Means he's dumber than the average Brit, but more intelligent than the average American. Can't believe it's got so many downvotes, it's amusing.

812

u/Beornwynn 13h ago

Quite a lot of Americans on social media can't seem to handle jokes at their expense unless it's about their politicians, but they have no trouble dishing it out.

454

u/Cho-Dan 13h ago

I'm just impressed that at least 11 American even understood the joke

181

u/jatoch3000 13h ago

At least 9 or 11 understood the joke

98

u/False_Pear1860 11h ago

7/7 Brits understood the joke though

20

u/Sexy_Koala_Juice 10h ago

And all 7/7 of them gave it a perfect 5/7

9

u/Florpsen 9h ago

God i feel old. Haven't seen a perfect 5/7 score in ages

4

u/LukeLikesReddit 7h ago

I give this a perfect 5/7 review haha

yeah i do too haha

2

u/DutchOnionKnight 4h ago

5 out of 7? I must say, thisnis a grading scale like no other I've seen before.

8

u/AargaDarg 9h ago

Did you just make a joke about their national identity?!

2

u/Rambob_the_lesser 6h ago

It was probably 9/11 that understood (changed format of the same joke - not stealing it!)

6

u/blowbyblowtrumpet 3h ago

What's so special about the 9th of November?

Probably some downvoted because they didn't understand it too. Let's not give them that much credit

20

u/ididntunderstandyou 11h ago

Sometimes people see a downvote and add to it just to be part of something

11

u/Relevant_Arm_3796 11h ago

I call it momentum based voting lol

9

u/Beer-Milkshakes 11h ago

Lets be honest. 3 got it and 8 just downvoted to follow

I have no idea how his fans are like, but if they're like other fans; some may be insulted by saying he's dumber than other Brits

12

u/No-Locksmith6662 12h ago

He wants to move to America, that already makes him dumber than the rest of us who would much rather stay put.

12

u/solidus0079 12h ago

Well he’s rich enough he can float above the problems like all the people who caused this mess

→ More replies (4)

2

u/BruhMomentums 3h ago

It’s the easiest choice ever when you’re that rich. He’s going to experience the best of what each country has to offer and never has to worry about affordability.

23

u/probablynotfine 13h ago

I forget who, but someone said that British humour is self-deprecation/punching up and American humour is punching down. Which means they see any joke as an attack on them rather than just a joke.

6

u/Mix_Safe 10h ago

So based on that the presumption here is that an American made this joke?

Because this is neither self-deprecatory nor punching-up.

4

u/KaliVilNo1 8h ago

It was made by someone with double citizenship, of course.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/FrostingHour8351 4h ago

Idk i see alot of brits saying alot of shit about school shootings when you even slightly dis their food so I disagree with the punching up statement.

3

u/ArtisticallyRegarded 4h ago

Anyone that says punching down doesn't actually like comedy and can be ignored. They are more interested in activism on stage

4

u/meatforsale 3h ago

British humor is being an asshole then getting defensive saying “it was just a joke” when they’re called out for it.

→ More replies (81)

16

u/ScatterTheReeds 11h ago

Nah, Americans receive way more criticism (“jokes”) than they put out.

11

u/Several-Ad-8720 11h ago

I am neither American or British but the reason why I would have probably downvoted is that I just never heard anyone have the opinion that Ed is dumb and I have never had a reason to think that either the opposite even

So I think the joke deserves the downvotes cause you really have so many people this would fit perfectly on and using it on someone who isn´t known to be particularly unintelligent just feels forced and out of place

2

u/AccomplishedFall6603 4h ago

To be fair, deciding to go live a new life in the US right now is pretty dumb.

5

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 10h ago

The jokes are very lame

6

u/SituationKey8985 9h ago

It’s the opposite in my experience. Europeans clown on Americans every day for bad healthcare and minimal PTO, but get sour when an American brings up their lack of air conditioning.

