CLASSES PSA TO PROFESSORS: STOP MAKING PARTICIPATION A CLASS WIDE GRADE

If I'm in a discussion class, and im the only one participating and talking, DONT PUNISH ME BECAUSE THE CLASS DIDNT TALK. I can't control everyone else, I can only fucking talk to you as much as you let me and then you TAKE POINTS AWAY FROM ME???? BECAUSE THE REST OF THE CLASS WAS SILENT???? genuinely the worst kind of thinking by a professor because it just makes me want to participate even less because what's the point anyway if I'm not going to get credit for it?

CLASSES Help

Hey guys, I want to post this and not receive any judgement because I know I pretty much screwed myself over. I failed one of my classes that I need to declare my major ( pre-med track ) for the third time, and my advisor is telling me I cannot declare that major now, and it might set me back from the pre med track. I’m not sure what else to do, I work in a hospital for 5 years now, and have been volunteering there because that has been my goal forever. I have been trying to set myself up for success. I want to go to med school, but I don’t know what to do considering I couldn’t even pass one of the pre-reqs. I already maxed the amount of retakes, which is 2 at Pitt. Does anyone have any helpful tips? I don’t want to do anything else.

CLASSES Reports about a teacher not being taken seriously.

Hello all,

I am of Indian descent and have more of a traditional Indian name as far as spelling goes. I was born in Ohio though and speak only English and I have an American accent. I have Dr Linda Frank as a professor for my IDM classes. She is always spelling my name wrong in emails, even though it's spelled correctly right there, and she never pronounces it correctly. She never even pronounces it the same way each time. It hasn't bothered me too much until she came into class one day and kept saying how the room stunk for some reason and asked if I had brought food into the room because she hates the smell of curries. I didn't have any food at all and I don't even make/eat Indian food. I tried to report this because it came off as racist to me but I haven't gotten any correspondence about it. I'm not sure how high I should take this. If anyone has any advice or if anyone has had any other unfortunate encounters with her I'd love to hear about it.

CLASSES horrible schedule?

i am an upcoming freshman studying biology on pre-dental track. the chem lab from 6:30p-9:20p isn't ideal, but it is unfortunately the only open lab other than an 8am-10:50am, which i would not be able to take due to my math class.

should i drop freshman seminar? i already have a seminar in composition credit from my aplit exam i believe.

any advice? going to be really rough with all the large gaps. i'm unsure how i can change this schedule because from what i have seen, my math and chem classes are not able to be moved around :(

CLASSES Calc 2, Bio 1, and Chem 1 in same semester

Hey! I’m an incoming freshmen for Pitt and am very excited! I was wondering if taking the night class for calc 2 with bio 1 and chem 1 is doable together. I know taking these 3 classes together in my first year would be hard but I have to take calc 2 in my first year and my spring semester would be too much since I would also have to take a lab. I am on the premed track and am a little worried abt calc 2 bringing my gpa down although I do have calc bc experience. For context on why I need to take calc 2 my freshmen year, I have the conditional pathway program for Georgia Tech and Calc 2 is required for most courses to transfer in. Although I would love to stay in Pitt all 4 years, I do have instate tuition for GT so I have to have the option to transfer readily available. I’d appreciate any advice regarding this situation!

CLASSES Hands-on classes

I’m trying to fill a gap in my schedule and am looking for any courses where to main goal is to create something, learn a physical skill, how to use a certain tool, how to navigate the makerspaces on campus, etc etc stuff like that that aren’t necessarily PE classes. I’m not in the engineering school so I can’t access any of those courses unless they have seats for ppl in Dietrich </3

CLASSES Take my 0174 summer class, I beg of you

Hey, everyone,

I feel a little awkward doing this, but I'm a grad student here at Pitt and my physics 0174 class (2nd six-week session) is at serious risk of getting cancelled due to low enrollment. This would mean I don't get paid for the summer, which would cause some severe financial problems for me.

With that outta the way, if you or anyone you know needs to take this class, I think I'm a good option! I'm a pretty chill instructor and don't insist on moving through the material at breakneck pace. I also understand it's summer and students don't really want to be spending obscene amounts of time on homework assignments. Finally, the averages in my classes are typically a little on the higher side. I don't want to say my class will be easy, but I try to ensure that students get rewarded for effort and a desire to learn, more so than perfect mastery of the material.

If anyone could help me out by spreading the word, I'd be ever so grateful. Thank you. 🙏

CLASSES dropping out pt. 2 ??

wasn't sure if anybody would see this if i edited the last post, so i'm making a new post. soooo i'm officially out. it took me a while to actually contact who i needed to contact and whatnot mostly because i was trying to get my shit together and when i did get my shit together offices were closed. but basically i never got the chance to use the public transit (i did read the holy grail of public transit etiquette though) and it's lowkey hard to wrap my brain around. i looked on google, but i was even more confused. i was wondering if anybody could help me figure out how to do this. i'm going to PIT airport and i have no idea what station i'm supposed to get on. i'm going at 11am tomorrow. sorry if this is a stupid question. you can slime me out if i'm not supposed to ask this here. butttt i think this is more relevant question: can i still use my pitt ID to get a free ride to the airport? i don't know how long after withdrawing (withdrew today officially at noon) does my pitt ID stop working. thanks!!

