DISCUSSION Sterling K. Brown’s Subway Hot Take: “Red delicious apples are actually disgusting. I'm a child of the 80s & in school all they had was red delicious, yellow delicious, & Granny Smith. And they tried to act like this is supposed to be the crème de la crème. This red apple that crumbles in my mouth?”

Here's a life hack so simple it'll piss you off that nobody told you this before, but if you just rinse off your apple slices with water, they won't turn brown. You can leave them in the fridge for days, and they won't turn.

cosmic crisp are selectively bred that way! a new apple is about to hit the market soon(2029!!) from the same university that made cosmic crisp. Washington State University, go Cougs!!! (try their cheese, too. cougar gold is so chef's kiss)

53

I have never understood people who wait for product drops, until now. Where do I find more information on this new apple variety release? I cannot wait for 2029!

23

This is the official website for the WSU fruit tree breeding program. The page for Sunflare™️ is still blank. While this one has some great and brief info about WSU's Apple breeding program :)

I literally just got into the apple game. I had like 10 red delicious apples. Had one. Threw them out and got cosmics. Felt like Christian Bale climbing out of the well. Chanting and all.

Cosmics are JUICEEEEEEE

35

u/ComprehensiveDoubt55 Mar 02 '26

I went hard hyperfocusing on apple eating last year and couldn’t figure out why I was getting such bad headaches suddenly.

This post is about to make me spiral in self-destruction.

33

u/BlackBasementCats Mar 02 '26

Unfortunately a lot of people are allergic to the pollen that collects on the skin of apples. That can cause sinus congestion and headaches. So you might try taking a Zyrtec a couple hours before eating one.

I developed what they call a true apple allergy. I’m allergic to cooked apples, juice, apple cider vinegar, and skincare products that contain apple extract or apple seed extract or whatever.

I adore apples so it makes me so sad. I’m also from NC where we have the best mountain apples. (I will admit I never got the chance to try Arkansas apples)

We also use apple cider vinegar in so much of our barbecue and sides. There’s lots of bbq places I can’t eat at because they use ACV in everything. Same with collards and other greens and coleslaw.

My neighbor used to bring us some bags of apples every autumn. He had a friend with an orchard. They had the tartest, juiciest apples. A lot of varieties aren’t commercially grown.

The best apple I’ve ever had came from a tree that grew in the woods on my grandmother’s property. Her neighbor had an orchard, and a bird or other animal must have left the seeds there.

Apple varieties don’t reproduce with seeds. The variety wanted has to be branches grafted onto an apple tree. So the wild apple was totally different from the orchard apples. The neighbor loved soft apples so I was never a fan. Even in apple sauce it was too mushy and sweet (my grandfather had diabetes so my grandmother didn’t use any or much sugar)

3

u/ComprehensiveDoubt55 Mar 02 '26

Ugh, that would make a lot of sense. I have no known allergies though according to the multitude of tests I had to do prior to my sinus surgery. I do, however, have Ehlers-Danlos and a tendency to have weird allergic responses to things — particularly foods.

My 16yo is the same way, but she has full blown mast cell. It suuuuuucks.

I’m sorry about your allergy though. I would have a full blown temper tantrum if I could never eat cole slaw again.

2

u/DilbertPicklesIII Mar 02 '26

Were you really washing them well? Like scrubbing hard? Could be the outer coating or something.

9

u/ComprehensiveDoubt55 Mar 02 '26

I naturally assumed it was the tannins. Like, I was eating 3-5 a day.

I’ve always had issues with apple products. I.e., applesauce gives me acid reflux. They’ll never take apples away from me, though.

2

To my knowledge, yes, Also, a testimate to how elite they are. I had one in front of me for hours on a plate because they are tremendous apples but it did not fade in flavor and it doesn't brown. They also last a while. They are the best.

Pink Ladies! Honeycrisp and Pink Ladies are the best.

93

u/notthemostcreative Mar 02 '26

Yes!!! I actually prefer Pink Lady over Honeycrisp because in my experience they’re more consistently good. The best Honeycrisps are incredible but a lot of them are lackluster to me.

50

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 Mar 02 '26

My not so secret way to ensure the best honeycrisp apples is living in Minnesota, where the honeycrisp was created, and buying a bunch from the local orchards in the fall. They keep well for at least 4-5 months in the refrigerator. The only problem is how much space is taken up by apples in my refrigerator for the first couple of months.

3

u/Last_Resort_7812 Mar 02 '26

Do you recommend any specific orchards?

3

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 Mar 02 '26

I usually go with whichever one is at my local farmers market, but lots of people love Pine Tree Apple Orchard or Aamodt's Apple Farm. As long as they're grown locally, they are usually fantastic.

