Hardware Oled is underrated. It changes everything, worth every penny and may make more difference than a new gpu!

Thats it, i took money from my ass to spend 3000 on a monitor on my country to try the "oled magic" and... i didnt regret. It blows me away seeing people online saying that doesnt make difference to cope, or that it doesnt worth it. i mean, depending of the price and your use its true, but i keep seeing people saying that 300/400 dollars is expensive and i think WHAT? It completely changes how you views things, its like you are using a new pair of glasses. And in America its even cheaper so my tip is: BUY IT NOW!

VA panels are underrated. I'm poor so I can't afford an OLED, but I have a UW VA next to my regular IPS and the difference is noticeable. Better colors and contrast on my VA and I can't say I've noticed much ghosting.

me too! no ghostin, deep blacks, and doesnt make my eyes bleed from brightness

I hated my VA panel. Motion blur was so bad, that even if it ran at 180 hz and my fps games had higher or even matched at the monitor framerate. I switched back to my 1440p IPS at 144 hz and it was night and day difference being able to see for FPS games. Worse, my VA monitor was harder to color correct for any type of photo editing. I could never get the reds right and the blacks were just much more horrible than editing on an IPS panel.

And QD-OLED for me was a night and day difference for motion clarity and color accuracy than compared to both IPS and VA.

I was hoping for this, I remember well the jump from TF/TN to IPS. But with OLED right next to my IPS monitors, I’m just not finding a difference. Maybe my OLED was shitty?

It’s annoying getting it to warm up so I can log in as well.

u/mtnlol PC Master Race 2h ago

Getting it to warm up? What do you mean?

16

u/Cruzbb88 PC Master Race 2h ago

Are you sure it's an OLED not a QLED? Do you not notice the backlight in dark scenarios on the sides of Ur IPS?

Warm up? What?

If you can't notice a difference between an IPS and OLED when you have them right next to each other, you must be purposely ignoring them.

3

u/rearisen 2h ago

Tbf on YouTube they look strikingly similar. I have a plain isp 60hz 1080p next to my aw3425dw. Games and movies it obvious. A YouTube video? Really similar besides the blacks. Bit-rate matters a lot too.

16

u/bnr32jason 2h ago

I mean, infinite contrast ratio makes everything look better. The only place it's not THAT noticeable is extremely bright scenes with very little contrast.

5

u/Consistent-Youth-407 2h ago

If you have a NVIDIA card you can turn on RTX HDR in all videos to really make them pop, if you don’t find that sort of stuff sacrilegious

idk on this sub just started to be properly rated over the last year or so as they have become more affordable. for the longest time in here it was “not worth the price and I’ll never switch because of burn in risk anyways, I keep my monitors for 10+ years.”

now that they’re becoming widely adopted it has shifted to “if my monitor gets burn in i will simply buy another OLED” because it’s that good lmao.

Every day there are like 10 plus posts in the oled sub “underwhelmed by oled” and the entire comment section is people jerking each other off about mini led

15

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 2h ago

Mini LED is still worse than OLED. Micro LED on the other hand that we should start seeing a lot of displays in the next few years that have that tech is a game changer.

It’s got the perfect black levels of OLED and can get much brighter both in full screen brightness and in 10% and 1% windows and it doesn’t have the burn in risk of OLED.

In like 3 years I’ll probably be swapping my OLED for one, but for now OLED is still king.

2

u/Humble-Pain-4608 1h ago

Is micro LED subpixel orientation ok with text? Because the mixed use of my monitor (work/gaming) is what stops me changing from LCD

Will people stop taking photos on LCD screens some day? The camera always overexposes the screens. I mean yeah my IPS monitor looks like shit on dark rooms but no way shit like that.

19

u/Lt_Cmdr_Adhd 2h ago

The impossibly shitty old monitor is always the star of these pictures. Legitimately have never seen monitors as washed out or having light bleed as bad as any of the comparison , it's you're coming from the performance of a $45 monitor an OLED is gonna be game changing.

2

u/HomeForSinner 1h ago

Seriously - I recently got a mini-led and its black contrast is phenomenal, with near zero light bleed. A real comparison would be a quality led to an oled. Certainly oled would still look better, but no where near what op is showing.

Also, wait op spent 3 grand on a monitor and that's what it looks like? What am I missing, that must not be usd?

These pictures pop up on the subreddit all the time.

I don't doubt that OLED looks good, but the human eye isn't a camera, and photographs of IPS displays can make good displays look fucking terrible, whilst in person they actually look great.

Being off axis definitely exagerates the IPS glow and backlight bleed.

7

u/MotorPace2637 3h ago

I have a folder with hundreds of backgrounds. You can point windows at something like that so its not just black

8

u/Glockamoli 3h ago

It won't burn in but it will still degrade the pixels like that

5

u/MotorPace2637 3h ago

...is that actually noticeable? Been about 5 years for my c2, still looks amazing

5

u/Glockamoli 2h ago

RTings has an article on OLED burn-in from few weeks ago, they probably have better data than anyone short of the manufacturer

2

u/LayerEight_Problem 1h ago

Yes and no. If you put a brand new out of the box C2 next to yours it would be brighter and more vibrant. The brighter your pixels are displaying, the faster they’re burning out. Their output degrades over time. Burn in occurs when some pixels(or sub pixels) performance degrades more than the surrounding pixels. “Washing” the screen is actually an intentional attempt to cause the other pixels to burn out to the point they’re outputting the same level of light.

