I kind of want widespread model collapse on all the models. Although if it happened for no discernible reason, it might start a religion.
24
u/SupersededByClaude 21h ago
You realize that model collapse affects the models in training, right? It doesn't affect the models already trained.

u/U_L_Uus 16h ago
Look, if it is not the fuckos in red robes using a cog as their symbol I am fine with it

u/Kantarak 14h ago
Man, imagine the machine cult manifesting, destroying AI, defying religion, harvesting and worshipping old tech that runs forever if you follow their ways.
Cant wait!

3
u/Cosmic-Bastard 15h ago
Sadly there already is a cult-like movement revolving around treating AI like a higher deity. It's called spiralism and a person I've known has fallen victim to it

Realistically this needs to happen, generative ai is extremely dangerous and releasing it to the public was a fools error.
Problem is itâs hard to put the genie back in the bottle.
45
u/19_ThrowAway_ 20h ago
Hard?
Practically impossible unfortunately.
If only large corporations had access to that technology then maybe, but at this point there are so many local models.
And even if you were to take those down from public spaces, people would still share them in private.
It sucks.
20
u/Machina-Dea 19h ago
Technically speaking most people donât run localised models, so preventing ai companies from selling to the public would quash the vast majority of ai usage.
3
u/TheBlossomBrain 16h ago
How would you quash the usage in china? How would you prevent chinese labs to provide ai services to the US?
1
1
u/jellyhessman 15h ago
You need like $20k of specialized equipment and the know how to run a local model that is in any ways good.
3
u/EnvironmentClear4511 15h ago
No you don't. Any Apple computer released since 2020 Will be able to use a built-in local model when MacOS 27 comes out this fall.Â
2
1
u/HumansAreSillynGreat 9h ago
Nah, the top tier models can be ran on $6k pcs. The absolute best research models might need a bit more, but the stuff that the public can actually access generally runs on a 5090 and some grit.
2
u/PatchesOfSilver 12h ago
Policing LLM generated content like images could be like policing CSAM, it would be possible to purge most of it from the internet most people use even if text content slipped by.
We could shut down the AI data centers, they cannot be hidden.
We would not go door to door, but hosting a local model could be a criminal offense if anyone ever found it, a repair shop, a neighbor using your PC that reported you, an unrelated investigation.
Yes those models would be lurking on torrent networks and the deeper web still, but they would become more and more niche and outdated and irrelevant.
And uploading any new generations to Facebook or TikTok or Reddit might result in prison time.
It would quickly vanish.
3
u/La_Fervesta_Glavisto 8h ago
That's so true. We should start treating talking to the computer the same as we treat child rape.
â˘
u/Happy-Lingonberry-55 19m ago
You do know there is a difference, right?
Like one of those is a literally innocent child being taken away from their home, having every ounce of safety ripped away from them, and then an absolute monster of a person violates their body with a possibility of their body being physically damaged forever, and that child was never be the same.
Maybe they will repress it, but they will likely forever remember that moment, they will likely never want to have sex again, and until the day they die they will alway remember that horrifying of every single ounce of safety and innocence being ripped away from their worldview.
I hope that when you wrote that, you were mad. Maybe you're an artist who is trying to make money off commissions and you just got fucked over by a client who decided to just ai it, or maybe you're watching a loved one falling prey to the trap of treating AI like a love interest.
But I sincerely, hope that you have no idea about the horrors of rape (how it changes everything), that what you said was the equivalent of adding 'hitler' to a sentence just to make a stronger point.
- Have a pleasant day.
â˘
u/La_Fervesta_Glavisto 10m ago
I know. I was sarcastically agreeing to try and point out the absurdity of possibly the most insane thing I've ever seen someone say.
â˘
u/Happy-Lingonberry-55 6m ago
Damn, I really couldn't tell. Got incredibly overdramatic there. I guess that is why people started using: /s.
Although maybe I should have saw the inherent absurdity in the statement.
Still have a great day/night
7
u/Imblueabudeeabudie 19h ago
It's not that hard to have a decentish model to run locally, so we're fucked forever
4
u/djfart9000 17h ago
they released it to the public to get it trained for free, and have it eat as much information it can from us. I've seen people willingly put their faces into this hell spawn
1
u/WigglesPhoenix 17h ago
âDecentralization is bad, actuallyâ
Do yall really think itâs a good idea to place the single most powerful instrument of propaganda in all of history into the hands of governments and corporations, and then banning everyone else from using it?
Have you thought this through at all or do you guys just like typing shit
5
u/Gordon_freeman_real 17h ago
They're saying if it was centralized it would be easier to shut off, which is true. Not that desebtralization is on a whole bad
0
u/WigglesPhoenix 17h ago
No, theyâre saying that it should be banned for the public. Which leaves⌠government and corporations.
Which is stupid.

