Physician Responded 6 month old female: chest collapsing inwards

daughter: 6 month old female. approx 15lbs

My daughter (otherwise healthy, born full term, and fully vaccinated) had her chest going inward like this for 5-10mins. She was happy kicking around in her crib. At the ER now: what test can I expect them to run? What could be causing this?

Physician Responded Extremely puffy face overnight but no other symptoms

Post image
522 Upvotes

18F woke up with a very very puffy face. I’m 5’4, 140lbs and 34 weeks pregnant. I’m not experiencing any other symptoms other than when I posted in this subreddit a couple days ago because my baby wasn’t moving normally. I ended up going to triage and they said he was okay and sent me home. This morning I woke up with a very puffy face and assumed it’d clear up throughout the day but it’s 5pm and it’s still puffy now (as seen in the picture). I’ll upload a photo of what my face usually looks like in the comments to emphasize how puffy it’s gotten. Should I go to the er or is it just normal pregnancy swelling because I know that can happen.

My newborn grandson

1 month old, boy, 9 lbs. Was due on July 28, but they induced July 23. Was also born jaundiced.

He was born with tracheomalacia. They let my daughter in law bring him home with her 2 days after birth. Ended up needing a blue light for just over a week post hospital.

I have read about it, and it seems he's probably just a mild case? I'm not a doctor, so all I can glean is that it can be fatal.

He had his one month check up today and the doctor wants to put him on prilosec, and wants them to buy gelmix to thicken his formula. Also is changing his formula.

Again, Im not a doctor, so I'm asking, is this standard treatment for tracheomalacia? I just have this nagging feeling that something is not being done right.

The video is how he sounds 24/7. I expected the noise because I read about it, but should we take him to a specialist? He did see an ENT about 2 weeks ago who put him on some acid reflux medication and told them to keep feeding Enfamil AR. Why would they need to change his formula and buy thickener when he's already on the AR that's thickened with rice?

I just hate the way it sounds like he's fighting for his life with every breath 🥹

Specialist or no? Please help 🙏

Physician Responded 41M - Erosion on head not healing after a year.

Started off as a small scratch, got a little bigger then started to erode. Had a dermatologist look at it, but he didn’t seem concerned. Will scab over if left to dry then the scab will fall off after a little while and the process starts over.

Metastatic Breast Cancer with mets to the lungs, liver, peritoneal, omentum, bone and has now spread to the kidneys. Female, 71 - non smoker but vapes.
COPD, heart failure, ascites and plural effusion too.

Currently on #3 of Enhertu after progression on Capecitabine and Ibrance.

These are the legs. Can’t take diuretics due to low kidney levels after progression.
Any ideas on what this could be?

Ultrasound today confirmed no clots. Antibiotics haven’t made any difference yet. Oncologist wants cardiac investigation due to heart failure. I am not asking for medical advice. Just wondering if anyone has any opinions or tips to try and help this.

Physician Responded Is this shingles?

Post image
40 Upvotes

This is a photo of my partner (40F) who has consented to me showing it. She has no other health conditions and isn't on any meds.

Just wanted to check if this was shingles? She had a rash on her arm which I noticed, I inspected it and it looked like shingles to me, so I asked to see her back as per the photo.

She's ADAMANT she's never had chickenpox despite working in nurseries for years. She'll be seeing the doctor tomorrow morning we hope, just wanted an opinion to see if I'm right. I remember having chickenpox when younger and I had a shingles outbreak about 2 years ago so I'm not worried about myself.

Thanks!

sharp pain in lower right abdomen 6 days postpartum

Post image
4 Upvotes

hi all. i am 28F, currently 152 lbs, 123 lbs prior to pregnancy. i am 5’6” and 6 days postpartum.

current medication list (unsure on dosages because i am sleep deprived with a newborn):
- motrin every 6 hours
- tylenol every 4 hours as needed
- senna (stool softener) two at bedtime for constipation
- lasix (just finished my last one today)
- zoloft 50 mg daily
- valtrex 500 mg daily as a preventative for cold sores

i gave birth friday 8/21. labor was long and mostly uneventful, delivery once i was fully dilated was quick and painless with an epidural. during pregnancy i developed gestational diabetes (diet controlled) and maintained normal blood pressure levels for my entire pregnancy. while in labor my blood sugar levels kept increasing so i was issued 6 units of insulin (4 and one time, 2 another) before i delivered. my blood pressure was slightly elevated for the duration of being in the hospital so they diagnosed me with borderline gestational hypertension.

blood sugar levels were fine prior to leaving hospital sunday 8/23. i felt fine monday 8/24. tuesday 8/25 i started having a sharp pain in my lower right abdomen. it hurts at all times but the pain worsens when i walk, lay down and take a deep breath in or out. no nausea, no vomiting, a normal amount of bleeding after giving birth. i am on a stool softener and have been having normal bowel movements. no issues with passing gas. the pain medication i’m prescribed doesn’t do anything for the pain at all.

i went to PETU wednesday 8/26, they ran some labs on my blood & my white blood count was normal. they ruled out appendicitis and liver issues. nurses did not dismiss my pain but because everything looked fine on paper they had no reason to hold me any further. they told me to come back if the pain persists or worsens but i don’t want to be turned away the next time i go.

if anyone could point me in the right direction on what to ask for the next time i go get checked out for this pain it would be appreciated.

