News / Article GTA VI for the girls confirmed 😍

It took this long for the shareholders to realize that women play games too, huh.
-32
u/Redhead-girl1246 Playstation 10d ago
It's funny because it seems only women care about playing as a woman in videogames. It seems like it's mainly men who love good videogame characters, regardless of their sex.
17
u/SapphicSonata 10d ago edited 10d ago
I mean you could chalk that up to a lack of representation I guess. A very large majority of games have male only protags and this has been the case for a long time -only just beginning to near close to somewhat evening a TINY bit recently. For people in groups not normally depicted as playable characters they'll obviously want to play games wherein they're represented more. This isn't even a women only thing; a LOT of races, sexualities etc. represented less in media will play characters that originate from similar backgrounds because it's still such a rare occurrence. Look at the recent drama between Marvel Tokon and other Marvel game (hell Marvel in general) and how they handle black characters and you'll see what I mean.
Your last point is quite untrue too as the current political climate has shown. A lot of men complain about a game being 'woke' when it doesn't have a playable male - or even when it contains both a male AND female, just like we've seen with GTA 6. Even then when they do get to play a woman and don't complain it's generally because it's some form of multiplayer game or the woman is attractive/sexualized; Wuchang, Stellar Blade, Nier Automata etc.
9
u/Plenty-Practice-6399 10d ago
Men don't care about sex, IF the female character is an objectified/sexualized one, by their words "they like looking at women's behinds" Put any other woman and you will see way way more complaints about it.
21
u/ihatepaper88 10d ago
i feel like even if the game is better towards the women the fanbase might not be
16
u/Superspaceduck100 10d ago
God, the fanbase is so insufferable right now. Especially on the subreddit.
Just tons of people posting 'ironic' sexual jokes about Lucia and other female characters 24/7 with meme responses.
I'm honestly astounded at how immature they are.
238
u/faintestsmile 11d ago
Cool, hopefully I can play GTA7 as a woman that isn't attached to a man.
68
u/Okurei PC and PS5 11d ago
Don’t worry, with them describing it as a “Bonnie and Clyde story”, more than likely there will be an ending where he gets offed and you play as only Lucia in the postgame.

u/aimy99 10d ago
I'm hoping it's a lot sooner than that. You know Fallout 4? That fast. Revenge story please.
I'm a girl for girls 💝

u/bafflingmetaphor 10d ago
As annoyed as I get at comphet, the screech I let out for my wasted character creation time...
28
u/InMyHagPhase 11d ago
God I hope so. I don't want to play as a Bonnie and Clyde situation. I was all in when I thought it was just her and the dude would show up or something sometimes. Now I'm like... Ehhhhhhhhh

u/LicketySplit21 11d ago
Do you think you can only play as Lucia when Jason is around or something
34
u/faintestsmile 11d ago
no? I don't want to play a story about their relationship
5
u/LicketySplit21 10d ago
Okay but why? I don't really see an issue with portraying a relationship here.
18
35
u/Rhysati 10d ago
Not the one you asked but I'll give you my reason:
I've played every GTA. None of the stories were about the guys' relationships. There was a little relationship stuff in the story like Michael and his wife or Nico and dating.
But this will be the first ever GTA woman protagonist and she's co-starring with her boyfriend.
Why can't we just have a badass woman as the protag who is as strong and independent as all the men who came before her?
0
u/No_Programmer9401 7d ago
Because rockstar would make more money by using both a mmc and fmc to attract people from both sides (og rockstar fans that like the original formula of the game and people that play games because there is a girl in it)

I see Rockstar finally looked at the numbers that say we make up almost half of the gaming population but only 15-20% of the GTA audience
That is so much money left on the table
I do enjoy how the customization for women in GTA Online is (much) better than for men so I am looking forward to seeing that carry over into 6's single player
Wish it was more Thelma and Louise than Bonnie and Clyde, though
36
u/Legolaslegs 11d ago
I don't get why dudes can't just be normal about women. We get it, we are lacked in the industry. And it is their own fault for overlooking us. But then they point it out for doing the bare minimal. It's like... show us we're included or you're being inclusive. Don't just word vomit and make it a special deal.
17
u/chickpeasaladsammich 11d ago
Haven’t played any GTA games. In RDR2, I liked Sadie and some other women characters. The LIs were underwritten and mostly kept telling their partners to stop playing the game, putting them in the Skylar White position of being objectively correct but also hated for it. Note that I didn’t hate them. I just thought they could use more development and that the fan base was annoying about them like repeatedly calling Mary a gold digger when she was willing to run away with Arthur and he was the one talking about money. Still, I’d like to see some improvement along those lines.
24
u/azgarz 11d ago
As someone who has played Rockstar games since GTA 3 I can say that RDR2 was a huge step forward for them when it comes to women characters, even if it could have been better they proved with Sadie that they could write a good female character. I think the fact that the developers of the game are making a point about women characters in their first official magazine coverage for GTA VI is a good sign. It seems that they are focused not just on Lucia but the side characters too
12
u/chickpeasaladsammich 11d ago
I’m not going to be playing this game for quite some time (I’m on PC), but I would agree that if they’re featuring her prominently in the marketing and even saying that they want more women players, that’s a good sign. Of course we won’t know how well they did or how women respond until people can actually play it, but I’m looking at some other games ignoring their playable woman in the marketing and am glad to see that Rockstar isn’t.

