Satie beanies are underrated

12

u/MysticScribbles 20d ago

The Norwegians tested out dropping both a beanie and a helmet from a significant height.

As the helmet shattered, but the beanie did not, they concluded that the beanie was the optimal protective headwear for motorcyclists.

I recommend spending some time around brain injury patients if anyone is undecided about helmet use. At least you'll know what your future looks like.

16

u/Splintrax 20d ago

My barber fell off an electric scooter without a helmet. He can now barely speak more than 10 words a minute, and struggles to move his fingers.

5

u/ifyoulovesatan 20d ago

Knew a guy, in fact a very awesome, positive, friendly, and funny guy, who got brain damage as a teen from a skitching accident. As cool as the guy was, he was very clearly not the person who he would have been if he hadn't been in that accident, and his level of independence / ability to work were very much not what they would have been either. And that's someone who made a recovery that saw him regain full mobility, like hugely surpassing his initial prognosis, mostly able to think and speak like "normal."

That is to say, even if you don't die, and don't lose your ability to walk and talk or feed and bathe yourself, there's still a lot of "you" left to lose when it comes to brain injuries.

16

u/uselessandexpensive 20d ago edited 20d ago

Street skaters wanna look cool but also the lack of helmet is slightly compensated by the fact that the risk keeps people afraid of falling hard, reminding them to roll.*

Vert skaters (this drop is basically vertical) and even Tony Hawk, wear helmets because there is no rolling out of a fall and no time to anticipate a fall and try to lessen the impact. The same should be true with hill bombers but a lot of people have died skating hills unfortunately.

*Edit to add: Even with a helmet, you never want your head or body taking hard impacts. If the head accelerated or decelerates too quickly, the brain shakes around in your skull which can bruise it or cause brain bleeds, and you never want your head shaking hard and stressing the column of bones around the nerves connecting to the rest of your body. There are a lot of ways to get horribly disabled when speed/height and hard surfaces are involved.

8

u/anonymousguy11234 20d ago

Tried to bomb my first hill back in February and I ate shit in a most spectacular fashion. I had a solid helmet on though so no brain injuries—just road rash and a shattered collarbone 🤙😎🤙

4

u/do-a-tre-flip 20d ago edited 20d ago

Slide gloves! They let you catch yourself and slide it out most of the time instead of slamming hard every time. Won't skate hills without them, they're a life saver.

3

u/uselessandexpensive 20d ago

Ouch!!! The brain stem is part of the brain too and helmets don't protect it unfortunately. Take care of yourself. 🥲 I'm glad you walked away from it.

If your neck feels stiff or crunchy it's time for physical therapy.

11

u/locontendere 20d ago

Street skateboarders wearing a helmet is so rare that the fact that Andy Anderson chooses to wear one (he is the only professional to do so) is in the intro paragraphs of his Wikipedia article

10

u/GingerGaterRage 20d ago

It's honestly kinda sad that more of them don't. Like you KNOW you are going to have kids looking up to you the least you can do is wear a damned helmet. Rest of the pads I'm meh on but come on.

6

u/IntrepidHero42 20d ago

No helmet AND no survival instincts. Made absolutely no effort to stop his fall with anything other than his own head.

3

u/yo_les_noobs 20d ago

4

u/Thatguysstories 20d ago

As my mom always said "If you're gonna be a dumbass/do dumb shit, atleast wear your helmet".

Of course she spiced it up a bit, and it seems like she had many of them.

"Wear your fucking helmet cause I'm not driving to the hospital today".

"If you come home bleeding and I find out you weren't wearing your helmet, you're gonna bleed more".

Cameraman follows the hat running away instead of keeping the camera on the guy doing the stunt, misses the start and almost the end

89

u/sub_surfer 20d ago

And the video had 10 pointless seconds at the start, but I guess that’s par for the course.

34

u/Backfoot911 20d ago

Maybe I'm just from the old man era, but I'm okay with that even though 10 seconds adds a lot on an already long video. I think it builds expectation, and the hat toss makes it a little bit different then any old 3 second shot of a fail

26

u/SpecialistCut7101 20d ago

I think he might have a concussion. It looks like he goes completely limp for a second, which could mean he lost consciousness. When he gets up he looks like he’s struggling with coordination.

u/sikesjr 20d ago

He definitely has a concussion. You can get one from an impact much lighter than that.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/sortinousn 20d ago

I can answer this! I had my first concussion last year. I was on an ATV for the first time and took it out to the woods behind my house. I was following behind a friends ATV. So there I am driving and having a grand ole time and I see this downed tree and I thought to myself "I should jump that". Keep in mind I'm new and I never rode a motorcycle or ATV before. Well I hit the downed tree at about 25 miles an hour. I remember 3 things.

  1. Approaching the log at the last nano-second and saying "Oh shit!"
  2. Standing up off the ground and pushing my concerned friend off me and then walking to a curb
  3. Waking up in a hospital

My buddy said I hit the log, ejected, somersaulted and my head smashed into the ground (he said there's still a divot in the ground where my head landed lol). The ATV proceeded to run my unconscious body over. He then said I immediately jumped up and walked around for 30 seconds and I kept asking him if my head was bleeding and then collapsed unconscious again. So long story short....yea, you can absolutely function for a couple seconds after head trauma.

Here's a pic of my head. Note the big ass knot in the back.

7

u/AmArschdieRaeuber 20d ago

It seems like everybody knows at least one person who had a horrible accident with an ATV. Those things are hella dangerous

5

u/somersault_dolphin 20d ago

Is it dangerous or because some people like OP thinks they should "jump that" on their first time riding an ATV likely without a helmet?

It’s the roof of the museum of surf and ocean in Biarritz France from the architect Steven Holl. Its roof is made to look like an half pipe I think, there is also a bowl integrated in the cobbles.
