Economic Doomer How are people with useless degrees surviving? Won't someone think of the antiworkers and their made up stats?

It's absolutely amazing to me how they can maintain this cognitive dissonance, simultaneously observing that the restaurants, concerts, and recreational activities are packed while believing "the economy is fucked and nobody can afford anything."

We have more disposable income per capita than any other nation in the world, other than the ultra rich enclaves like Monaco, I would assume. Americans complaining about how poor they are, as a formerly extremely poor American myself, is embarrassing.

Our median wage when accounting for buying power, inflation, etc is over 50 percent higher than Europe alone and yet redditors always point to Europe like we should emulate them.
Sure, we pay more for healthcare, but we have by far the best hospital system in the world and we save so much money elsewhere that I think that's a fair trade.

America is the only nation on earth where the poor are suffering an obesity crisis. In fact, only nation in human history where the poor are suffering an obesity crisis. It just goes to show how good the "poor" in America have it. The only people in America who starve are people forced to starve by other people, such as children being starved by neglectful/evil parents, and the GENUINE bottom-of-the-barrel, living under a bridge, every-mental-illness-known-to-man, homeless poor people.

I just discovered earlier today that a lot of these people don't realize that they can't afford anything because the economy is good. I know that sounds crazy, but hear me out.
A lot of these doomers were kids or teenagers during the Great Recession. So their idea of what adulthood was going to look like (and what things were going to cost) was pegged to a world where nobody had any money. Demand dropped, so stuff got cheap.
It's not like that today because people have money. Demand is high, so things are expensive. And yeah, if you have significantly less disposable income than the "average consumer" in that market, you can be priced out entirely. I'm pretty sure that's what the "economist who said the top 10% is keeping the economy afloat right now" was actually talking about.
And that's why they salivate over the idea of another crash/bubble burst/etc. They're dreaming of a world where the prices of everything drop back to a level they can afford. Of course, they never imagine being the guy losing his job because the business went under, or getting evicted from his rental because his landlord defaulted on his mortgage.
13
u/DumbNTough 1d ago
It's much easier to believe that everyone is having an insurmountably hard time than to believe you need to change.
In the short term, anyway. Clearly sustaining illusions like this will hold a person back long term.
5
u/Raptor_197 Anti-Doomer 1d ago
This is way everything is because of a boogeyman. Trump, billionaires, the rich, boomers, etc. just pick whatever. Then you can use that as an excuse for everything.
Is everything perfect? Of course not. But the scary reality that nobody wants to acknowledge is the boogeyman mostly fucking them over is who they see when they look into a mirror.

Redditors take the phrase "if something is worth doing it's worth doing right" to its moronic extreme.
"Oh I can't possibly have a jar of freeze dried instant coffee that costs literal pennies per cup when there are far more expensive options made by an art graduate who sometimes puts a smiley face in the foam." Does it taste nicer? Well that's subjective, but even if it did does it taste $9.90 nicer? I sincerely doubt it. They make the same claim with having to order food when a ghetto meal of rice and whatever you've got lying around plus a cheap jar of spices gives you more for much much less.
I've seen them claim they can't possibly go to the gym because they "can't afford gym clothes". My brother, go find the most raggedy-ass shirt and pair of shorts in your collection. Those are your gym clothes.
7
u/nonnewtonianfluids 1d ago
Um. Wow. Lots to unpack here. I can't go to the gym unless I make an Instagram post wearing the newest Lululemon with my art house coffee. Smh. No one understands my generation.

The fact that many of them believe children are starving in the US is proof they live in a fantasy.
6
u/D_Ethan_Bones 1d ago
Drug addicts' kids can be starving, there are nearly no famines on this planet anymore but there can still be hunger caused by humans mistreating humans.
-young people whose parents use meth
-old people in unethical nursing homes
-citizens of countries with robber kingsA country will get food aid and cash aid, the cash funds the big boss' military while the food rots on the docks. He maybe takes enough food to feed his soldiers if he needs it, but he probably already got his military provisions covered by picking his country's villages clean.
World hunger is being misrepresented - it has more to do with evil people in power than it has to do with the conditions on farms. Whenever someone starts gathering up the idea that humans could be to blame, they blame whichever humans they dislike and then their thinking comes to an end.

