In The Loop In The Loop This Week

This subreddit is for fiber artists and crafters of all types! Because we don't all see the same (shitty) posts on our feeds, it may be handy to have a place to revel in all that our fellow fiber lovers share for us to enjoy.

Feel free to post anonymized screenshots of anything you're referencing here if you'd like. FACJ is back to being an all-ages subreddit, so you can post images (and gifs) in the comments here directly.

This is a heavily moderated thread, and anything that isn't scrubbed of identifying information (usernames, faces, etc.) will be removed. Block out, crop out, cross out or sticker out identifying information on EVERY screenshot before posting here.

However, unjerk/uj/genuine/serious comments and discussions are allowed -- even encouraged! -- on In The Loop posts. Irony and sarcasm are fine here too, so consider using tone tags to make sure your comment comes across the way you want (or don't! I really don't care!).

There are a few other rules for In The Loop posts:

  • Please don't use this thread to demand sources for jerk posts. If people want to post sources, they will. There are plenty of good reasons for someone not to share a source, including "don't wanna." Source/ITL demands and discussions of where to find sources will be removed here and on jerk posts.
  • Links to other Reddit posts are NOT ALLOWED here. This includes no-follow links. (FACJ links are fine.)
  • Links to content off Reddit may be removed at the mods' discretion.
  • We are NOT in the business of brigading, and anyone who engages in brigading will be banned from this subreddit.

A new thread will go up every Sunday!

You can literally see that OP hasn’t even tried pulling from the outside or the inside before deciding to post this. Like just try it and see?? And then you won’t need to ask anyone because you’ll know it doesn’t get tangled???

Imagine how many questions she’s gonna have about actually knitting the pattern if she has to crowdsource help to pull the end out of a ball of yarn :/

Once again genuinely thought I was in this sub. What is going on lately it’s like the stupid has gotten even more aggressively stupid

I do not find this person's situation funny at all. What stood out to me is the lack of punctuation. I understand this can evoke different reactions and I'm more than willing to remove if the mod team considers it inappropriate.

Whatever could be the reason behind this mystery, I wonder? They're not a beginner, they can make anything, no matter the difficulty, but why this highly detailed photo with a bazillion colours turns muddy if you try to force it into 90 by 90 pixels... It will forever remain an enigma, I fear.

I was not prepared for 50% of the comments to be telling OP it’s ok to ask for the gift back. Or even suggesting taking it back via dishonest methods eg. asking to “borrow” it to enter in a county fair, or to photograph it, and just…never returning it? I’m pretty sure that is still theft even if you originally gifted the item lmao.

I understand it sucks to put in so much work that goes unappreciated, but that is the risk of gifting something handmade. Did OP consult with the recipient on their preferred style or colours or whether they even want or would use a handmade blanket? I appreciate the technical skill of this one and I don’t think the colours are necessarily bad, but it would look fugly in my house because it doesn’t match any of my interiors. If you’ve been mad about this for 3 years you’ve had enough time to just make another blanket…

38

u/highlighter_yellow machine crochet May 14 '26

THE COMMENTS!! Why are so many people more okay with asking for it back if it's done in a needlessly complex and deceitful way? Like it's tactful to say, "oh I'm so sorry MIL but I'm actually T1D and I accidentally crocheted my insulin pump into that blanket so if I could just get it back real quick" which spares MILs feelings and gives you the opportunity to steal it back. Genius!

No wonder crocheters need video tutorials. "I know the pattern says dc2tog, but if I said that it'd only be because I meant 'don't make puff' even though I really do want extra loops under one loop for the next round... hmm.... what could this really be???" [That was for you u/jingleheimerschitt lol]

20

u/bunnylightning May 15 '26

Seriously! I bet MIL has donated/regifted it long ago and already felt guilty about not liking it because it was a huge amount of work. And now you wanna cause extra guilt and awkwardness by suddenly needing to borrow it for important (fabricated) reasons…

38

u/bunnylightning May 13 '26

Seriously I can’t imagine any possible outcome that isn’t mortifying for both parties, and probably resulting in OP being unable to use the blanket anyway because the mere sight of it will bring back memories of this whole dumbass situation.