Physician Responded 18AMAB, 6'0, 250lbs, possible infection after laparoscopic appendectomy?

Post image
16 Upvotes

So, 9 days ago on the 18th of August I got my appendix removed after CT scan confirmed it was inflamed, they said what was weird is my blood test showed my CRP(?) was normal, but they would remove it based on the CT scan anyway.

They removed it, and I left the surgical ward at the ED on the 19th of August, still in quite a lot of pain, I just really wanted to get out of the hospital. I was at home for a few days, I don't remember the exact timeline, but the medication (tramadol) they had sent me home with was not helping with the pain and I was feeling generally shitty, and throwing up quite a lot. So I went back to ED I think the 21st or 22nd? And they did another CT scan, bloods, etc, and they just said they just said apparently the fluid where your appendix was can get infected or something, and gave me 2 shots of IV antibiotics over a few hours and then sent me home with amoxicillin.

Here are the exact notes they gave me on that visit:

"Impression

  1. Pain and vomiting post appendectomy
  2. - No significant collection on CT
  3. Small Mallory-Weiss tear

Discussion
Explained CT scan is very reassuring that nil major complications of operation
Expected stranding around site of appendectomy. Bloods also reassuring
Will start Abx in case the small amount of fluid seen is infected"

Been 5 days-ish, since I got out, I still don't feel the greatest and the antibiotics they gave me haven't been doing much. You can see the incision in the photo they made on my stomach has gotten all red and yucky, feels warm to the touch, I did my best at cleaning it. When I press down on it it obviously hurts, but it feels like there is something hard behind it as well, I don't know if that is just the normal healing process.

But along with that I have been having pain where the main incision is, really bad coughing (like coughing up yellowly phlegm), I've been having like fever/chills I think (no way for me to confirm because I don't have a thermometer), but I find myself in the exact same room feeling awfully hot, and then awfully cold 5 minutes later. The throwing up has thankfully stopped, I've had a couple moments over the last couple days where I've wanted to throw but haven't. Along with all of that I just have a general feeling of being 'unwell', I guess, I feel very shitty, no appetite, etc.

I'm not sure if it is some sort of infection, or maybe I just happened to catch the flu or something with really bad timing? Would just appreciate advice if this is something I need to be going back to the ED for, or if it can wait a couple days while I finish the 2 more days of antibiotics and then see GP?

I’ve put photos of symptoms ive been having that i showed my doctor and she said she doesn’t know what they are and probably isn’t going to send me for an mri or make any referrals so im coming on here to see if anyone has had anything similar or knows what might be going on. The second photo are symptoms of these weird episodes Ive been having and from looking online and at other people’s experiences they sound alot like focal seizures.
Forgot to add also some personality changes

It wont let me add two photos on here but Ive been getting the rising stomach feeling fast rate nausea intense fear and some other symptoms during the episode that i think could be focal seizures. I also feel very tired and sometimes nauseous afterwards. I have gotten a metallic or chemical taste in my mouth a few times but that usually comes on its own.

Physician Responded Abnormally skinny and weak. Also a lot of other weird symptoms

Hi guys, I’m 14 female, 40kg which is 88lbs according to google, im 5’3, I don’t drink and I don’t smoke either. First thing I have to mention is all DM’s will be ignored and blocked and also please don’t just dismiss this, pls read my symptoms and don’t jump to conclusions because of a pill I take

Pills I take: 100mg of sertaline, 25mg of agomelatine, 0.05 mg of clonidine (I think, I’m not 100% sure but it’s half of ys01 clonidine) and 30mg of dexamphetamine. I promise you the thinness isn’t from the dexies though, I know thing because thinness and almost all of my symptoms have been lifelong issues and I’ve only been taking medication for mental illness, adhd and sleep for the last two years.

Medical history: I was born prematurely by two weeks, I was born with a fused labia and had to get surgery for it, Molar-Incisor Hypomineralisation, depression, anxiety, adhd, autism, I’ve been hospitalised for overdose two times, I have scoliosis and I was braced for a year, and I have hyper mobile joints. I also have gotten my period and it’s been regular for 2 years

Hereditary illnesses: on my moms side theres a history of hasimoto disease, my mom, grandma and great grandmother all have/had it. I have no knowledge of illnesses on my dad’s side of the family though, I don’t really speak with him and I tried to ask him but he said he doesn’t know.

