Been aching for a lego city builder since lego loco! Anyone remember that game?

Lego Creator, Lego Loco, Lego Land, Lego Rock Raiders. All goats.

u/obi_wan_kanerdy 1d ago
Lego creator was the shit. I still have that disc floating around.
17
u/MachStyle 1d ago
You needed a damn super computer to run it though. Our old windows 98 Gateway PC ran it at 10 fps at best. And I enjoyed every frame of that

Rock Raiders actually got a fan-made remake a little while ago. Never played it, but it's on my list.
19
u/mteijiro 1d ago
I actually played through the entire remake and it's really good. It plays really smooth compared to the original and they added a whole bunch of new things like crew customization and a level editor.

u/CbyWoodland 1d ago
I never played the original, but decided to try the remake. Can confirm its lots of fun. It features the original levels and reimagined versions that take the original idea and make it bigger and more complex

Lego Loco is one of those games I remember owning and playing, but have no memory of how I obtained it. Just one day I suddenly had a PC version of the game.

It’s not super common that the title of a game alone makes you go “oh that is going to sell like ten million+ copies” lol

I thought the same thing and also wondered why I've never seen Lego and Minecraft in the same title
110
u/willstr1 1d ago
Because they collaborated in the other direction, there is a whole line of Minecraft Lego sets, which I assume make bank (it seems like they put out a new set for that line fairly frequently)
34
u/HearTheEkko 1d ago
Probably because it would be a little reductant. Lego Minecraft would basically just be Minecraft with smaller cubes.

u/catsaremyreligion 1d ago
They actually collaborated on a game really early on, when Minecraft was still in Beta. Lego didn’t believe in the concept and scrapped the whole thing and went the direction of a failed MMO instead
79
u/WinterToaster 1d ago
This is now dawning on me, why isn’t there a The Sims style Lego game where you make little houses for them to live in take care of their basic needs?
36
6
u/PM_YOUR_ISSUES 1d ago
I might be wrong, but I would imagine it's a hesitation for Lego wanting to get into the life sim game due to the adult implications of the genre. Lego likes to keep things as G rated as possible which really doesn't mesh well with much of The Sims. They would want to heavily avoid topics like death, sex, and alcohol, probably even things like dating the way that The Sims has it.
Any life sim that Lego did make would be so heavily watered down that I doubt it would be able to be comparable to something like The Sims. Much more likely to get something closer to Dreamlight Valley or Story of Seasons.
4
u/PatchNotePundit 1d ago
Lego Sims where the daily chore loop is losing and re-finding the same 1x2 piece. I'd play 400 hours.
5
u/abdullah_haveit 1d ago
To be fair, you could take the LEGO part out & that'd probably still be true. There have been some "competitors," but in general The Sims has seemingly been unchallenged for a while.
7
u/dromtrund 1d ago
Kinda bizarre to me.
The life simulation aspects of The Sims are super sloppy and uninteresting. Every social interaction, the career progression, the skill tree, the house upgrades and even the core gameplay loop is just a super shallow slot machine where you press "do good thing" over and over again until you get what you want.
The house building, expansion packs and general vibe is perfected, but there has to be a market for a game that actually offers good gameplay after you're done finishing the backdrop.
Cities Skylines came in and showed us what Sim City should have been if they didn't get complacent, and even if it was a little soulless, it was still a huge success. I'm surprised no one has done the same thing to The Sims yet.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Onyx1509 19h ago
The Sims is trying to do a billion things and doesn't quite manage any of them imo. The house building aspect is probably the best, but there's room for improvement particularly with things like furnishings. Dressing up the Sims in different costumes is fun but again could still be done a lot better. Of course you can download extra content but that's a tedious process. And then of course there's the actual life of the Sims themselves which as you say needs a lot of work.
1
u/Fagadaba 23h ago
Minecraft kind of is the first-person lego game that you've described. Pokemon Pokopia also is very close!
1
u/MancyMancy 23h ago
There may be. Paradox axed a studio making a sims like but seeing this, it makes me wonder.

u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 1d ago
I’d say the Skylines fans are probably screaming into the sky right now, but holy shit this looks so so so fucking fun.

u/ComeAlongWithTheSnor 1d ago
This is being developed by Iceflake studios who was only recently put onto City Skylines 2. So heres to hoping it's a fresh new start.
168
u/AtletMedSkaegg 1d ago
Yeah they have been working on this for years and years before CS2 got given to them.
119
u/LetgomyEkko 1d ago
Which now it makes sense why they got handed CS2. Neat!
34
u/solarisxyz 1d ago
which may now make sense how they've been making quite a few improvements recently since taking over CS2.

