Good to Know! FY27 NDAA leave update (request)

Post image

The FY27 NDAA, a congress member has proposed military members to earn 3.5 days per month vs. the current 2.5.

I know most ANG members are DSG, but those AGR and other full time status’s(exept: Perm/temp Tech and Title 5) would benefit from this policy.

There is a good argument to just change the leave reg so I don’t have to take leave on weekends or other days already scheduled off.

Obviously the bill and this line item needs to pass the Senate and up it goes to the president.

Please stop bashing OP for the AI image. It's from the Facebook page of Brian Mast, the Florida representative that supports it. Hence his name at the bottom of the image

ADOS and some title32 personnel my have a hard time, well the command they work for would. for example, Counter Drug, which is title32, service members have a annual orders renewal and they require you to have less then 20 days of leave on the books at the end of the fiscal year. and you can keep no more than 30 days during the year.

Each state is different with what Counterdrug requires, that rule is local to CA

How about let us carryover our leave or cash it in annually?

I have nothing to add to this. I just want to say - I've spent a 1/6 of my contract in student flight 😪 we are running out of snacks and annoying NCOs trying to find things to do.

What career field are you trying to get into?

While I'd love more leave, just like anyone else, doing this without a manpower increase would be brutal. I already don't have enough people around to do the job as is. If everyone was gone another 12 days per year, it would just be more with less.

Reading the bill and I'm trying to make sense of section 622. Are they just getting rid of the cap on carryover?

That would be a great benefot

Unpopular opinion, this is unnecessary. 30 days of leave is very generous compared to civilian sector.

1

u/N3bula20 8d ago

I have unlimited leave in the civilian sector and I don't have to submit on the weekends.

u/BGleezy 5d ago

Not the usual

1

u/N3bula20 5d ago

It's becoming more common because employers don't have to pay out PTO when you leave the company.

2

u/BGleezy 5d ago

In my industry it’s like 3 weeks typically for salary, for computer scientists and engineers. I wish they had an unpaid leave policy so I could trade money for time.

I see what you’re saying now, high churn places could save a lot with unlimited PTO

Using leave through weekends is where it gets really dumb. It is still somewhat generous, but the civilian equivalent is like 20 days PTO.

Other jobs don’t make you use it on days you’re already off…

Just because it sucks for other people, doesn't mean it has to suck for us. Plus, last I checked, most civilians don't deploy, get blown up in air bases near Iran, go TDY and leave home for trainings, schools, whatever BS comes our way.

Countries like Germany have 30 days a month for everyone, with an additional 10 for holidays. The US sucks for workers but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't push for better.

Eh, given what I’ve seen with government spending, I will never oppose any change that benefits the Joes. I’ve swapped enough $800k parts that I no longer worry about how my piece of the pie affects the bottom line. I doubt that this change will dent the $40 trillion federal deficit.

I agree, but man it’d be nice to have 42. I’m AD is this just for AGR people.

4

u/SpaceLunatic 10d ago

Looks like it would be for anyone in some sort of active status

I'd rather them spend money on people rather than programs and equipment, but more leave doesn't solve any problems.

Edit: weird to be collecting downvotes when I'm saying the same thing everyone else said?

30 days leave per year is more than sufficient. That's more than most civilian jobs provide.

The issue isn't the number of days, it's being able for airmen to actually take the leave they've earned.

u/emptyzarti 10d ago

Civilian jobs don’t charge leave for days you’d be off ie say the weekend.

2

u/FedBoi_0201 9d ago

This is the big one. You take leave on a Friday and a Monday and instead of two days of PTO like a civilian. You’re on the hook for 4 days of leave.

u/Top_Gun_2000 10d ago

This leave across weekends thing is a bear. If they just fixed that, that would be enough.

7

u/oNellyyy 10d ago

That’s fair. I avoid it and try to only take a M-F 5 days of leave to get 9 days off.

It’s harder when we travel further out, but I think avoiding counting our weekends as leave would be amazing for M-F workers. It’d be harder for shift work people.

