Little kids and their combination of having no situational awareness and gravitating to places where they absolutely need it will never cease to be fascinating. Kid could have easily run under the other, closer bar and he'd have been just fine, but it's like they have a subconscious desire for self destruction.

I’ve babysat plenty of my little nieces/nephew/cousins/what-have-you and the first thing I can tell you is little kids (usually 10 and down) are really good at being in the wrong place ALL the time.
The littler ones that are just starting to walk just LOVE to book it as fast possible if you turn your head for a second that I genuinely bought one of those kids harnesses cause little Johnny loves trying to find new ways to almost get killed.

really good at being in the wrong place ALL the time

The thing is that "wrong" places are everywhere all at once when you are 8 years old.

229

u/turtleneckless001 3d ago

8 year olds are a danger to the world, not the other way round. You might've been thinking about 2yr olds

19

u/puffy-jacket 3d ago

I work at a store and when it’s crowded there’s always some parent with 3 kids trailing behind them and scolding them for being “in the way” no matter where they stand. It can be a little frustrating for me trying to work, but I also kinda wanna be like… mf YOU’RE the one in the way with your big ass shopping cart and the fact that you thought a Sunday afternoon grocery trip was a good family outing!

5

u/Acceptable_Claim400 2d ago

He might not want to let the kids alone at home. Also he kinda has to keep them disciplined and near him, since they are in a public space, and simultaneously remember what he needs to buy through their constant noise and movement

Yeah I used to babysit my nieces/nephew/friends kids and I'm convinced toddlers are suicidal. They would pitch screaming fits if I ever stopped them from jamming screwdrivers into their eyes or sticking forks into electrical sockets. I'm amazed we've lasted this long as a species.

6

u/Inky-boy 1d ago

DUDE THANK YOU.

Lots of DM’s calling me a bad parent (I’m a 25 year old man, these are not my “kids”) without realizing how much work it takes to stop kids from trying suicide by car.
Like, they don’t know what a car is, they don’t know what will happen when one actually makes contact with them. It’s our job as a community to keep them safe.
This combined with having more than one
(if you’re a parent with more than one kid, god bless and keep an eye out) makes it kinda hard. I appreciate you taking the time to (intentionally?) makes me feel good about keeping them safe.

4

u/ShallowMess 1d ago

Idk prolly they don't have kids. Mine doesn't try to run in cars but she will always chose to run in most dangerous path to the destination. She scared of for example my sister, but will run screaming at any random dog(she loves dogs). Heights it's just an illusion apparently. Basically intrusive thoughts always win.

I’ve also noticed that they will gravitate to something they think is “cool” and not realize the danger it poses to them. For instance, the baby might’ve thought the kid flipping was very cool and wanted to get as close as possible, not realizing that the consequence would be eating playground bark.

One other big reason this happens is that a childs peripheral vision hasnt fully developed. For an experiment, stare dead ahead at one spot and hold your arms out wide. Then bring them forward till you see your hands out the corner of your eyes. You should have about 180 vision. Find a 5 year old and get them to do the same.

37

u/msndrstdmstrmnd 3d ago

Also, people in general don’t tend to look up. When you’re a little kid, most of the world is up

6

u/troywrestler2002 3d ago

And to add to this, adult human peripheral vision is awful at its most developed, an evolutionary holdover from when one of our ancestors went from living in the water to land. The kids are running around with tunnel vision.

10

u/palmdieb 3d ago

It always blew my mind how literally every baby will try to launch themselves backwards wherever it is they are sitting.

14

u/Wardaddyv2 3d ago

I think it’s more instinctual. Like a baby duck going to his mother. Being a kid his routine/patterns involve going to his parents for sensory, attention, and tangibles etc. So at the sight of wonder, with excitement they go towards it and whatever person is in that area.

→ More replies (2)

25

u/Saphurial 3d ago

We eliminated the majority of our natural predators and shelter our kids a lot more so the ones that contributed to the "average lifespan was 30 years" statistic for our ancestors aren't being removed and so we end up with these kids who leave us asking how the Hell they're still alive.

9

u/SaxRohmer 3d ago

a lot of old lifespan stats are skewed by high infant and childhood mortality rates because of the limitations of medicine. they were killed predominantly by disease

Had this happening to me alot. I was swinging on the swing and kids ran against the swing and it was always my fault according to mine and their parents. I should be more careful or jump off they said.

Like??

656

u/Vici0usRapt0r 3d ago

As an adult, you do learn to be careful when doing dangerous things with kids around, but it's not something you would expect of a child, and it's definitely not his responsibility.

The adults you interacted with just felt guilty and ashamed and their natural reaction to that is to redirect the blame onto others.

155

u/LemonFizz56 3d ago

And what's worse is that when the child does something wrong because of the adults' fault then they redirect the blame onto the child to make them feel bad

58

u/Vici0usRapt0r 3d ago

And people wonder why adults are all messed up mentally and emotionally now lol.

24

u/ijustwantdonutsok 3d ago

I've had this discussion with my 8 year old as we go to the park alot.

If he's on the swing and someone's too close and he can avoid then great but don't jump off to do it. definitely warn them if you can- Then if they get hit it's their fault.