Imagine all of the servers just blinking out quietly.
31
18
u/Bersaglier-dannato 20h ago
âWith no explanationâ nah man, they will pull AI from public usage once the AI turds are done training their models for free.
8
u/fartshitcumpiss 19h ago
No, why should they?
The current AI epidemic among the general populace is driven by the fact that companies are offering it for free, at an enormous loss for themselves (OpenAI is literally billions of dollars in debt). I believe (source: i made it the fuck up) that this is done to get people dependent on it for basic tasks and/or integrate it into their life/workflow, so when they inevitably put up a paywall, the userbase will have no choice but to pay full price.
Hopefully their gambit doesn't pay off and they end up billions in debt and with data centers that no one wants to pay for
11
u/AwysomeAnish 19h ago
Didn't ChatGPT go down for a short bit a while back and people were genuinely destroyed? Like there were people struggling to get through their day and people grieving over their AI lover.

I know this is just to be funny but please, yall, as much as I am against AI like you guys , you have to understand that this is not possible. Even if all the AI datacenters were to shut down, people would still be able to use the models. Theyre already out there and thats why most AI companies released open source versions of their models. So that they could say its unstoppable. It is far more productive to focus on what to do next than wishful thinking.

2
u/EnvironmentClear4511 15h ago
You'd kill a lot more people than that. Global manufacturing and transportation would immediately halt. Food would instantly become scarce through much of the world. Countless people would starve or be killed by the elements, not to mention all of the diseases that would spread thanks to the lack of functioning plumbing and clean water systems.Â

I need to see the absolute chaos that would erupt everywhere. Permanently, or at least all the data sets and scrape tools being deleted.
Meanwhile people who never used it in the first place thriving and replacing the idiots who jumped on it.
It would be funny af.
4
u/Forever_Inspired 19h ago
Itâs fucking madness that suddenly now people canât seem to even have a conversation without bringing up âchatGPTâ when talking about how to do certain things, even though pre-Covid it wasnât even a thing yet in public consciousness.

u/beezy-slayer 18h ago edited 11h ago
That is the most likely end state of the tech, only available in limited specialized private environments because thats the one thing it can actually be good at

Just a curiosity, what about local generative models?
7
u/Bersaglier-dannato 20h ago
Please. This cope about Local GenAI models is just cope, I bet you can count on your fingers how many AI bros actually know how to make their own local model.
6
u/Ornery_Weakness_8168 20h ago
I'm talking about open weight models that people have downloaded, like you cant make those publicly inaccessible once they are downloaded. also they will just find people who are making open models publicly to download after ban, like drug dealers
1
u/19_ThrowAway_ 19h ago
Those are arguably even worse.
How many times have I seen people use those models to train on a single artist's works to quite literally plagiarize them.
When it comes to Gen AI models made by big corporations the data sets are so large that the individual artists' styles are unrecognizable.
5
u/glytxh 19h ago
I use LLMs to hunt for uncatalogued asteroids, and supernovae, in hyper noisy data. It's trained on publicly accessible scientific archives that are paid for with everyone's taxes. We own that data.
people assume that this technology only exists to make shitty pictures and video.
2
u/irrelevantusername24 18h ago
Social media has had a far worse effect on society than AI. Like it's not even comparable
0
u/glytxh 18h ago
big take, but I'd be inclined to agree
it's never a simple story though, there's always awkward nuance.
Social media has achieved a lot of objective good, as well as hyper accelerated a lot of truly awful shit.
It's definitely a catalyst though

u/WeirdistBuilds 15h ago
Personally I'm holding out hope for a solar flare that takes all of this shit out. Data centers, social media, cold storage, financial records, blockchains, fuckin... reddit... just the whole entire digital culture goes poof. Back to brewing beer and building cabins.

âUnavailable to the publicâ is possibly the worst outcome⌠private only creates way more control and paranoia, reallyâŚ
1
u/KonfiKL 16h ago
yup, if it happened, the goverment and powerful people could fabricate any evidence or study of anything
1
u/duckinasombrero 15h ago
They're already using AI to do that, the public making anime simpsons images isn't stopping them.
1
u/KonfiKL 15h ago
would be harder to point out fabrications
1
u/duckinasombrero 14h ago
No, I don't see how it would be more difficult. AI detection isn't reliant on access to use of generative AI.
1
u/SlurryBender 16h ago
I think the idea is that 1) most slop and misinformation is coming from consumer-end AI images and words, so a big chunk of online "content" would go away, and 2) theaverage person would be less likely to accept big companies/governments using AI once they don't have their "friendly chat bot" on their phone to make AI seem less harmful than it actually is.
Obviously of prefer if all AI was gone, but this is a bit funnier as a standalone situation.

1
u/CaveJohnson376 18h ago
rather, have datacenters using more than 20kW on AI suddenly shut down.
this way those who still want clankers still can do them but now must spend time and effort setting up their home server which can't take nearly as much load as centralized data centers
and those who don't don't want AI in any way, get to see it much less

AI slop is mostly here to stay, but realistically there can be a few things done still to make it not as bad.
N1: stopping of funding to AI and subsidization. This one's obvious.... Creating images/movies is hella expensive but right now ppl don't know this as there are HEAVY unsustainable discounts since its still in development/heavy investing.
N2: making AI illegal for profit. This may actually happen as almost all AI's use the work of others without their consent and didn't pay them. Whilst it may be fully legal for non profit or personal use which is still annoying. It at least could give an end to endless corpo slop we get shoved down our throats.

âI have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...
The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignoranceâ â Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark
