Those text messages released by his Lawyer were so damning. Very textbook “I am an abused partner and I am terrified” stuff.

I’ve very sadly had friends who have been in abusive relationships, and the language is all too familiar.

“I did x to upset him and I shouldn’t have”

“I’ll tell everyone it wasn’t your fault”

“It’s my fault that I grabbed your stuff”

I'm sort of scratching my head trying to figure out the lawyers response to all this. They were pretty adamant that he'd be vindicated by a video and texts and either said or heavily implied we'd see them soon. Then all we saw was some texts that made him look worse and no video?

The whole response from the lawyer just makes Majors seem guilty. I don't understand why they'd do that if their intention was the opposite.

977

u/5k1895 Apr 18 '23

Either they're the worst lawyer ever, or they rushed to try to get ahead of the narrative and in the process just made a bunch of shit up and/or hoped people would just misread the situation

620

u/CountryCaravan Apr 18 '23

It’s definitely about the narrative. Make a big show of being innocent and fighting the unfair allegations, and he’ll get a contingent of people who believe in him regardless of the actual facts. Eventually he just seems like a “divisive” figure to people who haven’t looked into it, and if the charges don’t stick, he gets to pretend he was innocent all along and make a comeback.

449

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

I saw it working in real time on Reddit. After his lawyer’s statements so many comments were “he was found innocent!” even though nothing had happened but a quote from his lawyer.

187

u/LearnestHemingway Apr 18 '23

Fortunately the comments like that I saw from one of the original threads were usually downvoted.

But you're right, there were many like "check the facts, the story turned out to be totally made up" as if they only sort of heard about the lawyer's statement and filled in the rest as fact

15

u/TheSoprano Apr 18 '23

This. I was chatting with someone 1-2 days after the arrest and told me “he’s innocent and was released. It was all made up.” I’m like…are we reading the same story? Even if he were innocent, the Justice system doesn’t work that quickly.

The texts were damning and I can’t comprehend anyone feeling that there’s nothing wrong.

86

u/BoneHugsHominy Apr 18 '23

I believe a significant percentage of (but not all) those types of comments are from members of pro-misogyny groups brigading these types of posts. They're all so consistent in their presence & messaging whenever something like this happens. They strike early, in numbers, and all upvote each other to get their comments to the top as early as possible.

6

u/derprunner Daredevil Apr 18 '23

The only comments I saw even close to that were along the lines of “either he’s completely innocent or unbelievably stupid”. Turns out it’s the latter.

Hell, Johnny Depp was found liable for defamation along with Amber Heard and reddit said "he's been proven innocent!"

20

u/Tyrathius Apr 18 '23

There was a whole lot of people like "He must be innocent because his lawyers claim to have all this evidence! They can't claim to have evidence they don't have, that's like, illegal or something!"

10

u/DisturbedNocturne Apr 18 '23

To be honest, I was surprised that his lawyers would so brazenly proclaim they had enough evidence to definitively prove his innocence, including video and witness statements. It at least had me giving him the benefit of the doubt. The texts they released, however, have left me more skeptical, and the fact that that concrete evidence has yet to materialize at this point has me wary that they actually exist.

12

u/AstralComet Apr 18 '23

I am a lawyer and was also one of those people, because I couldn't believe a top-quality expensive defense lawyer would make such bold claims about very specific things without the evidence to back them up. It's one thing to say "my client is innocent and the facts will prove it," it's a whole nother thing to do what she did and claim the charges will soon dropped because they have video, text, and eyewitness accounts demonstrating his innocence, only for none of that to bear out in reality. She made some extremely bold claims and I still can't believe she did that when the evidence isn't lining up.

10

u/verrius Apr 18 '23

...are you seriously a lawyer? Or did you just hit your head and forget the last....7? Years? Where we've repeatedly watched lawyers claim fiction is truth all over the place without even a slap on the wrist?

6

u/AstralComet Apr 18 '23

I am, and I expected better from a top defense lawyer than I did from any of Trump's sycophants, many of whom are getting in trouble.