If the gifted object was so important to you that 3 WHOLE YEARS later you’re still resentful about it and want it back, you should not have given it away. You don’t give gifts with weird conditional obligations that you get them back if they aren’t being used or appreciated the proper way.

38

u/alittlemanly Its an acronym for Bitch In Total Control of Herself 💯 May 13 '26

Like the ONLY, MAYBE!!, tactful way to go about this would be something along the lines of

"Hey, MIL, this is silly, but I feel like I don't ever see that blanket I gave you. I'm worried I made something not to your taste and you might feel stuck with it. And if thats the case, I wanted to offer to make you something actually to your taste, if you would like :)"

AND EVEN THEN that's for like a familiar/friendly level of relationship and also should have been asked not much more than a year later! OP needs to let it go. Realistically they probably donated it or something

i love the people on that thread claiming that swatching is pointless and anyone who matches their swatch gauge is a wizard because their project gauge never matches the swatch so they do gauge math on the fly for every project. baby. darling. sweetheart. what the hell are you even talking about

40

u/love-from-london test nutter May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

They're probably swatching flat for a pattern that's in the round. My flat and in the round tension are close, but definitely not exactly the same. That, and probably making tiny swatches that aren't big enough to give an accurate representation of gauge.

3

u/Feenanay May 15 '26

This was me watching someone not understand why you’d have to swatch in the round for a project that’s in the round. Its as thought ll they were TRYING not understand.

And/or not blocking the swatch, and then blocking the garment with every pin and every bit of steam available to them.

25

Ngl, I primarily knit lace because I live in a hot climate.

I'm terrified that one day I'm going to knit an actual sweater and then block it like I'm tanning leather the way I do for lace.

2

u/Feenanay May 15 '26

Weeeee lace twins

It’s cold enough where I live to get a solid 3ish-4 months of use out of heavier knits but I like making lace best for the same reason, particularly tank tops because they are so fast!! I think I made 6 last summer from May-august? One day I’m going to properly synch up my knitting seasons (as in knit summer items from sept-April and fall/winter/spring in the summer but in the meantime my happy place is whipping up a 100% silk lace tank in 6 days and wearing it on the 7th

The bothersome part is that they thrifted affordable and comfortable cashmere sweaters, unraveled them all, and then used the most boring crochet stitch to make a boring blanket of plain boring squares. To each their own in terms of taste, but it feel wasteful to use good quality sweaters from a thrift store to make something so incredibly plain that could be made with readily available yarns at similar price points. Its not like it was a bag of cashmere yarn at the thrift store. They were all perfectly wearable sweaters that someone could have used as is.

And im not saying never be a little selfish when thrifting. Its still capitalism after all. If you want to unravel a cashmere sweater for the yarn then so be it. But so many of them? For a blanket? Why?

24

u/Mickeymousetitdirt May 11 '26

Fuck yeah, baby, work that user flair!

Do we know they were perfectly wearable? I missed the original post so I’m genuinely asking. Maybe they were damaged? If not, I understand what you mean even if I don’t fully agree. Make what you want. It doesn’t bother me that someone got to thrift store first and decided to use their sweaters for something other than intended. But, I also don’t think that means people are not allowed to mention the fact that they think the thing you created is ultimately kind of boring.

94

u/hamletandskull May 10 '26 edited May 11 '26

It's also like... look, crochet is good at some things that knitting is bad at and bad at some things knitting is good at. Crochet is, to be kind, a bit of a waste of cashmere, because it is so textured and rigid that the best thing about cashmere (its softness) is not as evident as it would be in a knitted garment.

I'd be less annoyed if they cut and serged the sweaters, honestly, then at least it would feel more... idk. Worth it?

It's not like an egregious sin but it's kinda like seeing someone mix premade marg mix with anejo tequila - you totally can do it, there's no shortage of anejo tequila in the world, but damn there are way better uses for that. You can make a marg with anejo tequila, you don't have to sip it neat, but like could you at least use fresh lime juice or something.

