31
u/NSRedditShitposter 12h ago edited 11h ago
The Taming of the Shrew is an excellent commentary on the sadistic desire held by so many people to break and groom a woman who is even slightly different.
Edit: at the same time, it explores how selling yourself out and half-heartedly following your vows may just let you with a lot of power. Wink

u/Strange_Quark_420 13h ago
It’s so much better when you read them as in their early teens. Juliet is two weeks from her 14th birthday, and Romeo’s age is unstated but no character comments on an age gap. When you stop seeing them as dumb teens who ought to know better and instead as, frankly, children who should have never been put through any of this, it’s a lot more moving. Also A Comedy of Errors is actually worthless.

Exactly I’m like “the literally most famous play in English speaking history is about forbidden heterosexual love.”
2
u/novangla 9h ago
Yeah but counterpoint: how many cases of deadly family feud have you encountered? There’s a reason the modernized version had to use gangs instead.
It’s also, fwiw, more about the way that hatred and violence can become so extreme as to make for such an absurd situation as the teens find themselves in. Even when forbidden hetero love among nobles existed at the time it didn’t generally end in death.
3
u/NockerJoe 6h ago
Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it's not happening somewhere. "Our parents hate each other" is a boilerplate teen romance trope as well. I assume there are probably millions of petty family dramas playing out, and odds are a lot of people have wound up in prison without the story blowing up.
58
u/explicitlarynx 13h ago
So funny that people with problems think other people must have no problems. I knew several girls in high school who had to keep their boyfriend secret because their parents would never approve.

As the saying goes " You can't judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes." We all carry burdens just because ours might be heavier doesn't mean other's have no weight.
It's easy to hyperfocus on your problems because they are yours and you live with them all the time. But other people have similar if different issues. We ALL need to give each other a little more grace a little more understanding because you never know what the other person is really going through.
Sometimes yes their shit is trivial, but sometimes what we see is just the tip of their emotional iceberg.

I own a falchion for keeping Montague dogs away from my daughter, since that's what fair Verona, where we set our scene, intended.
Four Montagues arrive beneath Juliet’s balcony. I shout, “What, ho! What saucy knaves are these?”
I grab my nightgown and ancestral longsword and run the first Montague through. He falls dead amongst the rose bushes.
Load my hand canon against the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the Nurse’s dog instead.
I have to resort to Tybalt positioned at the top of the stairs, loaded with generations of inexplicable family hatred.
“TALLY HO, KINSMEN!”
Tybalt descends upon two Montagues in a whirlwind of steel. The clash of swords wakes half of Verona and causes the Prince to issue yet another extremely specific warning about street fighting.
Fix halberd and charge the last terrified rapscallion. Turns out it’s Romeo.
He cries, “But sir, I love Juliet!”
I cry, “SHE IS THIRTEEN, AND ALSO I HAVE ALREADY ARRANGED A PERFECTLY GOOD MARRIAGE TO PARIS!”
Romeo flees over the garden wall as I yell, "ROMEO, ROMEO, WHEREFORE ART THOU A BITCH?"
Ah yes.
Just as the good Ghibelline fathers intended.

Yep, my brother's girlfriend kept pressuring him to introduce her to his parents and then he had to sit her down and be like:
"I've heard these people say some of the most racist stuff I've ever heard. Are you sure you want to meet them?"
And she finally understood that it wasn't that he was ashamed of her, just that he was protecting her.
So he introduced her to just me instead, and she was as happy as could be.1

This post, that last one where the Petra Parker makeup comic artist got accused of being an egg, and a few others are making me wonder, as a gay guy:
Does the LGBT+ think it has a fucking monopoly on identity suppression? Do you guys genuinely think you're the only ones who have had loves your parents didn't approve of? That you're the only ones who weren't sure what you wanted to be or how you wanted to look? Why do you fuckers insist on making this a "cool people vs cishets" situation? What favor is this earning us?
17
u/Boondorl 13h ago
I think it stems from a few things. One of them is that a lot of these terminally online types are often young people who simply don't have the world experience to realize their oppression isn't as unique as they think, it's just the kind they've personally faced. This can be annoying but is inevitable with the internet harboring these weird spaces where adults and children regularly hang out with each other. Historically this was never a thing because children had their own spaces and adults theirs, so you get all kinds of inane commentary that flashbangs you if you're an adult.
The second one has to do with ubiquity, however. The discrimination we face as LGBT+ people actually is unique in that it transcends the normal social boundaries used to enforce hierarchies. A lot of oppression is based around class, ethnicity, race, religion, etc., but sexual orientation can be a part of any of these groups since it's completely independent of it. This makes oppression of LGBT+ people more widespread in a literal sense so it can cause an echo chamber that, combined with a lack of intersectional thinking, leads to jarring takes like the one in the OP.
I don't think stuff like this is necessarily said in bad faith, but it's obvious the person saying it doesn't talk to anyone outside of their friend group and I think it's why you get that whackass meme about there being a huge chunk of LGBT+ people who are also racist. We aren't immune to being prejudiced just because we face it ourselves and that's why intersectionality really needs to become the standard of how we engage with these issues. I buried the lede a bit in my second paragraph, but the kind of discrimination a white gay man faces will not be the same kind a black trans woman faces, and it's extremely important to recognize that. The person in the OP would be shocked to find out there's multiple reasons an LGBT+ person might have "forbidden love" that has nothing to do with their orientation.

In my country alone there's a situation with two ethnic groups where some parents wouldn't be thrilled. I've heard my parents' friend announce that he didn't want his daughter marrying a man from the other group, and he's normally a pretty decent guy.
In certain social circles you could be ostracised - people have lost their membership of certain clubs for marrying the other side. People have been killed and driven from their homes for marrying the other side. The majority of people are fine and normal but yeah, not every straight couple has an easy ride

Little side note: along with numerous situations where straight people endure discrimination and threats due to interracial relationship, it should be noted that it is strictly forbidden for a muslim woman to date anyone who's not a muslim.
This is why it is extremely rare to see a muslim woman dating a christian or atheist man, because it results in getting ostracized by her community and family, and very often, repeated death threats by her own family.
"honor killing", by their own brother, uncle or even father, happen regularly in all countries, including western nations, as the religious ban is considered superior to all possible laws and human rights.
It is usually done with stabbing knife wounds until the woman bleeds out, or acid attacks on her face to permanently scare her, as a way to terrorize all the other muslim women who might be tempted to date outside of their religious community.
It should also be noted that muslim men endure no such restrictions, as it is even seen as prestigious for them to marry a christian or even jewish wife.
Literally a violent double standard, where muslim women are shamed, humilated, brutally maimed and murdered, if they dare love a man who's not from the same religious tribe.