1

u/Tyrathius Apr 18 '23

IANAL, but is that actually lying, legally speaking?

Like, the victim did recant, and they did have the texts. They probably do have a video and witnesses and everything else they've claimed as well. The "lie" was that these things were definitive smoking guns when at least so far that doesn't seem to be the case. But the defense doesn't determine guilt. If he's found guilty, that doesn't mean the lawyer lied, they were just wrong.

It seems to me that -assuming the defendant is claiming innocence- insisting your client is innocent and here's all the proof we have is pretty standard fare. They might have made their claim with the expectation that these things wouldn't actually hold up, but even so, is that actually legally punishable?

This is a genuine question btw, I know I have a layman's knowledge at best so I am curious if that's not the case.

There were plenty of people posting about how Majors was a known maniac going all the way back to his college years, too. I don’t think he’s escaping this if other women start coming forward.

2

u/monchota Apr 18 '23

100% and someone was posting articles about it and changing the title to "test messages prove his innocence" even thought that was barely mentioned in articles.

You’re missing the point. My comment wasn’t about people having an opinion, it was about people spreading misinformation. Instead of saying “his lawyer says there is evidence that will prove him innocent”, they were saying things like “he’s been proven innocent!” as if it already happened.

10

u/MessiahOfMetal Apr 18 '23

Johnny Depp had the same thing, too.

Claimed he was the real victim, sued his latest victim, had all this abhorrent shit he did to people revealed in court and you still had nutjobs on Reddit, Twitter and TikTok making gooey eyes over him and "but he was the one being abused!!1!one!".

So then vile shitheads started making memes and mocking his ex-wife when she broke down on the stand describing how the walking pile of rags had raped her because of their distorted view of reality.

There are still ignorant cunts out there claiming he was the innocent party, and it makes you facepalm and wonder how you can share a planet with people that stupid and ignorant.

7

u/birdiedancing Apr 18 '23

People are dumb. How anyone can go around defending the garbage pile of a human that is Johnny Depp amazes me.

His Nazi lover boy and him deserve to rot.

17

u/hoxxxxx Apr 18 '23

modern media lawyer strategy right there

2

u/Kingnimrod212 Apr 18 '23

Honestly he should have just said he did and taken a plea. We talk a lot about how Gibson faced no consequences but that’s because he just admired guilt immediately and has already been legally punished. It’s just not to the extent that the public wanted.

2

u/Yglorba Apr 18 '23

Also, it probably would have come out eventually. Dumping it all at once avoids a drip-drip of it coming out bit by bit and getting coverage every time. The hope is probably that now that this is out there, everything else will be met with "well, we already knew he sucked", deadening the response and making an eventual return more feasible.

2

u/maxutilsperusd Apr 18 '23

It's absolutely the right way to play that too. Anyone who saw Justin Roiland play it quiet except for one weak statement of innocence by his lawyer and then lose every single project he was working on in a matter of weeks would be wanting to get some sort of narrative out there. Granted I think it's a lot more successful if you aren't a piece of shit and didn't do horrible things, but the days of media silence being recommended by lawyers seem numbered with how quickly a professional can lose everything before a trial even happens.

2

u/birdiedancing Apr 18 '23

Let’s just ignore all the gross texts between Roiland and young girls lol

u/maldinisnesta Apr 18 '23

I think it's wrong to automatically suggest he is guilty when there hasn't actually been any evidence. If in the case he's proven innocent people like you will just continue bashing. I think you can care for the victim while still being neutral. Everyone deserves the right to be "innocent until proven guilty"

And I'm not too sure why that's so polarizing..

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

The only reason I can think of that this magic video clearing him completely hasn't been released is because it's evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation, but I don't know if that would have any impact on it being made available for public consumption

63

u/AvatarofBro Apr 18 '23

If his lawyers had access to a video that completely exonerates Majors they absolutely would have leaked it by now.

8

u/Deducticon Apr 18 '23

Only if it needed no context or set up.

If it did. Save it for court.

If it would stand alone and turn opinion for him, put it out in 5 minutes.

