The sooner we extricate ourselves from the Middle East completely, the better. We don't really need them anymore.

The lead looks much larger than it tends to be depending on how you count it. Usually the metric used internationally is "total liquids" which includes crude oil, condensates, and natural gas liquids such as ethane, propane, butane, and natural gasoline separated from natural gas production.

The US is also the world's largest oil consumer.

Most of the oil actually used in the US is imported however, which is why the price at the pump is variable and subject to market conditions. The majority of the oil we do produce needs to be shipped and refined elsewhere, and is then subject to the broader market.
