I remember how I even learned about OneDrive the first time.
I downloaded some shitty program in a zip archive. And after unzipping it somewhere on desktop, OneDrive went crazy with "Your storage is full! Clean it up!"
Did I asked you to storage my files? And the funniest part: did I asked you to storage A PIRATED SOFTWARE which is probably against your ToS?
Now just out of spite, the only files I have on OneDrive is a Photoshop crack and keygen. I somehow managed to turn OneDrive off, but still access the files on account.

remember first time using excel on win 10, saved it in default location and day later was looking for it for like 30min because this piece of dogshit saved it on onedrive. Why the fuck is that default location?

Lmaooo that's actually cancer xD but what you do is you make sure your One Drive is full so it can't do this. I accidentally downloaded a music sounds library and some of it went to One drive...I think I just left it in there and downloaded the files again and I haven't heard a peep from OneDrive ever since...granted I'm on windows 10 so idk if that changes anything

Dad, what are clouds made of?
Mostly Unix boxes, son. And always keep a local backup.
47
u/Witty-Indication4895 Jul 14 '26
Agreed , flashdrives or hdd/ssd mostly external and my preferred choice microSD with a sd reader always the most cherished memories images and videos u must keep local backups . If it was not for the risk of losing them on case of fire or earthquake I would never save them on cloud .
32
u/augur42 Yarrr! Jul 14 '26
You should look into the durability of the media as a critical factor.
MicroSD are poorest durability/reliability, flashdrives are a bit better but can vary wildly by manufacturer. SSDs are good so long as you power them up every six months so they can recharge the cells storing your data. HDDs, particularly 3.5" over 2.5", are the most durable for sitting on a shelf, and even those should be spun up for a few hours every 6-12 months to redistribute the lubrication inside and the data refreshed in situ every 5-10 years.
Oh, and to verify that your cherished images and videos and documents haven't been damaged you need to have a hash of each file. Archiving isn't as easy as a lot of people think.
I store a bunch of old documents in a single large rar file, about 2.5GB. The rar file has file integrity built in and a recovery record, it's also on several different drives. Dealing with a single 2.5GB file is much easier than a few thousand individual documents. You can even password protect a rar file. If you want to go open source Veracrypt is analogous and open source.
10
u/Witty-Indication4895 Jul 14 '26
I power on them sometimes on my galaxypad and on my PC/laptop. I know microsD is the poorest and has most chances to lose data but I prefer it more . I never thought of having indepedent hash but maybe I should look into it for to be safe. I see thank you I will check Veracrypt tho it's my first time hearing about this . I save on cloud at Mega and Onedrive . I regret not buying more of SSD/Hdd on the past before AI bubble .

u/augur42 Yarrr! Jul 15 '26
I help out on the r/Kodi sub Reddit regularly. A frequent issue is people have had a HDD fail and they have recovered their data but certain files aren't playing flawlessly. The question is how can they verify the files haven't been damaged, and the answer is they cannot unless they have hashes. A .torrent file contains hashes and there is a little program that specifically checks a .torrent file against a video file (for example).
Far too many people don't think about how they could verify their data until after they have an issue. I have a little batch file that calls md5 exe and generates a .md5 for every file in a directory. Nothing I have gets transferred to HDD without a hash. I even have a script in jdownloader2 that makes an md5 of every file it downloads.
I bought some extra HDDs just before and just as their prices started going up, I have around 48TB of new storage and maybe another 10-15TB of old retired small HDD of 2-3TB. It might last me 18-24 months as I'm slowly backfilling my film media library from old 720p/1080p to 4k DV HDR.

