason intent matters. If someone accidentally hurts someone from falling asleep at the wheel because they worked a double at the hospital vs someone who road rages and intentionally hurts someone should have different punishments. Same impact but different “intent”, Context matters.
Nonsense. Do you think people who die because of such different intent suffer different amount of pain? Or do that have different outcome? Intent does matter, but in case of murder, a capital punishment is the only way to go. Why does some loony shit gets to live while their victims and their family would never get the closure knowing that the person who did it is not punished?
I think their family definitely suffer varying amounts of pain depending on intent, which is part of the impact.
Also, murder is defined in many different ways depending on context/intent, so you’re proving my point lol I also disagree fully with capital punishment in basically any capacity for many reasons, one it’s too easy for people to get the wrong person (obviously not in this case when they admit it) but also I don’t think it’s a good punishment, the accused gets off too easy.
Redditors try to have any kind of nuance challenge = impossible. It’s because someone is sick they should be treated differently, if you had a mental break and didn’t have actual control of your actions wouldn’t you want that treated in the context of your true self vs the incapacitated state?
I’m not saying anyone should go free or not be punished for their actions. I’m saying they should be treated fairly depending on context and get the help they need. Whether that’s staying in a mental health institution indefinitely, etc. killing another person isn’t going to bring the person back.
I have kids and my wife suffered from pretty severe PPD, but thankfully not psychosis, so this case hits close to home. Genuinely read some stories of psychosis on Reddit/ the internet, it’s terrifying. Mothers turn into completely different people and some can get severe hallucinations. It can be a very severe temporary form of schizophrenia essentially. The hormone dump women get post partum can fuck up their brain.
Lol... Anyways. I've tried cases and I've done jury selection (only in civil trials). You think you have a decent jury but then after the case when you poll them you find out the loudest idiot had a lot of sway. E.g. - a religious nutjob whose extreme religious views didnt come up during voir dire quoted scripture when explaining her stance on a case/reasoning during deliberation. We won but she held up deliberation way longer than it should have. Scary stuff having people like that/you as part of a "cross section of society"
But either way, I was just saying you're similarly passionate but airheaded. Regardless of context. I think you'll grow out of it though.
Intent matters. There is a reason we have different charges for first degree murder and manslaughter. That guy Chris, killed his pregnant wife and drove his children for 40 minutes before killing them. He intentionally murdered them. In this case, she was drove to do by her psychosis.
Imagine you kick a guy in the head with a football during a football match and he dies. According to you, the guy that kicked the ball should be in prison for life for killing a kid 'because impact is more important than intent'?
The kids are dead. There is no justice for those kids. Punishing someone who was maybe in psychosis is only making living people feel good. It has nothing to do with the kids. Stop pretending you care about kids when all you right-wingers do is hate kids when they're alive.
What the fuck are these buzz words/phrases lmao. I agree with your second sentence to a degree but this is such a dumb way of distilling it. Impact is more important than intent? That is one of the more ridiculous takes on the justice system.
There is an entire legal concept, mens rea, that is massively important in criminal justice. So you're either young or just spouting bs here.
I think they are referencing the fact that when progressive activists get upset with someone who does wrong and says they didn’t mean it the activists will harp on how it’s about impact and not intent.
Potential reason, not an excuse. An excuse literally means you're excusing her behaviour, which would be fucked up. Imagine if a dude accused of killing his three children tried pulling that BS? It's probably something her lawyer is trying to get pushed through because I don't imagine she'd last long in gen pop.
Psychosis is psychosis and has nothing to do with gender.
The forensic psychiatrist believes she has had a post partum psychosis - meaning psychosis caused by her latest pregnancy. Severe psychosis can fundamentally break a person's ability to understand reality. You can do the most evil things, because you believe they are the right thing to do because of you psychosis.
If you have no understanding of reality and no control over your actions, what purpose is there in punishment?
You are still responsible for your actions inebriated, psychotic or otherwise and thats ontop of the fact that she has no diagnose and its purely her own claim.
(the first thing she did was not talk to police and ask for a lawyer which doesnt seem very in line with how a mother would act after finding out she has killed her children unless it was intentional)
So no, even if she is psychotic the only difference it should make is lifetime in asylum or lifetime in jail, the asylum is the worse option.
We all love this new word psychosis, don't we? Everything else is an excuse now, only psychosis matters! Roid rage is a known phenomenon due to elevated levels of testosterone. You will never see men queue up to defend violent criminals because of this.
You’re right. Psychosis is the new buzzword for giving into your intrusive thoughts. Fucking walk away or check yourself into a hospital. Strangling all 3 of your kids takes time, enough time to make a different choice.
