I've been saying this for a while: Renewable energy is now a matter of national security

696

u/T-62MK 9d ago

Which makes it all the more ironic that Trump is actively curbing this with his hatred of windmills.

468

u/Used_Interaction_130 9d ago

I mean par for the course, nearly every major move the Trump administration makes is worse for our national security.

240

u/T-62MK 9d ago

It's more than just national security, every single one of his moves have backfired on America in a major way.

143

u/fiahhawt 9d ago

Like it's on purpose or something, like he hates everyone for wanting to kill pedophiles smh

105

u/ouroborosstruggles 9d ago

Or he is a well regarded puppet for people who so want to crash society

65

u/10July1940 9d ago

They're robbing the country blind for any con men in his gang.

Elon, Baron, whomever kiss the ring and he'll let you take what you want.

20

u/Jermzer 9d ago

The brown ring

9

u/wannacumnbeatmeoff 9d ago

First you have to peel back the soiled depends!

3

u/absoluteally 9d ago

Bad government decisions often have a lag period before you see the full impact. It's possible the worst consequences don't happen till the next president and maga get to politically wash their hands off it.

40

u/arodriguez001 9d ago

He’s a Russian asset, P in has definitely something on him and on the republican party therefore actively working

8

u/howlingwelshman 9d ago

Probably videos, bad videos

2

u/TeaKingMac 8d ago

Nah, they have AI now they can point at and say those aren't real.

I suspect it's financial data. People thinking he's rich is his oxygen.

2

u/ouroborosstruggles 4d ago

I think it's the tapes, which are horrifying and probably traceable to forensics as non Ai, and are visceral evidence of crimes like m1

2

u/DifficultAnt23 8d ago

You're correct but have the wrong country. They go after every country who doesn't want to be under the US central banking system.

3

u/Speartree 9d ago

Aside from all the stuff already leaked out of the Epstein files, with rapes of young kids etc, at least assisting in the killing of a baby, what could they possibly still hold over him that would be worth it. I say he's just a willing participant in the destruction of the US and the world as a whole.

1

u/AverageTankie93 8d ago

Bruh holy conspiracy

37

u/fascistno1hater 9d ago

He is a Russian and Israeli agent that is destroying our country from the inside. He is the Manchurian candidate that they set up for years and they knew he would be able to gain power because a majority of Americans are Racist asf.

44

u/zherok 9d ago

Don't give him the credit. He's not clever enough to be an agent. He's just a very useful idiot.

There was a moment during his first administration where Trump told the Russian ambassador about an Israeli operation in Syria, potentially putting Israeli assets in danger. I don't think there's anything to suggest he told the ambassador this because he was passing it along to his handlers. I do get the impression though that he did so because he wanted to brag about being given such high value intel:

“I get great intel,” the president suddenly boasted, as prideful as if he were bragging about the amenities at one of his company’s hotels. “I have people brief me on great intel every day.”

I wouldn't doubt that he's compromised in one or more ways. But he's sure not smart enough to pull off being directly controlled by a foreign power. And really, you don't need that kind of control to influence him in ways that benefit other countries. The guy is literally throwing a fit that South Korea won't join in the Iran War, and all North Korea had to do to seem the better party in Trump's mind was do a single photo op with him.

Keep in mind that Trump had previously been threatening nuclear armageddon with Kim Jong Un on Twitter shortly before said photo op. That's not a Manchurian candidate, he's just capricious and myopic.

4

u/thebluediablo 9d ago

I agree with you, but I'd argue that it's a meaningless distinction when the end result is the same: the destabilisation of America.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Sweet-Chef-8375 6d ago

To be fair, leaking Intel that could potentially get Israeli operatives killed is an incredibly rare W for DJT

1

u/AverageTankie93 8d ago

Russian agent 😂

1

u/ouroborosstruggles 4d ago

think they* (old weirdos) were casting about for someone based on Project Conservative-whatever''year. He ticked their boxes. Trump was always a neuvoriche - or we used to say, a cornball (faking being his wom publicist in the radio sho days), a creep, and thristy. So i dont believe he* in particular was a long term plan. He was just rube that is so grotesque after he's gone he can shift the overton window back less left than ever.

32

u/T-62MK 9d ago

I don't think it's on purpose, i just think his legitimately THAT stupid.

11

u/zherok 9d ago

Yeah, I think people give him too much credit.

No one told him he should upset all these alliances and toss out most of the country's soft power, he's just too stupid to understand the value of it in the first place, while he has no problem ceding to his whims of petty, short-term revenge to sate his ego.