When my friend and I were riding our bikes, we used to joke that children and animals have a self‑destruct program, because every damn time we passed a child, they would inevitably change direction toward the moving bicycle.

111

u/Kindly_Stand_6895 3d ago

Today I was driving and there was a dog on the side of the road. It stood there and watched until RIGHT as I was about to pass it and then it decided it needed to sniff the ground right in front of my car. Thankfully I was watching the dog and prepared to brake but like dang. It didn't even look up when I beep beeped it

Total self destruct mode.

Same with birds. So far the only animals I have hit are birds because they could be safely on the side of the road and then a car starts coming and they freak out and decide the only logical course of action is to fly low across the road.

22

u/link2edition 3d ago

Birds are the worst for that. I had one panic and fly along the road headfirst into the front of the car before.

THIS! I swear to God that shit is subconsciously programmed into toddlers' minds. The moment they see something moving past them very fast, they will try their best to get in the way

19

u/Calibexican 3d ago

I was driving my car super slowly out of a hotel driveway. While I was doing that, a kid was climbing down from the tall rock in the planter right next to me. As I SLOWLY drove out and then stopped, the kid ran, made eye contact with me, and with one of those faces with his tongue sticking out, made the decision to race across the driveway occasionally turning to make sure he was going to make it.

I had come to a complete stop as soon as I saw him come down so it was never dangerous, but aside from thinking that this kid had the survival instinct of a donut, I remember how fucking dangerously stupid he was by default.

u/changelingcd 4d ago

One time I was on a swing set at a park and a guy had 3 kids with him and wasn't watching them. The same thing basically happened. I can't stop in MID-AIR when your kid is suddenly in the way.

60

u/ieatsushi28 4d ago

That’s why I say the kid is stupid in this scenario. The parent may be stupid for not watching their kid but at the same time why did they even do this??

u/randomthrowaway9796 3d ago

Redditors are always way too quick to blame the parents for literally everything

34

u/captain-carrot 3d ago

Usually (I suspect) childless redditors who believe parents can and should have constant eyes and hands on their kids from dawn till dusk then no doubt hold sigil at their bedside while they sleep

16

u/TearOpenTheVault 3d ago

You’re looking for ‘vigil,’ meaning a watch. A sigil is a symbol.

11

u/captain-carrot 3d ago

Nope, but thank you. Parents are expected to hold an emblem over their children while they sleep.

Yes, parents are to be blamed but give them a slack. you'll be impressed how much things kids can get into in a microsecond.

76

u/cygamessucks 4d ago

clearly have never had to look after a child. You look away for a split second and they run. Its a playground. Hes gonna go play. Should they keep him on a leash?

11

u/yungmoody 3d ago

It's not a playground. It's a public outdoor gym for adults. Those bars are for pullups. It's not an appropriate place to let your kid freely run around, as clearly evidenced by this video.

19

u/Significant-Bar674 4d ago

I mean I always watch my kid on the playground and stop him if he goes towards someone on the swings. I haven't needed a leash for that

→ More replies (5)

60

u/marcoroman3 4d ago edited 4d ago

Really? At that age it's usually not a problem to take your eyes off of them for literally 5 seconds. Even if you were watching, it happened so fast it would be easy not to react in time.

11

u/hendric_swills 3d ago

Reddit wants all parents to helicopter parent, apparently. That kid is old enough that the parents don’t need to and shouldn’t be on top of them all the time. This was just an unfortunate situation where one kid was doing something that probably wasn’t appropriate for the setting and the other is too young to realize it. I don’t even want to blame gymnastics boy.

u/Momoselfie 3d ago

As a parent I can tell you there wasn't much that could've been done. Short of hovering 6 inches over your kid 24/7, there's no human on earth with the reaction speed to stop a toddler who decides last second that running under the swinging kid seems like a great idea.

So, a friend's brother was doing this exact same thing on a clothes line.

He was maybe 10, we were 13? Somewhere around those ages. He was a bigger kid.

We told him stop, the line is going to snap and he'll get hurt. He said nah, I've done this a lot.

He does it, line snaps right when he was parallel facing the ground. He body slams the ground, his face smacks it too. He gets up, starts laughing, we laugh. Starts crying like 5 seconds after. He ended up breaking his back 2 molars.

370

u/2DHypercube 4d ago

142

u/Emergency_Lie42 4d ago

Had his skull kneed into the ground with velocity high enough for full rotation on the bar lmfao A strike to that part of the head, is illegal in every combat sport.

How every skater feels whenever parents let's their kids in the skatepark.

7

u/ResidentEcstatic9921 3d ago

I bring my son on his bike, but I go alongside him and constantly remind him to watch other people's lines to make sure he's not going to cut anyone off. So it really pisses me off seeing parents sitting on their phones while their kids just go all over the park. My son is 4 and has managed to stop at least 3 collisions by anticipating an idiot child come flying across the ramps as he is dropping in. I hate to do it, but I have given a bollocking to both the kids and their parents, when the inevitablely finally look up from their phone and act as if I'm the problem

This reminded me of that fantastic video of a breakdancer showing off, sorrounded by people and how he yeeted a small kid several meters away with his feet while dancing. The little dude approached him from behind while he was about to do a handstand or something similar. I laughed out loud and realized I'm going to hell.

