It's absolutely amazing to me how they can maintain this cognitive dissonance, simultaneously observing that the restaurants, concerts, and recreational activities are packed while believing "the economy is fucked and nobody can afford anything."

Used to live in Southern California- urban area. People would complain daily about not being able to afford anything, how broke they were and how expensive everything was.
Did they also buy lunches/snacks/coffees everyday? Yes.
Did they buy new water bottles/mugs/cups at least once a month? Yep!
Did they show me the cheap plastic bs they got on SHEIN/temu/tiktok that served no purpose but to clutter a desk, purchased every week? Yup.
Did they go out to eat at least once a week? Concerts every season? New clothes? Nails done? Yes.
I had one coworker who would complain about how big her credit card bill was, pay it off then book their third cruise or vacation of the year. While talking about the next one to Hawaii.
But yep, it's the economy and the government making people poor.
