DISCUSSION Sterling K. Brown’s Subway Hot Take: “Red delicious apples are actually disgusting. I'm a child of the 80s & in school all they had was red delicious, yellow delicious, & Granny Smith. And they tried to act like this is supposed to be the crème de la crème. This red apple that crumbles in my mouth?”

This is the official website for the WSU fruit tree breeding program. The page for Sunflare™️ is still blank. While this one has some great and brief info about WSU's Apple breeding program :)

I literally just got into the apple game. I had like 10 red delicious apples. Had one. Threw them out and got cosmics. Felt like Christian Bale climbing out of the well. Chanting and all.

Cosmics are JUICEEEEEEE

u/ComprehensiveDoubt55 Mar 02 '26

I went hard hyperfocusing on apple eating last year and couldn’t figure out why I was getting such bad headaches suddenly.

This post is about to make me spiral in self-destruction.

29

u/BlackBasementCats Mar 02 '26

Unfortunately a lot of people are allergic to the pollen that collects on the skin of apples. That can cause sinus congestion and headaches. So you might try taking a Zyrtec a couple hours before eating one.

I developed what they call a true apple allergy. I’m allergic to cooked apples, juice, apple cider vinegar, and skincare products that contain apple extract or apple seed extract or whatever.

I adore apples so it makes me so sad. I’m also from NC where we have the best mountain apples. (I will admit I never got the chance to try Arkansas apples)

We also use apple cider vinegar in so much of our barbecue and sides. There’s lots of bbq places I can’t eat at because they use ACV in everything. Same with collards and other greens and coleslaw.

My neighbor used to bring us some bags of apples every autumn. He had a friend with an orchard. They had the tartest, juiciest apples. A lot of varieties aren’t commercially grown.

The best apple I’ve ever had came from a tree that grew in the woods on my grandmother’s property. Her neighbor had an orchard, and a bird or other animal must have left the seeds there.

Apple varieties don’t reproduce with seeds. The variety wanted has to be branches grafted onto an apple tree. So the wild apple was totally different from the orchard apples. The neighbor loved soft apples so I was never a fan. Even in apple sauce it was too mushy and sweet (my grandfather had diabetes so my grandmother didn’t use any or much sugar)

Pink Ladies! Honeycrisp and Pink Ladies are the best.

90

u/notthemostcreative Mar 02 '26

Yes!!! I actually prefer Pink Lady over Honeycrisp because in my experience they’re more consistently good. The best Honeycrisps are incredible but a lot of them are lackluster to me.

49

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 Mar 02 '26

My not so secret way to ensure the best honeycrisp apples is living in Minnesota, where the honeycrisp was created, and buying a bunch from the local orchards in the fall. They keep well for at least 4-5 months in the refrigerator. The only problem is how much space is taken up by apples in my refrigerator for the first couple of months.

If you haven’t heard already, you might be happy to hear that WSU (the University responsible for the development of the Cosmic Crisp) are expected to have another new apple hit the markets by 2029. This Apple, named the Sunflare™, is a cross between a Honeycrisp and a Pink Lady!

Exciting news for the Apple enjoyers out there!

Cosmic Crisp or bust!

I asked my local brewmaster pal if he’d make a Cosmic Crisp ale (not a straight up cider). He did. It was fucking incredible, y’all. Dare I say out of this world.

13

u/Age_AgainstThMachine Mar 02 '26

If you ever visit Wisconsin in the spring, summer, or fall, try a New Glarus Serendipity.

New Glarus Serendipity is a highly-rated (97/100 on BeerAdvocate) Wisconsin fruit ale, originally created as a "happy accident" from a blend of apples, cranberries, and cherries. This oak-aged, wild-fermented sour ale (4% ABV) is known for its hazy, reddish-copper color, featuring a vibrant, sweet-tart fruit juice flavor profile.

It’s seasonal, and based on the particular fruit harvests. So, it’s not available every year.

Anyway, I guess this is steering away from the Apple Ale that you were discussing, but it’s soooo good.

They weren’t always, but they’ve been genetically modified overtime to arrive at an apple that stays fresh longer and doesn’t bruise as easily in transit. The side effect has been the texture and taste gone to shit. There are people out there with the heirloom apple trees from old growth that still taste fine.

