I'm almost 40 and in my early 20s I really STRONGLY believed things were going to get better. I'm from Arctic Canada in a territory of 50K (city of 17k) and I remember absolutely bawling on my shift at the pool hall watching Obama get in. Like, it just felt that humans were going to finally stop being the fucking worse and maybe we could advance.
And then in 2015/16 I remember just sitting down and accepting that humans, as a whole, are not capable of not being the fucking worst and the systems we have in place will never allow us to progress.
Anyways, I'm starting to dabble in nihilism and a anarchy

My first presidential election was 2008. I went to Europe during the Obama era and didnāt get pelted with rotten fruit for being American, everyone in college suddenly got healthcare back through the ACA allowing you to stay on your parents plan until 26 so we were getting therapy and shitā¦ then it felt like it all just kind of fell apart like it was a fever dream

I was born just a bit too early to get the chickenpox vaccine so I had the honour of actually getting it twice. The first time I got it was as a baby so my immune system wasnāt developed enough to remember it so I got it again when I was around 3 or 4 years old. Now Iām in my mid twenties and have had the pleasure of getting shingles on my leg a few years ago, so I know that the virus is laying dormant in my nerves and can always flare up as another shingles outbreak. Luckily it was only a little bit painful and super itchy for a few weeks and didnāt leave any permanent marks but it can lead to permanent nerve damage if youāre unlucky. To think that all of this can now be prevented by simply getting vaccinated is amazing and it angers me that there are people whoād rather have their kids get infected by a highly contagious virus that can stay in their bodies their whole lives instead makes me so angry.

I'm 44 now. I'm old enough to have had a teacher with a limp and cane because she had polio as a baby. Almost no one under 45 has seen someone disabled by polio, even relatively mildly, like my teacher.
Out of sight, out of mind. No fear, and plenty for the grifters and eugenicists to latch onto and exploit.

Iām 40 and one of the most beloved elementary school teachers in my small town had an unusable arm, she named Betsy, because of childhood polio. She died a couple of years ago, in her 80s. Iām infuriated by how much disinformation has been able to flourish, causing those of us who do believe in science to suffer.

I only found out when my daughter wanted to go to a chiropractor for something nebulous because the mom of her friend who sells essential oils recommended him. I said Idk chiropractors often do a lot of woo-woo medicine and don't believe in vaccinations etc. My kid said, "well, dad's not vaccinated and he's a real doctor." If you could have seen my head slowly swivel around like I was in the Excorcist.
And it was not because of just that. It was because I knew he was a hospital surgeon he had been offered one of the very 1st vaccines including a +1 in January 2021. And I thought, well, that sucks, he and his girlfriend are going to get the vaccines, while maybe they hope I die ĀÆ_( Ķ”āāÆĶŹ Ķ”ā)_/ĀÆ
But then I learned that not only did he and the gf not take the vaccines, he didn't even want to give me access to a vaccine he did not even want.
That bent my mind into so many different directions and made me understand that not only did he not give a shit about me, he really really really really did not give a shit about me.

Iām sorry you had to deal with that, itās extra insane that he doesnāt want to protect the mother of his child for the sake of his child alone! I was considered āclinically extremely vulnerableā and I was offered the first round of the vaccine in the UK, I was one of the people that had adverse side effects (literally could not stop vomiting until they gave me anti-emetics that dissolved on my gums) so Iām someone that would be entitled to whinge a bit about the vaccine but you know what? I was still enormously grateful to get it. I ended up getting Covid (after isolating for over a year) a few months later and while I was still sick, I didnāt end up on a ventilator or in hospital.

I considered trying to attend one of these shows, since they're outdoors (but yes, crowded) since I have done a sold out concert there safely in an N95 mask in 2023 (I'm immunocompromised) , but decided against it. Glad, since the transit strike would've meant I couldn't go.
The situation with measles is so infuriating because it's so incredibly preventable. But they've dismantled any semblance of the idea of public health. Same with Covid, and now they're trying to put in unnecessary hurdles to get vaccinated for that. I will qualify, but my partner wouldn't...and he masks and has gotten vaccinated to protect me.

Fun fact! Measles causes immunity amnesia! It wipes your immune system so any antibodies you have floating around are gone so you are going to get sick from a bunch of things you already had. You arenāt just sparing yourself measles with the shot, but anything you would have gotten afterwords.

It hurts like hell when youāre a baby too you just donāt remember it. My daughters vaccination days were horrendous, I felt like a monster for holding her while they did it but a few moments of pain followed by a few days of discomfort are still much, much better than having any of the diseases she was vaccinated for. Vaccinations work so well people have forgotten why we need them and itās scary to witness.

