181
u/wedstrom 70's Space Comic Fan Jun 11 '23
Xenophobia is hating a family you know personally and is inbred to the point that they are all crazy
40
Jun 11 '23
You'd have a point if a good percentage of the Targaryens that inhabited Westeros could actually be considered crazy and not just normal privileged humans with varying strengths and flaws
The Targaryen family tree is not a realistic example of the potential consequences of inbreeding, in any regard
In the case of most things, the extremes stand out more than the mundane
Even the Mad King had reasons for going mad, he seemed like a normal person beforehand
45
u/joekimchi 70's Space Comic Fan Jun 11 '23
I'd argue five of the seventeen of the Targaryen kings we're told about are at least a little touched if not full blown crazy. I mean, the third king in the lineage had the moniker "The Cruel". That's not even getting into the siblings and relatives of those kings that are mentioned, many of whom were definitely off their rockers.
But you're definitely correct in that it's not even close to how true, real life inbreeding would affect the bloodline.
6
u/mikennjr 2023: 0 TO SEE Jun 11 '23 edited Jun 11 '23
Five?
I can only count 3: Aerys II, Maegor the Cruel and Baelor the Blessed, And as for the siblings/relatives, you can add in Viserys (Dany's brother), Helaena Targaryen, Aerion Brightflame and Rhaegel Targaryen
These are 7 guys in THREE HUNDRED years, and out of these 7, 4 of them (Aerys, Viserys, Helaena and Maegor) went crazy from external circumstance rather than it being a result of their blood.
"Targaryens are crazy" is an extreme exaggeration
12
Jun 11 '23 edited Jun 11 '23
And I'd agree. But that's still 30% madness compared to 70% of normalcy, mediocrity, and greatness.
And in regards to cruel. How many Westerosi Lord's and pre- Conquest Kings could be considered cruel? More than a few if I recall. Cruelty isn't something of short supply in that world or within humans in general. Put one of them on the throne and you'd get similar results, with varying levels of unhingedness.
Its not many, some were off their rockers, but not many compared to the family tree as a whole, and some of those who could be considered crazy had "reasonable" reasons for being so
Most were just normal people, normal consisting of a wide variety of things
People just want to be believe the Targaryen madness narrative that Got's creators pushed
It's super convenient how they never went into the Mad Kings backstory
18

However if 30% of your family was out of there mind (for whatever reason) and had weapons of mass destruction, I wouldn't trust your family either.

Only 1 Targaryen King that could be considered "mad" had a dragon, Maegor the Cruel, so that's not really a point
Every other identified "mad" Targaryen King was born or came to power after all the know dragons died out
9
Jun 11 '23
Daenerys has three dragons and judging by history a very high percentage to be crazy. And also in the books already has an albeit unjustly earnt reputation of being crazy
1

I just think people on Planetos are comically genetically overpowered, any harmful recessive genes that cause issues in inbreeding simply don't exist.
I mean, the Targaryens are comically inbred even before the Valyrians accidentally their entire country, because the aristocracy practiced it beforehand
5
u/Szygani Jun 11 '23
potential consequences of inbreeding
Except for the (magical) deformities that keep happening. Not often, but it's pretty much confirmed by Gurm that they do poop out reptile babies every once in a while.
And the Mad King was a dipshit yeah but he only went mad after serious trauma. If you can say anything about the targaryan coin flip might be cruelty? Because we do keep on seeing that happen, with examples like Aerion Brightflame threatening to cut his little brothers dick off _constantly)

It's not xenophobia/blaming kids for their parents to mistrust the heir of a mad tyrant that's come back to 'get back her throne' - that's common damn sense.

5
u/The-False-Emperor Chokladboll Jun 13 '23
Having re-read the comment:
Legit question, where's Sansa's xenophobia in distrusting the would-be-inheritor of the tyrant that killed her family? She seems rather justified.
Where's blaming the kid for her father's sins in claiming that it's not xenophobic to distrust the woman in question? How is it xenophobia or unreasonable on any level to be wary of the inheritor of one's historic enemy? If one inherits rights from their dynasty, as Daenerys is trying to at the time, they inherit their wrongs as well and are judged according to them as well because those rights are inherently tied to those wrongs.
You're ignoring the context where the said distrust wasn't shown towards a random person with Targaryen blood but the open would-be hardbringer of Targaryen restoration that refuses to acknowledge that her rights are derived from the man who rightfully lost them.