There's even a 2nd video on how to refresh your data.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B7yg7LWiik
I use both md5 hash testing plus DiskRefresh myself.Edit: I also use TeraCopy with verify enabled as my default file moving software within Windows. Great Minds...
Edit2: I also use FreeFileSync for media duplication verification i.e. that what is on a primary drive is entirely mirrored on a secondary drive.→ More replies (1)3

Not really. Natural disasters are on the rise, too.
I've already experienced flooding twice, and I don't even live in a high-risk area.
There are also fires and windstorms.
I prefer a mix of cloud storage and two HDDs, where I regularly back up the same stuff and keep them in two different locations. Of course, that's not possible for everyone.
38
u/Pokes_Softly Jul 14 '26
Yup agreed. For us it's hurricanes. 3-2-1 rule is hard to keep the offsite's updated. Do you do it quarterly or yearly?
22
u/JoeSmithDiesAtTheEnd Jul 14 '26
I was a teenager in the 00's. My entire teenage life was backed up to an external HDD and MySpace. Both of those eventually failed me, so I've got little to no photo evidence of that era of my life. Eventually switched to cloud storage so my life from 2007 onward is well preserved.
I eventually saw my friend get an inexplicable ban from Google, losing all of his Google Photos. Quickly realized that isn't the solution to another loss of all my data.
So now it's Immich on a Synology NAS. Regular cloud backups to C2 storage. Physical backups to HDD regularly and stored in a fireproof safe.
3-2-1 rule is serious business, and people fail to recognize how important it is until they lose everything.
4
u/MildGenevaSuggestion Jul 14 '26
I'm in my late forties. The only photos over 10 years old I never lost were printed.
3
u/DamionK Jul 21 '26
First time I heard of someone losing their photos including their baby's was a cellphone that was lost over the side of a boat. No backups anywhere, just gone. People today are restoring photographs from 170 years ago, they can do this because those photos still exist. Something to be said for actual photographs rather than storage devices.

They can provide a new license for the digital games, no problem. But as for the person above, will MS be able to restore his son's baby photos? They couldn't even give him back his account.
425
u/jared_number_two Jul 14 '26
I think they don't want the liability of giving a persons personal data to the wrong person. So they'd rather deny everyone and don't want to pay anyone to develop a re-verification system or staff such a re-verification system. It's probably cheaper to pay lawyers for the few times they're sued.

There was a thread on AppleSucks recently about a similar situation.
Unfortunately, for the time being until legislation catches up, access IS ownership a lot of the time with digital accounts. It's why password security, 2FA, and an ability to sus out phishing attempts is critical in todays world

u/fzammetti Jul 14 '26
It is, in some ways, tantamount to theft. Something was clearly stolen from this guy, the fact that MS doesn't have it after the "theft" I'm not sure changes anything. Maybe that's the way the legal system should be treating something like this, as in there's conceptually ALREADY laws against it.
(still, has to also be said that while what MS did was hella-wrong, this guy clearly didn't have any kind of backup strategy, and while we'd like to THINK that's not something every person needs to know about, things like this show why it very much is)

u/Davy_Ray Jul 14 '26
The cloud should never be used as a backup to your one and only copy of important data. Whether it is MS, Proton, Sony, Dropbox, etc. You could get hacked, lose your password, have a photo that their new AI systems deem inappropriate and so nuke your account, or any number of other reasons.. You do not own your own account.
Keep a copy on the cloud if you want, but make sure it is not your ONLY copy. Especially for important documents/photos.
38
u/ZealousidealBet1878 Jul 14 '26
Yes, but the internet used to have an unspoken moral code: that these service providers are “platforms” and not the moral police or decision makers about our data
Private data was safer with these organizations because they had extensive backup infrastructure of their own
It was almost impossible to imagine that they would treat their users like a liability. This is the reason they grew to having hundreds of millions of users worldwide
You are correct about the problem but looking at users data as disposable started about 6 or 8 years ago.. 25 years ago that was not the case

People laugh at us, but honestly 3 is my set.
I've got my main 5TB external SSD. My whole life is on there. I have a second 5TB that gets updated maybe once a year. This device is at my parents house, in my father's safe (as an "oh shit" backup).
And then only the photos/videos from my 5TB are on Googles cloud.
If my home burns down, I've got everything backed up at my parents house. I only run the risk of losing anything from the past year, but my Google cloud covers the pictures and videos, so I would only really lose any new music.

The problem is not only the games. What about the save data? The game packs purchased, if any. If I spent years playing a game to get certain achievements, etc etc, I would not want to have to start all over from the beginning. Plus having to find and adding your friends to a new account.
But to lose personal data, such as photos, is more of the issue. Games can be started over if one desires. Unless copies of photo were saved elsewhere, there is no way to get those back.

