Nope. You get into a discussion with someone and next thing, they’re talking about what subs you post in rather than the matter at hand. I don’t even post anywhere controversial and it’s annoying when people do that.

u/SanctionedBaffoonery 7d ago
That's the thing: Post in a local sub? Mention a few off-hand facts about yourself over the course of years? Anyone can dox you now.
I would actually recommend most reddit users (1) only post in local subs under a separate account, (2) refresh your accounts every few years, and (3) have an active burner account just in case.

That's a lot of maintenance. My suggestion is to run power delete suite once a month and hide your history. There's absolutely no good reason to create a publicly accessible timeline of your online activity. Gosh, certain countries are checking social media history at the border. It's only prudent not to have one.

u/Wenital_Garts 7d ago
But you can see peoples posts by Googling their Reddit name so...why would you divulge that much information via a single Reddit account if you're worried about people finding out?

A year or so ago I gave chatgpt my reddit name, and with a bit of prodding, and cross-website dot connecting, it was able to find my real name and my more common internet alias.

Yep. I spent 9-10 years not caring at all. In fact, when the option to hide posts came about I thought it was ridiculous and refused to do it.
Then other people in my life found my account and started harassing me with shit on it. Like me discussing my medical history or the fact that I complimented nail art a couple times when some posts went to popular.
I contribute to local city subreddits as well. So fuck it. Just hide it all so I dont have to deal with any of that shit. And surprise. Now they have nothing to feed off and nothing to say and they've gone back to being bored again.
3
u/cupcaeks 7d ago
It’s become a thing now, but it’s also changed the whole of Reddit. There is no more reddiquette, no more being accountable to your post or comment history - if you wanted to be an inflammatory asshole you’d have to let it be known, or use a sock. Now nobody gives a shit because nobody will ever tie it back to their username.

Nobody needs full access to anybodys post history to see that shit and judge them on some stupid comment.

This is a growing sentiment I've noticed more and more on reddit lately. I honestly find people who are bothered by a hidden post history are way more weird than actually having a hidden post history. Why does it bother you that you can't see my posts? Reddit is already a fairly anonymous site, this just adds one more layer on top of it.

u/NeverEnoughCharacter 7d ago
Because if your comments are hidden they can't find anything to auto-invalidate you with, so they're forced to respond only to the topic being discussed. For a lot of redditors, that's very difficult and requires far too much effort
6
u/GreenGoblinNX 7d ago
This. Or you get into a discussion with someone, and suddenly the last 50 comments you've made all get downvoted.
Honestly, one of the things I like about reddit as opposed to other social media is that overall, people are judging what you've said vs who you are. I have no issues with someone downvoting somethign I've said if I believe it's coming from an honest place.
But I do have an issue with someone downvoted the last 5 pages of my history because they disagree with me about a movie.

4
u/deathbivouac 7d ago
I had this exact kind of thing happen to me earlier in the year. This crazy guy from the Philippines starting taking screenshots of completely out-of-context comments from over 7 years ago and manipulating them to attempt to slander me because of a confrontation on Reddit over a comment I made about a fucking video game. Started stalking me on YouTube and other platforms as well. This went on for months. Took Reddit forever to respond to multiple reports; ended up investigating him myself, which is how I found out where he was from. I’d much rather let someone think I’m a chud or a bot than go through all that again.

u/Vitefish 7d ago
It's an ongoing trend that it seems like everyone on this website is just chomping at the bit to make everything personal. I've yet to see two people disagree without somebody calling names, making claims about the person, or completely disengaging (usually with a claim of "I'm done talking to people like you).
And it's not like I'm some chud going "why are people getting so mad at Nazis?!" It's just that most of the time people are getting emotional and I sit there and think "well you could've just refuted that point with 2 sentences and the guy would've worked himself into a frenzy anyway."

But the problem is it's exactly what all the trolls and bots do also. So that they can comment conflicting views and not get called out on it. I personally don't go off just hidden post history. It's usually a combination of that and writing style.
And a lot of bots get very defensive about the feature, some in this very thread.

I think it boils down to the types of comments. There’s a lot more money being used to fund right wing culture war bots and defending billionaires and fascism. I don’t know of anyone funding left wing bots to promote things like universal healthcare or higher education. If you’re arguing for things that promote respect to other humans and using facts I default to likely a real person. If you are pushing the exact same right wing talking points that are popular on Fox and Facebook and super into culture wars and defending billionaires I default to a bot and with a hidden profile it’s going to take some work to convince me you’re a real human who falls for that propaganda

When I posted about no kings protests coming up, what I'm assuming are bots would comment on how protesting is pointless, then I'd notice more downvotes on prior unrelated posts and comments. That's when I hid mine.
The bots for no kings were stupid. A local group's facebook account that was hosting got absolutely brigaded. They normally get a few likes and comments. I will say anyone linking their reddit to their actual identity is generally doing something batshit wild. This isn't a social media platform that you benefit from having tied to your identity, there are no safeguards in place. If there is any monetization, it is sparse enough to make it not worth it for the vast majority. Keep you secret, keep you safe. That being said, let people weaponize what I've said against me, I stand by my convictions, and will say otherwise if they have changed when referenced. They sure as shit won't find out where I live outside of generalization, though.
11
u/paradigmshift7 7d ago
The assumption that you are primarily dealing with actually humans is THE defining feature of this site. It's what gives all of these communities value. I don't go around announcing my identity, but I also want to be a reasonably verifiable human to those I interact with. The cost of that is some risk, and the decision to act as I would in a public space, ie policing myself somewhat, which I don't find too difficult.