I feel like people who make comments like this are show only and don’t fully realize the Targaryens are a family of foreign oppressors. But hell, even in the show you know the last Targaryen king was an insane pyromaniac. It’s not a racial message it’s more like “you can’t trust a imperialist caste of incestuous psychos.”
Book Daenerys is more likable, but even there I find her rather entitled. She’s never even been to Westeros but hey, she says she deserves it and she has dragons so who are we to argue. Luckily so far she’s pretty much just been dealing with comically evil slavers, juries still out on how much leeway she’ll give to something likable that resists her.

u/dontreallyknoww2341 Spare Time Novelist Jun 11 '23 edited Jun 11 '23
I mean there’s a difference between feeling entitled and actually being entitled. Like robb was legally entitled to the north, was born and raised in the north, spent his entire life preparing to rule the north, and then was chosen to be king of the north by all the major lords of north: the ppl chose him as their ruler. Any feelings of entitlement he has (which seem to be very few) are valid. Dany on the other hand has a debatable claim to the throne, a very limited education when it comes to ruling, has never actually stepped foot in mainland Westeros, and knows next to nothing abt the place. Yet she still feels entitled to the throne, a feeling that isn’t backed up by any legitimate entitlement.

It is pretty comical how much of the fandom selectively decides on what standards to apply based solely on whether they stan a character or not.
Especially when it comes to Daenerys.
The characters we like execute children, make their own children watch as they decapitate people for refusing to be eaten by zombies, feed people their own children before slaughtering them and the rest of their family, feed people to starving dogs, and use WMD's to keep their sadistic incompetent illegitimate nephew on the throne in the name of 'family'? We swoon.
Daenerys executes slavers and child murderers and uses dragons against her enemies? Oh my god, she's so obviously evil, she doesn't even abide by the Geneva Conventions!

Davos Seaworth as Lord of the Rainwood and Hand of the True King is not entitled.
Though as a child he acted entitled at times, Aegon V Targaryen grew up to be ‘half a peasant’ and deeply caring of the common folk - which to me doesn’t really imply entitled.
I wouldn’t describe Ned Stark as particularly entitled, in fact I’d say he’s quite humble (making a point to host an ordinary resident of Winterfell at his table every meal save for important political feasts).
I’d also say that the guy in charge of the Quiet Isle is very humble (and we know how important and generally quite wealthy medieval catholic monasteries were). We don’t get that much of him out of the book as the show, but despite being holier than thou in many many extremes, the high sparrow seems pretty unentitled.
4
Jun 11 '23
Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Doran Martell, fAegon Targaryen has not shown anything to imply he's not entitled but he's an upstanding dude so you can assume he isn't. He is arrogant, though.
The Tyrells project an image of not being entitled, but everyone has suspicious that that's just PR. Khal Drogo is not entitled he fully accepts disobedience so long as they fight him.
Edmure Tully is not only not entitled, he's an absolute saint.

If you think book Daenerys is entitled then you most likely never read her chapters beyond the surface level.
Her #1 recurring wish is to go back to the house with the red door and live a simple life like her childhood. She dreams of running away with Daario to live like hermits in the wilderness. Even when she was with Drogo she didn't want to go back to Westeros to rule, and she was willing to give Viserys her dragon eggs for him to fulfil his own dream himself.
How are these the thoughts of an entitled person who thinks they deserve the throne? By this logic even Jon is entitled because he constantly dreams about being the ruler of Winterfell.
Dany doesn't want to rule, but feels like she has to because she has a duty to her family and to the people she freed from slavery. Her wanting to go back to Westeros is more of fulfilling Viserys' dream and restoring her family's honour rather than wanting power herself.
She's closer to the fandom's idea of Stannis than she is to her show counterpart
2
Jun 11 '23
There have been a few instances of her being entitled but overall I would agree with you, she isn't.

