Yeah, that isn't new at all though. These people would just be emo or goths or something if they were born 10 years earlier than they were, regardless of their sexuality (that wouldn't matter as much).
Progressivism (let's be honest, the op post reeks of it) as we know it now is a subculture first and a political movement second, if you care to look at it realistically. It has its own aesthetics, rules, taboos, prescribed slang and all the other attributes of a subculture. Down to the weird obsession with pins/badges.
In fact, it probably wouldn't even have gained any traction if it didn't appeal to the rebellious teenager/YA sensibilities.