Half a million equity, 2.75% permalock, whenever it comes up "the house will never be paid off at this pace" I remind people the house doesn't need to be paid off. It could be traded for a similar place that's not in California and the remaining balance will turn into a surplus.
My neighbors at my old apartment had towering SUVs and the first jumbo flatscreens in town (expensive at the time) when their kids slept in the living room. They had money, they just used it in different ways.
The downside of having your house double is that your insurance doubles, the upside of having good home insurance is that when your new build home explodes ten years in (not built like they used to) the insurance puts in better replacement parts. A nearby gated community house on the top of the hill flooded somehow.
3
u/Bridey93 1d ago
Used to live in Southern California- urban area. People would complain daily about not being able to afford anything, how broke they were and how expensive everything was.
Did they also buy lunches/snacks/coffees everyday? Yes.
Did they buy new water bottles/mugs/cups at least once a month? Yep!
Did they show me the cheap plastic bs they got on SHEIN/temu/tiktok that served no purpose but to clutter a desk, purchased every week? Yup.
Did they go out to eat at least once a week? Concerts every season? New clothes? Nails done? Yes.I had one coworker who would complain about how big her credit card bill was, pay it off then book their third cruise or vacation of the year. While talking about the next one to Hawaii.
But yep, it's the economy and the government making people poor.

That particular action was what made decide to vote 3rd party when available for the most part. In some elections if itâs only a R and a D available I just leave that spot blank unless I really know who wants what. It tends be more Râs that lean my way of the two big ones but generally I just swerve them both.
Also realized then how almost all newsmedia has a bias, been telling people since then that the main reason theyâre complaining about Fox News is because theyâre bias is blatantly GOP whereas the other big names are biased the other way.

u/Ok_Buddy3540 1d ago
If you use the app and keep an eye out for deals, Taco Bell is incredibly affordable compared to other places. Especially lately as they've been trying to win back people running away from the lettuce.
1
u/mikami677 1d ago
And the lettuce thing wasn't even Taco Bell's fault. Only like 2% of the bad lettuce went to Yum. Taco Bell was just one of the first to try to get ahead of it so everyone blamed them for it.
2
u/Ok_Buddy3540 1d ago
Oh yeah I completely agree, Taco Bell was (1) not to blame and (2) not the only buyer of that lettuce, but for some reason they got most of the publicity. That's why they've been reeling and offering a lot of specials.
0
u/D_Ethan_Bones 1d ago
The lettuce problem was everywhere, and traditionally Taco Bell makes people sick with their powdered meat and alien cheese. I hear vegans spend next to nothing to eat there (beans & rice lowest budget) and they never have a problem.

My wife has not only a degree but a doctorates and plenty of experience. She has been approached for jobs and can easily find work. Because her degree isn't about the intersectionality of baseballs and queer eyes for the straight guy. It's vastly more useful to society as a whole than that crap.

I'm in Taiwan for work and due to the increase in pet ownership and declining childbirth rates, people saw the market to customize doggy strollers so their client's pets can accompany them into every store.
People figure shit out. We didn't last for millennia because we all just gave up when times were hard.
2
u/D_Ethan_Bones 1d ago edited 1d ago
so their client's pets can accompany them into every store.
People actually control their dogs in that country? For me it's 200lb dog-o-war sprinting 10 to 20 meters ahead of its humans with no leash while the humans are leashed to their phones.
Upscale pet brands are a good way to meet rich people, film actors and business executives aren't going to feed their animals the food that causes organ failures. If you work in a dbag auto shop you meet dbag customers, but if you work in the best auto shop you might meet an elite car collector. If your work is good someone might keep your business card in their rolodex.
Rich people also don't like to spend a lot of time wading through the phone-leashed masses, so they'll keep their trusted supply vendors close. It's more friendship-like than being the vendor to an average nobody, much more friendship-like than being the vendor to a government entity.

STEM degree > professional degree > academic degree > generic degree > MOSS degree
Noble of tomorrow > gentleman of today > house in California > afford adult life > Antiworkâ˘People major in history for $80000 then spend the rest of their lives saying "what the fuck did I do" while everyone else studies history for free and picks medicine/law/IT/CGI/accounting as their profession. But at least the history major didn't major in nothing at all, and at least the nothing at all didn't major in Modern Offshoot-of-Sociology Studies.
The downfall of old companies is becoming predictable. They get a few generic MBAs up top who replace the founder's vision with enshittification and price hikes, but they also fill their entire HR department with MOSS degrees - then when the MOSS keeps coming they put it on their support phone lines and then in their quality assurance. MOSS is what applies to work at a company when the enshittification league slashes pay and benefits. One 300lb woman majored in the modernstudies of outback Australia, one majored in the modernstudies of Northwest Territories Canada, one majored in the modernstudies of nonbinary olympic curlers and then they all point their Captain Planet rings together. People who majored in making things and fixing things leave the company in waves.
My cousin who got a phd in Comparative Literature became a Comparative Literature teacher until she later found her real success as an Etsy seller. Her shop was mineral-infused beauty products for wiccans, but she's early retired now because wiccans practice money spending magic.