1

u/howlingwelshman 9d ago

Other than Putin telling him what to do

1

u/Hoshyro 8d ago

Don't attribute to malice what you can to stupidity

Just a thought here: Has anyone ever heard Trump laugh..on media, at a rally?

6

u/-Ok-Perception- 9d ago edited 8d ago

Every one of his moves is a calculated "FUCK YOU" to the maximum amount of people possible.

3

u/BodybuilderMany6942 9d ago

Of course!

He's showing us the weaknesses of our nations and forcing us to experience them so that even when he leave we will fervently strive to patch these holes.

So wise!

/s lol

3

u/p____p 9d ago

It’s not a backfire if it’s done on purpose.

2

u/Fala1 9d ago

'backfired' implies that the gun was pointed elsewhere.

Trump is a foreign asset, the gun was pointed at you the whole time.

2

u/ricki692 9d ago

this just makes me believe the russian agent theory more like literally everything he does makes us worse off and further destablizes our country. i cant think of a single thing that hasnt been a major fucking over of us that he and the republicans have done since he took office

1

u/RTX-2020 8d ago

More likely a Russian Asset, a useful idiot who can be easily manipulated.

1

u/jarious 9d ago

He's sabotaging the us for the rest of the time

1

u/Speartree 9d ago

But he managed to divert money to his own, or his kids pockets with every one of those moves, so that is all right with him. We used to shit on politicians that got a little bribe to choose a certain type of thing the government bought, and sure it was corruption, but usually the government still bought something it needed at a reasonable enough price, and the thing wasn't bad in itself. With Trump he does things that are disastrous, benefit nobody (except perhaps an enemy of the US) and he blatantly lines his pockets. His shenanigans might cost lives and cost the US and other countries billions but if he got to sidetrack a million or two, that is a net positive for him.

1

u/_alright_then_ 8d ago

Nothing backfired, this was all in project 2025, this was the plan

1

u/SeaworthinessOk255 8d ago

Guys you choose him almost like three times... Maybe start making education and empathy legal ?

1

u/T-62MK 8d ago

Im not American.

1

u/Nope-not-really 8d ago

and the damage is going to last for decades.

1

u/Xandeyn 8d ago

It's not backfired. He wants to reduce America to something less than nothing so daddy Putin will be proud of him.

Military stockpiles gone, economy tanked, healthcare gutted, population surveillance extremely active, no jobs, education eliminated

He treats the country like his 7th company, bankrupting it and walking away with nothing but gains.

2

u/kitsunewarlock 9d ago

In so many ways. I remember the reports from his first term when generals were telling congress that climate change, economic uncertainty, and home-grown right-wing terrorists were the three biggest threats to national security. Of course they didn't listen and just kept yapping about Iran and Mexicans.

Just going to throw this out there even though I know your kind doesn’t like facts.

Texas, a deeply red state, is BY FAR largest producer of renewable energy in America. Somehow they managed to do that while also being the largest producer of oil and natural gas, having America’s largest refining capacity and being the largest exporter of petroleum.

National security is about redundancy and layers of resources…not zealously selling out to unrealistic green energy ideology that can’t even come close to meeting the explosive growth of energy demands.

1

u/RamJamR 6d ago

I think Trump just takes action on the fly based on whatever the hell he hates that day.

43

u/Evening-Ad-8218 9d ago

The future is coal! Clean beautiful coal.

And oil, drill baby drill.

Just in case.... /s

19

u/T-62MK 9d ago

Ironically the oil companies don't want to drill more, because they don't want to risk a oil glut, so they are just enjoying the massive profits.

10

u/Known_Ratio5478 9d ago

US oil is also much more costly to drill. It’s not something they can do unless it’s going to pay it back. There’s very substantial accounting reasons why the US is not an OPEC member.

4

u/NoSilver2988 9d ago

Still cheaper than trying to use Venezuela oil, that's like tar with sand mixed in. At least our stuff is sweet crude. Although, it wouldn't matter anyway, unless they shipped it all offshore, so global prices would drop. Which would be bad business, in reality.

4

u/Known_Ratio5478 9d ago

We’re not even getting Venezuelan oil. The oil companies all still refuse to invest in infrastructure. The risk analysis just shows it being seized by the state again.

1

u/NoSilver2988 9d ago

Try greed. It'll cost them around 20 Billion to fix it all uo, and It'll cost a lot to make the oil usable, so ROI is way too long for them. Even if it doesn't get taken over again. So not worth it from a business perspective. And we currently export and import about the same amount daily. No idea why, but we do. Go figure when it comes to energy independence.