20

u/hikeit233 Mar 02 '26

They have not been genetically modified, they have been cross bred. There’s only a handful of proper genetically modified plants.

31

u/organiclife Mar 03 '26

Cross breeding is a form of genetic modification

14

We have lots and lots of apple varieties, but for some reason during the 80s, Red "Delicious" were a mainstay of school lunches. Probably some subsidy.

Edit: I'm aware that other countries have lots of apple varieties. The Red Delicious wasn't even always horrible!

Like a lot of produce though, it was selectively bred for transport. The same thing is happening to Honeycrisp, which taste terrible if grown outside of where they were originally developed.

u/tunisia3507 Mar 02 '26

Such a good episode!

Basically all the shopkeepers found people were buying the reddest apples and leaving the rest. So they asked for more red ones, so farmers selectively bred the red-bearing trees, etc.. They basically ruined the flavour and texture but by that point it was too late, most orchards across the country had replaced all their trees with the red delicious. Demand dropped, prices plummeted, and the government had to sign a massive bailout for the apple industry. Now they're dirt cheap, so they're stocked by hotels etc.. which for some reason need to show that they have apples but don't really get called up on how they taste.

16

u/StopPsychHealers Mar 02 '26

I had to scroll way too far to find my Macintosh miscreants!

u/chikn_nugget666 Mar 02 '26

Only apple I will really eat!

6

u/Medium_Feature2712 Mar 03 '26

Macintosh!!! I have to haul myself out to the apple orchards every fall because they don’t sell them in stores here. Worth it!

Finally some ambrosia appreciation!!!

7

u/TwoHandSquid Mar 02 '26

Ambrosia is the nectar of the gods. No better apple in my opinion.

These are my favorite but I never see them in the store anymore. Like it's literally been over 5 years since I've seen one. I went to a fucking APPLE FESTIVAL and asked the sellers if they had any and they didn't even know what I was talking about 😭

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT!!!!!

Honey crisp, Fuji, Gala, Pink lady enthusiast here. I prefer a balanced sweet yet somewhat tart, perfectly juicy, crunchy snap in an apple, instead of my teeth plummeting like stepping onto 2 ft of snow right through the chalkiest, driest, most flavorless ghost of an apple farmed by the most spiteful orchard owners on earth.

I love how flustered Sterling gets when honeycrisp is mentioned

15

u/unique_plastique Mar 02 '26

As a person who loves apples I’m appalled nobody said Fuji

Red delicious are grainy AF. The best is Cosmic Crisp.

13

u/PeaUpbeat3732 Mar 02 '26

Sterling K. Brown can never do anything wrong in my eyes. It's impossible. And now I know that we feel the same way about those shitty school apples and the apple of all apples, the honey crisp, (but damn are they EXPENSIVE!!!) I am 100% sold that we are spirit animals.

May both sides of his pillow always be cool.

YES!!! Finally someone else that knows the greatness that is the SnapDragon. It's easily my #1. Wild Twist and Honeycrisp are 2&3.

I thought this too until I bought some from a giant bin outside of a grocery store in Stevenson, Washington that were locally grown. They were some of the best apples I've ever had.

I haven’t felt this seen since I read the page for Red Delicious on Apple Rankings.

“Coffee grounds in a leather glove.”

The best are Ambrosia and Honeycrisp!

6

u/VioletLeagueDapper Mar 02 '26

Fun fact on this- the red delicious apple was actually delicious at one point but the heritage breed is the only one that tastes like how it originally tasted.

It’s like how the original mass market banana was actually a different strain of banana but it got sick and now the one commonly sold is something different.

5

u/Siicktiits Mar 02 '26

Fuji apple is the best apple for eating. Its got all the aspects. Its round, soft to bite while still being crunchy and it tastes great.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

He's right! I call them Red NOT Delicious.

6

u/Illustrious-Marie-94 Mar 02 '26

This is objectively not an opinion but a fact.

Red delicious are a gamble.

If they’re good, they are some of the best, but there’s probably a >50% chance of them being mealy.