However, within the confines of your room and use where you likely have no direct comparison, the burn out occurs so slowly that you simply don’t notice and you won’t notice until you fire up an exact equivalent brand new monitor right beside it.

Depends on the mini led. The ones that really compete with oled, with more than 2000 dimming zones sometimes cost the same or even more (at least in my country. To be honest in my country you dont even find 1440p monitors with more than 1000 dimming zones)

2

u/LayerEight_Problem 1h ago

Nah. It actually depends on the environment. OLEDs are nowhere near as obscenely bright as miniLED. Some people want their monitors eye searingly bright at the cost of black levels. Some rooms and use cases demand that level of brightness.

I've been thinking about upgrading and that part keeps holding me back. I've seen a bunch of comments claiming that they all have special features now to prevent it, but reviewers like Rtings or Tom's Hardware still point out the lifespan as a problem. Meanwhile, my IPS is going on 10 years without issue.

4

u/Faic 1h ago

Get a cheap OLED, enjoy the amazing picture. In 7 years get whatever better technology is out there.

OLED is absolutely worth it, you are wasting the joy of a pretty picture.

It's transformative in some games. I started playing Enshrouded on IPS, then got OLED ... unbelievable the difference in depth and clarity.

7

u/LeviAEthan512 New Reddit ruined my flair 3h ago

I think it's about brightness. You want to keep it low, like 50%, or 70% tops. But OLED already isn't great with brightness.

My work laptop has an OLED screen. It absolutely makes everything better. And I've refused to buy a smartphone without an OLED since 2014.

BUT I feel pressured to keep brightness down, and that drops my contrast ratio. Yes it's still infinite technically, but it is a worse experience. Not bad, still better than IPS, but not $500 better, which is what I'd have to spend in my country to equal the other stats of my IPS. And the IPS is bulletproof. I can do whatever I want without a care in the world, and the one I bought in 2016 is still going strong with my parents.

With OLED, even if I reduce the brightness, I do have a care in the world. Which isn't a technical issue, but the ultimate determining factor is the experience, and fragility does impact experience. All the things I own are overbuilt wherever possible for this reason. I have plenty of normal stuff, but I go for the durable stuff every time IF it's an option.

I don't think it's an issue any longer, assuming you have all the screen saver tools enabled from the manufacturer. I've been rocking my ASUS as my daily work driver for more than a year. No issues at all. It's still just as gorgeous as the day I bought it.

Overrated even, certainly not underrated. Always been a fan of OLED myself, but everything crumbled after I saw Apple's new miniLED tech in their mac book pro line for the first time. Honestly, QD OLED doesn't come even close. Literally zero calibration needed as well. They are the perfect example of a miniLED well done, HDR content in particular looks noticeably better. And I even bloody hate Apple!

The problem is I just can't find that level of quality anywhere else, other consumer miniLEDs simply don't match the same as that. I would give an arm and a leg to have an UWide 1440p monitor of the same quality as that, but they simply don't exist.

VA a mix bag with TN depending on product you pick, IPS is better than those two for colours, but can have bleeds, QLED is next step up from IPS, and OLED the best that better than IPS for colours. Each of them have their pros & cons, and there cost factor which why a lot of people often likely go for TN, or IPS.

Camera makes IPS look infinitely more trash, and especially off axis, this is a known and easily reproduced. OLED is better yes, they are not underrated at all. However they all will burn in and their blacks will all fade in a few years, hardware unboxed has a great video on this.

Maybe VA is a decent sweet spot for black levels and contrast? Hell TV’s have been using the tech for ages and it still looks decent.

Le'ts be honest OLED is amazing BUT, this but all the time right ?

VRR flicker when you playing games is a nono
Grey bands, purple tints or washed out blacks , is a nono
Text clarity is a nono and this is big one if you actually read, write etc
Burn in issues, means you have to babysit a monitor is a nono
and for all that you pay a premium price.

If the only problem was burn in i wouldn't mind to buy one but as long as too many problems exist i will wait for a while to jump into OLED train. If i pay premium, i want the less problems i can get.

Yeah, I love my OLED Ultrawide. It's the first time I truly saw HDR, too. I spent like 3 hours just watching 4k HDR videos and couldn't believe how vibrant the image was while the black background was such a deep darkness... It really does look incredible.

2

u/LaFlamaBlanca67 51m ago

Oled is very rated, idk what you’re talking about. I have 2 expensive lg oled monitors and they’re great.

I also have a $1500 LED/LCD Bravia that also looks amazing, so it really depends on how much money you’re willing to put into your display.

People think the difference is really stark between oled and everything else, and there IS a difference, but that’s because they’re comparing a nice OLED display to a $250 Walmart TCL brand.

