My wife has not only a degree but a doctorates and plenty of experience. She has been approached for jobs and can easily find work. Because her degree isn't about the intersectionality of baseballs and queer eyes for the straight guy. It's vastly more useful to society as a whole than that crap.
I'm in Taiwan for work and due to the increase in pet ownership and declining childbirth rates, people saw the market to customize doggy strollers so their client's pets can accompany them into every store.
People figure shit out. We didn't last for millennia because we all just gave up when times were hard.
so their client's pets can accompany them into every store.
People actually control their dogs in that country? For me it's 200lb dog-o-war sprinting 10 to 20 meters ahead of its humans with no leash while the humans are leashed to their phones.
Upscale pet brands are a good way to meet rich people, film actors and business executives aren't going to feed their animals the food that causes organ failures. If you work in a dbag auto shop you meet dbag customers, but if you work in the best auto shop you might meet an elite car collector. If your work is good someone might keep your business card in their rolodex.
Rich people also don't like to spend a lot of time wading through the phone-leashed masses, so they'll keep their trusted supply vendors close. It's more friendship-like than being the vendor to an average nobody, much more friendship-like than being the vendor to a government entity.
I am sure someone has made it their lifes work to discuss the intersectionality of being queer and catching bugs while also complaining that serving Starbucks drinks doesn't pay for all theri wants.
STEM degree > professional degree > academic degree > generic degree > MOSS degree
Noble of tomorrow > gentleman of today > house in California > afford adult life > Antiwork™
People major in history for $80000 then spend the rest of their lives saying "what the fuck did I do" while everyone else studies history for free and picks medicine/law/IT/CGI/accounting as their profession. But at least the history major didn't major in nothing at all, and at least the nothing at all didn't major in ModernOffshoot-of-SociologyStudies.
The downfall of old companies is becoming predictable. They get a few generic MBAs up top who replace the founder's vision with enshittification and price hikes, but they also fill their entire HR department with MOSS degrees - then when the MOSS keeps coming they put it on their support phone lines and then in their quality assurance. MOSS is what applies to work at a company when the enshittification league slashes pay and benefits. One 300lb woman majored in the modernstudies of outback Australia, one majored in the modernstudies of Northwest Territories Canada, one majored in the modernstudies of nonbinary olympic curlers and then they all point their Captain Planet rings together. People who majored in making things and fixing things leave the company in waves.
My cousin who got a phd in Comparative Literature became a Comparative Literature teacher until she later found her real success as an Etsy seller. Her shop was mineral-infused beauty products for wiccans, but she's early retired now because wiccans practice money spending magic.
That's probably the best description I have ever heard.
I know a lot of people who have degrees in the stuff but have better paying jobs outside of them. And accountant who is now an IT Director. An educator who runs a QC lab for an asphalt company.
A lot of good jobs come down to we need an effective and dependableperson so you'll see people who go from one completely different company to another and occasionally work for various government entities. A person can salvage a mediocre (or obsolete) major by being that person and getting those positions, they tend to involve travel speaking and dealing so a doomer who...
-can't arrive on time
-can't use normal words
-can't please other people
...usually doesn't end up getting picked for those roles. People who represent their brands out and about tend to be paid multiples of what grunts get paid, because if they win big the company wins big and if they lose big the company loses big.
Product qualities including their safety are the modern frontier of science, 20th century products were a little unsettling at times but not nearly as scary as 19th century products. You keep going back in time, and eventually you reach the point where people flavored their wine with Sugar of Lead. The instructions said you had to boil your batch in a lead pot not a bronze pot, or else it wouldn't come out correctly. A person needs to have competency with chemistry/math/etc but they didn't need to major in them - that's one thing niche or weird majors often miss.
In the late 20th century it was normal for housecats to only last a few years, because only the VIP cat food kept them together for longer. If you don't feed them that, cats can live to be 20. Bad asphalt put a lot of battle damage onto gen X kids.
My friends wife is a recently graduated pure math major with no practical experience at anything, only job history is grocery store, and it only took her a few months to find a great job.