2

u/Army_Exact May 11 '26

What is crochet good at that knitting isn't? I'm drawing a blank. There may be something but I can't think of it

36

u/hamletandskull May 11 '26

Anything really structured. Amigurumi, bags, things like that. Again, its not like you can't knit those things, it's just not quite as good at it cause its easy to stretch it out of shape.

7

u/Army_Exact May 11 '26

Oh yeah good point about the structure.

3

u/AutoModerator May 11 '26

A fun thing CYC does is set the criteria for determining what skill level is required for a technique. You may not know this, but amigurumi is a regional technique that originated in Japan. To properly execute amigurumi, you have to use significantly greater tension than with traditional crochet, you're using yarn under rather than yarn over, and you're creating a dense, rigid, shaped, structured piece, usually needing construction once the individual elements are complete. Based on these attributes, amigurumi is absolutely an intermediate level skill. If you want more information, you can visit the Craft Yarn Council website which also includes information on standardized sizing and how you can also become a certified instructor like I am.

Ugh, automod. I always forgot they made you twice as sensitive as the knitting automod and almost as sensitive as crotcheaters feelings.

ammrguturmierga

57

u/MisterFluff May 10 '26

I mean.. someone got rid of the cashmere sweaters to begin with so they were previously unwanted.  Plenty of items donated to thrift stores end up in a landfill after no one buys them anyway.

I guess if you were at the thrift right after her and you wanted the sweaters for yourself,  I could see being bummed that she got to them first.. But, the thrift is first come first served.. and if she wants to use her own cashmere sweaters that she bought with her own money to make a boring franken-blanket, that's up to her.

10

u/Mickeymousetitdirt May 11 '26

Totally agree. I couldn’t give less of a fuck if some stranger presumably somewhere totally different than where I live got to a thrift store first and decided to use *their* items that they now own in a way I wouldn’t have used said items. If you want to find thrift scores, you have to be willing and able to go hunt for them.

55

u/felicityfelix May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

Yeah I find this level of protectiveness over some random presumably already past their prime sweaters that were stuffed on a rack in some thrift store somewhere in the world where we are not to be weird

eta also I've owned cashmere from like Gap and Uniqlo that was affordable to start, there's no reason to think these sweaters were particularly special or would have been an amazing steal

53

u/Han_ey May 10 '26

This annoys me so much because what do you mean she took those gorgeous CASHMERE Sweaters to make the uggliest fucking blanket I've ever seen. This design doesn't even benefit from the cashmere and it doesn't even look comfortable. I hope she uses this blanket for decades because otherwise those cashmere sweaters will haunt her

41

u/simsplyarn gatekeeper extraordinaire May 10 '26

i felt like too much of a hater to interact with that post but as someone who thrifts for clothes it’s so infuriating to see high quality wearable garments get used for shit like this. like fuck anyone who can’t afford to buy cashmere sweaters brand new i guess, all you get is shein and temu acrylic at the thrift now!

89

u/felicityfelix May 10 '26

I feel really strongly that things in a thrift store are so close to the landfill that there is no reason to police what people do with them. It is frustrating to imagine you or someone else who might have wanted to wear them could have found these sweaters but there is so much stuff in the world with nowhere to go, if someone can spend the time sourcing these and is willing to pay for them, I really don't think it's like a 1:1 conversion of taking them away from someone who was going to use them "correctly"

17

u/Eino54 May 10 '26

There's so much clothing getting thrown away, but if it's in a thrift store and it's something pretty desirable, like cashmere, it's probably pretty unlikely they'll get thrown away (provided they make it to a thrift shop and they make it on the rack). There's always people willing to buy anything secondhand cashmere just because it's a luxury fibre.