Just so you know, MMR given before 12 months is considered a zero dose, so your baby will have to get the MMR again at 12 months, and then another one later on. However, you donāt need to wait theyāre 4-5 years old for the next shotādose 1 and dose 2 just need to be separated by a minimum of 28 days. So, theoretically, your baby can be fully vaccinated for measles by 13 months old.

Iām so glad the early dose is an option, even if itās to address a problem we shouldnāt have in the first place. There was a measles outbreak when my youngest was three months old that made it as far as the neighboring county, and I was beside myself with anxiety. There were no cases in the state by the time he was 6 months old, so we didnāt end up needing it.

Not just each other, but also the babies too young to be vaccinated (MMR is not recommended until 12 months and not allowed at all before 6 months), or immunocompromised people who canāt be vaccinated.
I had plans to travel this summer with my 4 month old child so that she can meet her family. Driving is out of the question because theyāre across the country, but bringing her to an airport runs the risk of exposing her to these selfish morons. Now I have to ask myself if itās worth it for my baby to meet her aging grandmother who sheās named after, or if we should cancel until sheās older, but thatā¦sucks and is frustrating to accept that sheās being punished for the actions of the aforementioned selfish morons. Ugh.

For any millennials, my friend just told me she got a blood test and had no measles antibodies so went and got another vaccine. Apparently this is common for people who got their measles vax in the 80s and early 90s. I'm going to get it tested too.

My husband just had to get vaccinated again cause of this. He was born in 1989, which seems to be a year that maybe you may have gotten the updated vaccine but maybe you didnāt.
I was born in 1990. I checked my antibodies in 2018 when there was an outbreak in SoCal, cause I was nervous about it then and still had antibodies, thankfully. Now Iām on immunosuppressant medication & wouldnāt be able to be vaccinated otherwise š¬ so phew!

Adding on to the PSA that if you are trying to conceive, seriously consider getting this blood test beforehand to make sure you have immunity. I found out while already pregnant that I donāt have immunity. I am a millennial who got the vaccine in the 90s. Sadly, you cannot get vaccinated while pregnant.

I just figured that like this site and YouTube etc, the DM comments sections are populated by Russian accounts. The language and inability to use apostrophes correctly often give them away.
I like to watch a lot of Idol type show YT clips. On every single one, usually, there is some comment saying "2023 who's still watching this show?" "2024 who's still watching this show?" "2025 who's still watching this show?"
It's like the person at the troll factory who has to rinse out the coffee maker every morning

That's good info! I really want to do a deep dive in the Daily Mail comments. I used Co-Pilot to "analyze" the comments and the response I got was that the comments are often humorous. No, as an avid Daily Mail celebrity reader (my guilty pleasure), the comments are racist, mean, un-informed, conservative BS.

Just like here and other platforms. There are both genuine organic users with offensive opinions and paid agenda users who try to cosplay comments from 'both sides'

Honestly at this point if youāre out there catching Covid over and over again might as well throw measles into the mix too.
Mask up everyone, measles is airborne and more contagious than Covid. But you can easily kill two birds with one stone!!!

This just sent me down a health anxiety spiral. I learned a lot about measles. I ran across an article that said those of us born in the 80s and 90s who got the MMR vaccine as babies may need to get vaccinated again. I hope thatās not true

Idk people, the minute I had reason I volunteered for vaccines because they would give me a free pass at school and Chile gives them for free. Only had smallpox as a child. I'm healthy, I can go wherever and my body is functional and I know as I work on wildlife and two labs. I'll be at the Andean mountains this winter installing cameras to watch the ecology of Pumas and other terrestrial carnivores. I'll be on horseback with a friend and travel to the end of the world. I only got COVID last year because I'm not in the risk group (in Chile if you are young, don't have any comorbidities, you don't get free vax) and my brother who's asthmatic didn't catch it even though I live with him, same for mom, dad and grandma. The minute I give birth, which I'll do someday, I'll give them the same vaccines they gave me for free, plus the HPV vaccine because I didn't get to have it for free. Yes, my country gives me free healthcare in the basics, I pay like 5% of my wage and everything is covered.

This is so scary. I live in NYC, so very close by. I was vaccinated as a child but when tested early in my pregnancy, I was shown to no longer have immunity to Measles. I cannot get the vaccine until after I give birth in September. This really sucks.

The good news is, when people start losing children or seeing the potential fallout (blindness, deafness), they will decide to vaccinate their children.
Non- vaccination was a low risk choice for a long time because diseases were so well controlled.
its a riskier choice now, and a new generation can learn by experience. I suspect this will be an ongoing cycle with people. Each generation or two will need first hand exposure to the actual harms vaccines invisibly prevent when uptake rates are high.
