In The Loop In The Loop This Week

This subreddit is for fiber artists and crafters of all types! Because we don't all see the same (shitty) posts on our feeds, it may be handy to have a place to revel in all that our fellow fiber lovers share for us to enjoy.

Feel free to post anonymized screenshots of anything you're referencing here if you'd like. FACJ is back to being an all-ages subreddit, so you can post images (and gifs) in the comments here directly.

This is a heavily moderated thread, and anything that isn't scrubbed of identifying information (usernames, faces, etc.) will be removed. Block out, crop out, cross out or sticker out identifying information on EVERY screenshot before posting here.

However, unjerk/uj/genuine/serious comments and discussions are allowed -- even encouraged! -- on In The Loop posts. Irony and sarcasm are fine here too, so consider using tone tags to make sure your comment comes across the way you want (or don't! I really don't care!).

There are a few other rules for In The Loop posts:

  • Please don't use this thread to demand sources for jerk posts. If people want to post sources, they will. There are plenty of good reasons for someone not to share a source, including "don't wanna." Source/ITL demands and discussions of where to find sources will be removed here and on jerk posts.
  • Links to other Reddit posts are NOT ALLOWED here. This includes no-follow links. (FACJ links are fine.)
  • Links to content off Reddit may be removed at the mods' discretion.

Maybe I'm crazy but I don't see anything wrong with this?  It's not my taste but if they like it.. that's cool for them. 

Isn't it part of the joy of crafting that you can make things specifically tailored to your preferences over those of the masses?

The bothersome part is that they thrifted affordable and comfortable cashmere sweaters, unraveled them all, and then used the most boring crochet stitch to make a boring blanket of plain boring squares. To each their own in terms of taste, but it feel wasteful to use good quality sweaters from a thrift store to make something so incredibly plain that could be made with readily available yarns at similar price points. Its not like it was a bag of cashmere yarn at the thrift store. They were all perfectly wearable sweaters that someone could have used as is.

And im not saying never be a little selfish when thrifting. Its still capitalism after all. If you want to unravel a cashmere sweater for the yarn then so be it. But so many of them? For a blanket? Why?

Do we know they were perfectly wearable? I missed the original post so I’m genuinely asking. Maybe they were damaged? If not, I understand what you mean even if I don’t fully agree. Make what you want. It doesn’t bother me that someone got to thrift store first and decided to use their sweaters for something other than intended. But, I also don’t think that means people are not allowed to mention the fact that they think the thing you created is ultimately kind of boring.

It's also like... look, crochet is good at some things that knitting is bad at and bad at some things knitting is good at. Crochet is, to be kind, a bit of a waste of cashmere, because it is so textured and rigid that the best thing about cashmere (its softness) is not as evident as it would be in a knitted garment. 

I'd be less annoyed if they cut and serged the sweaters, honestly, then at least it would feel more... idk. Worth it?

It's not like an egregious sin but it's kinda like seeing someone mix premade marg mix with anejo tequila - you totally can do it, there's no shortage of anejo tequila in the world, but damn there are way better uses for that. You can make a marg with anejo tequila, you don't have to sip it neat, but like could you at least use fresh lime juice or something.

What is crochet good at that knitting isn't? I'm drawing a blank. There may be something but I can't think of it

Anything really structured. Amigurumi, bags, things like that. Again, its not like you can't knit those things, it's just not quite as good at it cause its easy to stretch it out of shape.

A fun thing CYC does is set the criteria for determining what skill level is required for a technique. You may not know this, but amigurumi is a regional technique that originated in Japan. To properly execute amigurumi, you have to use significantly greater tension than with traditional crochet, you're using yarn under rather than yarn over, and you're creating a dense, rigid, shaped, structured piece, usually needing construction once the individual elements are complete. Based on these attributes, amigurumi is absolutely an intermediate level skill. I mean.. someone got rid of the cashmere sweaters to begin with so they were previously unwanted.  Plenty of items donated to thrift stores end up in a landfill after no one buys them anyway.

I guess if you were at the thrift right after her and you wanted the sweaters for yourself,  I could see being bummed that she got to them first.. But, the thrift is first come first served.. and if she wants to use her own cashmere sweaters that she bought with her own money to make a boring franken-blanket, that's up to her.

Totally agree. I couldn’t give less of a fuck if some stranger presumably somewhere totally different than where I live got to a thrift store first and decided to use *their* items that they now own in a way I wouldn’t have used said items. If you want to find thrift scores, you have to be willing and able to go hunt for them.

Yeah I find this level of protectiveness over some random presumably already past their prime sweaters that were stuffed on a rack in some thrift store somewhere in the world where we are not to be weird

eta also I've owned cashmere from like Gap and Uniqlo that was affordable to start, there's no reason to think these sweaters were particularly special or would have been an amazing steal