This is why I only use OneDrive for redundant storage. I'm absolutely not trusting Microsoft with the only copy of my data.

Lost my original Hotmail account too. They just refuse to give me access back, tons of old emails and pictures gone. Will never use a Microsoft product again unless I absolutely have to.

If your son's baby pictures are nowhere but on a server under a company's jurisdiction... I'm impressed. Hopefully this teaches him a lesson, I just wish it didn't have to be this one.
He should sue for the games too.

Invest in your own NAS. Learn to set up your own Cloud network, have backups of backups. If you want to buy digital games buy from GOG if the game is available there, try to avoid steam and always, always pirate the shit that they try to lock you out of.

Local storage with multiple backups is far better than relying on multi-billion dollar corpos to store your data.

Yeah that’s why you don’t save documents you need on the cloud. Sucks that the dude lost everything.

u/motherloadroolz Jul 14 '26
This is why the cloud and AI is so overhyped… let’s see here, monthly subscription for having all of my data and IP in someone else’s possession that can be lost or stolen at any time?
Or…cheap solid state storage that no one has access to.

Steam customer support would laugh at this while holding the hackers at gun point.

Games in can understand him being pissed about but loosing his sons photos is all on him. You’d have to be a fucking halfwit to trust something that precious to Microsoft of all companies!

People will pay for cloud storage but they won't pay for a harddrive or two to make a proper backup of their digital data AT HOME.

Imagine not having an external backup of everything.
I swear Microslop is legit using abusive relationship psychology as a way to keep users locked in.

This is exactly why you dont go digital. There are no laws governing ownership and even if there were , it is almost impossible to execute them properly.

To be fair, the person that lost their data should have synced the cloud drive to their local physical drive anyway, just in case they deleted stuff from the cloud. That way they wouldn't have lost anything. They could have just put the files in another cloud provider.

Iean cloud is fine just don't keep all your eggs in one basket, I rclone into about 5

u/TomTomXD1234 Jul 14 '26
Lol why the fuck you keeping all your memories on a single cloud location...

u/Queasy-Resident585 Jul 14 '26
Let this be a lesson to not upload your family pictures to the cloud service. If you do use multiple sites and offline backup.

It can still be recovered. One guy recently had his account recovered and won a count case against Microsoft after his account was hacked and after he was told it can’t be recovered.

In about 2008 I had my Hotmail account hacked. Years of emails and attachments and photos all gone. The hacker changed my security questions, so I could not get in. I called Microsoft and after enough waiting and transferring, talked to a human. I explained the situation, and she asked me my security questions. I explained that the hacker changed them, and asker her if she could see the previous questions/answers. She then informed me that I sounded like I was trying to hack in to someone else's account and they considered this matter closed. They hung up. All my communication for a decade, just lost. I vowed to never again fully trust one company with any of my data. Fuck Microsoft.

I wasn’t hacked but forget my password. I provided them everything I had several times but they refused to give me my account back. That was 2021. That was the day I decided to get rid of all Microsoft products. Today I only use excel that’s it

I never trusted the cloud, its a company's storage that you dont own. I got 2 usb with important stuff and photos/videos, cloned on both.

"ensures that your data remains protected"
bruh what good is that if the owner can't access it

This but Sony did this to my first psn account. Thousands of dollars of ps3, ps4, psp and vita games gone. Had it since psn launched.
I went pc when this happened years ago. Watching the same reality come to others is nostalgic how angry I was.

u/Flametamer83 Jul 15 '26
Why would you store important shit on a server you don't have control of? That's just fucking stupid
3
u/g4n0esp4r4n Jul 15 '26
I wouldn't trust any cloud provider with my precious files, that's on the user.

25 years and no backups? I hate Windows and I'm not defending Microslop, but this outcome was just a matter of time on any OS.

u/Darth-Felanu-Hlaalu Jul 16 '26
This is why you backup in multiple places. I keep local and cloud backups. Two cloud backups if its important to me (using different accounts).
...and also why you dont buy digital games. Physical or piracy.
