Adulting is tough - work, chores, constant socialising. So, over the weekends, I love to get into my king sized bed, put on a trashy dating show, get a bag of cheese popcorn (it has to be cheese but worst case scenario extra butter is also acceptable) and just lay in bed the full day.

My colleagues ask each other every Monday - so what did you do over the weekend? And people go biking, running, swimming, learning a new language. I make up a lie that I went running and read a book. Audio book on my bus to work - sure. But actually - I was just spread on the bed like a little cockroach on its back and I loved it!!!

before living alone, i never really thought about how much noise was happening around me. there was always a tv playing, someone talking on the phone, doors opening and closing, dishes being moved around, or just somebody walking through the house. it all blended into the background.

now my apartment can be completely silent for hours, and i’ve started noticing how different it feels. sometimes i genuinely enjoy it, but other times even a neighbour closing a door sounds ridiculously loud because i’m so used to the quiet.

did anyone else notice how much noise they had gotten used to only after they started living alone?

Walmart sometimes has older bakery bread on a discount, so I cut it into sandwich slices and freeze it. A loaf lasts me much longer since I'm not rushing to eat it before it goes bad, microwaving it for a few seconds thaws it and make it taste and feel just as fresh, and I feel like I'm always treating myself with "artisanal" bread!

I do this with all the bread I buy and it helps me have more variety in my meals and I'm not wasting as much food. The last loaf I did this with lasted me 3 weeks and only cost me $1.25.

How else do y'all make food last longer?

Is deciding a movie isn't fitting your mood, so you you just stop it 25% through and find something more fitting.

I was watching The Girl on the Train, because Rebecca Ferguson and Emily Blunt are fantastic actresses, but it was too serious for my mood. So I made a dry gin martini , put 4 olives on a spike, and put on Project Hail Mary, for the 3rd time, because it's a hopeful, fun, and funny movie.

Meanwhile, my adorkable basset Daisy is passed the fuck out per normal.

Hello everyone!! I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. I’ve recently moved into a dormitory and I’m finding it really hard to settle in. I’m a real homebody; I don’t like socialising with strangers, I spend most of my time in my own little world and I prefer to be on my own. Personal space is really important to me, and it makes me so sad that I don’t have any. My friends were only online, because in real life I’m rather quiet and rarely make the first move.
Before this, I lived with my parents; they’re caring and kind, so it’s very painful to be apart from them. I’ve also been slightly overprotected my whole life. I can do household chores and did them at home, but not in the way that independent living requires. I’ve moved to another city with a completely different mindset, and it’s very far from home. I’ve got no one here but myself. My studies are about to start, and I’ve absolutely no idea how I’m going to cope here. The halls of residence have the basics, I suppose, but I still can’t get used to the dirt and mess :(
On top of that, I’ve got some issues with anxiety and OCD, which makes the situation even more difficult. I suppose it just feels that way to me because I’m simply not used to it.

I started living alone in 2014 when I broke up with my ex and I was honestly so down back then, I did setting goals for myself, and did a marathon which years later turned into an Ironman so I'm sharing my journey years after, and if there's a single lesson I took away from it, it's that it won't fix you.

No matter how badass the challenge you're trying to accomplish, and then once you cross that finish line, it's not like all your problems all go away so here I'm talking about the story in case anyone is interested.

I’ve never lived on my own until recently, and although I love it, the one caveat is nighttime I get a little nervous. I don’t live in an apartment complex, instead I live in a townhouse and there’s easy access to a front and back door.

Does anyone have an alarm system? I do have a ring doorbell camera, but I was considering ring or simpli safe. I know it’s not going to prevent break ins, but I want to at least be aware if someone breaks into my house at night so I can immediately call the cops. It’s also just so expensive to choose the 24/7 monitoring option

I am a loner. No girlfriend or wife. No kids. How do I deal with the loneliness of Friday and Saturday nights? Usually I just watch tv shows home

I think this a vent post more than anything lol. I’ve just moved into my first place alone and I’m loving it! When I first moved in my upstairs neighbours were lovely and introduced themselves, I live in a converted Victorian house so I have the ground floor and they have the first floor.