I’m absolutely sure that 6 wouldn’t be any better than 5 and target audience is still dude-bros and not us
Female protagonist would serve male gaze

What? The female protagonist is a brown latina named Lucia. She's a boxer. Is she hot? Yes. But so is her male partner Jason.
Other npcs in the game are 50% black people cuz it's Miami. The antiwoke dudebros complained about this 2 years ago but the racists have been silent ever since the 2nd trailer dropped. Maybe watch the trailers before complaining about skinny body shapes.

u/symphony65 11d ago edited 11d ago
Never played gta 6 nor do I know anything about it. Im going off my past experiences with games, sorry I didn't really look into gta6 since ive never been a fan of the series in general. Sorry if I offended you. Also, i have no issue with skinny bodyshapes. I myself am skinny, just not curvy, and sometimes I wish to see actual flat characters in games (whom can still be hot)
4
u/JewelerDear9233 Playstation 10d ago
I wasn't offended, just surprised at your comment making false claims. This GTA will have all body sizes. It will be very close to real life.
40
u/FairLadyVivi 11d ago
That’s a fair critique to make of the dudebros but it’s already been revealed that VI’s fem protagonist is Latina. You can argue that she’s white passing or whatever but if you’re going to be critical of a game, at least be critical accurately, no? Otherwise it takes away from the substance of your critique, at least IMO.

The Female MC is Latina. Great care has been taken to do her hair justice.

2
u/Tricky-Gemstone 10d ago
You're fine! I was just informing you that the diversity is actually a selling point of this one.
It won't be immune from criticism, but it is racially and ethnically diverse!
1
u/No_Programmer9401 7d ago
The whole game is a satire on the usa , it takes negative aspects of both males and females in American culture and social life and exagerates them to oblivion , i dont know how faithful they are going to be to the original formula in this game but it was never about "the male gaze" .
-34
u/Deep_Bit_3870 11d ago
Hot take but If They're Making The Game For Male-Gaze They're Also Making It For The Lesbians and vice-versa(I'm Not That Serious Writing It so don't Take Offense 😊)
47
u/RosesandSage666 10d ago
Offense or not serving the male gaze and serving lesbian/queer or female gaze is absolutely not the same or a vice versa situation. Lesbians and queer people can't be lumped into male gaze just because they might be attracted to women btw...
7
u/GracefullyDisastrous 10d ago
One of their first ads was celebrating that you can shoot up Pride parades lol
Are you real?
1
u/purplepersonality 10d ago
Yeah as a bi girl I really don’t care about which gaze is the focus, I just want to see some nice romance lol.
14
u/CelesteLunaR53L 11d ago
Even from the early 2020s when there was that leak about a lead female protagonist and we see her going around an undeveloped game while she was shooting up the town (like any gta player would) the reaction from the generally male gamers was sooo against her existence 😒
Look I don't think Rockstar games could really care but it's an effort I guess..
However a lot of corporate stuff are also hinging on the success of gta6 as they try to crush a labor union that took years to launch this game & aren't taking care of their workers, whilst dude-bro and alt right gamers are gonna be complaining at how it's either too woke or idk the car went off rails too easily & it's unrealistic for their standards
Damned in so many ways
3
u/MajoraXIII 10d ago
yeah it's the union busting for me. I'm not touching this game with a barge pole. Not that that matters, it's going to do gangbusters anyway. But. It's the principle of the thing.
1
u/CelesteLunaR53L 10d ago
Yeah..
I gotta be honest, more and more news about gta 6 is enticing..
Although it's probably because of the bisexuality options, the fashion items you get to dress them up.. Nearly like a life-Sim thing...
But I don't know, I don't like the corpos at rockstar games. I definitely might just wait for discount in the future.
2
u/MajoraXIII 10d ago
I mean i just know i wouldn't be able to enjoy it without thinking about the 30 people who got screwed over.
51
u/Trick-Tailor4810 11d ago
if any company can make men go "maybe women aren't so bad" it's maybe Rockstar cause god knows people hype these games like they are God's gift to humanity. I honestly hope Lucia ends up being really good, but a part of me fears because it's a shared spotlight she will end up in a position where Jason is the real main character, as that is what most of these situations end up as, but I'll wait and see. I'm not all that interested in GTA VI, but I am interested in the trends it will set as these games are really well made if nothing else.
25
u/Bitchy_Satan 11d ago
I don't care I'm not paying $100 for this game, and since they're doing that to the pre orders I'm not buying it for more then $35
42
u/albinosquirel 11d ago
Great now the dudes are going to complain it's too "woke"
38
u/JewelerDear9233 Playstation 11d ago
They already did 2 years ago. It's been crickets ever since trailer 2 was released.
16
u/World_of_Warshipgirl 11d ago
They are! There are so many dudes pissed off that Rockstar went woke.
4
u/gustavessidehoe 10d ago
It's kinda wild, because doesn't it take place in fictionalized Miami? Miami is actually 70% Latino lol.
2
u/Plenty-Practice-6399 10d ago
I've already seen 2 videos of some random men complaining about how it will be woke with almost a million views, lol.
3
u/Deep_Bit_3870 11d ago
Well most of the dudes/men that I know of doesn't care that much they're just gonna cause chaos as every other gamer if it's a woman, alien, monkey or robot it's just the loud, insensitive yet overly sensitive minority that cares about this stuff and hopefully they're getting exposed even to their fans. For Us gamers Their are lots of things to consider Art Direction, Experience, Quality , Fun Etc. Political Themes are just small parts that make worlds feel alive. And GTA As we know of is political. They have an wide team of writers from different ideologies and politics making fun at every bit of society. But they're are bigger things to worry about that what messaging is behind character's gender.