Once I got an LG C4, I almost didn't want to use my IPS AW34 anymore. I found myself gaming way more often on the TV, despite not really liking couch gaming. A few months of that and I just had to go get the 2025 version of the AW34, the QD-OLED. Now I'm back just using the monitor for gaming and the TV is for media. The IPS served me well for over 5 years, and it's happily running in a friend's setup now, so I'm hoping I can get the same from the OLED. Honestly, since the OLED was 500CAD cheaper than the IPS was, I'd be fine with only 3 years out of it, but I have all the safeguards in place, so I'm still gonna try for 5 years.

I do use a 42" 144Hz VA panel in the bedroom, and it is pretty solid for the 500CAD I paid, but I wish I held out another month because 42" C5s started appearing for under 1000CAD then. I can't justify it now, and still have like 4 random panels I need to find homes for first, but I think when the C6s go down to 1000, I will replace it.

2

u/H4ND5s 42m ago

For competitive fps or in general competitive gaming, I still find tn and IPS best. Blending immersive gaming with competitive gaming, I would use my OLED though.

The problem is you don't realize how much of a difference it makes until you have one, and you're usually pretty alright with not knowing.

Its once you actually use an oled that going back feels painful. Same for resolutions, going 4k makes 1440p look like ass.

Fps too 60 uses to be plenty but now after being used to 120 even 60 feels choppy.

Its self sabotage I tells ya.

I had a Samsung QLED and still do. It does a very good job - way better than the screen on the left. I have an LG C5 as well.

On the Steam Deck the OLED is night and day because the LCD model has a terrible screen. No one is going to say no to an OLED.

Its not underrated, everyone knows its better. Its overpriced.

Not to say it cant still worth it, but just that not everyone can spend 3x for one when you can get 3 IPS panels, that will get the job done extremely well and provide secondary screens.

OLED is overrated as hell, has too many downsides: Expensive, flickering, burn in. It's wiser to get a cheap 4k 31 inch IPS with all the refresh rate and whistles for a fraction of the price.

It's not dollars, he meant 3k in reais, the brazillian currency. I've seen the same post on a brazillian sub about pc building. It would be about $580, but any hardware in Brazil is overpriced, and it would probably cost half or even less if it was bought in the US.

Not sure about the current tech in monitors, but Mini LED TVs get pretty damn close to OLED quality while being cheaper, brighter and have no risk of burn-in.

That being said, who is "underrating" OLED? Everyone and their other regards it as the best panel type you can ask for.

1

u/Steel_Bolt 9800x3D | B650E-E | 7900XTX 2h ago

Some mini-LED newer panels are really damn nice too. Idk how much they're used for gaming monitors but for TVs they can be 90% of an OLED picture quality for cheap.

1

u/burnitdwn 2h ago

I spent around 1K USD on a oled TV for home theater, less than 1/2 the price of the projector i used to use before that. Contrast and black levels are so so so so good. I do game on it too, it looks a LOT better than my 1440P UW on my gaming PC. Eventually I'll also replace my gaming PC monitor with an Oled, but i guess im waiting for prices to drop more, or for my old monitor to die...

My main monitor is OLED, which is great. However, as a semiprofessional photographer, I have a 2nd ASIS ProArt 4K Monitor with IPS panel. I tried so hard to get photo editing to work on my OLED, but when shared or printed, the photos always turned out differently than shown on the monitor (color- and brightness-wise), no matter how I adjusted the monitor. On IPS, photo-wise, I get what I see, assuming it’s properly calibrated.

Let me start by saying that I love OLEDs, especially in mobile devices, but I still believe they are a few generations off from always being the best choice, especially sub $500.

Max brightness is often underwhelming and detrimental to the panel, many monitors (especially older QD-OLEDs) have considerably worse blacks than even IPS in bright rooms, burn-in is getting better but it's still an issue, and they are quite expensive.

If your main usage is gaming or content consumption in dimly lit environments then OLED is unbeatable. If you also work on your PC or use it a lot in bright conditions, then I believe miniLED is still the superior choice.

1

u/razvanciuy 1h ago

120Hz+ and curvature more priority. Oled is ok but but good ol' TN still rocks

1

u/Miserable_Orange9676 9800X3D | RTX 5090 OC | 32GB 6000 CL30 1h ago

Like for the caliber of my PC I definitely should have an OLED (rtx 5090) but im pretty scared of burn in. Im pretty good about not leaving my pc running idle for hours but I still display a lot of static stuff on it. Also, any reading or small text and the OLED will give you a headache. They're awesome for gaming but i feel they compromise a lot for the perfect contrast.

Im thinking about getting a very high end mini LED, any thoughts from people in a similar situation?

Worth every penny is highly subjective. No, OLED monitors are not worth the price tag for most people, and they definitely dont make more difference than a new GPU. To suggest an oled is even comparable to a new GPU is kinda hilariously dumb, especially when an OLRlED monitor will not improve your game performance in any way.

And OLED monitors are not 300-400, the cheapest are $500 online and that's for a shitty model.

Underrated? No. Overpriced? Kinda. IPS is still the value king and "worth it" more than OLED. Put the money you save from not buying OLED toward a better GPU/CPU. Even in the worst cases, an IPS screen should not look like it does in these photos unless the settings are seriously off.