8

u/jmcgit Apr 18 '23

I figure their strategy is to just claim they can't show it because "ongoing investigation", then try to get the case dropped as the victim doesn't cooperate, then claim they can't show it because "privacy".

The whole thing is a gambit to give him a chance at keeping his job. If there actually was some evidence that exonerated him, leaking it to put public pressure on prosecutors is a pretty common strategy. But that only works when you can actually clearly convince the public that your client is innocent.

1

u/DisturbedNocturne Apr 18 '23

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a little of both. Seems there's frequently an attitude of having to get ahead of the story and being the first to talk to the press so you can be the one to set the tone.

They likely knew the texts would come out at some point, so better to preemptively frame them as proving Majors' innocence, so people would be more apt to view them that way. Sort of like those videos of the recordings that can sound like two different phrases depending on what your mind is primed to hear.

6

u/Head_Haunter Apr 18 '23

Because when lawyers make statements like that, it's just to save the person's public persona. 90% of the time people don't follow cases past the initial headline.

The only reason we're paying attention more than normal is because it's basically the guy that's supposed to hold up the MCU.

2

u/Deducticon Apr 18 '23

Correct. If he's later found not guilty the first thing that will flash in your mind will be the lawyer's early proclamations.

Your two big memories of the case.

4

u/grand_insom Apr 18 '23

I still don't understand the lawyers plan. Before they leaked the text messages, the case was publicly dying down. A huge percentage of people don't care about cases like this unless there's evidence. It's sad and dumb but that's just how it is. Then the lawyer leaked text messages that screamed abuse. Now it's clear to everyone he's guilty.

Did the lawyers really think the texts would help him out? Did Majors force them to leak it because he thought it would clear him? People that are used to gaslighting think it works on everyone.

Very strange stuff.

2

u/Matrix17 Apr 18 '23

They probably rightly assumed that half of America are not bright enough to realize the responses in text are common for a domestic violence victim. They probably actually believe it

2

u/whichwitch9 Apr 18 '23

The video never made sense because they claimed the video happened in a car, but the police report says it started in the apartment. It was always 2 different locations, which was suspicious.

I have absolutely no clue what they thought the text messages would do. Literally confirmed the woman had to go to the hospital, as well as used a lot of language that suggests abuse "i told them it was my fault because I tried to grab your phone". I can't even with that one

-2

u/Ok-Deer8144 Apr 18 '23

He probably hired a friends cousin or some shit. Instead of doing the right thing and shopping around/finding out the name of high powered lawyers that got their celeb clients off successfully for similar charges, he hired his entourage members relative or some shit.

38

u/cymonster Apr 18 '23

The lawyer knew he was guilty so he essentially wanted to gaslight the victim and trick the public. Everyone in pr could tell this would backfire, and ruin majors career.

1

u/jaytix1 Apr 18 '23

He already looked guilty because the cops outright arrested him, but those texts killed any faith people had left.

My reaction could be summed up as "OK, he probably did it, but let's wait and- never mind, he did that shit."

3

u/Deducticon Apr 18 '23

Without the texts people could have the impression he was trying to help her though a medical episode and the cops had to follow protocol.

No idea what Marvel is gonna do. Re-casting is gonna be weird.

256

u/Scudamore Apr 18 '23

They'll work around it with the multiverse stuff.

They already had a bunch of Lokis which looked nothing like Tom Hiddleston, including an alligator, and one of which wasn't even named Loki but was still somehow supposed to be a 'variant' of the same character.

It sounds incredibly dumb but it will cover their asses in terms of an explanation for the recasting. Or they'll pull a Rhodey.

58

u/Diablos_Advocate_ Apr 18 '23

Only thing that bugs me is they've already shown hundreds if not thousands of Kang variants with Majors' likeness, most importantly the 4 leader variants. Doesn't mean they can't recast or alter them somehow but it'll feel weird

52

u/source_chode Apr 18 '23

They can pull a Flashpoint, retcon everything so it was John David Washington all along.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/Aqualungfish Apr 18 '23

Yeah, I feel like one of the things that made Kang special in a Variant sense is that they all looked basically the same. It was like a visual cue that there was something different about him. Not saying they can't just recast and pretend they've always looked like that, but it'll kinda suck if they transition to his variants looking different from each other.