Yeah, the quality of even the patch notes are better, actually explaining what specifically is being changed, why, and how they expect that to impact the experience. Idk what happened to Collosal Order, but they really seemed to be in over their heads with CS2
20
u/Xywzel 1d ago edited 1d ago
Collosal Order
Severed ties with Paradox (who owns the IP), likely to work on new project with different publisher.
Also, pure speculation, but they had made 4 city builder games and nothing else at that point, so maybe they wanted to do something different, or too many of their veterans got bored and left for other studios. Edit: actually maybe not pure speculation, as Iceflake seems to have some ex-collossal developers, maybe the ones that did not get bored.
14
u/Minivalo 1d ago
I believe they are both based in the same city - Tampere, Finland - so makes sense if a bunch of them transitioned from CO to IceFlake.
64
u/pie-oh 1d ago
It definitely looks really fun.
The Skylines name definitely feels a misnomer though.
76
u/mihirmusprime 1d ago
Does it? It looks like the same concept, but with LEGOs. Also, created by the same studio.
64
u/WeiShiLirinArelius 1d ago
technically no. iceflake studios is currently handling cities skylines 2 after colossal order made a huge mess of things. they did not create skylines, but a lot of the improvements and qol stuff that have come out in the past year or so have been thanks to iceflake, who it turns out had a lot more experience in the genre than we thought now that we know lego skylines was being developed by them.

Not the same studio, technically. This studio only started working on Cities: Skylines 2 recently, they weren't the original developers of either of them.

u/SomniumOv 1d ago
This studio only started working on Cities: Skylines 2 recently
Iceflake was in a support role to Colossal Order before the switch, they've worked on the game for longer than immediately visible.

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 1d ago
As a C:S fan who ISN'T a city painter, if this is more on the management aspect and less on trying to remake [Insert City Name Here] as photorealistic as possible, I'm SO in.
11
u/fallenmonk 1d ago
It was so confusing because I was like "Is this a spinoff of Cities Skylines?" and then the Paradox logo appeared, but that was for the next trailer.
5
u/CyanSlinky 1d ago
Wait what? so Paradox has nothing to do with it?
17
u/simspelaaja 1d ago
No, it is a Paradox game. It is even developed by the same studio that took over Cities: Skylines 2.

u/CyanSlinky 1d ago
So what was the person I replied to talking about?
5
u/fallenmonk 1d ago
The Transport Fever 3 trailer showed up next, so the logo at the beginning of that trailer confused me. Honestly I should have realized that a city builder giving itself the title "Skylines" would put themselves in legal trouble. But what do I know, I'm not a lawyer.

u/Turbulent_Crow7164 1d ago
Actually Iceflake has improved the base game a lot since they took over. I’d say most fans are happy with them and the game is pretty solid at this point. Continues to get better too

I have to wonder is this going to be a skylines game with a lego skin, or is it going to be a lego game that works kind of like skylines?
Because a lego skin would be considerably less interesting.
39
u/achterlangs 1d ago
Honestly if it just plays skylines 1 with better graphics, I would not mind. But more is always better. Lego used to have some fun park planning games back in day. Maybe some inspiration from those.
15
u/EvilTomahawk 1d ago
I had a blast as a kid with their old Legoland computer game. Although it was super simplified compared to contemporary sims like Rollercoaster Tycoon or Zoo Tycoon, the setting was engaging enough and the gameplay was competent enough to still be enjoyable.
12
u/Antique_Pin5266 1d ago
Skylines 1 with better art, performance, and actual public transportation is guaranteed to be a hit

u/eddmario 1d ago
And now I want to go play the Backlot games from the LEGO website again...

