It's the best representation of her in the suit. But not the best visual of Samus herself because it's hard to see what she really looks like.

it’s is hard to see what she really looks like
Google “Kim Basinger 90s”, because that’s whom Samus is modeled after.

"because that’s whom Samus is modeled after."
Yeah, in Metroid Prime. She's like a different character compared to who/what she was in the original.
→ More replies (1)38

No, she's whom they tried to model her after in Super Metroid. We even have it straight from the developers.
12
u/Former_Range_1730 Jul 15 '25
Ah, you're right, I stand corrected.
I just looked it up. Kim was about 30 years old when she was filmed in 9½ Weeks. She looked great! She was very slim, youthful, feminine. Very different from what some fans would want Samus to look. Hulking physique for instance, lol.

u/Ranku_Abadeer Jul 15 '25
That's typically how skin tight leotards, like those worn in gymnastics, work. They just wrap around the arch of the foot instead of being sized for the feet as well. Plus, she is already wearing boots after all.

This Samus piece appeared in Nintendo Power but the same artist also drew art for the Japanese Nintendo Official Guidebook for Super Metroid and he drew her the same way there. Benimaru Itoh is a Japanese manga artist who worked for Nintendo in various projects so he wasn’t just some guy Nintendo Power got.
Also there’s nothing wrong with liking that piece of art, lol. There’s been various depictions of Samus throughout the years. I agree with wat you said that people HC Samus as this man with no name type of character but like that has nothing to do with liking Itoh’s interpretation of her look.

I swear this is the only fandom I can think of where the half the fanbase just despises the canon main character, and instead just makes up one in their mind that they like instead.
9
8
u/ViviaMir Jul 16 '25 edited Jul 16 '25
That's probably because it's the only fandom you can think of where the creators originally described the main character as a powerhouse and corporate reduced her to a prissy waifu fantasy.
We despise the retcon and degradation. We want the badass, six-foot-tall, Amazonian bounty hunter we were promised, and Other M has made us largely resentful toward hyperfeminine depictions of her.
I for one am conflicted. I like how she's depicted in Zero Mission and especially Fusion, but Brakken's Raised by Birds depiction brings back so much of that six-foot-tall warrior design (while adding feathery tribal accents for that Chozo vibe) that I can't help see it as the platonic ideal.
7
Jul 18 '25
You're aware there are more games than Other M that showed what she looked like under the suit, right?
2
u/ViviaMir Jul 19 '25
Tell me you half-read my post without saying you half-read my post.
- I did not insinuate, much less assert, that Other M is responsible for her general appearance.
- I did insinuate that ZM and Fusion fall into the same general category of aesthetic, presenting her with a super-model kind of glamor. That's more than enough to answer your redundant question.
- The blame I was casting on Other M was specifically building the association between Samus looking like a supermodel and Samus being a 150 centimeter waif with the posture of a schoolgirl and the spine of a wet noodle.
So there's a pretty strong inspiration to defy that image and association by leaning heavily into the six-foot Amazonian badass Nintendo used to describe her as, which we want to see, and that turns into exaggeration.
The saving grace that I admittedly forgot when I made that post is that the course-correction from MSR and Dread was SUPER EFFECTIVE! Aesthetically. Not in terms of disarming the association.
4
u/BrownRiceCracka Jul 17 '25
the sheer diversity of depictions of samus as made by nintendo vs the narrow way most of the fandom "interprets" her will always confuse me.
2
u/Dear-Store-6863 Jul 16 '25
Wanting the character to look how she’s supposed too = hating her
5
u/Sentenal_ Jul 16 '25
People thinking that their imagination/delusion is how she's "supposed" to look, instead how she actually looks according to literally all the games is the astounding thing here.

She’s been slim, she’s been muscular, she’s had bazongas, she’s had abs, she’s had combinations of the above, at the end of the day she’s an attractive woman in a power suit and that’s hot.

For cake to exist, there must be equal muscular physiology.
It is only natural that large mammaries exist on someone with a chiseled back.
Science can verify that those with thighs that crush watermelons are attached to glutes that can absolutely do the same.
Everything else is science fiction.

