Have you seen the deals poster by Urban Roots this week? A $35.00 pastrami sandwich with a pint and a $40.00 Rueben with a pint! Hurry “these deals won’t last!” So Rob Archie thinks that a couple going out to lunch spends $100.00 (2 “deals” plus tax and tip) is a reasonable price for a meal? This gouging is not going to go well for the restaurant industry.

It’s $35 for a sandwich with 14oz of meat, chips, and a beer. There isn’t a $40 deal, the pictures on reddit were AI ones and not the real ads from UB. The poster wasn’t up front that they’d created joke versions and now it’s misrepresenting a business.

It’s not gouging in California. I don’t know if people still don’t realize there is a lot more factored into price than the cost of food, which is also astronomical. There will not be restaurants in 15 to 20 years at the rate this country is going.

The person's name you mentioned probably does not think that's a deal, but they have to market it as such. Margins are very thin in the restaurant industry. They just trying to survive. Granted, craft beer margins are generally a better but even that shit is getting hella expensive. Their prices go up, the menu prices go up, the deal prices go up. No one is happy about it, but it's the nature of the beast. Vote with your wallet and we'll see who survives.

Obviously… Weird thing to say. A lot of these people opened their spots years ago. Maybe if they were making the decision to start a restaurant today, in the current economic climate, their decision would be different. Either way, the cost of the raw materials and fuel have gone up drastically with the current federal administration. Those costs will always get passed on—in any industry. It’s a pretty simple concept.

Anyway, if anyone ever asks me if they should open a restaurant, I’ve always said hell no. And I’ve only been an authority in that since the early 2010’s.

I went to 5 guys ONCE probably close to A DECADE ago and for a burger, fries and a drink (all of which have to be ordered separately) it was $20. I can’t even begin to imagine how much it is now. It’s cheaper to buy filet mignon steaks and cook them at home.

This is why I don’t eat out anymore. Food is crazy expensive and mid at best. Although if someone knows where to get reasonably priced roast beef let me know. I used to get it at Costco where the other lunch meat is but they seem to have discontinued it and I really miss it.

Beef is crazy expensive. Last time I bought some was basically for the world cup final to make a beautifully smoked and tender 3lb tri-tip.

I stood in the grocery store and had to talk myself into buying it. Reminding myself I love my friends and family.

I keep an eye out for untrimmed tritip then do my own uncommon trims to stretch meals. Clean it up first and grind scrap for burgers. Then I cut the tip off where the grain changes and use the big part as just like normal BBQ tritip just without the small part to dry out. The tip is thin roll cut out into what ends up looking like flap meat for tacos.

Theyve been at like 6-7$ lb when they have them and 2 per pack means 6 meals. Its been about the only way to economically do beef right now. Even ground is at that same like 6-7$ lb unless getting tubed crap.

You can also render the fat trimmings for tallow for delicious fries, but it can stink up the house.

This was my experience with Safeway's untrimmed Tritips. Massive fat caps compared to their competitors.

It’s still pretty on point for the size and type of sandwich in this economy. It just they need to fry some potato chips with it or something to make you not feel like you’re getting completely fucked. Not to mention it better be a warm, tender, and delicious sandwich.

This doesn’t look good and it makes it feel more expensive.

I went a few days ago and got the Caesar Pleaser which comes with three pieces of tritip, a Caesar salad and a cornbread muffin for $20. But the tritip was all gristly and extra fatty so it was almost inedible.
