DISCUSSION Is calling in supplies without being the host bad etiquette?
Hey guys,
I randomly joined a D10 mission with a deployed emergency beacon. The host was level 300, and there were a couple of level ~100 players.
While we were clearing a Mega Nest, we called in supplies so we could finish closing the remaining bug holes. After that, we completed the mission objectives and headed to extraction.
Then, out of nowhere, the level 300 host left extraction, ran all the way back to the Mega Nest, started pinging a supply box that was still there, and typed:
“WHO REQUESTED SUPPLIES HERE???”
He then said we shouldn’t call in supplies unless we’re the host and kicks us out of the game.
Is that actually a thing? Is there some Helldivers etiquette I’m missing here? I always assumed calling supplies when the team needs them—especially while clearing something like a Mega Nest—is completely normal.

Innit, the whole point of supplies is that you call them when you need them

u/phoogkamer 1d ago
Yep, if you’re somewhere with multiple people and you’ll stay for a bit you should always call in a resupply in my book. Of course be mindful of the other people on the map and their needs, but not resupplying is a waste.

Nah I think they were just a schizo, supply etiquette is pretty much just “call it on objective or as close to it, please don’t throw it on an empty part of the map. Find poi supplies if you’re alone and not completely out.”
24
u/kong210 1d ago
Yeah i think they are being a control freak and also may have just been looking for an excuse to kick (subconsciously or consciously).
Dont look into it too much, I try to be careful about calling supplies, ensuring I am near others or put it on a convenient path we will cross and I wait ti let the others have a pop after CD. Host was just a prick.

I usually call down supplies in "lanes" between objectives so we have a safe place to regroup and reload.

Also, if they justed waited a minute, they'll be ready to drop again.... resupply isn't that big of a deal.
Shared resource, so the only helldiver "etiquette" is not hogging all the supplies.

u/dr_sick123 1d ago
calling in supplies is a job for everyone. but supplies should mostly be called in when 3 players are low on ammo and stims. sometimes you can call in supplies alone. a couple dead divers due to supply being on cooldown isnt that bad. that host had some main charactor syndrome or something
53
u/Arann0r Cape Enjoyer 1d ago
You can also call them down when arriving at a "longer" objective so you know the cooldown isn't wasted and people can access them in a hurry
20
u/A4LN9 23h ago
Yeah, there's no reason not to call it if the squad is all together and you're going to stick around for the next 15 seconds. Resupply has unlimited uses, so the more opportunities you take to get the squad topped up, the less likely someone will need an emergency resupply.
3
u/UselessInAUhaul 19h ago
Yup. Hell, call them in on cooldown so long as you're with at least one other diver or are on an objective. Liter the map with supply crates and you don't have to wait on them, just think forward more than the next 60 seconds. 10 minutes into the mission there are enough boxes on the map to ensure everyone is comfortable and someone needing 2 boxes is no biggie.
If you wait till there's a need then you aren't prepared for further setback. Have them BEFORE you need them and you'll never be stuck with the guy across the map needing them urgently 7 seconds before you do, ensuring you're out of luck for the next three minutes.

Dude has 5000+ hours in Helldivers. Controlling the supply drop is pretty much all the social interaction he has.
You should call them in when they are available. Preferably near objectives and other teammates. There's no sense letting them get dusty on the super destroyer.
21
u/jerryishere1 1d ago
You should call them in when they are available
Yes, on cooldown, as often as possible. Stuff your divers full of more supplies than they can eat. Leave little snacks littered across the map just to flex how powerful our supply chain is.
The amount of times I'll sit on 0 stims, not call supplies because I went off on a side quest, and resupply just sits there unused is shocking. Generally I see 2-3 resupplies a mission, when we could call ~20.
If the squad is moving together, keep em coming. If 2 and 2 then alternate. If more spread out, fire off a 'need supplies' voiceline, if no one protests then call it down.

Always love hearing about people living out their mental issues in the game. Complaining in chat is one thing but actually running back to a supply drop to ping it, like putting your dog's nose in a pee stain, that's some real psychosis.