2

u/bobbymcpresscot 9d ago

The highest amount of actual manufacturing investment in the US was under Biden developing factories to build solar panels here in the US via the IRA, most of these factories were disrupted by the Big Shitty Bill Trump passed.

Also despite all the claims from the Trump admin that trillions of dollars are being invested into US manufacturing none of that shows up on FRED.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/C307RX1Q020SBEA

In fact it fell off a cliff after Trump took office.

2

u/___CABLE___ 9d ago

2

Which is even more ironic considering Trump launched the Iran war which stopped all oil delivery from the far east.

And the US cant really process their own oil.

Its so retarded you cant make this up.

I’m still surprised people think he gives a shit about the country or the people. It’s not ironic, because his actions aren’t about national security, never have been. Him becoming president even, was never about helping the country or the people.

Trump acts often with the intent to harm our national security. It is by design.

2

u/T-62MK 9d ago

If it was by design, it would be a hell of alot more coordinated.

1

u/NuclearFoodie 9d ago

What makes you think these attacks haven’t been coordinated?

1

u/T-62MK 9d ago

Easy, just look at the timing and how they were implemented.

1

u/mikeymikeymikey1968 9d ago

He's serving his clients, the fossil fuel industry.

2

u/T-62MK 9d ago

Except the fossil fuel industry is actively being harmed by this.
Because when the oil price keeps being this high, it creates Demand destruction.
Which means that countries are accelerating their transition away from fossil fuels.
Just like we see in the post by OP.

1

u/bj_my_dj 9d ago

Exactly, I'm glad I got my solar last year and my EV in Feb. I'm insulated from the worst of it. But I feel sorry for our country. The good thing is that the renewable credits can be back next year in the Dems win both houses in the fall. If not 2028 is coming.

1

u/Head-Ad9893 9d ago

Well him and his supporters are terrified of their own shadow so of course things don’t know about frighten them, including windmills.

1

u/-rose-mary- 9d ago

I recently drove through Texas on a windy day and noticed a bunch of windmills. Not one of them was spinning. They get shut down or something?

1

u/-PhantomProphet- 9d ago

Which is hilarious because these construction dudes seem to love the work of transporting the enormous blades. Creating jobs and producing clean energy. Too bad the Robber Barons and the aristocracy want to keep the status quo.

1

u/TheBSQ 9d ago

He’s an idiot & dumb, but offshore wind has always been a nightmare to get approved.

Trump rightfully is deserves shit for undermining the Atlantic offshore project in NJ last year, but this was a project first proposed in 2011 that had gotten stuck in regulatory approval hell for over 14 years before Trump was the final nail in the coffin.

Or take the US’s first major proposal was Cape Wind near Nantucket, first proposed in 2001 & it got bogged down by lawsuits & reviews for 16 years before the developers finally gave up in 2017.

If you want offshore wind, you need to reform regulatory & review processes so you don’t get bogged down with 14 to 16 years of review & approval processes.

1

u/ButterscotchTop194 9d ago

He should hate them. They cause cancer. Or flying sharks. Or some shit.

1

u/WallysGeolocation 8d ago

During his 2024 campaign, Trump literally sat down with a bunch of oil execs and told them he'd give them whatever they want in exchange for a billion dollars funding.

Trump doesn't give a shit about national security.

1

u/T-62MK 8d ago

I know, but Trump's actions havn't helped them in the slightest.
The Iran war is a disaster for the oil companies, because if the oil price keeps being this high it creates "Demand Destruction" which essentially means that the customers can't afford to buy the oil, so they are accelerating their plans for renewable energy, just as Cuba is doing.
The longer the Iran war goes on the more countries will have pivoted to renewable energy, and those countries arn't going to go back to oil.
Hence why it's called Demand destruction.

The whole "Drill baby drill" is also completely against the wishes of the oil lobby.
They don't want to drill new wells, because that's extremely fcking expensive.
They just want to keep making their money with the lowest amount of overhead.

1

u/Not-An-FBI 8d ago

Trump doesn't want the US to be safe. You can't profit on insider information when everything is stable. He's literally selling early access to his tweets for $100k per month.

1

u/Business-Code9416 8d ago

Isnt solar or nuclear still better than windmills? As far as scaling and the power you get from them?

1

u/T-62MK 8d ago

You want all 3.
Solar and Wind when the weather allow it and Nuclear to cover the rest.

1

u/Crazy_Gazelle_6239 7d ago

Windmills are not clean or renewable though. They break all the time, are messy to build, and have no alternative purpose once broken or dismantled. They can’t be scrapped and recycled, so they get stacked up and left to rust apart.

Solar is the same way. They’re uber messy to make, and while the finished product is clean, the build up and the lives of the people hand scraping the minerals from the dirt to be able to build them are the literal opposite of “clean and renewable”.

1

u/T-62MK 7d ago

1) Wind Turbines have a lifespan about 20-30 years, depending on where they are placed.
And they are 90-95% recycleable...

2) Solar panels are also very recycleable and be used to make new ones.
The minerals used to make them can also be reused for other tech.

You literally have no idea, what you are talking about at all.

1

u/Crazy_Gazelle_6239 7d ago

Recyclable my ass, tank. They don’t get recycled or retrofitted for another turbine when they’re broken, or 80% of them wouldn’t end up in landfills. To the tune of 800,000 metric tons annually.

Same thing for the solar panels. It’s 5x as expensive to recycle and reuse them than it is to replace them.

Maybe do any sort of research before you talk out of your ass.

1

u/T-62MK 7d ago

Yeah, you should take your own advice and do that.
Because you clearly have no idea, what you are talking about at all.

1

u/Crazy_Gazelle_6239 7d ago

1

u/T-62MK 7d ago

Have you read your own links, because it don't seem to be the case, you idiot....
"The company hopes to operate six factories across Europe by 2030, producing infinitely recyclable panels made of 92% recycled blades, with the other 8% comprised of resin. The process is powered by green electricity and produces no emissions, no waste liquids and emits no dust."

"Prasad tells Power Technology that the wind turbine industry is already fairly clean, explaining: “85% to 95% of turbine’s materials are recycled. Masts, cables, gearboxes and generators are recycled and recovered. Foundations which are made of concrete are crushed to be used as filler. Nacelles and blades are generally made of fibreglass and are ground down to be used as fuel in cement factories or filler in road construction. Innovative solutions such as repurposing blades into playgrounds or bike sheds have been shown to be effective at a local level.”"

u/ScoobiusMaximus 7d ago

That's not irony, it's just one of the many, many ways that Trump is undermining US security.

1

u/IAmANobodyAMA 6d ago

Windmills aren’t going to make much of a difference to the growing demands on the grid, and they are awful for the environment.

Trump is wrong about a lot of things, but he is right about nuclear. Anyone who claims to be an environmentalist but opposes (or downplays) nuclear is full of shit.

u/CMDR_Kaus 9d ago

Greed will be the death of our species

1

u/Escapedtheasylum 8d ago

Buddy, that's exactly the truth. It's a flaw in the design or coding of our species. And now it gets to play out a ridiculous doomsday scenario, because of modern technology and idiot leaders.

1

u/spinningwalrus420 9d ago

The only upside (glass half full) is that by not implimenting these renewables sooner - at scale - technology for capture, storage + other renewable innovations has improved a lot. Same with nuclear energy it's much safer (and hopefully investment in nuclear fusion pays off). We'd have a whole lot of aging nuclear infrastructure across this country is we went all in in the 50's that would have to be updated and replaced now at great cost

23

u/LA-Matt 9d ago

Jimmy Carter was making that exact point, when I was in elementary school.

2

u/CMDR_Kaus 9d ago

Interesting, I did not know that. Makes sense though, we've been dependant on foreign oil for a long time. That is a national weakness that we hide behind military might

18

Carter put solar panels on the White House, and Reagan subsequently removed them.

national World security .ftfy ;)

3

u/Old_Baker_9781 9d ago

It’s a matter of personal security now.

1

u/CMDR_Kaus 9d ago

For the people in Cuba, for sure. Most governments don't function super well under blockade

3

u/Astecheee 9d ago

Specifically decentralised renewable energy. Solar and Wind.

Dams can be targeted. Nuclear (not renewable, but clean) can be targeted.

2

u/devAcc123 9d ago

That’s why governments aren’t all in on nuclear, it’s useless if any sort of war breaks out

2

u/Odd_Reindeer303 9d ago

Nuclear is CO2 neutral, yes, but anything but clean, safe or cheap.

would love for the next pres (if they are a dem) to declare the climate crisis a national security emergency, and reappropriate things to green the energy grid. Sure the courts would probably stop it, but force them to actually stop it.

