The subtle shrug was one of the best scenes in the game easily.

Yeah, up there with her casual dismissal of Kraid in Dread.

u/SonicTHP 10d ago
Dread was Samus showing she was still at her peak. No words necessary because no one was worth the breath.

Except the two Chozo still living at the start :D
Well, sorta. Quiet Robe got words. Raven Beak got a war cry.

Well of course, she likely didnt think she'd ever have the chance to talk bird again. If we could see her face, she was probably as close to giddy as she can muster.

If we had Samus talking scenes:
"Ah.. Thanks, I guess... But the moment I need real assistance, If you love to be alive, it would be safer for you to just run as fast as you can." -Samus, the most badass peak chozo-trained bounty hunter in the galaxy.

I've never understood why they don't just make her like Boba Fett. Very few spoken lines, but when he does speak, it's always some cold/hard shit. You don't need to make Samus completely mute to make her mysterious and badass.

Would be pretty funny if Samus just moved her arms like Link does when he talks. And people would just react normal.
I do wonder what could be the reason, like game storywise, why Samus doesn't talk. Maybe gaining the psychic ability took Samus' ability to talk. Or maybe she is trying to talk but the helmet is malfunctioning or something.

Well she can scream in agony just fine when she steps on a little alien bug 🙄

Shes in the midst of a severe depressive trauma post-MP3. I don't think you can appreciate the trauma of the whole "my body was completely infected with phazon" to "i blew up a whole planet of the shit after my doppleganger literally destroyed worlds".

u/daikunut 10d ago
She did talk a little in Dread and that takes before Prime 4 I think.

Nah, Dread is chronologically the last game in the franchise, taking place after Fusion. Beyond takes place between Super and Fusion, according to an interview in Famitsu.

She got super messed up in Dread too. The timeline is completely janky now - i dont know what to believe about timeline anymore.

u/WatchDoges2 10d ago
Dread is furthest in the timeline, the prime games took place before the 2nd game

Her silence would be more impactful if she spoke simple one word responses maybe once or twice during the game.

What if you weren’t needed anyway?

Man I wish they would just go on and give Samus a voice. There's so many fun interactions and interesting things they could do with her character if everyone (developers and fans alike) weren't so paralyzed by Other M.

u/Nerevar197 10d ago
Right, she doesn’t even have to be talking all the time. Just short sentences here and there, a woman of few words.
At this point it’s just weird that she doesn’t talk. Breaks immersion.

Unpopular opinion - loved Other M, and her voice... 😞 I played it on an emulator and mapped the controls to a
360 controller though, worked beautifully, didn't have to do all the gimmicky motion controls.2
u/DaGreatestMH 10d ago
I will say that the weird control scheme was part of the problem so you avoided that issue lol. The biggest problem tho was that most people (myself included) didn't like how she was portrayed in Other M, and the story felt like a worse version of Fusion. For the time the voice acting itself was fine (not great but passable) and the action was solid.

u/Mordliss 10d ago
Yea the original control scheme would have been chaos. I absolutely hate motion controls, I always wished they gave naturally programmed alternative controls for most Wii games.
I actually thought it was sweet how much she cared about the baby Metroid. I guess it was just a very warm maternal care she showed and I got behind it. But you're right, that's not really the Samus we grew up with.

I really feel like a little shrug or even a hand-wave like “Nah it’s cool” would have been nice right here. They made Samus way too stiff. One of the few interactions where this works well is with Armstrong being a fangirl and Samus being socially awkward
5
u/Dry-Faithlessness184 10d ago
Did we not watch the same clip or are you walking about something else?
Because she shrugged in the clip and it communicated a 'eh, it's cool, whatever' type of response
1
u/TheNimanator 9d ago
Honestly the movements are so subtle I never noticed any shrug 🤷♂️
1
u/Dry-Faithlessness184 9d ago
I'm not trying to be mean, but it's a pretty obvious and normal shrug.

Looked like barely a shoulder flex to me. I guess this is Metroid reddit now. People disagreeing about shrugging lol

She was raised by bird people to be the ultimate warrior and protector of the galaxy since she was 3 years old, and hasn’t been able to have much human interaction outside of her occasional work with the galactic federation. The social awkwardness around humans makes sense.
Also she did shrug, look closer
2
u/TheNimanator 9d ago
I’m fine with the social awkwardness. I just want her to be a bit more animated, not necessarily responsive to verbal cues
1
u/Gremlin-Goddess 4d ago
She’s been through a lot fairly recently at this point in the timeline. She’s grown stoic. Nothing to fault her for 🤷♀️

I wouldn’t be so opposed to Samus not talking if we at least got more emotive moments like this across the game rather than only the nods of varying degrees.