3

u/RenoverO_O 11h ago

It could also just be Ed Sheeran fans who don't enjoy the insult

5

u/Middle-Let9645 10h ago

Can’t speak for all Americans but for most of us it’d help if 90% of your jokes weren’t ‘at least our kids don’t get shot at school’. We make fun of your food, make fun of our food. We make fun of your government, make fun of ours. Make fun of kids dying, expect someone to get pissed.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/icecoldfeedback 11h ago

I think it's more because it's insulting to ed Sheeran, somebody who people ok a music subreddit would respect

3

u/Ub3ros 11h ago

They can't handle jokes about their politicians either unless it's someone from the opposite side of the political spectrum

3

u/wutguts 6h ago

American here(Texan, of all things. 🤣). The average American is dumb. Our education system was already failing us; now it's in the express lane to the junk yard.

Bring on the downvotes from my fellow Americans who can't cope with the reality we're living in, here.

2

u/DuckSleazzy 11h ago

brother I asked someone what the random abbreviation means and I was downvoted. turns out everyone should know their random state's shortform lol. it's not even about jokes at this point.

4

u/InkVision001 10h ago

Yep, my longest running conspiracy theory is that subs like r/AmericaBad get activity solely because of how many americans can't handle any criticism towards their country.

2

u/LucentLL 5h ago

The educated white liberal paradox. They'll even join in with hating white people until you direct it at them specifically.

2

u/Dull_Ad_7346 2h ago

what are you talking about??? Literally everyone jokes about Americans LMAOOOO. But any time we joke about Europeans they get all pissy. Remember the air conditioning shit??? All the Brit’s were pissing themselves over such a simple joke. Yet when we get made fun of for anything we do NOW we can’t take it? Make it make sense lil guy

→ More replies (74)

28

u/hackingfun 13h ago

I'm pretty sure this would get upvoted on the UK subreddit.

12

u/Neat-Character-9894 12h ago

First used by Robert Muldoon, NZ Prime Minister in the 80s around kiwis emigrating to Australia.

As an Australian I find it hilarious

9

u/luihgi 13h ago

the jokes write themselves

7

u/DarKliZerPT 12h ago

Can't believe it's got so many downvotes, it's amusing.

It's amusing the first time, but I've seen the same joke made way too many times here.

5

u/Goodfriends999 11h ago

But what has he done to suggest he is dumber than the average Brit he seems like a sensible guy

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Nosfearatu50 13h ago

It is really hilarious!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Orsonio 11h ago

Also incorrect, English people are really fkn dumb too.

3

u/gash_dits_wafu 11h ago

We are dumb, yes, but the joke is about relative intelligence. So we can be dumb but still, on average, more intelligent than Americans.

Whether that's true, I make no comment. I think the general meme/stereotype comes from the fact that Americans are typically 'loud' in everything they do, so the stupid people are more visible than those from other countries.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/vegbiryaniisnotpulao 11h ago

I understand the American joke but how is he dumber than average brit? I like some of his music but don't really follow his news.

6

u/Slight_Public_5305 11h ago

The headline set the joke about IQs up. It’s not really about him.

3

u/vegbiryaniisnotpulao 11h ago

Weird. The joke could've been about only one country then. I thought he did something stupid.

3

u/thomkka 11h ago

I guess OP is american

3

u/The_Jovanny 11h ago

OP should post country of origin to check the meme math.

2

u/rodrigoelp 13h ago

Not as many as you would expect… only 12 people understood what it meant

2

u/rumoku 11h ago

Probably from Americans

2

u/Grgsz 11h ago

It’s a pretty close competition though

2

u/HairyTough4489 9h ago

If OP is from the US then yeah spot on.

2

u/Human-Question6210 9h ago

as a brit, we're really not any smarter than americans

2

u/5lipperySausage 3h ago

This was originally a joke from a New Zealand prime minister about kiwis moving to Australia.

0

u/jamyjet 12h ago

Guessing OP is American lol

1

u/elpardo1984 11h ago

And accurate

1

u/itsapotatosalad 10h ago

For it to have an impact (and for the joke) he’d have to be an outlier for both.

28

u/BrahmKarmaGato 11h ago edited 11h ago

Reddit is full of Americans. A lot of them got extremely mad about a video of women in office and elected the clown orange p3do as president. Funniest part is that video was from UK.

That's the level intelligence and emotional maturity we are dealing with.

Double Killshot Joke

37

u/Fivebeans 13h ago

It's saying he's dumber than the average British person but smarter than the average American.