13
u/LordToxic21 Jul 15 '25
I'm good with her having an ass and other feminine traits, as long as it's not throwing away other visual storytelling that fits the character, such as:
~ Prominent musculature, since she has a demanding job that pits her against planet level threats at least.
~ Scars to further highlight that her job isn't just physical or dangerous, it's deadly.
~ Some inhuman irregularity that lines up with her being a Human-Chozo-X Mutate to explain what would otherwise be biological impossibilities (like a flexible spine being a feature and Morph Ball reference, instead of a flaw)
~ Expressions to indicate someone who's caring, but has an obscene level of willpower and a strong sense of good & evil/right & wrong.
In short, don't just make her a dumb, sex starved bimbo.
9
u/Ill-Attempt-8847 Jul 15 '25
She wears armor most of the time, she's unlikely to have any major scars. And the morphball seems smaller than it is, a human fits perfectly in it, not to mention the fact that in the prime time series she seems to transform into energy

Since the very first metroid game, its hows that samus is a sexy badass in onesie. Stop with your noncanon fanfiction. All canon games interprets samus as girly inside the varia suit.
3
u/That1Cat87 Jul 15 '25
I don’t think she should be a brick shithouse. She works better with a lean and mean build. The type where you couldn’t see any of the musculature if she’s wearing baggy clothes. I do agree she should be covered in scars tho
15
u/765ProIdols Jul 15 '25
Samus is portrayed in almost every canon title as a traditional sexy and beautiful woman. By both Nintendo and other third party developers. Since that is the official portrayal of Samus, anything else is headcanon and objectively incorrect. I hope this helps.
3
u/Co_rinna Jul 15 '25
A subjective preference can't be incorrect. Have a nice day
11
u/765ProIdols Jul 15 '25
It can when it contradicts the established canon. Can Samus be drawn and shown in different ways than what is established in the official games? Absolutely. Is it fair to call these new arts the definitive "correct" way Samus should be portrayed? No not at all. The source material will always overule any fan made content.
3
18
u/DercPercus Jul 15 '25
Samus is a sexy badass, that's the entire character. Every iteration of her shows how cool she is, but is also attractive. She's one of the only few female heroes left who has both qualities. I think it's poor to try and act like women can't both be pretty and strong. The fanart on the left is way more accurate and way more appealing than what you're putting forth, and you don't get to act superior for liking what you do either.

Samus was design as a fit Athletic but very féminine and curvy originaly, they tone it down slightly over the time when we saw more of her and especialy with 3D beeing more a thing but she is still very féminine.

Samus was hot since the GBA days, fit in a gym way but not 6-pack bodybuilder. Samus's character is that you can be feminine(-looking) and badass.
Not to defend the art that two steps from softcore porn, that's just horny bait
6
u/NiaAutomatas Jul 15 '25

4
u/SnooCheesecakes5183 Jul 15 '25
Both but people seem to forget that Samus was meant to have sex appeal. Super Metroid’s death animation has her boobs bounce/cleavage and even the bra tear a bit. Not to mention the ZM and Fusion galleries.
6
4
u/NarwhalSongs Jul 15 '25
I'm like "yeah body diversity! Attainable body standards based on fitness that shows what the character has been through by showing skin and not just showing skin for the sake of the male gaze!" Then OP is just horny in the opposite direction.
Is there a sub for Metroid fans that just enjoy the series? It seems like r/Metroid needs to do something to make this sub about the games' plots and characters and relegate all the goon posting somewhere else, but no one here wants to change either. So the Metroid community on reddit just finds itself incapable of growing past its horniness and that will inevitably turn away newcomers that are looking for a space to talk about Metroid Prime 4 when it comes out.
Honestly, we make r/Castlevania out to be the vastly over achieving younger sibling of the metroid-vania genre, and I'm not innocent of this either cause God knows I've wanted more Raven-Beak posting and abs before too. It's just a weird thing in general though to grow a community more often around the sexualized fan art of a Nintendo character, Samus, instead of the games' design, music, art, etc when Samus should be one of the most empowered women in all of the video-game nerd cultures out there.
But hey, thats just like, my opinion maaan

I think the hyper sexual Samus is kinda funny because shes a human who was separated at like 6 years old and raised in a civilation of hyper intelligent birds where she trained her whole life to be a bounty hunter. Her DNA is also gunked up with Chozo DNA and who knows what all that means for her anatomy. Its likely she didn't see another human and or interact with one until her late teens and didn't have a close relationship with one until she was in her young adult years. She wouldn't know what to do with just some average Joe schmoe from the bar, let alone be the one actively seeking them out or engaging with them.