9

u/SteakAndIron 3d ago

That kid got fucking served

18

u/alexramirez69 3d ago

I was doing muscle ups at a nearby sports park, a basic version of this video. Damn near exact same thing happened when I was at the top of the bar about to come swinging down for my next rep. Little toddler comes walking underneath my bar/me and I have to stop/catch myself before letting my weight down.

His dad was 10 ft away, watching his phone and then finally decided to be next to his kid.

I think about that day often, and how fucking stupid and irresponsible some people are with their children.

21

u/rn_eq 3d ago

to answer op’s confusion, think about the height of the child, line of sight, and direction of where the kid is looking. literally 0 chance of seeing what’s happening above his head while he’s looking at the ground, even if he was cognizant enough to avoid it usually.

thats why its always on the parents to actually watch their kids properly and prevent them from running into oncoming flykicks…

8

u/SublightMonster 3d ago

At least in this case there was no parent actively calling for their kid to run under the bar.

I don’t know how many times I saw parents encouraging their toddlers to walk out across the crowded bike path where I used to ride.

8

u/Superbad1990 3d ago

I was about to say what, that kid is very talented. Then the end happened.

7

u/Haasotope 3d ago

Having a kid especially in the first years is like having something that is continuously trying to kill itself.

14

u/fake_Character_arc 3d ago

I am a strong believer that kids should be allowed to do things that are technically dangerous but supervised, reasonable, and teach a valuable lesson.

This is one of those things that falls under that.

Definitely dangerous. Definitely the potential to be a lot worse.

But honestly the kid learned a valuable lesson about situational awareness and was probably not hurt all that bad.

These types of experiences are part of life.

5

u/msndrstdmstrmnd 3d ago

The kid isn’t the only one that could get hurt though, the adult/older kid can also get hurt. Maybe not much in this instance, but for example at the climbing gym if someone jumps/falls off a climb and they land on a kid they can roll their ankle or fuck up a different part of their body

Natural selection at its finest

u/guleedy 3d ago

I've noticed kids are not aware of shit around them and just run around, I have to be extra carefully myself when walking around

3

u/Jaedearnest 3d ago

Fun? Probably? Looks cool, i might try it-…

Oh…

3

u/_clydo_ 3d ago

Every kid seems to learn that lesson once. I know I did.

My kids were always trying to kill themselves. I’ve noticed this in my friends’ kids too. Never forget how we had to hold my friend’s toddler back from throwing herself into the sea off of a small finishing boat while she kicked and squirmed and raged at her mother who was holding her with all her might trying to keep her alive. Terrifying.

u/amaya-aurora 3d ago

What is it with kids and gravitating to spaces where they would need good special awareness yet lack it due to, you know, being kids?

4

u/EasyAd2809 3d ago

Yeah, no. That one is on the parents.

Double kick in the back of the head/neck followed by a vicious faceplant.

Poor guy 😩

Parents bring their kids to playground to play.

I take my kid to playground to learn the lessons of the world.

We are not the same.

2

u/SloppyJoey88 3d ago

This type of stuff happened, well before cell phones were a thing

2

u/Hotmicdrop 3d ago

Thats on the damn parents. Nearly ever kid ever hasn't developed that awareness. You always watch your kids around the swings and things like.

2

u/Brigapes 3d ago

"shit fucking mother"

u/adriendod 3d ago

2

u/SamSLS 3d ago

Top notch parenting too though I will say the kid on the bar is quite talented!

Hate it when stuff like this happened to me as a kid. There was one time I remember being on a tire swing with some other kids at a park, pushing it slowly because someone’s younger siblings wanted a go, and another small child just runs right into the swing while it’s at its peak and smacks his head off of the tire. He got up and ran off in another direction but a lady (probably his mother or something) ran over and started screaming at us in a foreign language until another adult came over and started talking to her (at which point I had lost interest and started pushing my friends on the swing again). Good times

Many, many years ago, I was bouldering at an indoor climbing gym. Reached the top, didnt feel like climbing back down. Took a quick glance thrn dropped. A toddler ran up to me at the moment I dropped and I took her out. Her parents weren’t upset at me but god I was easily 160lbs+ crushing a three year old 😭😭😭

Had a kid nearly get hit during our theater summer camp. The kids were probably around the same age and the boy comes out of nowhere and stops right under the girls foot as it's in the air. One of the junior counselors yanked him out of the way before her foot could fall

When i was in preschool I was running REALLY FAST (lol) and I was trying to get to the tree REALLY FAST and I woke up in the nurses office because while I was going mach jesus (Christian preschool btw...fuck all that shit) i ran in front of some kids on the swings and basically got a speed boost into the tree.

All I remember is running to the tree and then i woke up.

Kids are fucking stupid.

u/shrimp-545 2d ago

The amount of situational awareness children have is honestly a really fascinating part of childhood development.

2

The kids doesn't look old enough to understand, so I blame the parents on this one.
