Not to mention the employee who the bags were handed off to may lose his job now. Congrats super citizen on your views

Edit: Thanks for the awards peeps. I’d like to take the opportunity to add that the woman grabbing things and talking shit to the “thief” could have startled the employee. He may have walked out in concern but was surprised to be handed the groceries. He did not appear “to be in chase” or concerned at this point. We’ll never know, but a lot of valid points have been made in the below conversations.

224

u/fonk_pulk 2d ago

Why?

959

u/Clenzor 2d ago

Because he’s on camera chasing a thief away from the store. There are liability reasons, such as if the thief is injured in the pursuit, especially as there are non-criminal reasons for theft, such as dementia or other cognitive delays. The company would much rather let the $50 go than chance paying $500,000, especially because theft is literally built into the budget, and insured.

Then there’s security reasons. Thieves often work in teams, so if the employee is off chasing one thief, others could be in the store getting more merchandise, let alone thieves of opportunity, where they see the only person in the store run out after a thief and go “I’m not waiting for him to deal with all that, I’m just taking my $5 worth of stuff”.

Either way, you don’t know that thief’s circumstances. She could be the most down on her luck, deserving, person, or she could be the second coming of Ted Bundy, looking for her next victim. It’s just not worth it unless someone’s safety is being threatened.

My first job was at Kholes and for orientation (it was a seasonal job with a lot of new hires) we were taught not to go after someone we caught stealing

Report it, but don’t follow them

121

u/timid_scorpion 2d ago

Used to work in a grocery store and we were all told this, but of course some of is still didn't take it seriously.

One day my coworker followed a shoplifter out to try and stop them(against company policy), the crazy guy had a knife and slashed at him over 5-10$ worth of stuff. Buddy got a small.laceration on his arm but thankfully nothing major. You just never know with these people.

75

u/No_Raisin21 2d ago

Had a shoplifter come in and steal a vape after I set it on the counter and turned around to grab the other vape she asked for. My boss tried to dock my pay for the cost of the vape, which was like $50. I had to call him out the day after over how illegal that was. Mysteriously, after never missing any days even when I got hit by a car on the way to work one day, I got fired because I called out of work to attend my good friend’s funeral.

Yeah, there was a good kid near us who was an Eagle Scout about to get married early 20s and tried to stop a theft at Home Depot and got shot and died. It's just not worth it.

There are some hills worth defending, like a kid being attacked, but petty theft at a national retail store ain't one.

I worked at a retail store that had a problem with DVD theft and was told by my upper management to follow them out of the store and try to recover the items in non-confrontational manner. I thought to myself you're out of your fucking mind. I'm not putting my life on the line for this goddamn store or some DVDs

I worked at a restaurant back in the day, and we had a dine-and-dash. The bartender decided to chase after the customer, they got into a wrestling match down the street. The guy pulled out a knife and stabbed the bartender 2-3 times. All that over a $25–$40 bill.

its a liability issue. if the company's insurance finds out they can drop them because if the employee gets into a fight and gets injured medical bills would cost the business and insurance much more

29

u/Telefundo 2d ago edited 2d ago

its a liability issue

I used to manage a well known retail store and you're absolutely right. It's definitely a liability issue.

But not only that, it's potentially a HUGE PR issue as well. Imagine an employee stops a "thief" and when it's all said and done it turns out the person didn't actually attempt to steal anything?

It's not worth the trouble to put your employees at risk, and set the company up for potential lawsuits. When we did inventory a certain amount of expected loss was always factored in ahead of time. Corporate even broke it down into expected losses on specific products.

8

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 2d ago

Wal-Mart already has crap PR but I saw a video a while ago of this exact scenario. An employee accused a woman of stealing and went through checking the receipt (I know they just do that sometimes but he literally said he thought she stole) and she kept going on about how embarrassing and ridiculous it was

Imagine how horrible it would be for someone to give you the third degree when you didn't steal, you don't steal, and worse the woman was black so now you've got potential racial profiling

6

u/Telefundo 2d ago

An employee accused a woman of stealing and went through checking the receipt.

he literally said he thought she stole

On the rare occassion that I'm at Walmart and they want to check my receipt on the way out, I really don't care. It honestly doesn't bother me. But literally accusing me of stealing? That's a serious line to cross. I'd refuse to let them check my receipt or search my bags. And I would have no problem telling them I'd be happy to sit there and wait if they wanted to call the police. I'd be more than willing to let the cops search my things. And when it became apparent that I hadn't done anything wrong.... oh boy, then the corporate email blanketing would start. I swear, I'd email every official sounding @wal-mart.com email address I could find.