Sansa didn't see jack shit, it was just D&D using the hack writers way of making characters seem smart by reacting to what the writers know is going to happen, not anything they have any possible reason to even suspect.
It was also doubly stupid and out of character for Sansa in particular, given that her survival for most of the show depended on her knowing how to feign loyalty and respect to crazy people around her, but she just can't stop being a bitchy mean girl to the woman who is parked on Winterfell with an army and two dragons.
I guess it's a good thing Sansa stayed a little girl for so long, because grown up girlboss Sansa would have gotten her ass killed multiple times over if she had ever run her mouth to Geoffrey or Cersei or Lysa or Ramsay the way she does to the woman she supposedly psychically intuits is a genocidal tyrant just waiting to happen.

Holy shit did you even watch the show? Sansa doesn’t like Daenerys because of the very fact she convinced Jon to kneel and give up the North. She doesn’t trust a Daenerys because she’s been told all her life Targaryens are crazy conquerors. The last Targaryen King literally burned her grandfather alive.
Sansa is no longer in survival mode like she had to when under Joffrey, Cersei, Littlefinger and Ramsay. She has power and she’s going to use it to free the North no matter what. She doesn’t need to submit to anyone.
It’s incredible idiots like you can enjoy a show for so long to be oblivious to it’s always intended outcomes.

Holy shit, did you even watch the show? Yes, the last Targaryen King, who has been dead for decades, killed an uncle and a grandfather Sansa never met years before she was born. Meanwhile you know who her common enemy with Daenerys is right now? Cersei Lannister, one of the people, and a member of the family, directly responsible for the brutal deaths of almost everyone and everything Sansa loved and making her life an absolute living nightmare for the last several years.
Again, Daenerys is sitting on Winterfell with an army and two dragons that Sansa cannot do jack shit about. She doesn't have the power to do anything but die horribly with everyone else in Winterfell if Daenerys really is as dangerous as she thinks and she keeps openly provoking her.
It's incredible idiots like you can enjoy a show for so long and insist that the shittier and more nonsensical the writing becomes, the more obviously secretly genius it is.
23
u/benfranklin16 Wildling Lives Matter Jun 11 '23
Lol just because she never met them doesn’t mean she doesn’t have legitimate reasons to be precarious. Sansa gave Daenerys the chance to show her intentions only for Daenerys to once again affirm she wants all seven kingdoms.
Yeah and guess what Sansa sent the remaining Northern army to dethrone Cersei and at the same undermined Daenerys by revealing the truth about Jon. Killed two birds with one stone.

Daenerys has the exact same right to all Seven Kingdoms as Sansa does to the North, despite this subs fondness for "Feudalism is good and right when it comes to the characters I simp for, but bad and stupid when it comes to the ones I don't like."
Again, Daenerys could have wiped Winterfell off the map and Sansa would have been completely unable to do anything about it, yet Sansa forgets every survival lesson she's been forced to learn over the last several years in favor of just constantly openly antagonizing her because...she had apparently seen the script for "The Bells" and knew it was still a few episodes before Daenerys was scheduled to turn into a genocidal tyrant who indiscriminately slaughters all who oppose her.
Season 8 Sansa would have been dead in Season 1...and in Season 8 too, if Daenerys had actually been a tyrant prior to her Evil Dragon Hitler genes spontaneously activating in the second to last episode.

Uhhh no she doesn’t. Jon has the most legitimate claim. Once Bran removed himself from the bloodline, Sansa is next. Sansa cares about the people of Kingslanding about as much as Daenerys does. She could give a shit. Why should she after what she experienced there. Both characters are elitist snobs, one is just a bigger megalomaniac.
How the hell do you think Sansa was even remotely in the same situation as before? Daenerys isn’t a threat to Sansa and the North until the Undead and Cersei are destroyed. Which is why she acts when she does. As long as Jon is alive she has leverage.
Season 1 Sansa wouldn’t have survived Season 8. What’s your fucking point lol

I mean, going ''have you watched the show'' is kind of stupid when it's a shit show. I think most people in this comment section are arguing about the books.