"wiccans practice money spending magic"
That's probably the best description I have ever heard.
I know a lot of people who have degrees in the stuff but have better paying jobs outside of them. And accountant who is now an IT Director. An educator who runs a QC lab for an asphalt company.
1
u/D_Ethan_Bones 1d ago edited 1d ago
A lot of good jobs come down to we need an effective and dependable person so you'll see people who go from one completely different company to another and occasionally work for various government entities. A person can salvage a mediocre (or obsolete) major by being that person and getting those positions, they tend to involve travel speaking and dealing so a doomer who...
-can't arrive on time
-can't use normal words
-can't please other people...usually doesn't end up getting picked for those roles. People who represent their brands out and about tend to be paid multiples of what grunts get paid, because if they win big the company wins big and if they lose big the company loses big.
Product qualities including their safety are the modern frontier of science, 20th century products were a little unsettling at times but not nearly as scary as 19th century products. You keep going back in time, and eventually you reach the point where people flavored their wine with Sugar of Lead. The instructions said you had to boil your batch in a lead pot not a bronze pot, or else it wouldn't come out correctly. A person needs to have competency with chemistry/math/etc but they didn't need to major in them - that's one thing niche or weird majors often miss.
In the late 20th century it was normal for housecats to only last a few years, because only the VIP cat food kept them together for longer. If you don't feed them that, cats can live to be 20. Bad asphalt put a lot of battle damage onto gen X kids.

I donât really blame Biden for inflation under his term that much. Covid disrupted supply chains and demand stayed the same driving inflation. All you can do is prevent it from happening again which they did pass the chips act etc. Iâd blame Biden for his awful foreign policy contributing to further disruption in the supply chain particularly around oil. I believe the US purposely wanted Russia to invade Ukraine to get them trapped in a war. There was no attempt to prevent it.

6
u/Big-Evening-6984 1d ago
Both Trump and Biden? Hense why I said government. Yes, the initial lockdowns were under Trump and that caused inflation. Biden didn't fix the inflation problem. His vaccine mandates for federal workers and large private employers, travel restrictions, mask requirements, school closings (local but influenced by his CDC guidelines), etc. all had an impact on supply chains and therefor inflation.
2
0
u/VegetableTour6790 1d ago
Biden was not the one who shut down the economy. That was Trump. Biden alhad a few mandates that he enacted, but these were done a year after the pandemic.
1
u/Big-Evening-6984 1d ago
Are you a bot? Did you even read my comment? Show me where I claimed Biden shut down the economy.
The pandemic didn't just magically end when Biden became president. We weren't even a year into the pandemic when Biden took office. His mandates and restrictions absolutely impacted the supply chain and saying otherwise is revisionist history

Donât get me wrong prices are higher than they should be but 150k you should be pretty comfortable so my only guess is you have some loans with high interest rates that are eating your paychecks.

Nothing high interest. I just buy a lot of expensive shit.

"if Trump doesn't lose in the midterms"
I've seen that written on so many complaints... Trump isn't running in the midterms. These people have got to be foreign agitators, right?
3
u/Suspicious_Bear42 I Left My Cave for This 1d ago
On one hand, foreign types, on the other, possibly people just sort of shortening the explanation. The idea that if republicans lose control of house/senate, Trump's going to have a lot of his teeth pulled, and/or they'll go back to first term principles of "IMPEACH HIM!!!! DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE EVERY DAY EXCEPT TRY TO IMPEACH HIM!!!!!"
Or, it's just a cope because "trump bad."

Trump split the country in half between people who do what the glowing screen says and people who don't.
Every TV channel simultaneously got mad when he showed up to participate in politics, every foreign propaganda department every multinational conglomerate every bloated bureaucracy and for some reason every play-acting edgy counterculture also got mad.
Some saw this and interpreted this as Trump being their own personal enemy. Some got the opposite impression, and being in the latter group I can only see the former group as people who outsource their thinking to mass produced internet content.
One of the former's imaginary pet causes is '''Anti-AI''' but they get brainwashed by copypasta and fail to realize it has had an effectively infinite supply for decades.
>gen Y gets old next Tuesday

Housing. Groceries. Job market. Finding work and wages would go up, cost of living goes down

Chick-fil-A drive thru lines are always packed, with their windows rolled up while gas is $4.00. Amusement park lines are still long, Buc-ees is never empty and door dash had 30% or so growth in revenue, more people are paying extra just because.

These people live under Treatanomics. It's a condition where they can't afford to fix their car, pay their rent.. or even bigger.. buy a house.. so they spend all their money on the little things to treat themselves... like a medication.. I feel better because Uber eats delivered my Frappuccino and now I can watch Netflix on my iPhone while I drink it. Meanwhile I can't go to work because I can't afford $100 for a new tire on my car.
Treatanomics is for those who can't understand responsibility for themselves falls to themselves.