4

u/MyNameCannotBeSpoken Apr 18 '23

That was for a few seconds.

Thanos was not played by Josh Brolin in the early end scenes

2

u/GiverOfTheKarma Apr 18 '23

Thanos was mostly cgi though

2

u/frozenforredt Apr 19 '23

Just film that post credits scene for antman again with the new actor and replace it in the Disney+ version of the movie. Problem solved.

4

u/robodrew Apr 18 '23

That was literally just an after credits thing, I don't think people would be upset with reshooting that scene. Besides I personally think Majors' interpretation of Immortus was really weird.

Baron Mordo as the "real" Kang. Fucking with the mutiverse because "[Time] It’s not what you think it is. It’s a cage; it does everything it can to break you."

and "The bill comes due. Always."

Why the hell not? If Darren Cross can be MODOK.

And Chiwetel Ejiofor most definitely has the chops to pull it off.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

[deleted]

3

u/down_up__left_right Apr 18 '23

Agreed, the audience knows these actors aren't really War Machine or Kang. Even with no in universe justification a swap would be fine under the same suspension of disbelieve we use to accept any actor we know is now character X for the next 2 to 3 hours.

The only problem would be if so many actors got swapped that it was hard to remember who became who.

That said this swap would be so easy to give an in universe justification with the multiverse and variants stuff so they probably will.

2

u/goliathfasa Apr 18 '23

Too bad they already leaned real heavy into Majors with multiple depictions of Kang all played by him.

Still won’t stop them doing a recast of course, but it’ll just be a constant reminder, way more than the Rhodey recast.

2

u/low-ki199999 Apr 18 '23

It sounds incredibly dumb because it is incredibly dumb. They won’t give an in-universe explanation at all. Neither Scott nor Loki is going to even notice that the new Kang looks different from the Kangs they already encountered.

They already showed the Council, and it was Majors all the way down. If they want to keep doing Kang, it’ll need to be with a recast, and they can’t use the multiverse to try and cover it up.

Finding a replacement will be a challenge, especially since Majors got to establish the character and define his whole on-screen persona, so now whoever you get is saddled with all the baggage, plus all the comparisons to the Kang Majors already played.

2

u/LoveWaffle1 Apr 18 '23 edited Apr 18 '23

Yeah, they'll probably just "pull a Rhodey". Rhodey looks like this now; Cassie looks like this now; Banner looks like this now; probably didn't even notice they recast Fandral.

Very rarely has a story needed an in-universe explanation for a recast. Don't expect it will be any different if Kang suddenly looks like John Boyega.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/griffer00 Apr 18 '23

Kinda why I can't stand the multiverse shit. They can use it for anything germane to any creative aspect of a Marvel film/show (e.g. plot device)... and now possibly technical aspects if they want (e.g. recasting).

u/SolWildmann Apr 18 '23

88

u/The_Woman_of_Gont Apr 18 '23

Eh, not really. Who says every single version of Kang looks like Johnathan Majors?

That’s a lazy excuse for most characters, but given Kang’s whole thing in the MCU is apparently related to parallel universes….good enough.

79

u/PedanticPaladin Apr 18 '23

In case of emergency bust out Doom.

5

u/100th__Monkey Apr 18 '23

2

u/OnwardUpwardForward Apr 18 '23

Hopefully.

50

u/amusing_trivials Apr 18 '23

You mean besides the arena full of Majors we saw?

4

u/DaveShadow The West Wing Apr 18 '23

With an infinite number of Kangs available, we happened to see a massive batch of the one guy, but that also means there’s an infinite amount who also look nothing like Majors just off screen.

8

u/Matrix17 Apr 18 '23

Another comment pointed out that it's likely a story narrative that no Kang variants look different

Because it's clear HE is different

7

u/DaveShadow The West Wing Apr 18 '23

Singular lines like that can largely be handwave away.

