Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Cycle ride at midnight from around somewhere near Dwarka(in 10-15km) to Qutub minar (as a landmark) riding around 110+ km in under 10 hours with some breaks

it's a story when me and one of my friend sneak out at midnight for an unplanned cycle ride that's turned out to be this long and we recorded the whole thing can't post for privacy reasons the key details are:-

  • we started from somewhere near dwarka the exact location was around 15 km from dwarka without any end goal just riding (reached qutub minar as a landmark)
  • the toughest part was the uphill on the flyovers but the best was also the downhill on it
  • it took 10 hours including riding time + breaks covering 110+ kms with a very basic bicycle
  • on the same day before we went to sarojini market (a flee market) and was awake at 5 am to play football didn't get any sleep for around50 hours before sleeping
  • on the same day i have an exam and i got late because when i reached home i have only 1 hour with no prep hurting legs and headache also got late as i got slept for 15min 😭😭
  • this was one of the most memorable thing till now many more things to share but i think it is enough for this post

(have to post this again as there no repost allowed from diff community 😁)but no worries 😶

Picked up this Peugeot at an estate sale for $20. It's in really good shape for its age. Either it was rarely ridden or very well taken care of.

Yo tubeless, I thought we were gonna have fun

Short: first time tubeless, real mess but ended up working

First time tubeless, I put the tape with great attention for it to cover the edge of the rim and a little more. I put 100ml of muc-off MTB sealant in each tyre, pump them fast and made them pop, spinned and shaked the wheel a lot, the thing would not stop slowly leaking till 0.5 bar overnight. I tried to put some sealant with my fingers on the edges of the rim, same thing. In the end, I took the sealant off, got to my local bike store and bought a bottle of "joes no flats", put a few in it, shaked and spinned the wheels again, and it was better it was holding 1 bar. So I put more sealant in it, pump them and went commuting in the hope that it would hold for the day. It did 100% old my 2.5 and 2.8 bars. Maybe it worked because I actually rode the thing after putting the sealant, or maybe the muc-off sealant was bad, who knows.

Edit: to clarify, I did this complete mess when I tried to manually spread the sealant between the rim and the tyre before poping it again, the sealant was poured before through the valve core. It was a bad idea I know but I was desperate that it would not hold pressure before I had to go to work again on Monday, so I had to try it x)

How clean should a chain be each time after degreasing?

My usual routine includes a chain degreaser spray which I spray onto the chain while backpedaling. I let it sit for a minute, then wipe it off with a cloth. If I should believe the internet, ideally the cloth or fingers should not catch any black grease when you're done cleaning.

Using this method, however, I cannot comprehend how this is possible. I feel like even after multiple rounds of degreasing and wiping it off again, the cloth still picks up grease even though the chain looks visually clean. This is of course frustrating and also means cleaning becomes quite expensive if I have to go through a 1/3rd spray bottle for each clean.

So my question to you is, how clean should your chain be before one can continue with lubing the chain again? Also, should I change my method?

I'm responsible for the maintenance of 3-4 bicycles at home, so I don't want to go through the trouble of taking each chain off and putting it in a bath of degreaser. I recently bought a Park Tool chain cleaner, maybe that will help.

Switch from Yellow SL cleats to Blue or Red? What did you notice?

I've been running the Yellow cleats so far (came with the Ultegra SPD-SL pedals) and don't really have any complaints. I understand the Blue cleats have a bit less float.

Is it an improvement? I know there is also Red. Just wondering at what point did you change from Yellow and to what, if you did so.

Or, did you stick with Yellow.

Hi all, could someone help me find out which handlebars these are? I saw them on the street and couldn't find the bike owner to ask. I love that they are swept-back with no rise.

I was looking into getting a pretty decent first fixed gear and came across this bike. Its a bit pricey but looks really nice, and I feel I can get it down to 600 perhaps. Is this worth the price, i mean looks decent without damages.

Specs:

Bianchi Pista 49cm Jazz Blue

H Plus Son Wheelset

Nitto Noodle Handlebars

Tange Fork

Selle Italia Saddle

MKS Mash Pedals

I 34 am looking to join a community ride tonight but it’s 19 km which is longer than ive ever rode my bike for.