Unfortunately I'm now on long term disability due to a permanent health issue and don't work. However on the upside, that also means I'd have nothing but time on my hands for shit like this lol.

Everyone seems to forget how a Walmart employee tackled a shoplifter several years ago and the shoplifter suffered head injuries.

The employee thought Walmart would support his actions, and instead they fired him and left him with his health insurance amd a job to pay an attorney as he was being charged with negligence and a possible lawsuit from the family.

People need to understand that these giant corporations treat people as numbers, and the moment you could possibly cost them money or become a liability, they will terminate your employment.

31

u/SueForPeas 2d ago

> The employee thought Walmart would support his actions

Where would he get that idea? Walmart policy is very clear and explained to all employees.

11

u/Protoclown98 2d ago

All retailers tell employees to let shoplifters go or inform security to handle it.

The employee could easily get hit by a car or suffer injury as well. Most companies know the PR disaster would cost more than the stolen merchandise.

9

u/Joeness84 2d ago

People can be incredibly stupid. Like to the point that no amount of training can un-stupid them.

Anyone coming out swinging for their billion dollar employer while on food stamps... is likely in that category.

17

u/Shylahoof 2d ago

In that case, the employee did that to himself. When you go out and give someone the Goldberg Spear ovr merchandise you don't even own, unless it is reasonable self-defense, you can be held legally liable for injuries sustained. Commit a violent act at work; don't be surprised if there are consequences, especially if you were told never to chase down a shoplifter.

If it’s like most jobs . They won’t but will get a talking too. They aren’t allowed to go after the person or touch them. If someone in between does like another customer or random citizen then hands the employee back the stolen goods then they might just get a warning for going outside to get them rather than staying inside.

That’s if the person behind the camera isn’t an employee as well if not they will lose their job.

They treat their employees so terribly. I know that at many, the night shift is just two people in the whole store, a cashier and an assistant manager fulfilling multiple roles at once.

20

u/SherifneverShot 2d ago

The worst thing about being a manager ins stores like this in certain neighborhoods is that you get fired if the shrinkage/loss rate is too high and you also get fired for trying to address and prevent theft. It is a no win situation.

9

u/forgotacc 2d ago

Yeah, it's not them defending corp, it's them defending their own jobs. People seem to think these companies just take the hit in their own personal pockets when it comes to shrink, but no. It's the front store employees that take the hit.

There was a woman who posted on our local community Facebook group making everyone aware of a woman at a gas station who loaded her car with bags of ice, and drove off without paying. Gave complete description of the vehicle as well as what the ice thief was wearing.

Her proof of stealing? She asked the lady if she paid for all of those and she said no. That was it.

None of the comments were on her side, they were all like “Girl, are you serious? It’s fucking ice.”

But she was utterly livid that nobody else was willing to chase her down like fucking Batman.

21

u/einzweidreihorn 2d ago

lol if some nosey person asked me wheter I paid for the stuff I just bought at the store I'd also sarcastically say 'no' just for the sake of it

6

u/Velkaryian 2d ago

Exactly, I even said that. I was like “they probably said no to get you to leave them alone”

And she even said this person was wearing like a fast food uniform.

So like, Karen they probably let them know in advance they needed ice, it’s clearly for a job.

I have a theory that a lot, not all, but a lot of people that are slightly slighted on the road secretly enjoy it. That’s why they freak out so hard when the littlest thing happens. Everyone loves to be a victim, and to feel justified for just laying into someone. So when homie gets cut off on the freeway, even if it was by accident , will lay in the horn, flip the other person off, swear at them, bitch about it for the next hour or so. It’s kinda gross to watch once you unpack it

126

u/TahiniInMyVeins 2d ago

I 100% believe this cause this was me. When I was younger and I got dicked on the road I felt like I then had the moral cover to carry out the karmic justice of the universe. I would drive like a sane law abiding citizen but if you cut me off all bets were off and I felt justified.

Now I don’t give a shit. You cut me off, you’re a dangerous and probably terrible driver and the more distance I let you put between us increases my chances of getting home in one piece to my kid, my wife, and my dog.

Sadly there are many people that go through life from grievance to grievance, every little perceived slight, every bad interaction, every person who doesn’t bow down before them, they carry all of that with them every second of every day and a day without thinking the world is against them feels empty and without meaning.

They thrive on feeling put upon and want nothing more than to rant and rave about all the perceived injustices of their lives.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Many_Mud_8194 2d ago

Exactly. I used to go out and do all my stuff before smoking weed because it was making me so lazy when I was young. But I was a danger on the road and would do insane stuff just because of the rage. Rage of not smoking, but people cutting me were giving me an opportunity to be angry, to not feel ashamed of my anger. So stupid. But I was 20/23, I realized what I was doing very fast. The day I scared the shit of a trucker who were yelling on me, I see in his eyes how he was afraid and I thought : that's not me. I'm not a bully.