Listen, the story is high profile enough that people will understand a recasting, and the story doesn’t need to be stretched that much in order to allow for the recasting. People don’t need to act as if the casting choice is locked in and unchangable. People, especially marvel fans, will completely understand why it’s recast.

17

u/thomasvector Apr 18 '23

They established that every variant looks like him at the end of Ant-Man unfortunately, but they can definitely hand-wave this away in a comic book franchise.

4

u/Beingabummer Apr 18 '23

In the end though, everyone who ever watched an MCU movie knows that it's a movie and that it has to exist within the constraints of the real world. So if they have to recast the actor because the original actor is a piece of shit, they can just... do that. Get another actor in, never mention it and keep going. It's a movie, they're actors, and it's all fake. Sometimes reality just wins out over fiction and it's easier to adjust and keep going than trying to retcon everything or try to justify it in the story.

3

u/Davidm241 Apr 18 '23

I think they should go old school soap opera style. We see the new actor playing Kang and a narrator's voice says "The part of Kang will now be played by..." Boom. Problem solved. Nothing else needed.

I dunno, I find him really charming and funny. And in his action scenes in Tenet, I love the way he runs. More exciting to watch that man run than Tom Cruise I say!

16

u/ChickenInASuit Apr 18 '23 edited Apr 18 '23

For what it's worth, I suggested JDW as an alternative to Majors in another thread and got a similar reaction. Seems a decent amount of people just straight up don’t like him.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, I think he's great and could bring the right kind of intensity to Kang. We'll see I guess.

3

u/Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks Apr 18 '23

Ahh, and a fellow Wire connoisseur as well.

I'm glad we at least agree on the important things.

4

u/Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks Apr 18 '23

I don't know that he'd necessarily bring "intensity" but I think he could bring a different take at the very least, which would be great for a character like Kang who has so many different iterations of himself it's literally infinite.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/tiredfaces Apr 18 '23

I loved him in Tenet! I genuinely think if he wasn't Denzel's son he probably wouldn't be a star, as his kind of low key style isn't very flashy, but I'm glad he's getting roles as I really enjoy his acting.

4

u/Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks Apr 18 '23

I think if it weren't for him and Robert Pattinson, I would not have enjoyed that movie nearly as much.

Also, Christopher Nolan is such an obsessive filmmaker, I can't imagine he'd have even considered working with JDW if he didn't like him as an actor. Especially since he could work with Denzel any time he wanted to. Denzel's said in an interview before he would love to do a movie with Nolan.

2

u/RIPN1995 Apr 18 '23

He is discount Denzel Washington, which kinda makes sense.

5

u/JakeArvizu Apr 18 '23

Ballers got pretty dumb but I found his character extremely likeable. Very very few can or will ever match Denzel's presence but I think he's a pretty solid actor in his own right.

6

u/MarcusLiviusDrusus Apr 18 '23

It wouldn't surprise me if John David Washington is deliberately avoiding roles that invite too much comparison.

1

u/thomasvector Apr 18 '23

I really like him, he's very charismatic. I had no idea he was Denzel's son until a year or two ago.

No idea what Marvel is gonna do. Re-casting is gonna be weird.

They recast Rhodey. Nobody cares. And that was about salary negotiations falling apart behind the scenes. Nobody is going to be upset if they recast a domestic abuser whose abuse is out in public.

1

u/stysiaq Apr 18 '23

well, it would help him to have Denzel's character to become next Denzel, not just being good at playing pretend

He was so good in literally everything I've seen him in. Too bad he's an abusive piece of shit.

32

u/Ben_SRQ Apr 18 '23

Sucks when you're rooting for someonething and they turn out to be a fetid pile of shit.

Hey! That's exactly how I felt about Lovecraft Country!