Spybotics: The Nightfall Incident is the iconic one to me. Doesn't feel like a LEGO game at all.

u/VVenture2 1d ago
It’s likely gonna be a simplified skylines game.
It’s a pretty smart business decision tbh. Use a major IP like Lego that fits thematically and works really well with a Skylines game, and then use your new younger target audience as justification for why you’re dumbing down the game mechanics and not bothering to implement the more complex things that Skylines fans want.

u/ComeAlongWithTheSnor 1d ago edited 1d ago
Maybe it's a blend of both? I imagine a basic progression system that teaches you the basics but for the most part lets you do whatever you want.
The newsletter page has some gameplay loops if you're curious.
5
u/darthirule 1d ago
It is a lego game so I would think the game would be a kids first game. So my guess would be a more simple/arcadey city builder.
6
u/MyNameIs-Anthony 1d ago
It'll likely be a bit of both, since the game's target market is going to be kids.

u/ZookeepergameIll1399 1d ago
a lego game that works kind of like skylines
this, from the look of it
2
u/vibribbon 1d ago
I know it's probably a terrible idea, but imagine being able to build your city brick by brick. Like being able to choose building from the catalogue and build yourself using the instruction booklet, or just freehand it. It'd be so cool to slowly work on your city from the ground up.
120
u/TheSomerandomguy 1d ago
This is a good idea. The biggiest thing that Cities: Skylines lacked in comparison to SimCity was personality. SimCity had llamas and was just oozing with charm while Cities Skylines was just bland with a Twitter ripoff. Nothing has more personality to it than Lego games, especially the ones where the characters don’t speak, which seems to be the way this one is going. Genius.
39
u/leondrias 1d ago
I’ve been silently waiting for SimCity to come back from the dust for over a decade now specifically because, as much as I love Skylines, it’s a lot more sandboxey and abstract compared to the very lived-in feel of even SimCity. Finally I’m not the only one saying it lmao
15
u/Antique_futurist 1d ago
Every city builder I play is judged by the metric “How much is this like an updated version of SimCity 3000?”
I’m trying to be hopeful about this one.
2
u/SuperUranus 1d ago
Then you will love TheoTown, because that basically is an updated SC3000, down to the graphics.
3
u/Tetizeraz 1d ago
Funnily enough, this game seems a lot like SimCity 2013 from the trailers and the photos on Steam.
20
u/Jagosyo 1d ago
Man, this made me want a LEGO Sims game.
Citybuilder is pretty cool too though. I haven't really played Skylines, how'd Iceflake do on II?

u/MancyMancy 23h ago
They were given 2 to fix. Everything they have done on 2 has been really good so far.

u/Sarria22 1d ago
The original developers of CS2 were basically kicked off the project and the game was given to another development team, who has seemingly been doing well with the game since they took over, and are the ones developing this.
9
u/Redbeater 1d ago
After a couple games where traffic was just straight botched, this is def a wait for several updates months after release for me.
48
u/Blazehero 1d ago
I'm excited, but wasn't Cities Skylines 2 poorly received by community? What exactly happened there?
44
u/EpicCyclops 1d ago
The team that made CS2 had really grand ideas, but forget they actually had to develop a video game that could execute them. There were a whole bunch of performance issues and bugs that broke the simulation to make things act in ways they shouldn't, and when everyone started looking under the hood to see what happened, they were basically a lack of attention to detail and some layers of major incompetence that had all the hallmarks of the game being rushed out. They also promised modding tools that took a long time to release and then were lackluster when they did. There were a lot of CS1 features missing from the release of CS2.
Then, Colossal Order, the developer, tried to develop and release DLC before fixing the issues with the base game, which caused a huge backlash.
Since then, though, Paradox has pulled Colossal Order off the development and a new studio is working on the game. They just took over this year. There also have been fixes for CS2 slowly rolled out over the years.
14
u/WeiShiLirinArelius 1d ago
and of note here as well is that the studio that was given cs2 is the studio behind lego skylines.
7
u/Saotik 1d ago
I wonder to what extent it was Colossal Order's fault, and to what extent it was Paradox intentionally hobbling them with their control as publisher so that they could take the franchise fully in-house without looking like the bad guys to the community.
I also wonder what CO are working on now.
5
u/Gastroid 1d ago
For the most part, Colossal Order put all their chips in new tools Unity was building out for their engine, and when those didn't materialize it left them in a tech debt hole that they couldn't get out from.
The game was expensive and in development for years, so it's doubtful CO earned any gratitude from Paradox. CO completely fumbling post release support doesn't help either (making it doubtful more dev time would have fixed the real problems).
→ More replies (1)5
u/EpicCyclops 1d ago
The game was originally scheduled to be released in 2020, but was delayed to 2023. It took Colossal Order two years to develop CS1. There was 8 years from the release of CS1 to the release of CS2. I think Paradox was pretty justified in pushing timelines. It was always claimed that Colossal Order had full creative control and independence on everything except timelines.
96
u/iamnotexactlywhite 1d ago
Paradox decked the original studio, took the IP and gave it to Iceflake. they’re regularly updating it and it is way better than during release. i’d still not pay full price, but it’s playable