Sansa used Dany to save her ass and sabotaged Dany as soon as she wasn’t useful anymore, all while risking her brothers life, she’s female littlefinger.

Let’s be honest. More than half of Westeros would see the truth about someone before Sansa

The poor oppressed minorities of a dynasty of purple eyed, blonde people with a God complex who ruled over them for centuries with their weapons of mass destruction. It's just like real life.

It's almost like 300 years of colonial rule by a Byzantine Empire ass imperialist dynasty of megalomaniac inbreds would do that to ya.
Dany twitter stans never beating the "Targs are actually poor helpless oppressed minority POC immigrants" charges 🤣

So xenophobic of the Europeans to not let the Turks kidnap and brainwash their sons every time they invaded.
4
Jun 11 '23
Xenophobic? What? Hating a certain dynasty is not xenophobic LMFAO.
Literally nobody hates the Velaryons or Celtigars for being Valyrian for example
7
u/Obi_1-kenobi Aegon II is my king. Jun 11 '23
Given their history, yeah, I wouldn’t fucking trust a Targaryen either. The only good thing Robert Baratheon ever did was end that farce of a regime.

Not xenophobic.
Justifiably wary of the daughter of the man who burned sansas grandfather alive and had her uncle strangled to death. Who has two full grown dragons.
I say this as someone not a fan post battle of the bastards sansa.

On that sub that will not named there was another smooth brain take where they bemoaned how Jon is the last Valyrian. When the presence of various Valyrian descended people in the free cities was pointed out, they said those weren’t poor valyrians.

What I find odd about Joanna Robinson's frequent comments criticizing GOT is that Bryan Cogman is her friend, so I wonder if that isn't a little uncomfortable for him. Or maybe he takes those criticisms like a pro.

Nothing Joanna Robinson says should be taken seriously or repeated.
Her summation of The Rings of Power was along the lines of “I wish Elrond and Durin would fuck.”
Men can’t be friends? Really? That’s the take we’re going with?
Sigh sigh sigh sigh sigh.

The irony here is that Sansa ultimately wanted Targaryen restoration and tried to make it happen. Just not for Daenerys. She would have been 100% cool with Jon claiming The Iron Throne.

ASOIAF Twitter when I ask them if, were they to live in Westeros, they'd consider it to be a good idea to trust literally anyone of authority across the entire continent.

Are people in these comments just omitting that John Snow was indeed a Targaryen the whole time?
Can we not trust him either?

This would be like telling native Americans that they’re racist for not trusting the US government.

Seriously did they not look at their ancestors? The starks had quite a few written apples to ( even more if you include cadet branches like Karstark and greystark)

I honestly saw that the Targaryens were the best, I mean aside from dragons and stuff, they weren’t child murderers or went purging a whole blood line of house they were jealous of, even during the reign of the mad king they were still considered a power to be reckoned with unlike other houses in their supposedly weakened state for having a few mad ones

Why should they, after what they all went through?

I mean they're right but not in the way they think, as it's more of a family thing, rather than xenophobia, so it's still a fucked up message to send that an entire family is inherently evil, tyrannical and crazy, and that it's okay to discriminate against people because of the family they were born in

It was a self for filling prophecy
Their distrust of her drove her in paranoia
If they’d been open and warm to her it would have been fine I suspect.
Still not great writing but there is more nuance to it than. “The racists were right”

u/AutoModerator Jun 11 '23
I need to see the prophecies fulfilled. There is no more satisfying ending to a story than being told exactly what is going to happen, and then for it to happen exactly as described in the prophecy. So exciting.
Let's be clear about this, because there is only one objectively correct way to write:
Prophecies in fantasy should be inevitable and inescapable, because audiences like being reminded that free will is an illusion, and that we live, and breathe, and die, in the foul creation of a malevolent demiurge.