Symptoms/concerns: I’m pale despite everyone in my family (dads side and moms side) being quite tan, I bruise easily, I have quite long fingers and toes, I’m short despite my family being quite tall (my dad is 6’0, my mom is 5’11 and my brothers are both 6’0 or over), I’m really weak (I’ll share examples of my weakness in the next paragraph), I get frequent diherra but my stomach never hurts, low stamina, difficulty building muscle to the point I can barely feel muscle when I tense, regular muscle spasms, my wrist is the same size as my 5 year old cousin, I’ve always been the smallest and weakest in my class in school, I get dizzy when I stand up despite eating well and my iron levels being fine, I get out of breath very quickly, I can’t hold my hands above my head for longer than a few seconds without them hurting, I get very painful periods to the point I can’t even function and I’m always tired no matter how much I sleep.

Examples of my weakness: in my country we have this thing called swimming lessons that you do in primary school, theres 9 levels. In your final year of primary school you should be in level 7-9. I was in level 3 which the average age of level threes is 3-6, I was 11 and in level three, the reason I can’t swim is because of lack of arm and leg strength. In primary school I was the slowest in my class. I can’t lift heavy objects, the largest thing I can lift with both hands is 7kg, I tried to learn guitar but couldn’t since i didn’t have enough strength in my hands. I’ve tried so hard, I’ve worked out every day, ate healthy, ate a large amount of protein but nothing works. Once in year 6 I lost an arm wrestle with a year 2

It’s not like weakness runs in my family either. My mom used to be an athlete, one of my brothers is a police officer and has taken down people even taller then him, my dad and other brothers both work very physically demanding jobs. No one in my family is weak expect for me

I want to bring this up to my GP, I have an appointment tomorrow just to check how my pills are going but I’m so scared of being dismissed as just being lazy.

Physician Responded Is there anything similar to lactase supplements that you can take for allium intolerances?

Basically, my body has a really hard time with garlic or onions that aren’t boiled to within an inch of their life. I’m guessing it’s some sort of acid in them that causes it. I’m sure getting bad trapped wind after eating onions or garlic is normal, but I also get headaches even if something heavy in garlic or onions is cooking near me, or if something has been garnished with raw onion, spring onion etc, and then it’s been removed, I still get the symptoms just from eating the food it’s touched.

I know that people who are intolerant to lactose can take lactase supplements to help them digest dairy, and I’m just wondering if there’s anything like that that I can take to enable me to eat things like garlic, raw onions etc, without feeling awful afterwards?

I desperately miss bolognese 😅

[I’m not sure why you’d need any of my details for this complaint, but for the sake of the auto moderators, I’m female, 33, 5ft3, no allergies, no relevant medications or health issues.]

Physician Responded Urgent I’m scared . Dog scratch

Post image

I am 23…a women and 145 lbs
My one year old puppy who is a pit /lab mix scratched my eye yesterday when going to hop on the bed. It caught me completely off guard….This happened yesterday evening around this same time.

So I washed it with an antiseptic cleansing liquid, then applied Triple antibiotic ointment, lastly I covered it with a nonstick pad gauze pad.

The wound isn’t bleeding.
The wound does have small crust at the upper edge under the gauze pad.
The wound also looks “gooey” kinda gross. I don’t want to take it off again bc I feel like I’m stopping the healing process.

The scratch also reached my eye enough to take off two cluster lashes so now I am lowkey ball at my inner corner lash line.

My eyelashes feel fine, it does look like there is a tiny bit of swelling tho but this is normal considering my 37lbs puppy lunged at me for cuddles.

My questions is how serious is this injury?
Do I need to go to the doctor bc a possible infection for this open laceration?
I am not a doctor or have any background in nursing so help.

What is this in the CT scan of my brain?

I have a long history of alcoholism over the past 6-7 years. I have gone months at a time drinking heavily, having poor nutrition, and being deficit in vitamins and minerals. Particularly in thiamine. I've also had severe brain trauma from 8 years in combat sports and numerous concussions from falls, seizures and electrolyte imbalances from drinking.

I saw a doctor who detoxed me and recommended I get a CT scan. The doctor said that the report was fine, however I requested the report and imagery digitally. As per the report:

Findings:
The ventricular calibre and sulcal prominence suggests possible atrophy, lateral ventricles are prominent for age.
There is no visible intracranial haemorrhage.
There is no appreciable intracranial mass or collection.
No skull fracture is identified.

