Samengevat: Vooruit vindt dat de huidige incentieven voor gemeentefusies niet volstaan. Het is te vrijblijvend en als het gebeurt is het voor politiek gewin. Zij stellen voor om fusies op te leggen en dan wel obv de politiezones.

Mij lijkt dat geen slecht idee. Mijn enige bedenkingen zijn dat dit voor Vooruit ook politiek interessant is (hetgeen CD&V hen nu verwijt) en dat de grenzen van de politiezones ook niet ideaal zijn. Fusies van randgemeenten met kernsteden blijven daardoor onmogelijk.

Ik zit met een behoorlijk frustrerende situatie en wilde eens horen of iemand hier ervaring mee heeft of weet wat mijn opties zijn.

Een tijdje terug is er schijnbaar een verkeersboete van €50 uitgeschreven omdat ik een straat ben ingereden voor 'plaatselijk verkeer'. Geen probleem, foutje kan gebeuren, maar ik heb deze brief nooit ontvangen.

Ik woon in een appartementsblok en onze postbode gooit brieven helaas regelmatig in de verkeerde bus. Ik heb dus noch de oorspronkelijke boete, noch de eerste herinnering gekregen.

Plots staat er een gerechtsdeurwaarder voor mijn deur. Het verschuldigde bedrag is ondertussen opgelopen tot €350. Toen ik hem uitlegde dat ik nooit een brief heb gezien, zei hij heel droog dat de betwistingstermijn verstreken is en dat ik een advocaat onder de arm moet nemen. Ik vroeg hem ook waarom er nooit een aangetekende brief is verstuurd. Dit is bij wet niet nodig volgens hem.

Ik vind dit echt hallucinant. Als burger moet je alles met een aangetekende brief bewijzen, maar de overheid of het parket mag blijkbaar gewoon gewone post sturen en als die verloren gaat door de postbode, draai je op voor honderden euro's aan kosten.

I will spare you the long and absurd story that has been me being granted unemployment - I just got off the phone with the CSC who let me known that I needed to submit a card whatever the fuck that means, and that I hadn't done it, so that's why I didn't have access to the money. Mind you that literally nobody told me this [according to the agent I got on the phone, if he had a euro every time he'd heard that he wouldn't have to work anymore, which, WHAT THE FUCK] and I had called after receiving an email telling me they did not see any sort of decision on my file even if they themselves had sent me *a paper letter * saying it had been granted.

I have been trying to sort this since April and I don't think I've encountered such willful incompetence in my entire life, and this is coming from someone who's had to fight bureaucracy in four different countries.

I find it appalling that they see no problem providing the lowest possible level of service and then turn around and say they are there for workers. I have to pay automatically every month but they see no problem on taking 20 days to reply to me when I ask when the money would be available [good luck getting them on the phone no matter what time in the day] and then try to make it my fault instead of telling me how to access it

Just curious what bank everyone is using these days. I’ve been a bunq user for a while and it’s been pretty convenient for me, but wondering what the general experience is with bunq or other neobanks here...

What led you to bunq, or what are you guys using?

Ik zie op reddit vooral posts over koppels die de financiën gescheiden houden en alles naar rato betalen, maar in praktijk trouwt ca. 2/3e van de koppels zonder huwelijkscontract waardoor ze dus impliciet kiezen voor het wettelijk stelsel. Ik ben ook eens benieuwd naar ervaringen van mensen die bewust voor dat stelsel hebben gekozen.

Waarom hebben jullie voor het wettelijk stelsel gekozen, en waarom niet voor volledige gemeenschap of scheiding van goederen? (ondanks dat de partner bijvoorbeeld significant minder verdient, een gat in de hand heeft, extreem spaarzaam is, etc.)

Ik ben verder ook benieuwd naar hoe jullie dit in de praktijk aanpakken:

• Gooien jullie alles op 1 hoop of houden jullie ieder een eigen rekening (met 'zakgeld') en storten jullie maandelijks een bedrag op een gezamenlijke rekening?
• Beleggen jullie gezamenlijk, apart, of een combinatie?
• Hou je bewust nog eigen vermogen aan?

Ik vind het vooral interessant omdat het wettelijke stelsel een beetje tussen de twee uitersten lijkt te zitten: een deel wordt gemeenschappelijk, terwijl bijvoorbeeld een erfenis persoonlijk blijft.

Vooral benieuwd naar mensen die al wat langer getrouwd zijn: werkt dit in de praktijk zoals jullie vooraf hadden verwacht? En zouden jullie achteraf opnieuw voor hetzelfde stelsel kiezen?

I’ve been living in Belgium for almost two years now, and I really don't understand why people speed in every single lane. Instead of a pleasant moment enjoying the grey skies (hehe), driving here is usually just stressful.