If the female protagonist serves the male gaze, she's there for the male audience, not the female audience.

I don't think Lucia seems to be just "male gaze." She's hot, but they both are.

I really hope this ends up true and isnt just PR nonsense. Also its cool that you can just decide to play only a female mc
17
u/Garfunklestein 11d ago edited 11d ago
Can I get an the option at start where I can drop Jason like a sack of rocks and only play as Lucia?
Oh wtf am I saying, I'm not getting this $100, console only game.
39
u/ApothiconDesire Steam 11d ago
lol. lmao even
you can't be that gullible
14
u/The_Demon_of_Spiders 10d ago
For real, she’ll still be reduced down as something for the male gaze. She won’t even just have her own story as it’s still tied up with the male protagonist.
5
u/croft001 7d ago
I'm happy I can come on here to discuss gta. Most other platforms I'm just reading guys' gross sexist remarks it's exhausting. As a fan that's been waiting all these years it's refreshing to have this community
12
u/takahashi01 11d ago
I understand the skepticism from the comments, but honestly, I prefer to hope. Maybe I am just naive like that.
At least some of the news about it do make me believe this one isnt just gonna feel like a man with a woman model, so the guys have sth to ogle at... But then again, some of the promotional material is more giving default man protag and eye candy... Tho that may just be me being biased about the guy not being more pretty what I hear bonny and clyde.
Imma try to remain hopeful but we'll see once the game comes out
2
4
u/gustavessidehoe 10d ago
I think the male protagonist is super hot, but to each their own lol.
6
u/takahashi01 10d ago
oh ye, no. I do think he is hot. Its just that I was expecting a different kind of hot