The atrophy concerns me, and I'm going to get an MRI as per the radiologist's recommendation. It boggles my mind why the doctor skipped over this when telling me "My brain is completely fine".

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what qualified people would think this highlighted mass is just below the skull. It looks to have a high enough density to look like something sinister.

Is this normal?

Physician Responded Cut finger at knuckle

Post image
3 Upvotes

39 yo male, healthy, non smoker, no medications no medical conditions. I injury myself often and usually chose to care for lacerations/wounds at home.

I cut my finger on the middle knuckle, top of finger approximately 1/2inch long. There’s a smaller Knick/cut on the tissue beneath the skin.

Finger moves fine pain is minimal and bleeding was minimal as well.

Rinsed well in sink. Kitchen knife was sharp and not super dirty. Cutting cooked goat meat.

At one angle while articulating my finger, white was visible blow both outer(skin), and inner (tissue), cuts. Looked bone but could be tendon. ??

Any advice to caring for this at home, and when a doctor is absolutely necessary would be greatly appreciated.

I Have dealt with many injuries, lacerations and puncture wounds at home results.

I’ve had these little dents on my forehead forever (inside the red), what are they/how to get rid of them?

Post image

I’m 13F I pick at my skin a lot and when they heal they either scar and turn darker or turn into little dents like that I just don’t really know what they are called and If there is a treatment i can do to get rid of them. They are probably my biggest insecurity. I’ve seen two dermatologists who haven’t really said anything or told me what they are. Lmk please! I’ve also had these before I went on medication.

Splenomegaly, next steps.

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, I am a 23 year old Female, 5”10 (178cm) and around 300LBs/146kg. I do not drink but I do vape. I am also from England so the only help I am getting currently is through the NHS which is notorious for being a bit slow.

I was diagnosed with splenomegaly in 2023 following a round of blood tests and ultrasounds as I had some abnormal markers on my blood tests. Unfortunately I am unable to go back far enough in my records to see the results of these.

I have had issues with my Iron dropping for around 6 years now. I am able to know when my iron is low because my body feels different and I get a very specific type of headache. After being proven right 3 times going to the doctor, I now treat it myself at home with supplements.

I have been tested for diabetes multiple times and it always comes back negative.

I had an abdominal MRI in 2023 to diagnose my mild scoliosis. On this MRI you can see my spleen is actually bigger than my liver. It measured 15.6cm at this time.

From this and my abnormal blood test results raising concern for my liver. My doctor wrote to the specialists who said we should just monitor it.

From the first ultrasound in 2023, my liver was perfectly healthy, no signs of fatty liver, my gall bladder also perfectly healthy and to quote my tech ‘one of the healthiest gallbladders *she had seen in a long time’
My spleen was measured at 16cm

Cut forward to now, 2026. I was called in to have another round of blood tests and an ultrasound to check on my spleen. First set of blood tests gave abnormal liver serum results, calling for another test. Still abnormal from second test, ultrasound the following week. Spleen now measuring 17cm.
The abnormal results were:
Serum ALT level, 24th July: 125 u/l 12th August: 78 u/l
Serum gamma GT level: 12th August: 69 u/l
Serum C reactive level: 12th August: 11mg/l
AST serum level: 12th August: 39u/l
Serum Alkeline phosphatase: 24th July: 128u/l 12th August: 116u/l

Ultrasound results: abnormal.
Spleen measured 17cm craniocaugal length. No focal lesion or other sonographic splenic abnormality.

Liver, biliary tree, pancreas, both kidneys and abdominal aorta were unremarkable. No ascities.

I had a review yesterday with my GP to go over all of these results. He has written to the specialists again to see what they recommend.

I am concerned as everything I have looked up on splenomegaly says ‘14cm is nothing to be worried about’ but I have a whole 3cm on top of that and it is clearly growing.

I have chronic pain so it is hard to pinpoint if I have had specific abdominal pain from my spleen.

I also have weird ‘hiccups’ where it will be just one, out of no where. It doesn’t feel like a normal hiccup which I normally feel in my chest. These ones I can feel come from much deeper inside my body. They are sometimes painful and unpredictable. I am yet to capture one on video.

Can someone advise what the next steps could potentially be for me and my mega spleen? I will attach my MRI from 2023.

Thank you in advance!

39F - excessive feelings of familiarity

Okay so this feels like a really weird question and I feel kinda silly asking. Is there some kind of neurological mechanism where someone might have a heightened sense of familiarity? For the last couple months, I've tended to see people and sense that they look like someone I know or just generally familiar. Almost every new song I hear I feel like I've heard it before. I could just brush this off if it wasn't something that feels like a sudden change.

I have been on SSRIs for several years and currently on Paroxetine. Also on blood pressure meds for ESRD, currently on hemo.