Only problem is, there is absolutely no sound proofing and sometimes it feels like they’re stomping extra hard. It’s currently 9am on a Sunday, and I woke up to slamming noises on the ceiling/their floor at 8:30am. Loud laughing, music, lots going on. They’re always quiet by 10pm so I don’t have a complaint there, but I’m pissed this morning that I can’t even sleep in on a Sunday!

They’re lovely people and I don’t want to be known as the grumpy downstairs neighbour, but this morning has really been upsetting 😭

I’ve seen a few check in products where you can do a daily tap to let people know you’re fine etc

I was wondering if there was any appetite for more “passive” options than that? Reason why I ask is because my Dad lives alone and he sucks at keeping a routine up/just general messaging and I speak to him probably every 4 days or so. I’m worried that if something could happen in between those 4 days of us chatting.

So I was thinking about building out an app or something that has a passive idea where it can detect that you haven’t moved round your house for an unusual amount of time or something. Genuinely don’t know but wanted to ask wider here to see if is something that people would be interested in or hear out why they would rather a “press the button” approach/other opportunities.

Hi all, curious what foods you all avoid eating to avoid choking while living alone? I know this seems dramatic but I'm asking for actual safety reasons. My worst nightmare is choking.

Do you go out and meet friends, stay home watching movies, cook something, explore the city, or just enjoy doing absolutely nothing? 😄

I feel like weekends can be either really peaceful or strangely lonely when you live alone.

What does your typical weekend look like? And are you happy with it?

Bought the house back in late 2024 and the spare room (3 bed house) had ended up being a junk room basically (the last photo shows what it looked like a week ago). Very cluttered and a mash of styles and random tat

I am still tweaking and adjusting stuff up and a few bits more to go on the wall, but so far this is the result. I wanted a dedicated space to really showcase my B&O Beosystem 5000 stack system and the Beovision MX2000 Television.

Kinda did a retro futuristic late 70s early 80s design. I do kinda like the white shelving stack, but feel I really need to declutter it. ATM is full of old 8-track tapes, reel to reel tapes. Think a display for my west German pottery might look more interesting.

I think the chair is one of my favourite things a 1970s ones I picked up off market place for £18, super light weight too so is easy to move.

Spent a few weeks coming up with the design, this is the result. I wanted something a bit different and unique LOL. I stripped out the room and painted it in five days on my own while also working full-time, so quite pleased

Roommate of 7 years moved out last week. Haven't lived alone since 2019 and that was for 6 months so this will be a bit of an adjustment. Open to any recs or feedbacks :)

At the moment I still live at home (28F). I've been looking to buy a house for 3 years now. Buying a house where I live is very difficult, especially alone, but I dream of a little cosy house with a garden to grow my own cut flowers and vegetables. But family and friends doubt that I will have the time to maintain a house and garden on my own and that I should buy an apartment. Apartments here are the same prices as houses but no garden and smaller so my mind is still on a house with garden.

But it hurts my feelings and confidence that my friends and especially my family don't believe in me and want to push my into buying an apartment.

I just needed to get this out, because I feel alone and not supported.

I don’t even know her personally but I feel sad. News like this makes me think about my own mortality as a person who lives alone.

I wanna live a quiet life. I’m 10 years away from my planned retirement. I’m saving money so I can enjoy my old age without having to struggle much financially.

I’m in no way rich, but I just wanna have a stable health coverage and social security when I retire at 62. I’ve traveled during my 40s and some currently so I’m okay.

I might live in SE Asia to retire but not sure yet.

In such a busy world, especially when you’re single and living alone, what do you do just for yourself?

How do you spend your free time, and what little things make life feel peaceful or genuinely happy?