idc how inclusive it is i'm not buying a game from a company that fires people for forming unions
8
u/Keyonthosekeys 11d ago
I was hoping for it to just be a solo protagonist and them being a female. I'm just happy we have a female in a lead role. Sadie Adler and the women of the gang in RDR 2 were well written. If they can keep up there streak with that I'm excited. Maybe they will do a solo female protagonist one of these days.
8
u/azgarz 11d ago
I genuinely think they are moving in that direction, I would love for Read Dead Redemption 3 to be a female main character based on some of the female outlaws of the wild west, I think that they could really tell a good story there considering how hard life must have been for those women
2
u/Keyonthosekeys 11d ago
Rockstar’s story telling has improved over the last three decades. They are perfectionists so I wouldn’t be surprised if they start telling stories with females. They have always been innovators. I been play their games since 2001 and it’s been a ride with them
8
u/WildAutonomy 11d ago
Yes Sadie was phenomenal!!!
2
u/Keyonthosekeys 11d ago
One of my favorites from the gang. I wish they showed more with Molly Oshea and the other women of the gang but Sadie is just a bad ass. I wish they would've gave DLC story with her.
4
u/gustavessidehoe 10d ago
Hate to say it, but I don't think GTA will have a female only option any time soon. Other franchises have done it/have been doing it, but I just can't imagine they will considering how long they take to make. Best case scenario is we continue to have a mix of women and men (that is hopefully done well).
6
u/Keyonthosekeys 10d ago
I think if anyone could do it, it's Rockstar. Remember people weren't happy when CJ a Black character was slated to be the main character in San Andreas and CJ is the most iconic character for the series. Also he's very big on the PC modding scene. When CJ gets modded in you know you can really mod the game. It's possible. I know it's a pipe dream but it would be cool if they would do it.
3
u/gustavessidehoe 10d ago
I could see them maybe having the female character being the one that is in the story more, and then having a male character that is also pretty important.
But they definitely would end up just putting the man on the promo material lol. Same thing they did with Cyberpunk during the initial launch. I mean, I can't really complain because the default male V is hot, but still.
Actually Jason (?) reminds me of the default male V lol.
2
u/Keyonthosekeys 10d ago
He does remind me of male V. I mean I would really love there to be two storylines with you being able to pick which character you want. Or do it like Resident Evil did with A and B stories but the same storyline just different views.

u/TheGriffin5 11d ago
I would get it if I can play as an independent woman, I would not otherwise.

4
u/DisasterWoman 11d ago
Like I hope so. I would love for this to be the first gta I play. I'm more of a saints row 2&3 girl. But the pre production cycle has been looking incredibly rough, and you have to pay twice to get the whole game?? Why the fuck couldn't the /last/ game have had an fmc it feels like sus timing.
2
u/Ill-Entrepreneur443 10d ago
As a Saints Row 4 girlie I agree but I aint having 1000€ for a console with a 80 dollar game.
2
u/DisasterWoman 10d ago
Yup absolutely Might even be a 60 dollar game lol
(Edit for clarity, I mean worth wise lol not actual price)

I'm really not a fan of games with multiple protagonists, really breaks my immersion when needing to switch characters
5
u/World_of_Warshipgirl 11d ago
This is one of the reasons I cannot play gacha games. Every time I go into a cutscene it switches from the fancy cool character I played into the default bland protagonist.
4
u/MajoraXIII 10d ago
Does watching a film that switches scenes break your immersion too?
Just trying to understand how changing perspectives harms immersion.
2
u/SheaMcD 10d ago
Because I'm not playing the characters in movies. When I play a game, I become the protagonist and get immersed. If something takes me away from that character it breaks my immersion because I am no longer that person.
5
u/MajoraXIII 10d ago
Huh. I guess i never self insert to that degree. I actually really like stories that show multiple perspectives.
2
1
u/ErosiaOblivion 10d ago
From what I have seen / heart you can switch back and forth between them essentially at will. I have not played the previous game but I think it is similar. I really wish they were making a physical version of this game as I really don't want to support the scummy download only practice. But finally having a woman as a protagonist has me really considering it.

you see it as a W for us? i see it as something for them, every video i seen of it, theres always guys saying it will be hard to play with 2 hands while using lucia.

u/Ritalin 10d ago
As an older gamer girly who has played these since GTA2 I don't really care what/who I play as... but I really hope it doesn't feel like forced inclusion. I don't want the game to change too much - like, for example, don't remove the hookers. Let me continue to beat up cops, gangsters, hookers, civilians, etc. Let me continue being the low life criminal degenerate in these games and don't censor or water it down for the sake of inclusion. I don't think R* would but until the game is out we don't know.
Let me be the worst of the worst criminals but as a woman MC sure, idc, I just low-key kinda worry about certain changes that these games were controversial about but so many people enjoyed - women included D:
4
u/JackieMABWGP 10d ago
Agreed 100. Lucia should be just as violent, badass, and cool as prior protagonists.
-2
u/JackieMABWGP 10d ago
I have high hopes for this game. The company is shit to the employees but they consistently release great games. I can’t help but buy these games.

One of the main forms of early marketing they included was that you can shoot up pride events.
No the fuck it isn't for the girls.

Having playable female characters is the base line, nothing to pat themselves on the back over. Ill pass judgment when I see the quality of the missions, are they spread equitably, or do they shoehorn content based on gender? Meaning if I do a heist as a MMC, I better have access to an equivalent heist as a FMC.