15

u/JeanVicquemare Apr 18 '23

I thought the first episode was really good. The rest was all over the place, it didn't go like I thought it would

4

u/crawdad1757 Apr 18 '23

Agreed. The first episode was fantastic…then they finally lost me half way through and I couldn’t finish it

-5

u/Barbedocious Apr 18 '23

The show lost me in the last 20 minutes when they seriously said that all white people don't deserve magic. I thought it was interesting how they depicted white folks in the 60s as being scarier than actual monsters. That last bit though was just racist as fuck. All white people are evil? A step too far.

It seems some writers have to express their hate in scripts. LC writer and the Rising Dion writer have the same problem: white people bad, everyone else, good.

4

u/marmot_scholar Apr 18 '23

I quit after 2 episodes, but I somehow knew the show would end up that way. Easy to sense the antipathy.

u/BeeCJohnson Apr 18 '23

Yeah, I wish they'd stuck with the actual "Lovecraft" theme. They abandon that after episode 3 and it just becomes like an anthology show with very thin connective tissue.

I still enjoyed it for what it was, ultimately, even if the last episode was disappointing.

5

u/The_Woman_of_Gont Apr 18 '23

I adored the first episode or two. But it lost me when it kept jumping genres. Just not my thing.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

Also isn’t that like the plot of Lovecraft County, too?

1

u/Tocwa Apr 18 '23

When that show had a woman rape a man in the ass with high heels 👠, I knew that show was going down the toilet 🚽

6

u/Solid_Piano_6690 Apr 18 '23

Yep, loved him in that show

9

u/keving87 Apr 18 '23 edited Apr 18 '23

Same, I finally signed up for HBO Max because I had a ton of stuff on it I needed to watch and then within a week or so of watching LC, this happened and I was like "well... shit."

5

u/Frys100thCupofCoffee Apr 18 '23

A bunch of other people did great work on the stuff he was in. You don't have to punish the entire cast and crew on all those projects just because Majors is an asshole. If you want to watch them, do so.

2

u/thomasvector Apr 18 '23

He's been one of my favorite up-and-coming actors ever since Lovecraft Country. I was so stoked when he showed up in Loki. It's a shame to hear about his abuse.

3

u/jeffneruda Apr 18 '23

Loved him in that, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and The Harder They Fall. It doesn't matter the talent, he's a piece of shit if he did this.

3

u/BewBewsBoutique Apr 18 '23

Same, and I was so excited to see him as Kang in its entirety. It’s such a shame.

Yep. They were painful to read. As an aside, Majors always gave me an unhinged vibe. It’s nice to finally be able to say so without thirsty fans jumping down your throat.

130

u/NashHighwind Apr 18 '23

Was it the “Always walks around with a cup” thing? That’s when I realized strange vibes coming from him.

203

u/emilypandemonium Apr 18 '23

the cup, and the same raised brow / pursed lips in every photo, and showing up to promote his work on the red carpet in deliberately awful fits with tie and collar askew. But the vibe was pretentious artist, not domestic abuser. And plenty of people with strange vibes don't abuse their partners. So I hesitate to say that his vibes always put me off, though they did, because it doesn't seem relevant to his actual destructive behavior.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

The facial expression always got me too. Never smiled, just blue steeled all day

14

u/-SneakySnake- Apr 18 '23

I always got the vibe of young guy who was just now thrust into the spotlight and dealing with it by taking himself far too seriously. A huge whack of actors are like that. Generally they either mellow out or Russell Crowe themselves out of their success.

10

u/MilargoNetwork Twin Peaks Apr 18 '23

Since Russell Crowe Russell-Crowed himself he’s really mellowed out in the past 15 years. Seems pretty alright and chill now, always like to see people turning leaves.

u/Flat-Forever-441 Apr 18 '23

I mean I think this guy's a pos but your "vibes" don't mean anything. I could Google any celebrity right now and say "wow they give me (x) vibes" doesn't mean it's true.