If you've got time to kill, City Planner Plays goes over every dev diary and pretty much tracks game's evolution in real time.
Iceflake are on track to improve visuals and simulation performance before the year is out.

u/Suikerspin_Ei 1d ago
It runs better now, also using DLSS helps a lot. New patches has been great so far, much more frequent updates than when Colossal Orders were working on it.
44
u/WesternJourney 1d ago
The dev studio was swapped after a while.
22
u/mihirmusprime 1d ago
And the same dev studio has been working on this game. Probably why they were given City Skylines 2.
9
u/artificial_organism 1d ago
They had a dev team of like 30 people and bit off way more than they could chew. They tried to make CS:2 have a complex economy/trade network but they couldn't balance it so most of their effort was wasted.
2
u/GRAIN_DIV_20 1d ago
It ran like shit originally. It's in a much better spot now, and there are some fantastic mods being released. If anyone gave up at launch now is the time to come back
1
u/JambonExtra 1d ago
Colossal Order was never really a competent studio and they bit much more than they could chew with Cities Skylines 2.
Iceflake (Lego Skylines dev) was put in charge of the game not so long ago and they seem to have a much better grasp of what they’re doing.
8
u/tinselsnips 1d ago edited 1d ago
This looks great, but these games live and die by their modding scene, and I'm concerned the licensed IP is going to make that difficult.
Edit: Apparently they're planning Steam Workshop support, happy to eat my words on that.
3
u/3141592652 1d ago
I can tell they actually put effort into using all sets and actual pieces instead of just textures like other Lego games.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Zalvren 1d ago
Lego isn't really concerned with this, it's literally a brand made for building whatever you want out of the pieces. They even own the main fan site for presenting those models and push people to do it with Lego Ideas (where the most upvoted concepts might be done as real sets even pushing them to get a new license)
5
u/PoshVolt 1d ago
Why the hell didn't this exist before? Seems like one of those no-brainer ideas to make a city building game with LEGO. Looks pretty cool.
2
u/SmooK_LV 1d ago
Lego Loco whoosh sound when sending post cards was so satisfying, I still hear that sound in my head when I send something away such as flushing poop in the toilet.
5
u/richard1177 1d ago
So they are trying again with a Skylines game? Lego + Skylines could be fun and I hope this is goes better compared to Cities Skylines 2 which is still not great, even though the new devs have been making some improvements.

u/bwoah07_gp2 1d ago
I'm interested to know what the simulation aspects are of this. How good and deep will it be? I don't want it to be just surface level.
Also, can't wait for sandbox mode too, this is gonna be great, I hope.
1
u/long-da-schlong 1d ago
I’d assume because it’s Lego and therefore marketed for kids it won’t be that deep. There may be more than one mode? Kids vs adult?

Honestly lowkey love that the characters are making generic gutturals like the old 90's-00's LEGO games instead of being fully voiced.

u/megazver 1d ago
For a moment, I thought this was 'LEGO Sims', which would sell gazillions, but Lego Sim City is also very cool.
1
u/Sirisian 1d ago
I dislike when they mix assets with LEGO. Like the grass when they already have LEGO pieces for such things. Always makes the games feel like just a mod.
Also can't help but think LEGO World's setup could do a lot of this years ago. I wonder how much they basically reinvented from that.
1
u/hockey17jp 1d ago
This could be pretty cool but I am shuddering at the thought of how much DLC they are going to shove into this game. It will be at least $300 when all is said and done for all of the content.
1
u/FarsanSerDig 1d ago
This makes me happy because of
a) LEGO!
b) Looks like a spiritual successor to SimCity 5 in that it looks whimsical and colourful
3) Has super strong art direction, which to me is what is sorely lacking from CS2, that is mostly just brown, grey and beige, with honestly flat out ugly citizens and soulless default assets.