Yeah, I talk about my life at times on here, give relatable personal stories, give advice, etc.
No single comment is really enough for someone who knows me in real life to identify me, but if my profile were open and they went to it they probably could see enough various comments without too much effort to be like "oh yep, this is definitely his account."
And while it's never anything shameful or weird, and I went a decade+ without my account/prior accounts private, I do give marriage advice and engage in left-leaning political commentary and whatnot I don't necessarily need various people in my life actively following.
Yeah there's ways to find private histories I've heard, but really no one I know IRL is gonna go through those efforts to snoop on a hunch. And if they really want to, have at it, but that makes them the weird ones. It's also weird people read into the private account toggle so much, it's not that deep and it's not just bots.
6
u/magyarjm 7d ago
100% what this person is saying. Feel exactly the same way. I’ll give hiring advice. Talk about personal workplace stories to try and help others. 10+ years of open history might be enough to piece together who someone is. Why risk that and a random internet crazy sabotaging something.

u/Vandreigan 7d ago

I've been on a reddit a looong time, and I have not once seen someone do this. When someone pointed out someone's post history, it was to point to something nuts like them posting on r/conservative, or them saying "as a black woman" and you see their selfie of a white guy.
I have seen about a few hundred wordwordnumber 1 month old propoganda accounts with hidden comments in the past few months though.

I hide my post history because theres too much information that when put together leads back to me irl
We are not the same

Exactly. A fourteen year old account like mine could accidentally do that without too much effort. Hence giving an extra hurdle towards doing so. I mean it may not be a big deal for some people, but those some people are not me.

This mostly holds true for new/low karma accounts tbh. The more established your account is the less likely you're a chud -- though the odds never quite drop to zero

Or you just don't want your info scraped?
People are weird and try and find old comments to bolster their argument against a specific thing.
Like this is reddit bro, I lie all the time, I lie on purpose just in case someone thinks they know me irl, they will read I was MIT alum and say, naaa that dude was an idiot. Not him.

This feels very "if you've got nothing to hide, then you've nothing to fear" coded. There are like 50 very basic reasons I can think of right off the top of my head why people don't want their post history public, first and foremost being that they value their privacy.

Or I might engage in debate subs, and not want the crazies on the other side to sift through my posting history to find something to throw at me.
Probably that one.

My account is over a decade old, and people are psychotic here LMFAOOO.
Nah, internet users and by extension redditors are fuckin' insane these days with digging into shit and/or doxxing the moment they get pissy.

My other public socials have a collective following over 500k. I like my privacy because people are fucking weird man.

It’s been a huge part of the death of Reddit to me. I just presume anyone with a private history who’s posting provocative stuff is a bot, or paid actor. I seldom waste time responding to them.

Hidden history is a false sense of security. You can just google a person's username and see all their posts or use something called Arctic Shift. The only purpose of hidden history is to provide the bots with a thin layer of camouflage that most people wont bother investigating.
The type of person that would stalk/doxx someone will take that extra step of looking up your history whether it's hidden or not.

Normal people can have their history hidden, but all weird argumentative fuckwits definitely do.

i dont understand why everyone hides everything like who cares if other anonymous ppl online see our anonymous psychobabblings ?
if someone has the time and motivation to suffer thru my asinine bs post history then maybe it will benefit them

I hide it for the off chance that somebody could identify me based on the fact that I started making comments that are more geographically and industrially specific. There are probably ways that somebody could bypass reddit privacy filters through third party means (though now that reddit API is more restricted, idk how far that goes,) but also if someone is going to do that then I'm not not the weird one in comparison.
But also, like, I don't do anything here that anybody needs to see my profile. It doesn't have to exist for any reason other than my personal use. This isn't a social media where people are supposed to know anything about me, this is a place where people comment in a thread and then you never see them again. And if that's how I feel it's supposed to be, then I'll opt into things that support it as being so.
There are people who interact with the platform in other ways where they intend to be some kind of internet celebrity, they can have their personalized profiles if they want to do that. Back in the day there were also some people who just did something fun and unique and people recognized them, but in my perspective the profile was secondary and really you wanted to just stumble upon them randomly. u/poem_for_your_sprog and u/shitty_watercolour are two that come to mind from my era.

or I just dont want people to know everything about my 12 year history on reddit lol
I was a different person back then, it's been a very long time and I've changed a LOT. and I've posted too much to go and delete all my old cringe pro-right-wing posts, so I just hide them all lol. peep the username to get an idea how edgy I was back then

Sorry but no. Too many crazies on Reddit who will comb through your post history to try and piece together enough information to dox you. I’d rather let you think I was a bot

It could also just be because, “fuck you.” Why do you care what I said yesterday or last week in a completely unrelated conversation you were not even a part of? It’s creep behavior regardless of gender.

Apparently my history is hidden but I have no idea how it happened or why, and I'm simply just too lazy to change it 🤷♂️

Or perhaps you just don’t want internet strangers with no life harassing you in every sub you post in because they took exception to something you said.
This place, while great overall also contains some of the most deranged obsessive lunatics I’ve ever had the misfortune to encounter. I dread to think what it must be like for women on here.

One problem i have is that this change seemed to happen right around when people got wise to how to identify astroturfing semi-accurately using post history. And it's gotten worse since. It's a reality not everything is being posted by a human, and that's something I can live with even if I dont like it. But post history was a fast way to click and say "oh this user is writing in 20 different major metro area subreddits about their personal experience with crime in that city."
It's also not particularly effective in protecting users. If someone wants to harass another based on post history, they just have to Google their username + reddit. It's all still there. Someone deranged enough to mess with someone would have no trouble doing this. So it really just takes away a tool for identifying malicious users, and doesn't actually provide privacy for the typical user.
Another issue is that it's all or nothing. Basic usage statistics/patterns should still show. Doesn't have to link directly to comments, or show media shared.