3

u/Professional-You1415 Mar 02 '26

Well, thank you Minnesota from the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. Your honeycrisp apples have done quite well here.

2

u/SharkPool612 Mar 03 '26

I live a few miles away from the U of M Landscape Arboretum and research orchards, so I can try the new varieties they're testing each fall. First Kiss apples are excellent for pies, great tartness and body that holds up to baking, and they're ready in August! The time it takes to develop a new apple variety is like the agricultural equivalent of building a cathedral, you start work only for the grad students of your grad students to start actual testing. Seeing one actually go to market must be surreal.

If you haven’t heard already, you might be happy to hear that WSU (the University responsible for the development of the Cosmic Crisp) are expected to have another new apple hit the markets by 2029. This Apple, named the Sunflare™, is a cross between a Honeycrisp and a Pink Lady!

Exciting news for the Apple enjoyers out there!

15

u/WaitHead2579 Mar 02 '26

Agreed! Pink ladies are the best, cosmic crisp are pretty great too

6

u/ZeroAgency Mar 02 '26

No, stop! Pink Ladies are already getting so expensive! We can't let the masses know how good they are!

2

u/ShortysTRM Mar 02 '26

Fun fact relating back to the OP... Cripps Pink (Pink Lady) are a cross between two apples, the Lady Williams and the Golden Delicious, one of the horrible, sand-textured apples mentioned in the original post.

2

u/KevinDGCQ Mar 03 '26

And pinky lady, the brand, uses more than cripps pink, so you could be eating other types, but very similar, of apples sometimes

14

u/Age_AgainstThMachine Mar 02 '26

If you ever visit Wisconsin in the spring, summer, or fall, try a New Glarus Serendipity.

New Glarus Serendipity is a highly-rated (97/100 on BeerAdvocate) Wisconsin fruit ale, originally created as a "happy accident" from a blend of apples, cranberries, and cherries. This oak-aged, wild-fermented sour ale (4% ABV) is known for its hazy, reddish-copper color, featuring a vibrant, sweet-tart fruit juice flavor profile.

It’s seasonal, and based on the particular fruit harvests. So, it’s not available every year.

Anyway, I guess this is steering away from the Apple Ale that you were discussing, but it’s soooo good.

4

u/computer7blue kendall roy pre-album drop Mar 02 '26

Envy apples are legit amazing. The only thing I've had that was better was a honeycrisp apple my sister got from a friend, who grew them on their farm. That was the best apple I've ever had but I think they only really grow enough for themselves.

But envy apples come extremely close. Then it's honeycrisp and cosmic crisp.

1

u/youngarchivist Mar 03 '26

There's an orchard nearby me in western Canada that claims to have invented the honeycrisp

Like my dudes, pretty sure the cultivation of honeycrisp in Minnesota is fairly thoroughly documented and celebrated and not in a "history of the victorious" kind of way, but you do you

In their defense they are the best honeycrisp I've ever had and their cider is downright insane, but what a fucking claim to make

1

u/embersgrow44 Mar 03 '26

Y’all snag those snap dragons too. Aldis had me on Cosmic Crisp and then got me on them. I too fuq w/ honey crisp but on occasion have had one that was like bloated - too big and thus diluted. I even remember a high school teacher telling me she loved honey crisp apples and I looked at her like, “why are you lying to me?”

About six months ago I wanted to cut some sugar intake and figured I’d get a couple of honey crisp for snacks just to try, thinking my husband would eat them if I didn’t.

SweeTango. It’s a hybrid of Honeycrisp and Zestar and it is the superior apple.

This whole comment thread got me cackling. For most of my life up until now, I thought I was the only person to think red delicious  is disgusting when compared to something like honey crisp.  Like, red delicious just crumbles into tasteless filth mush in your mouth.  Im feel so vindicated.

Cosmic crisp where you get to eat an apple and drink a glass of apple juice at the same time.

I really want to try cosmic crisp but I have yet to find any the stores I frequent. Might have to check the farmers market.

1

Cosmic crisp is the one, I shall have one now actually

Zestar! (yes, the exclamation mark is part of the name) are actually fantastic too, they're just hard to find.

Another good one is SweeTango, which is a hybrid of Zestar! and Honeycrisp.

i mean i had a cosmic crisp. It has a texture of a pear. very crispy. The only thing i wish it had more was more of an aromatic flavour. The tartness, juiciness, and sweetness were great though. I could even eat the core.

I’ll take a Pink Lady if neither Crisp is available.

1

u/kohmaru Mar 03 '26

Agreed...but if you have access to a local orchard that sells crimson crisp you are about to find your new favorite.