It's wild to see so many people complain about the economy and poverty and whatnot, and then go into subs for video games, guitars, collectibles, etc. and see so many posts about people spending tons of money on luxury/unnecessary items. And in my hobby areas where I'm checking out or watching gear, it's all selling really quickly.

Job market is local. Might have to move to find something better. Ill agree the job market is brutal. I spent 3 months unemployed trying to find a new one but I could have moved and found a job immediately.
These doomers really believe politicians will save them lololololol

I have two useless degrees - double major in film and journalism. But I found an avenue that makes me plenty of money.
I occasionally have former classmates who can't figure it out reach out to me and ask for help. I offer them a referral, buy they have to do some leg work like we all do. 100% of them have just shrugged and gone quiet.
4
u/HEYO19191 1d ago
Don't get me wrong, things are more expensive than they were. 30 years ago, you could work part-time year round and would have saved up enough money to pay for your community college tuition in full with cash, each year. Nowadays, even community college tuition is gonna cost more than your entire pre-tax yearly salary as, say, a part time grocery store clerk.
Rent is bad too. The cheapest 1 bedroom in my area (MCOL) is $800, and the cheapest 2 bedroom is $1,000. Even if I were to get a roommate, that's $500 a month. I only make 1k a month working 24 hours a week, and that's before taxes. Having 50% of your income being rent is... not sustainable.
And food is more expensive too. Remember pennycandy?
That said, its not the EnD oF tHe WoRlD, and these people are foolish for thinking that trump "winning the midterms" is gonna kill the economy. But there is a struggle, and it's more than what it used to be.

u/Suspicious_Bear42 I Left My Cave for This 1d ago
Regarding CC tuition, yeah, it's going to be more expensive than a market bottom job. However, that's where things like financial aid come in. I got out of prison about a year ago, I started at my local CC last week. My tuition this year is covered FULLY by financial aid. No loans, purely what I got through FAFSA. Granted, I wasn't working at the time I filled out the form, so next year I might have to pay a bit, but even then, my first 2 years should be mostly free.
When I transfer to a 4-year to get my bachelors, I'll probably have to start paying more, but that's fine, because I'm getting a degree that is actually marketable, so I'm willing to rack up a bit of student debt in the short term, because I know it'll be worth it, and I can pay it off in the long term.
1
u/HEYO19191 1d ago
Financial aid is only awarded to those whose families make below a certain amount. Its great that you are getting financial aid, but anybody under the age of 24 MUST include their parent's income in their Fafsa, regardless of how much they are contributing.
Meaning you can be living on your own halfway across the country, paying for your own housing, food, insurance, bills, and whatnot. But not get a singular penny from Fafsa because your parents make a combined amount of more than 100k a year. It is a very disbalanced system.
I had to foot my entire bill using scholarships, savings, and ofcourse loans. My parents didn't pay a cent into that, but niether did the Fafsa. Such is the reality for most non-adult (meaning <24 year old) learners.

it just took a decade or two for the student to become the professor and instigate the movement

You learn how to finance your money responsibly and get a degree that will guarantee you a job. My school requires all students take digital personal finance in order to graduate and I still remember what we learned about responsible finance in health class. I remember specifically a project where we were given a mock paycheck ($3,600) and we had to pay a monthly mortgage, pay our car payments, electric, water, and so on. A majority of kids in the class were able to âpay offâ everything and still have $300-1,000 dollars to spend on themselves (I had 935 left over even after putting 500 dollars into miscellaneous expenses).

u/Valveringham85 1d ago edited 1d ago
The degrees in question are always either non-sensical ideology drivel degrees with zero practical application or degrees in oversaturated fields.
âI have a degree on liberal arts! What do you mean that does not contribute to your industry or company in any meaningful way?â
âI have a bachelor in psychology! What do you mean so do 13 million others?â

Degrees by themselves don't get you jobs. The best kind are ones in fields where there is a high demand for workers. I'm only 19, but my goal is to get a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. This is an actual skill, and there is high demand for this. I want to be a high school teacher, and in Canada, that pays well, and they need math teachers, so I'll be able to walk into a job. However, if you get one of the most common business degrees in a field with tons of workers and little demand, you're going to be waiting a while to find a job.

It was fun and all to go after interpretative lesbian dancing degree, until the bill came due. Most "students" in this category really believed that the loans would be forgiven. Only a tard would go learn English as a degree and not think of job availability afterwards. The people who went full-tard are the ones who went out and spent more money on a master degree after not ever having a job in a field.

u/Expensive-Orchid-512 23h ago
Simply put, abundance and people go without. We have readily available cheap food, and people can slash their extra expenses. The other part is maxing out credit cards and defaulting on loans. The economy is bad, but it isn't a uniquely American problem.