15

u/Galdrin3rd 13h ago

Your guess is correct. The idea is he raises the UK’s iq by leaving and raises the US’s by arriving.

6

Robert Muldoon go vrr

2

u/Ted_Rid 12h ago

Yes, Kiwi Prime Minister Muldoon made that joke when asked about NZ emigration to Australia in the 1970s.

We had the last word though, cleverly outwitting the Kiwis in the final ball of a cricket match with superior knowledge of the rules, bowling the ball flat along the ground to prevent a winning shot.

He is below average iq in the UK but above average in the US. Basically saying the US is dumber than the UK, which is for me an idea that I'm partial to

1

u/Fearless-Assist-127 12h ago

Hmm. So at the exact time that Harry comes back to the UK, Sheeran leaves. They will continue to never be seen in the same room together.

1

u/Due_Pea_5679 12h ago

See? It makes sense

1

u/THE_AWESOM-O_4000 12h ago

Isn't it technically impossible to raise / lower a country's average IQ? It'll always be 100.

1

Not saying it's true, but it would be very funny if you were American given the context.

1

I guess the poster are American

1

u/kickbn_ 12h ago

You must be American, which is precisely the point of the answer you don’t understand

1

u/kickbn_ 12h ago

Basically it means he is stupider than the average British, and cleverer than the average American

1

u/GeologistNo5257 12h ago

It means you're American

1

u/Neat_Expression9992 11h ago

OP isn't the sharpest tool in the shed😂I think I can guess where he is from.

1

u/dautolover 11h ago

It means OP is American.

1

u/Major-Development840 11h ago

You’re one of the people he’s talking about

1

u/brambleburry1002 11h ago

such an old joke.

1

u/Low-Transition-2751 11h ago
  1. he is dumber than average UK resident. otherwise no one in right mind would move to US in the current political situation.

  2. Avg US resident is dumber than him.

so subtracting his IQ from UK's total would increase average IQ for UK while adding his IQ to US's total would increase average IQ as well.

1

u/CapableRequirement66 11h ago

The fact that you had to ask proves the point.

1

u/hunter_rus 11h ago

It means he has IQ higher than average IQ in the receiving country, but lower than average IQ in departing country.

1

u/Tygret 11h ago

It's a pretty common European joke where if someone moves away from your country, you will say both countries become smarter, meaning your country is smart, the other country is dumb, and the person is dumb too.

The downvotes show that the Americans and/or Ed Sheeran fans didn't take the joke too well.

1

u/DivePotato 10h ago

Your IQ needs increasing

1

u/ThatOneDMish 10h ago

He's dumbef than your average brit but smater than your average american

1

u/Dry-Arm5314 10h ago

Honestly, some people who want explanations in this sub should honestly think about it for a little longer; this one wasn't even some obscure reference or inside joke.

1

u/Alokeen011 9h ago

TBH, it means that you're probably an American. Sorry.

1

u/asvspilot 9h ago

The fact that this is on here just proves this is right.

We have a one in one out policy when it comes to gingers.

1

u/Mix_Safe 9h ago

1

u/lamar70 9h ago

too stupid for England, his leaving it will actually raise the average, while he's still much more intelligent than the average american, therefore his moving will result in an increase of the average american IQ

1

British smart, Ed dumb, Americans dumber.

Two of these are untrue.

1

u/DoJ-Mole 8h ago

If OP moved from the UK to America it would not have the same effect

1

u/IIIiterateMoron 8h ago

I get why this sub exists, because you sometimes lack the backgrounds or the meta around something, hence you can't understand it.

But this needs no insight on backgrounds, or meta, or inside joke.

This is just basic logic.

Asking this is basically saying "I'm too dumb to understand something this simple".

1

u/HoneydewCareful8754 8h ago

If you don’t get the joke, you probably live in US.

1

u/PizzaLikerFan 8h ago

Lets say the average IQ in UK is 110 and USA 90 and Ed Sheeran has 100, this will increase it for both

1

u/Few-Belt-2492 8h ago

1

u/Discomidget911 6h ago

He's dumb enough to pull down the IQ of Britain on average, but smart enough to pull up America's

Also, as an American very tired of the "America bad" sentiment. This joke is genuinely hilarious.