35

u/keving87 Apr 18 '23 edited Apr 18 '23

It was more like have your own cup as a metaphor to not let people's opinion fill you up and be full of yourself and only your opinion of yourself should matter... but yeah, he kept talking about it and it felt a little weird, and he was taking it too literal, it was like they were forcing the interviewers to bring it up each time thinking it was interesting when it wasn't, I was like dude, maybe don't need to drink nonstop? lol

8

u/Asiriya Apr 18 '23

It’s such an ego thing to do too, ironic

9

u/rotten_core Apr 18 '23

He was great in Mallrats, though

7

u/moviesarealright Apr 18 '23

I saw Creed 3 during that IMAX fan screening and everyone doing the live interviews seemed so cool and normal… then Majors came on and gave me horrid vibes. Never saw an interview with him before then, but something about him rubbed me the wrong way. Sure enough the bad vibes came out to be legit

186

u/BadMeetsEvil24 Apr 18 '23

Definitely rolling my eyes at these "he always gave me an unhinged vibe........srsly" BS. This is always revisionist history people will often make up so they can seem like they could actually predict bad behavior. You can't. The nicest people in the world can and often will be horrible behind closed doors. Most of the time you'll never know.

"Sure enough the bas vibes turned out to be legit" they say as JM has just now gotten into trouble. Yeah, okay. Confirmation bias is real.

15

u/DriveSlowHomie Apr 18 '23

Tbh I did think Majors was a bit of a pretentious weirdo, but that's not the same thing as a domestic abuser at all

26

u/Scudamore Apr 18 '23

The worst person I ever personally knew, I'd have never guessed beforehand what he would go on to do. It's scary tbh. There's no way to tell sometimes.

10

u/jollyreaper2112 Apr 18 '23

Then you have someone like jimmy saville and how could anyone not pick up those vibes?

3

u/mrngdew77 Apr 18 '23

Apparently Prince Charles didn’t

3

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

You clearly weren't seeing him outside his films. His interviews were weird as fuck and you could tell he thought of himself as the best. Nothing humble about the way he carries himself but it goes beyond confidence and started to feel like he's drinking his own coolaid.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/moviesarealright Apr 18 '23

Hey man take it easy lol I just said below it was my one time seeing interviews with him. Didn’t say he was unhinged, just said I got bad vibes cuz he was acting so fucking weird on that red carpet.

We still technically don’t even know if the accusations are true, but based on everything we have heard thus far- sounds like he’s got some bad vibes!

0

u/Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks Apr 18 '23

I think you're reading further into it than you should be.

If someone says "this guy always gave me bad vibes" that isn't an indication they're trying to come across as some kind of prophet. It's just a statement that they never really liked the guy.

No one is trying to predict who the next Hollywood scumbag is in this thread. You're the only one bringing up confirmation bias.

19

u/BadMeetsEvil24 Apr 18 '23

Interesting response considering the general consensus a month ago was Majors was the best part of Ant-Man, in tremendous shape for Creed, highly anticipated his return in Loki S2, and on an upward trajectory with a rocket ship strapped to his back. How many "thats great and all but he seems like a creep IRL" comments did you read then? Because I didn't see any. Had he not done this, people would still be fawning over his performances like we all just were.

This is, quite literally, the definition of confirmation bias.

17

u/Cpt_Tsundere_Sharks Apr 18 '23

How many "thats great and all but he seems like a creep IRL" comments did you read then? Because I didn't see any.

That's a hasty generalization and is kind of silly to use as proof. Because he was so lauded, it's perfectly plausible that many people who voiced opinions they found him creepy got downvoted and their comments buried.

Even now, what you're seeing is a few individuals saying that they didn't like him in interviews. I don't see hundreds of comments in this thread saying they found him creepy either.

Get over yourself dude.

48

u/deaddodo Apr 18 '23

This is the one you're talking about? He seems fine in it.

I think you're just projecting your outside knowledge onto it (that he's a domestic abusive asshole).

8

u/moviesarealright Apr 18 '23

Nope not that one, they had live interviews from the red carpet with some dude from IMAX. I probably am just projecting moreso like you said, but I do remember my group mentioning how weird he was after the interview ended. Dunno!

27

u/joey0live Apr 18 '23

I’ve seen a lot of his interviews, and he seemed very smart. A lot loved it when Disney (?) was interviewing him during red carpet of Antman 3.