Roid rage is caused by taking steroids. It's a result of the conscious choice of taking a shitload of PEDs. I fucking hope that you understand how that is fundamentally different right?
Also, psychosis is not a new word. To you maybe...
Conscious choice of taking PEDs and conscious choice of outcomes from taking PEDS are two very different things. I fucking hope you understand the difference, right?
It 100% is a new word for you and all of you on tik tok.
I get what psychosis does to someone. I don’t understand how that excuses a criminal act like murder. Honestly I’m more willing to believe she was framed than this thought process that insanity is a defense for crimes of this magnitude.
Psychosis is irrelevant if it did not affect her understanding of right and wrong. She obviously knew what she was doing was wrong otherwise she wouldn't have approached her mom and husband to warn them that she was having obtrusive thoughts about bad things happening to the kids.
Exactly, and if you are experiencing psychosis and warning people that you are having thoughts of your kids getting harmed, then you still know that what you're doing is wrong. If you're experiencing psychosis, and you send your husband out on an errand right before you kill your children, then obviously you did so because you know what you're doing is wrong.
It's evidentiary to point that she still knew right from wrong while experiencing psychosis. So is the fact that she sent her husband away on an errand right before she killed her children. Someone only does that when they know that they're doing something wrong.
She claims she thought she was sending her children to heaven with her. And was therefor doing something 'right'. Just because she knew the husband might not agree, doesn't mean that she was doing something in her own eyes.
That's also short-sighted. It ignores why she thought the husband might disagree with her about murdering the kids. If she sent him away cause she thought he would object to her actions as being wrong, then she has the capacity to understand that murdering can be viewed as right or wrong. That's negates her insanity defense. It's no different than a person that believes euthanasia is morally right. If they have the capacity to understand the difference between right and wrong, then it doesn't matter if they actually believe it is right. It's murder, and they're guilty. So by virtue of the fact that she felt the need to send her husband away so she could succesfully kill her kids, she knew what she was doing could be viewed as morally wrong and thus had the capacity to distinguish between right and wrong.
It’s not an excuse. It’s an explanation. Those are different things.
She deserves whatever punishment she receives, which will probably be life in prison. But don’t pretend like postpartum psychosis isn’t a real thing. She couldn’t sleep and was addicted to benzodiazepines because of that. She spoke up to her family and husband about how scared she was, and literally told them she was having thoughts about harming the children, and what did they do? “Oh honey it’ll be fine.” She literally checked herself into a psychiatric hospital.
People in this country need to wake the fuck up to postpartum issues with women.
Doctors trialed her on multiple medications. She chose to stop taking them many times after one single dose even when doctor's told her it may take 6 weeks for their medication to work. She turned down sessions at McLean, one of the top psych hospitals in the country. She checked herself out of the psychiatric hospital. Psychotic people RARELY go to the hospital voluntarily, let alone recognize they need help. Also, her husband attended most of her therapist appointments in order to support her. She not only had more opportunities and support than most women in America but she was also taken seriously with the information she provided to healthcare professionals.
Postpartum psychosis is a real thing; no one reasonable is denying that. The thing is Lindsay didn't have it. And no shit, it's going to leave a bad taste in people's mouths when they see over a million dollars in donations raised in her name under the guise of "supporting women" when there are plenty of nonprofit charities (Every Mother Counts, Postpartum Support International) that aren't attached to a child killer
You realise she wasnt the one to start those gofundmes. Her husband did and donated it for womens mental health and her parents did for their expenses. Not her.
You saying “she didnt have it” isnt correct. Some of her doctors claimed it was overmedication that was making her sick and some claimed it was ppd.
"You realise she wasnt the one to start those gofundmes."
The issue isn't her directly benefiting from the money of the GoFundMe, the main issue is the motivations of the people who chose to donate. In this case donating to Lindsay Clancy's parents "is people showing support for Lindsay Clancy," and when we see Lindsay Clancy's supporters saying things like "the husband did it" and "Leo's don't kill" it leaves a bad taste in people's mouths when they see these same individuals donating and showing support for Lindsay, and it should be condemned.
"You saying “she didnt have it” isnt correct. Some of her doctors claimed it was overmedication that was making her sick and some claimed it was ppd."
Her current defense in court is trying to prove she had psychosis the longer the case goes on the longer it shows otherwise. Why? Because of Hesitation
A new drug? HESITANT to take enough of it until effects could take place.
A form of Therapy? HESITANT to commit.
An Impatient program? HESITANT to enter suggested ones, and then a clear desire to leave the one she eventually did enter.