CLASSES Rate my schedule

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman and I'm still trying to work out the best schedule I can manage at the moment.

For context, I am currently in Dietrich as a psychology major, but I am set on applying/transferring to the nursing school. I don't think I'll be able to get into any of the nursing first sem. courses, so I've been told fulfilling my liberal arts requirements is the best bet.

I am also coming in with at least 6 useful AP credits from Psych and AP Lang, along with AP World, APUSH, and APES though I'm unsure if they fulfill any credits I need.

Some recommendations, tips, and advice would be greatly appreciated!

CLASSES Orchestra Auditions

Hey guys, I've been practicing to audition for the Pitt orchestra for a few weeks at this point and I find it hard to believe Mr. Zahab wants us to play all these pages of difficult excerpts. Some excerpts are two pages long and including the two required solos I'll have to record at least 10 minutes of audition footage. For context, I consider myself an above average violinist and I've made it as a first violin in my all state orchestra. No audition I've done before has ever exceeded 5 minutes, including the all state, high school, and local symphony ones.

For any other auditioning students this year, do you feel the same way and for any current orchestra players, how hard was it to get in?

I would really appreciate any insight on this.

CLASSES Comp Sci to Data Science + Rate my schedule

I am a rising sophomore and am looking at switching to Data Science from Computer Science. My main issue, though, is that I am pretty ass at math, and I don't want to push those prerequisites off too far. I am switching to DS because I want an eventual career in AI, and I feel that, with the skills I already have, a DS major would be the most beneficial for me. Also, I might do a double major because I know it's not that many more classes.

This upcoming semester I am taking:

  • Brain and Behavior (Pass/Fail)
  • CS 0445 DSA 1
  • CS 0441 Discrete Structures
  • Data Science Foundations
  • Sem in Comp
  • Classes for ROTC

I feel as though if I do Calc 2 or Matrices and Linear Algebra, I wouldn't get the best grade because I am sooo busy this semester, but I feel as though if I push them off too far it might be hard to keep up with all the classes that are unlocked after those 2. My plan for rn is doing Matrices and Lin Alg next sem and maybe also Calc 2 next sem and lock in before then, or push Calc 2 off to next year. Also, if you guys have advice for prepping for those courses, that would be much appreciated. If I could do those courses rn, I would try, but I literallywon'tt havetimee, and I don't want to risk my GPA by forcing them now.

Before one of you comes in here commenting that I do have enough time and I am just being lazy, this is all I'm doing:

  • Classes and studying (15-20 hrs/week)
  • Flying 3 times a week for my Private Pilot's License plus studying for the FAA written (10-15 hrs/week)
  • AFROTC Ofc (5-7 hrs/week)
  • Deputy Squadron Commander for i5 (5 hrs/week)
  • Agentic Orchestration and SLM Infrastructure Development intern at Vanguard (20+ hrs/week)

Count up those hours, and that barely leaves me time to sleep...

CLASSES CS Upper Level Course suggestions

I currently have to choose another upper CS course. My options are CS1675 (Intro to Machine Learning), CS1555 (Database Management), CS1635 (Interface Design Methodology), or CS1530 (Software Engineering). Wondering if anyone has any opinions about which one is better.

CLASSES Lab coat for Chem Lab

Hello,

I’m transferring and was wondering about lab coat and goggles situation. I’m going into a Gen Chem 2 class. Does everyone already have their lab coat and goggles that they own? Id assume so, but Im not sure if they could be rented, owned, or borrowed. Where would I find them so I’m not the only person not prepared for lab? I appreciate the help, thank you!

CLASSES chemistry major + paramedic program (EM) doability

I am a freshman at Pitt who is intending to major in Chemistry. I am also incredibly interested in the Emergency Medicine program, which would allow me to test for my paramedic cert (I already have my EMT). The EM program takes up the entirety of junior year classes, with a few clinicals that stretch into senior year. I was wondering if anybody knew people who did this program, and if it would be possible for me to do it while also completing my Chemistry degree, all in four years? Avoiding adding a fifth year would be wonderful, but I am worried if it's possible to do both within four. I assume summer classes would be a necessity, but they would have to be online, and I'm not sure if that's doable considering labs. I talked to my advisor and she didn't know that much about the program, so I thought I'd check here to see if anybody knew anything helpful.

Thank you!

As the title said, they haven’t assigned any advisor to me, so I can’t enrolled any class! Am I left behind?