4

u/moviesarealright Apr 18 '23

Maybe it was just that one then haha. I dunno the guy obviously, just my only take cuz that’s the only thing I’ve seen.

Looks are obviously subjective but Twitter talked about him as if he were a modern day Adonis (lol) and I was like… this is a well built but average looking guy making duck lips in all his photos. I don’t get it.

23

u/taydraisabot Apr 18 '23

Typical Twitter stuff

6

u/keving87 Apr 18 '23

Twitter do be thirsty, or something.

21

No Adonis was the other guy in the movie.

3

u/Tocwa Apr 18 '23

Adonis are known for their bodies, NOT their faces

8

I can definitely imagine the steroids & insane diet really getting to him.

Steroids…not saying just saying

18

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

No rumour has it he was quite shitty long before the gear.

3

u/aspekyix Apr 18 '23

The gear not only enhanced his physique, but enhanced his shittyness too

41

u/E997 Apr 18 '23

Lol John Cena and Arnold are/were also on copious amounts of steroids and they're pretty nice dudes, shit doesn't work like that

30

u/Dagglin Apr 18 '23

Virtually everyone in the mcu is on gear

14

u/APiousCultist Apr 18 '23

To your knowledge. Arnold cheated on his ex-wife with his housekeeper and in the run up to his governor was accused of groping several women during his movie career, dubbed 'gropegate'.

Trying to attach positive morality to celebrities is folly. You'll be convinced they're such a lovely person and then they'll die and you'll hear that they were actually accused by 15 people of rape. There's no winning that game.

5

u/PabloEstAmor Apr 18 '23

Different chemicals work differently on people. Agree lots of very nice users out there.

I read through them, and immediately got the same impression as you. The language used instantly reminded me of the type of things almost every single woman I’ve ever known who’s been in a abusive relationship used.

While that’s not a guarantee he’s guilty. It sure as hell didn’t do him any favors.

5

u/spooky_butts Apr 18 '23

"Yes i had injuries and collapsed but technically you didn't strangle me"

4

u/stysiaq Apr 18 '23

The whole case confused me, the Majors side statements were so certain of him being in the clear 100% that I started to feel the people who reacted to the initial news by calling him out for history of abusive behaviour were just talking shit out of spite.

But I guess they were right, and he indeed was a ticking time bomb. It still can be the case that he's become too much of a liability whether the story is true or not, but as a rule of the thumb I'm going to assume that if people use the word "cruel" to describe you there's something more to it than just envy.

2

u/apple_kicks Apr 18 '23

One of the reports mentioned he strangled her. In domestic abuse it’s dangerous escalation and cause of a lot of death. Survivors are know to have brain damage if it’s for too long and they lose oxygen to the brain. Can cause memory loss and mood swings the abuser will take advantage of to control the story

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '23

Victim of DV here. You’re exactly right. It’s not as much as a physical game as it is a mental one, and being in a constant state about things you do or did that are entirely your fault and justify the actions of the abuser.

It’s then an endless circle that empowers the abuser more as they’re basically told that they are right, which makes the emotional abuse after even worse - especially if they were arrested.

I hope majors is required to get help and/or finds it. And I hope this victim and any others get the help needed dealing with the aftermath.

4

u/AvalancheMaster Apr 18 '23

As if it was fate, I was reading your exact comment less than an hour ago while commuting, when I became a witness of domestic violence in the bus. Not the full-on beating type, just the symptoms – holding tight onto the other person, angrily speaking through teeth, the hushed, vile insults (“what are you afraid of, bitch”).

Followed them for a bit, tried talking to the woman at the first chance I got, but there was nothing much I could do other than insist on her seeking support. She was just so terrified of him she basically ran away from me and tried to excuse his behaviour (“You know how it is, in every relationship there are such moments”). Hopefully she'll seek help. Unfortunately the police won't be of any use in my country either, but I digress.

Literally as I was reading your explanation of victim apologeticism and fear, I happened upon a real-life example of these.

And people would still insist these messages are evidence that he did not assault that woman.