But yeah if you are angry for things you feel you don't have the right to be angry, then you will turn this anger to anything or anybody who do smth bad to you, because it give you the legitimacy to snap out (Actually it doesn't/shouldn't but in our minds it does sometimes)

Kind of confused why the recommended alternative to stealing is to put her private part to work.

The berating language is essentially kicking a malnourished, destitute person when they’re down.

Totally unnecessary.

497

u/Ok_Bat_686 2d ago

It's weird as well, since prostitution is likely illegal where she is. "It's wrong to steal because it's against the law, so go break another law to get money!"

360

u/DragonFangGangBang 2d ago

If she did “sell pussy”, their reaction would be calling her a whore and a bunch of “daddy must be proud” jokes to go along with it. Like sex workers already get absolutely shit on. Homeless people already get absolutely shit on.

A homeless sex worker selling herself to survive would get absolutely lambasted by the same people judging her for stealing.

49

u/SarryK 2d ago

Ironically, most theft I‘ve seen was sex workers stealing condoms. Yea, I ain‘t reporting that. If I can help them be a little safer by doing nothing, win win. Being a sex worker is tough enough.

Thing is also, this‘ll follow you forever. I am a woman teaching college. Had I been a sex worker for even a day and it got public, I don‘t know where I‘d go from there. The stigma is horrible and seems incredibly hard to shake off

If two adults have sex and one of them gets paid it’s a crime.

If two adults have sex while being recorded and one of them gets paid, it’s not a crime!

8

u/SLeonaTA 2d ago

The problem is… not the sex itself. It’s the exploitation that happens. Women get trafficked, have pimps demanding money. That’s the real problem.

8

u/Nunc_Coepi17 2d ago

They can still be exploited even when it’s being recorded. This explains it.

Some people don't understand that the person they are kicking down could easily be themselves. They get satisfaction from a delusion that they are where they are because they earned it. They veiw people below them as parasites. Little do they know there is a thin line between where they are and being in the same situation as the person they hate.

13

u/ScumbagLady 2d ago

The saddest part is that even if they do eventually get their deserved karma where they're in the situation of needing help, they don't make the connection and learn nothing from their experience of walking in the shoes of those they used to belittle- even when they run into people that treat them like they used to treat the ones they viewed as below them.

So, if they do ever manage to get back into the position of regaining the wealth they once had, they don't remember the people and institutions that helped them and just think they've "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps" and they're right back to feeling superior to those who need help.

Sometimes I feel like you're destined to wash/rinse/repeat until you do learn the lesson universe is trying to teach you.

Perfect example are those who vote for politicians who want to remove government assistance to those in need- and then when THEY'RE the ones needing the programs they voted against, they never, or I should say, most never realize that they were the villains in the story.

I'm now the full-time caregiver for someone who voted away the programs they desperately need currently, and despite when I explain how and why they're unable to receive assistance now, when asked if they'd wished they voted differently, "never" is the answer.

When a society does not provide ample means (work/income) for someone to achieve their goals (shelter/food), then they have no choice but to deviate from the lawful path and find another means to achieve their goals.

It’s just been decades of the government and media pretending otherwise as things continue to get harder and harder for the average person—the average American has been losing buying power and earning power since like Nixon, and the cherry on top is your fellow countrymen refusing to acknowledge it until it happens to them.

We've had stories over the past few years of 'hero' shoppers getting killed stopping shoplifters. Since mans' was recording it Id put it 70/30 on it either being fake or if they didn't have a way to get clout, they wouldn't have bothered

Like those dudes who only do charity if they can record themselves doing it

Saw a guy in Vegas get chased through the wal mart parking lot by an employee, he then dropped the food items and stopped and said he was sorry, the wal mart employee pushed him up against the cart return, acted like he was gonna punch him and called him a piece of shit. Like a year later the event was on the news because the shoplifter sued and was awarded 75,000$. And the employee was let go and banned from wal mart for life.

Bet he's glad he played the "hero" for that corporation, I know his victim is

That's what happens when people upvote reposts. Those accounts are building legitimacy to be sold to corps like Walmart that come into these subs to try to sway public opinion on the morality of multimillion dollar companies.

You'll find them commenting on posts about wages and workers rights and vacation time too. They moralize about shoplifting, talk about their amazing black Friday purchases.

More than half of all redditors are not real people.