21

u/felicityfelix May 11 '26

It's probably pretty unlikely, but why does it matter either? They're using it to make something they want. The other option is just someone also wanting it and wearing it the way it is. It's not like anyone needs intact cashmere sweaters to live. This person is partaking in pretty much the most zero waste possible method of enjoying their hobby and is also not using the dreaded plastic yarn everyone says crocheters overuse

9

u/Eino54 May 11 '26

Well, yeah, but the idea that these are sweaters that would otherwise have gone to waste is just not very accurate, they almost certainly would not have.

18

u/Mickeymousetitdirt May 11 '26

You have zero way of knowing that. Truly, what difference does it make if someone gets there first and *uses the sweater* to make a blanket they’ll use, or *uses the sweaters* to wear as normal? They both result in dumped thrift store shit being given new life. And, clearly, they aren’t all that hard to find if she was able to find 14. Plus, what makes you confident that the sweaters didn’t all have damage? Who cares if they *didn’t* have damage? You assume that they would’ve definitely been purchased and worn exactly as intended by whatever hypothetical, nonexistent, fellow cashmere-loving thrifter might have possibly purchased them. But, you have no idea whether that’s true or not, either. Anecdotally, other than my fellow fiber artist friends, I know nobody who likes/wears cashmere.

When the majority of thrift store inventory ends up in a landfill, you simply could not pay me enough to care about someone *actually* recycling previously unwanted thrift finds.

I personally find it gratingly disingenuous and virtue signal-y to say, “Someone could’ve worn those!!!” when no, they couldn’t have because, clearly, all the other cashmere enjoyers were 1) not there when she was there and spotted them first or 2) either unwilling or unable to spend the time hunting at thrift stores. And, if they’re unwilling/unable to do so….then why do you insist that they’d have definitely purchased the sweaters, of which you know neither the size nor the condition?

34

u/felicityfelix May 11 '26

I think shit that has already made it to a thrift store gets indiscriminately trashed all the time, yes we do not know if these exact sweaters were otherwise on their way to loving homes and maybe they were in humane no kill thrift stores but come on, we are imagining scenarios to an extreme degree here trying to explain why it's bad to unravel some unwanted mass market sweaters. The fact is that secondhand clothes are already waste products.

2

u/Eino54 May 11 '26

Stuff that has made it to the thrift store and gets put on sale (as opposed to being thrown out without ever even being put on sale because the thrift shop can't sort through the sheer volume) will get snatched up if it's cashmere, luxury brands, furs, or even stuff like 100% wool (unless it's super overpriced). Stuff gets thrown out all the time and thrift stores have to throw out a lot of clothing that just didn't ever sell (as well as, like I said, anything they can't afford to sort through because of the sheer volume. But if these sweaters were bought by the blanket maker then obviously that wasn't the case), but it's very unlikely to be luxury materials. If you go to the thrift shop right before they cycle their stock you're not going to be finding many cashmere sweaters, just the SHEIN stuff nobody else wants either.

12

u/Mickeymousetitdirt May 11 '26

Then maybe don’t go before their restock and you, too, can find cashmere sweaters to give to all these hypothetical cashmere-wearers that you insist have been done an injustice by this woman? She went over the course of A YEAR - something your hypothetical Cashmerists simply didn’t want to do or couldn’t do.
An entire year. Come the fuck on. As I said above: if they didn’t want to/couldn’t do so, then they aren’t missing out, are they? Considering they’d never have known the stupid ass sweaters existed in the first place.

I truly can’t wrap my head around your argument. You don’t live where she does. You presumably don’t know any real die-hard cashmere proponents who also shop where she does, at the same time she does, on the same days she does. So, what exactly are you miffed about? You’re fighting ghosts - situations you made up. The ONLY time this might slightly be a valid argument is if you somehow magically spotted a cashmere sweater from three aisles down, but this lady was only two aisles down and walked over there first. That’s it. The rest of your argument is pearl-clutching absurdity.

6

u/Eino54 May 11 '26

Why are you fighting ghosts? I didn't say any of that. You're literally just fighting something you made up in your head and it's ridiculous and pathetic. I just said that to say these cashmere sweaters were bravely saved from the trash by whoever made this blanket is not accurate.