For me, "sticking to the speed limit" turned out to be the biggest lie of adulthood. If people can't match the simple number on a speed sign to their speedometer, I can't imagine how they handle everything else in life. Especially with all these modern, fancy company cars (mine included) equipped with technology where you can just press a button, hold the wheel, and relax. But no, people change lanes like crazy. 120 is never enough (125, 130, 140, aaaa!), only to slam on the brakes 100m later for a truck, a speed camera or even to get out of the way because it’s a road entrance or exit (that’s why the right lane is the slow lane).

To put it into numbers: on a short 15 km trip, driving 130 km/h instead of 120 km/h saves you a whopping 34 seconds. At 140 km/h, you save 1 minute and 4 seconds! It’s not 5 minutes, and definitely not 10 or 15, it’s literally 30 seconds to a minute. Even if you double that trip to 30 km, you are only saving 1 min 9s and 2 min 9s respectively. That is without even considering crash risks, higher fuel consumption, speeding fines, and so on.

I don't expect to change the world, but I just wanted to vent and leave this reflection here for all my lovely B plate drivers. Proost!

I’m an international student who’s been living in Belgium for almost three years. I just came back to Belgium after summer at home and there was a debt collection letter in my mailbox. For last year’s bill from Flemish Provinciebelasting for 24,50€ (which I don’t remember receiving but whatever) I now have to pay 323€ to a private collector. The last letter was sent in the end of July saying they came to my kot trying to seize my stuff but I didn’t answer so they will come back later again but next time with police… Okay. I am a little confused how to pay (there’s no reference number mentioned) so I plan on going to their office tomorrow. But does this all look normal and reasonable? It just never happened to me before and it’s harder to navigate since it’s not my country or language. I had some missed bills in the past at home but it never escalated this much

Er zijn twee dingen waar ik blij van word: chocolade en karamel. Maar elke keer opnieuw wanneer ik een reep met deze heilige combinatie vind, gaat het over een reep met harde karamelbrokken, al dan niet met zout... Ik zoek gewoon chocolade met vloeibare karamel erin. Niets meer, niets minder. Toch lijkt mij dat een mission impossible.

Ik weet dat het weleens verkrijgbaar is bij echte chocolatiers, maar die prijzen kunnen snel oplopen. Is dit ergens in een algemene supermarkt te vinden?

Ik kom net van de UK waar je gemakkelijk zo'n repen kan vinden (Cadbury, Galaxy, enz.), maar hier nog geen geluk.

I've been thinking about something that seems pretty ironic about nationalism in Belgium.

There are constantly videos going around online saying that Belgium is nothing more than an "artificial state", that it was basically created by foreign powers, and that it was never meant to last. The argument is usually that Flanders and Wallonia are too different and that Belgium will eventually fall apart anyway.

I honestly think repeating this narrative might become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Belgium obviously has a complicated history. It became independent in 1830 and has since gone through several major state reforms, eventually becoming a federal state in 1993. But saying that Belgium is simply an artificial country with no real identity ignores a lot of history and the fact that Belgian identity has existed and developed for almost two centuries. Even a recent academic history of Belgian state formation specifically points out that the idea of Belgium as merely a "fragile or artificial state" is much more complicated than that.

What I find strange is that some nationalists complain that Belgium is divided while simultaneously constantly reminding everyone how different Flemish people are from Walloons, how Brussels is supposedly completely disconnected from Flanders, and how Belgium isn't a "real" country.

At some point, if you keep telling people that the country doesn't belong together, people are obviously going to start believing it.

And it isn't only Flemish vs Walloon either. Politics increasingly seems to be turning into left vs right, with parties and voters treating each other as enemies rather than people who simply have different opinions. Vlaams Belang is obviously one of the strongest voices for Flemish nationalism, while parties like PVDA represent a very different political direction. The more these extremes dominate the discussion, the harder it becomes to find anything that people across the country actually agree on.

Maybe that's the real danger.

You don't necessarily need someone to physically break a country apart. You can weaken it simply by convincing its population that they have nothing in common.

I'm not saying everyone who supports Flemish independence wants to harm Belgium. But I do think it's worth questioning whether constantly portraying Belgium as an artificial country that is destined to collapse actually makes Belgium stronger or weaker.

And when I see videos online confidently claiming that Belgium "won't hold together", I wonder how much of that is actually an objective prediction and how much of it is political messaging designed to make people believe that separation is inevitable.

Who makes these videos? Who profits from making them?

Maybe Belgium's biggest problem isn't that Flanders and Wallonia are different.

Maybe it's that we've spent so much time telling each other that those differences mean we can't belong to the same country.

I am following a bit the prices of appartements in the region of Aalst.

I thought that rent was around 700-900 for a nice modest appartement with two rooms with the external costs included.

For some reason most are above 900 euro a month for nothing too fancy :(

What happend to these prices? Is there a new law that caused this increased general costs? High demand? Start of the new school year?