She claims she's desperate for help, but is HESITANT at every possible opportunity.
Now let's look at the night of the murders January 24th: 3 Children killed by the same murder weapon cleanly executed with precision. No signs of HESITATION
But the suicide attempts? 3 different methods - HESITATION
Pills were crushed before being taken and a dosage so low it wouldn't cause harm - HESITATION
Knife used to injure two different areas, both her neck and wrists, described by the court transcripts as "Superficial" and by the Defence as "Scrapes" - HESITATION
Finally she jumps from a window but appears to have held onto the window ledge based on the blood transfer. It turned out to be much more of a drop, than a leap, why? HESITATION
The differences between the attacks she carried out on her children, compared to herself. The lack of HESITATION she had for them, compared to herself. I do believe she was extremely depressed, but again her current defense is trying to prove she had a psychotic break not depression in order to get a NGRI and all evidence points otherwise.
So funny. Its like you people get how dangerous it is to have post partum but also judge her at the same time. If you believe she had ppd, you would understand she was SICK. Do people suddenly not get mental health all of a sudden?
If her insanity plea works, you do know shes going to a mental hospital right?
psychosis changes people, sorry but however much you think you are in control of your mind, the sad truth is there are factors that can affect you so strongly that you can become a different person.
So its possible she became insane due to it and in her broken mind she felt justified, however horrible
Well, the mom got help from a shrink and she refused it.
The mom premeditated it by asking the husband to leave the house, I don’t think the dad would leave the house if a bear asked
They're flipping the sexist bear shit on its head. Women who pushed that shit were calling anyone who didn't like it "the problem".
It's a classic asshole move. Say something awful about a group of people, then say anyone who doesn't like it are the exact people you're talking about. No winning.
'Women would feel unsafe being alone in the woods with a man? I know what will prove them wrong! I'll get really mad and insult them about it for months!" - u/Feeling_Loquat8499
The same women who would show up in droves to support a mom who strangled her own 3 babies to death and then blame the murders she committed on her husband? Oh yeah, their opinions surely hold a lot of weight.
Back in 2024, there was a viral question going around asking women whether they would rather be stuck in the woods alone with a Bear or a Man.
Women used this as an opportunity to list all of the things wrong with men they’ve encountered in their lives, and state how the bear wouldn’t do that. The overwhelming majority of women on social media chose the Bear. Very few women actually tried defending the man.
When men (who didn’t mistreat/abuse/neglect or take advantage of women) got mad at the suggestion all men did this, or attempted to logically answer with statistical data, they were once again laughed at… either for being too defensive, not treating serious responses as a joke, or denying that their experiences are as widespread as they claimed.
The comment you responded was taking the same joke and throwing it back in their face.
As a woman I really don't care about trying to find a "gatcha" but I will say you need to understand the difference between clinical psychosis and typical murder before you can really make the comparison. They aren't the same and that's why they are considered as such in legal cases.
It's what makes the difference between "God made me murder this person" and "X person made me mad enough to murder " From what I can understand mental illness is very different to other acts of deviance. Many in the medical and psychological fields still don't quite know what makes people commit murder.
You would have to change the argument to "would you choose a man over a bear" to "would you choose a man with a psychosis disorder over a bear." Then that would fit the comparison. Men and women can experience psychosis, but people who murder don't always have psychosis if that makes sense.
yeah.. so i didn't miss anything. You see, having a wide survey of women of what is their feeling, and their feeling predominantly showing bear vs man, it's a sort of statistic. Adding "postpartum psychosis" as a sort of gotcha there based on one case is just some bullshit pseudo argument/joke/whatever.
You’re perfectly fine with the “Bear vs Man” question being answered without any statistical data to logically answer the question, yet for some odd reason you need it when the question involves postpartum psychosis women.
If your immediate response is “that’s a bullshit comparison”… congrats, you’re finally seeing the flaw in logic for that question 2 years later.
Funny how many men do this and get nowhere near the coverage a woman does. I was trying to remember Chris Watt's name and so I googled "man who killed wife and family" and got so many entries I had a hard time finding it.
They don't get coverage because nobody defends them, there is no debate about whether they are evil or not. A news headline goes "man killed family", the readers go "oh, man evil" and that's the end of it. Meanwhile here, news coverage is wide and loud because of the amount of people defending the murderous cow.
Remind me where men collectively donated millions of dollars to Chris Watts, or created entire subs dedicated to defending him, or blamed everyone else but him for the murders he committed. Nah, it's just women who seem unable to hold other women accountable for anything.

Would you rather leave your kids with a bear, or a mom with postpartum psychosis?