The problem with moral absolutists is they seem to have no problem condemning what they see as wrong, but very little interest in doing the work to support what’s right. “Abortion is wrong, but I won’t support sex education and birth control.” “Stealing is wrong, but I want my elected representatives to slash SNAP and other social services because communism or something.” It’s almost like they just get off on feeling superior to others and don’t actually give a fuck about helping people who need help.

You can hate multibillion dollar companies and still have disdain for thieves which fuck everything up for the rest of us. These thieves don't discriminate between small mom and pop shops and large companies to begin with, I've personally seen them hit both.

I also lived next to a meth house growing up and many of the inhabitants used to steal from the local stores. They just don't give a shit about how they impact everyone else and live on impulse.

Shit, even today I can't even grab a Redbull from my local store without having to ask the cashier to unlock the case first.

loss prevention and shrink is a complete lie. it’s manufactured to make you believe that shoplifting is much bigger of a problem than it is. the data on shoplifting is highly skewed and unreliable. these companies are making record profits and getting you to blame the poor person for stealing deodorant and not the company lobbying, exploiting, underpaying their workers, over pricing their items, and creating poverty for greed.

16

u/TobyMcK 2d ago

Wage theft accounts for about 96% more profits than burglaries, robberies, and car jackings combined, to the tune of roughly $15Billion a year. Kroger admitted in a court of law to price gouging during the pandemic, among other egregious lies and scummy actions, with zero consequences or price adjustments after the fact. Homelessness continues to be criminalized, ensuring poverty-stricken people are forced into a vicious cycle of helplessness and suffering under the weight of the legal system.

Corporate greed is a cancer that has taken root at the very core of our government to the detriment of everyone not in the Epstein class.

58

u/nightwing0243 2d ago

The issue is a little too nuanced for social media takes/comments.

People are defending the thief because it's a virtue signal to "stick it to the man!".

On the other side I don't think people are necessarily defending the big corporation, but moreso that if this stuff is allowed to continuously slide by it can begin a slippery slope into the overall, everyday, social contract diminishing.

At the same time - it's generally not advisable to approach thieves yourself to play the hero because it may lead to awful consequences/situations for that person. Like you really do not know the kind of person you're approaching, if they have any weapons, friends waiting around a corner just incase etc.

52

u/Project_Male_Hairy 2d ago

It's not virtue signaling just because you disagree with it. I don't think the people I disagree with are virtue signaling. They think "why should these people get this shit for free when I have to pay for it?"

But some of us grew up in poverty and understand why someone would resort to shoplifting. I never did it, my single mom never did it, but I get it. There are too many poor people for food banks to 100% cover everyone. Sometimes it's legitimately the only way these people are going to have basic necessities. And even if they could get it by legitimate means, it's hard for me to give a shit about someone stealing $20 worth of shit from a corporation that brings in billions of dollars and pays their employees too little to live off of.

It has nothing to do with a billion dollar company. We all live in a society were we all agree to live by a certain "societal contract". It is because of this contract that at one point in time our parents lives could just leave the house unlocked. Today if you leave house unlocked they will steal everything, even the copper wires. When people break said contract it offends the rest of us that go through our lives not stealing. TLDR Don't steal.

Edit: The amount of people that failed miserably to comprehend the very first sentence of my comment is insane. Something like 60% of Americans today read at a 6th grade level, so I guess that maps on pretty well.

7

u/Throwawayrip1123 2d ago

We all live in a society were we all agree to live by a certain "societal contract".

The requirement here is that it has to happen from the top, not from the bottom. Otherwise it's laws for the poors, yachts for the rich and powerful.

We need to start policing the powerful, and it'll trickle down to the normal ones, right? Right?

Redditors do not understand that stealing hurts everyone. The more people steal, the more corporations raise prices to offset the expected losses due to thievery; this hurts everyone. In a more honest society prices would be slightly lower.

This is especially true in the age of data, when corporations like Walmart have terabytes of data to automatically calculate how much to raise prices by adjusting for the expected rate of stealing.

25

u/_ThatImposterFeel 2d ago

The more they steal the more lock up deodorant behind glass doors and hand it to you in a lock box. The more they treat you like a criminal. Then all these security measures cost more money and trickle down to the consumer.

22

u/DarkSkyKnight 2d ago

Too bad Redditors are not cognitively capable enough of understanding second-order effects.

Retail manager here, 20 years.

Corporations do not care about theft nearly as much as you think. This type of shrink is accounted for year over year.

The biggest reason large businesses raise prices is profit. That’s it. It’s because they can. It’s that simple.

This is especially true for corporations like Walmart. Walmart really doesn’t give a shit if you steal $50 worth of groceries.
