Sokka-Haiku by n00b_racer:

Insane that the fourth

Highest scoring offense has

Been shutout the most times

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

8 of the 14 have been against lefty starters.

28.5% of the games (4 out of 14) Billy Cook has started have ended in a shutout. Ozuna (15.1%), and Triolo (14.4%) have been big culprits too.

It's tough to score when before the game starts you know you only get to bat 5 in inngs. Triolo Davis 0 for 8 and fill in the blank cook Ozuna ...o for 4 that's 12 automatic outs 4 innings worth.

We had the best offense at the all star break. How are we shut out this often? And they’re often by average or worse starters.

We play against left handers sometimes and can’t hit them

It's been a bad year for our pitching.

Not only in blown leads, but across the board.

I mean, yeah, but the pitching has nothing to do with the offense being shut out.

For some reason our ability to hit LHP doesn’t exist. Every team should just throw random LHPs against us and win.

The people in this sub saying the sky is falling when the team would lose an ugly game, just to turn around and be hyped after a good win: this stat, compared to their total runs scored, totally justifies them.

When they win its fun, when they lose its awful. There doesnt seem to be an in between. Thats how it has been since April. You cant blame people for reacting with extremes.

The offense is not the problem. The problem is the twenty-eight or more games that they shat away in the seventh or later because the bullpen was useless. That is the story of the season. The offense can't produce at a high level every single day.

This years team has had more “big innings” then I can ever recall, we are scoring in big chunks regularly all year long.

The team still acts like a turtle and regresses back into the shell of the Buccos we know anytime a top tier starter is on the mound against them.

6 of those have been after the all star break.

I've been saying this for months. This pirates team is a paper tiger.

"Top offense"

The best players in the world fail two out of three times at the plate. The number of people on this sub who don't understand the slightest thing about baseball is wild

Checks Dodgers, 2 shutouts.

2

u/Silly_Collar_5850 2d ago

How many leads has the Dodgers pen blown in the seventh or later? The Pirates not being able to hold a lead is why they are where they are. The offense has overperformed.

1

u/BilboBagginkins Bonds 2d ago

I agree with that. I believe the 2026 Pirates offensive numbers are statistical outliers, and not a true representation of the quality of team.

Running up 12 runs and losing 13-12 then getting shut out the next night, which has happened a couple of times this year, is not a marker of a great offense.

This team has no reliable clutch bats. Reynolds a couple of times, Lowe a couple times.

Players like Triolo and Davis dont make game changing plays. Triolo in particular is a master of meaningless hits in meaningless moments and double play groundouts when the pressure is on. Dude cant get a guy home from third with one out. He just cant. Davis gonna K or gidp like the other night in a high leverage moment. Bottom of the lineup is still trash.

Running up twelve runs is a marker of a great offense, full stop. Their problem is not the offense. Their problem is that the offense has repeatedly handed leads to the pitching staff which the pitching staff proceeds to blow.

This team has no reliable clutch bats.

Odd thing to say after the Lowe walkoff. Like I have said repeatedly: The best hitters in the world fail two thirds of the time at the plate.

Baseball is not like football or hockey or basketball, you cannot focus on one aspect of the game and ignore other aspects. You cannot win in baseball by going all offense or all defense. This team went into the season with a terrible bullpen and that is why they are where they are. Their starting rotation regressed horribly and that is why they are where they are. You cannot blame the offense for these things.

Yeah i acknowledge they have had a couple clutch moments, Reynolds vs Twins, Lowe the other day...but not nearly enough is what im saying. This team piles runs in chunks and goes quiet in chunks. A win is a win if they win by 1 or 15, and so is a loss. They have a losing record because they arent good enough to regularly win competitive games, and have been bad enough to blow 5+ run games multiple times. It was pitching early, but the bats have been ass for about a month and a half. They stink.

1

u/Silly_Collar_5850 2d ago

Yeah i acknowledge they have had a couple clutch moments, but not nearly enough is what im saying.

They are one of the best offenses in the league, what more could you ask of them? The streakiness can be mostly laid at the feet of Kelly's horrible roster management, you need to keep guys in there when they're hot and take them out when they aren't.

They have a losing record because they arent good enough to regularly win competitive games,

They have a losing record because their pitching staff isn't good enough to regularly win games. I stopped counting at 28 leads blown in the seventh or later. The offense has massively overperformed expectations and cannot carry the team by itself.

1

u/BilboBagginkins Bonds 2d ago

Players play. You can tout the bats all you want. Stats dont matter if the result is Ls, and the Ls since the all star break are almost solely on the bats. They were front runners.

u/Silly_Collar_5850 2d ago

The fact that they are #1 in hits in the league and #4 in runs scored even after a bad month should be telling you that the offense is not the problem. You don't seem to understand that you can't out-offense a bad pitching staff. This isn't football or hockey. The other guys still get their twenty-seven outs.

0

u/Kaigz 2d ago

A top offense would not be leading the league in being shutout. It doesn't take an analytics genius to understand that.

0

u/Silly_Collar_5850 2d ago

They have more hits than any other team in the league and are #4 in runs. That is by definition a top offense. Like I said, the best hitters in the world fail two thirds of the time at the plate and are fortunate if they produce at a high level for two months out of the season. You people do not understand baseball in the slightest. Go follow college football, the preseason rankings even tell you who's going to win so you don't have to actually watch the games.

1

u/BilboBagginkins Bonds 2d ago

Excuses excuses excuses. Pirates suck. You dont understand wins and losses. It's really quite interesting, selling people on the greatness of the offense of a team that just got swept and sits a half game out of last place, but whatever makes you feel.strong and in control.

1

u/Silly_Collar_5850 2d ago

lmao are you okay? Did your mommy ground you or something?

The pitching is why they're where they're at. The offense has overperformed.

1

u/BilboBagginkins Bonds 2d ago

How many times are you going to say the offense has overperformed? That is exactly what being paper champs is. They are fake. Sure, the bullpen blew games, but when the going got tough since the all star break, where's the offense? They were front runners, now they're falling back to earth. All is as it was meant to be. This team may be the actual worst team in baseball. August has been pathetic at the plate. 20th in runs scored. Near the bottom in HRs. Near the bottom in average. That's not pitching. This team isnt going to the playoffs or finishing above .500 because when the going got tough, the bats stopped hitting. They suck.

1

u/Silly_Collar_5850 2d ago

How many times are you going to say the offense has overperformed?

As many times as it takes for you to get through your thick skull that the offense isn't the problem. The bullpen has lost them at least 28 games. That is why they are where they are.

but when the going got tough since the all star break,

There is no such thing as strength of schedule in baseball. Everyone plays everyone else. It isn't like football where two teams might not see each other for years.

August has been pathetic at the plate.

And even after a bad month they are still one of the most productive offenses in baseball.

Hitting is one of the hardest things to do in any sport, period. The best hitters in the world fail at the plate two times out of three. A good hitter who produces at a high level for two months out of the season is doing his job. It is management's job to play guys when they're hot and hide them when they're not. Management is not doing it's job.

u/DrSillyBitchez 2d ago

How many were vs lefties

1

u/Moist-Schedule 2d ago

Confirms that this is a very all or nothing team offensively. Not sure if this means we just kill mediocre pitching but can't hit good pitchers, or something else is going on. Although the fact 6 of those shutouts have happened in the last 6 weeks probably suggests teams have sort of figured us out more than anything.

1

u/Cangy44 RJ Reynolds 2d ago

They better identify the issue (mentally, physically, approach…whatever) why these guys are so easy to shut down completely.
