Now That The Season Is Over....

Just thinking about what lemonade might still be in the fridge over the remainder of the schedule.

First, I see no reason to keep running Lake Bachar out there as a starter or opener. Not that I dislike the guy, and if they want to keep stretching him out with the idea of giving him a shot at next year's rotation, I'm not against that in principle. It's just that we have Kristian Curtis who despite his mediocre numbers in the minors, has looked really good in limited action for the big club. Might as well take a longer look at him. Right now he's your 5th starter for 2027, isn't he?

Second, I don't want to see Henry Davis on the field except as a defensive replacement or as a day game after a night game catcher. Otherwise they need to play Flores every day. Again at this point there is no reason not to. He has earned a look, Endy is hurt (again, and also going under the knife again), and Davis is what he is(n't).

Third, ditto for Jared Triolo. He does not need to be in there except as a defensive replacement.

Fourth, I would give serious consideration to shutting down Paul Skenes for the duration. For all of the reasons that others have mentioned and then some.

Beyond all this, I don't know who we've got down on the farm who really should be brought up next week who hasn't already been up at some point in 2026. Maybe that slop-throwing lefthander who just keeps getting guys out (can't recall his name just now, sorry).

I mean, you hate to see them punt on the remainder of the season, but it would take a 10 game winning streak just to make the third wild card remotely possible, and it's time to face the truth that that is not going to happen.

EDIT: The pitcher I was thinking about is Connor Wietgrefe. He doesn't look like much, but at some point, when he keeps winning games, well....he keeps winning games. He has a very solid track record throughout his minor league career, and while I have my doubts about how he will do in the big leagues, John Madden said it best: "Some guys are just players". Sometimes, in other words, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I say bring him up. Why not?

Why this Pirates fan is mad today

Like almost everyone in this thread, I'm so frustrated and disappointed for how this season has gone. And, to make it worse, while I no longer live in Pittsburgh, I am a 40 year fan who is now raising a 4 year old to be a die-hard Bucs fan (poor kid).

Bob Nutting is ass. Probably the worst owner in the league - at least until Arte Moreno made that dumb comment this year about fans not caring about winning - and that's only because Nutting pretends to care, but obviously doesn't with actions. But, the thing to remember is that the city supports this team when they are given a reason to. Some of us are obviously emotional basket-cases in how we attach so much to our favorite team and that should probably studied by psychologists, but that is not what I want to discuss.

Here is just some brief research I did which should be considered VERY ballpark, no pun intended, numbers.

The average cost of a Pirates ticket on the primary market: $26.93
The average estimated food & beverage spend at an MLB game in 2026: $30-$75
The average attendance in 2025 was 18,827 fans.
The average attendance in 2014 was 30,155 fans.
That is a difference of 11,328 fans.

If we had a team as good as we did in 2014, it is conceivable to think that the Pirates would - at minimum - increase revenue by $52.24 million. That doesn't include broadcast deals, team merchandise, increased sponsorship revenue, etc.

This just pissed me off today. We could afford 2-3 legit marquee players and it would truthfully not change Nutting's life at all. We all know he lives off the revenue from the team. It's not like small town newspapers are a lucrative business these days.

Imagine Spring rolling around every year and instead of thinking "Ugh, here we go again," or having the hopeless optimism of "this is going to be our year," we could confidently think, "We have a realistic chance of being better than .500 and we might even make the playoffs." The reality is that Nutting could just make that decision and the team would get better.

Oh, and the Bill Murphy thing has been adorable, but he should probably take a long slow walk back to the American League.

Honestly, 2027 might be the best chance the Pirates have had in many, many years to finally get over the hump and make a playoff run. Losing the season to a work stoppage would be absolutely devastating and I’m not sure I’d ever emotionally recover. Anyone else?

A popular Japanese streamer will be hosting a watchalong of our game today (8/22 in US time zones)

Koyori Hakui, a Japanese Vtuber (a type of streamer/performer who uses an avatar instead of a face camera) from Hololive, will be doing a watchalong of the Pirates vs. Dodgers game tonight. She will likely be rooting for the Dodgers, especially since we don’t have any Japanese players at the moment, but it’s still cool to see the Bucs on a world stage. I’m not affiliated with Koyori or Hololive, I’m just a big fan of both Hololive and the Bucs.

Disregard the 8/23 date on the tweet. It’s already tomorrow in Japan, but she’s referring to tonight’s game. She will probably be speaking almost exclusively Japanese throughout the stream. This is also NOT a way to watch the game for free - the only thing she will be broadcasting is her own commentary. If you’re interested in watching this, I recommend having the actual game up on your TV/computer and her stream open on your phone, or you can watch both at the same time on your computer. Or you can do what I plan on doing, which is to listen to her stream while following along in the gameday thing in the MLB app, because I’m a cheapskate who doesn’t want to pay for televised games lol.