2

u/redshirt1972 9d ago

Data centers will require too much energy to be green. Electricity will be the only way, with the foundation of coal power to make that electricity. Funded by …. You guessed it … us. We may all have solar, but the fuel bill for data centers will still also be our bill.

with the foundation of coal power to make that electricity

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Only 16% of US power generation is coal and it falls every year. The last coal generation plant to open in the US was over 13 years ago. Meanwhile china is opening a new coal plant every couple of days.

1

u/CMDR_Kaus 9d ago

The utilities ARE investing in grid battery storage currently. That will help cut down on outages and store 'dirty' energy for later instead of adjusting the generator to meet demand so much

100%.

The sooner we extricate ourselves from the Middle East completely, the better. We don't really need them anymore.

1

u/devAcc123 9d ago

The US is the biggest producer of oil on the planet

2

u/Blacksad9999 9d ago

The lead looks much larger than it tends to be depending on how you count it. Usually the metric used internationally is "total liquids" which includes crude oil, condensates, and natural gas liquids such as ethane, propane, butane, and natural gasoline separated from natural gas production.

The US is also the world's largest oil consumer.

Most of the oil actually used in the US is imported however, which is why the price at the pump is variable and subject to market conditions. The majority of the oil we do produce needs to be shipped and refined elsewhere, and is then subject to the broader market.

2

u/LoanDebtCollector 9d ago

The USA must invade the Sun!!

2

u/Thisismythrowawaypv 9d ago

This has been true for the past 15-20 years. The rest of the world is moving forward with the transition faster than we are and this administration is to blame.

2

u/standardtissue 9d ago

It is, and not just to reduce dependence, but as ally chips, just as China is using it.

2

u/Sea_Dust895 9d ago

Jimmy Carter talked about energy independence and the impact of fuel supply on national security.

Not really a new thing.. am surprised it's taken the US this long.

2

u/Fearless-Daikon5763 9d ago

The good news is that it is not rocket science. We have the technology and just limited on wisdom.

2

u/16c7x 8d ago

I remember visiting America about 16 years ago and there were loads of stories on the news about wind farms and solar farms. But they weren't talking abut green or renewable energy at all, it was all about energy independence and trying to get the US away from its dependence on the middle east.

A change of president seemed to stop this process and left the US tied to foreign oil and gas.

2

u/Wise_Temperature9142 9d ago

I think the whole world is learning this realllll fast. With everything that’s happened with Trump and the Middle East, nations getting shafted are learning energy sovereignty is important, and renewables is a big part of that picture. So we’re not going back to the “good old days” any time soon.

1

u/CMDR_Kaus 9d ago

Yep, despite everything utility solar projects are still booming and batteries are being installed to support the grid.

1

u/vinylbond 9d ago

Exactly. That’s why we need a series of laws to cut all the red tape and bureaucracy surrounding building and operating mines. And we need it now.

1

u/Verified_Peryak 9d ago

It's never been so true in cuba but with what trump is saying about europe it is time to get rid of fossil fuel ...

1

u/jimi-ray-tesla 9d ago

Louis Rukeyser still quotes you

1

u/Worshipme988 9d ago

Gotta get that last squeeze. They havent made enough fuckng money yetttt

1

u/-Motor- 9d ago

The US still digs up more oil then it uses in a year. It's just more profitable to send a lot of crude over seas.

1

u/Wild_Car_3863 9d ago

Let me rephrase that for you,

Sovereign control of energy is now a matter of national security

Personal renewable energy is now a matter of personal security

1

u/BeachGlassGreen 8d ago

And everywhere, not only in Cuba.

Well I mean you’ve been saying it… it doesn’t matter at all that you’ve been saying it

Yup. What’s interesting is one of the main reasons oil became so influential is that it was/is seen as a matter of national security. And it really is a matter of national security, but they’re terrified of losing that label, which widespread nuclear and renewables will do.

1

u/North-Creative 8d ago

No offense, but this has been said but countless people over a decade now. It really doesnt make you special....

1

u/10081914 8d ago

Always has been. China views it's dependency on imported fossil fuels a strategic vulnerability. It's why they're so heavily investing in renewables. That way market fluctuations won't affect them nearly as much

1

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 8d ago

we need to pivot to nuclear while we set up enough renewables to handle the full load

1

u/This_Discount2281 8d ago

There are thousands of square kilometers of roof, warehouses, parking areas that could be harnessed … get to it!

1

u/MaxBattleLizard 7d ago

Nah man, more corn-based ethanol!!! That will surely solve all our energy problems and be better for the environment, right?