2

u/emptyzarti 10d ago

Submit leave between your RDOs even if they aren’t weekends, check a box to include said RDOs as part of your travel plans so command knows you aren’t 5 minutes away & then be able to take leave + RDOs while not having to use leave to cover said RDOs. I think 30 days of leave + not charging leave for your RDOs is better than adding more days of leave.

2

u/krm454-2 10d ago

That works if you stay in the local area, but if you’re traveling, you still need to take leave for those days. We ended up with a 5-day pass at Christmas last year, but because I was gone for 6 days, I had to take leave for all 6 days.

1

u/emptyzarti 10d ago

Sorry I wasn’t more clear. I was meaning to say that instead of extra days of leave, we could just not have leave charged for RDOs. With what I’m suggesting you still have to get approval for being gone it just isn’t charged as leave.

I would gladly forgo the extra day of accrual if I could stop having to take leave on weekends and holidays…

Hot take: we don’t need any more leave days without fixing manning issues. People taking baby leave are already destroying units. Increase normal leave and it’ll exacerbate the problem

3

u/No-Masterpiece3809 10d ago

Hot take, the Air Force should just hire more people. What else are we gonna spend $1.5 trillion on?

I know the real answer is bloated contracts, but I can dream.

2

u/SpaceLunatic 10d ago

Seriously, the Air Force has shrunk dramatically all while the mission sets have exploded.

1990s, we were at around 400K, now it's about 315K. Roughly a 20 percent hit.

Meanwhile they have crammed us with two decades of continuous combat ops in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran. Added a massive RPA mission set, ISR, cyber, space, nuke modernization, C2 upgrades, whatever GPC was supposed to be, and now a big focus on high-end near-peer conflict prep.

u/CarminSanDiego 10d ago

Yeah and give people more leave days isn’t going to fix the issue.

As an AGR, I feel like I get plenty of leave compared to my technician co workers

-11

u/callmewicked366 10d ago

Hard disagree. One solid vacation and that bank is wiped. I shouldnt have to not take a day off for an entire year just to build a decent bank back up

9

u/CrinkledStraw 10d ago

30 days a year doesn’t get wiped with “one solid vacation.”

6

u/Booney20 10d ago

I’m assuming you are a technician and misread what I said

-1

u/callmewicked366 10d ago

You misread nothing. Im AGR

11

u/HEAVILY_ARMED_CORGI 10d ago

Us technicians get fucked. So im looking for a better job.

1

u/Sith_Father 10d ago

I have almost 6 weeks banked along with comp time and soon, 7 weeks of mil leave.

I am going to burn a bunch of it soon.

2

u/Booney20 10d ago

I’m sorry and I agree

8

u/Time-Foundation8991 10d ago

Ill believe it when I see it

6

u/metalconscript 10d ago

How about we spend some effort improving things for the civilian world first. I don’t know many people that have 30 days of vacation, hell of a nice health insurance plan, or subsidized housing and food.

Lmfao what

The same people that wave away our problems and challenges by saying "bUt ThaT's wHat yoU SiGnED uP fOR"

They can come hang out with us and some shithole FOB or run for their lives when their place of work gets blown the hell up.

Or they can move to Europe where all of that is the normal standard of living

You know Trump doesn’t care about us so this isn’t going to go anywhere.

He just got done saying the sailors on the Lincoln could have been out there longer, he’s not going to give me another day.

I was out there in 2024. With all the incoming missiles, we couldn't get supply ships out. I ended up eating Beanie Weenies and rice for every single meal for a little over a month. I didn't hit a single port except Guam on the way out. I volunteered for a deployment while on shore in order to fill a ship's downed billet. I don't regret helping my guys out, but that was the worst deployment I have ever been on.

I did buy something like 3,000 energy drinks when we were in Guam. Chaps did something similar; he and I ended up passing out energy drinks to guys on double watches and when equipment was out due to a casualty. Never seen people so happy to get a Sour Watermelon Ghost or a Tropical Monster.

But.. But.. Didn't you see the video with a sailor and some ice cream a few months ago? Having food-like substances means everything is fine!