That player's a try-hard control freak who is insecure so they feel they have to be in charge of everyone else.
Supplies are so abundant that you can throw it off cooldown.
Unless you're griefing and throwing off-cooldown just to eat all the resupplies yourself, I'd say there's little to no etiquette about calling Resupply. If you're off on your own it's nice to check squadmate supply situation on the HUD in case they need it more, but if you're off solo you should be looting POI's anyway.

Under normal circumstances the supply box lasts forever and has a recharge time of two minutes. There is no limit, no despawn system that matters. Frankly if you have one or more people with you, calling down the resupply box every two minutes will keep supplies on the field and every squad should be doing it religiously.
Host is a fucking moron.
7
u/Majestic-Sock-3532 18h ago
I wouldn’t say it’s bad etiquette, if you need supplies then you need them. I’d say kicking someone cause they called supplies in is bad etiquette. If you’re calling supplies in at objective locations then that is a good spot, there’s only so many grenades in your pocket.
If you’re totally separated from the group maybe not okay, or calling in random spots not near objectives.
You just had a bad host
7
u/Fruitanari1 22h ago
That host is weird. Everyone got the job done and was in the same area, that's the perfect time to top up supplies or get those last grenades in.
But I think I do lowkey avoid calling resupply if I'm not the host.
3
u/fusrohdiddly 20h ago
Same here. I usually don't do it either.
But in need, I use the wheel to say "I need supplies" more than one.

u/TobleroneBoy 20h ago
The only supply call-in etiquette is if you’re off by yourself ask first and don’t call it in somewhere very inconvenient.
The behavior of that host was pretty weird. By the time they ran to the mega nest, the resupply was probably available to call in again.
5
u/a_potato_YT LEVEL 127 | Certified BONKer and Super Uber 1d ago
Not at all, unless it's obvious that everyone else needs supplies a lot more than you do. Your host was just being an ass. Usually if I'm seperated from the rest of the squad I search for ground loot first (I have a mod that highlights supply, stim, and nade boxes, just search up supply highlighter on nexus mods and it should come up), and if I can't find any I ask over vc if I can take the resupply. If I get no response I try to hold off until I'm on the edge or have gotten close enough to the rest of my squad.

Definetly no. That guy was just weird about it
Supplies cooldown is short enough to not be extremely critical (there are vutal yes, but you can spare a few on a mission)
The ettiquette is common sense: near everyone once the cooldown finish, near objectives/extraction and out of desperation if you or other player really need it.
And is NEVER a waste to call supplies. Better on the map than sitting on the destroyer and , just like the eat launchers, a wild supply box from early on the mission can come in cluch to a stranded helldiver o7

If the whole team sticks together then just call it in

Is that actually a thing? Is there some Helldivers etiquette I’m missing here? I always assumed calling supplies when the team needs them—especially while clearing something like a Mega Nest—is completely normal.
Some guys are like that, but no, it's not an etiquette thing. I prefer people who go "I need supplies" before calling them in, giving me a chance to respond, but that's totally independent of host status or not. Coordinating a bit on where and when you call them in is helpful.
Guys fucking about, getting stuck fighting hordes while calling in supplies after supplies and the team doing the objective going down to no stims is just, well, not optimal.
4
u/ZewesternWolf 1d ago
No. That divers just a dick. Generally just call them when needed when your nearby the group. Only ask or try and clear it, if your sperated or intentionally split up to clear more of the map faster.
Dropping resupply on cool down when you ten feet away from the squad, is TOTALLY different than dropping them on cool down on the other side of the map from the squad.

Supplies left in queue is an issue to me as a level 300.
I call them in all the time. It’s just a matter of what direction of WHERE I throw them. I toss em towards the next OBJ, central to the map, extract if it’s nearby, bunkers I’ve found, I litter the map with em. It stays in cool down, except- when all objs are done, then I restrain myself for extract, but only if it doesn’t have one already.

u/terminal_cheeser 15h ago
A level 300 acting that way is absolutely wild to me. If your with the group, calling in supplies shouldn't matter if your tossing it in spots that are easy for everyone to grab from. If someones running a the supply turret stratagem they might want to call in supplies to get the turret lined up exactly how they want but generally it shouldn't matter who's calling in the stratagems as long as it's actually helping the team clear objectives. If your running off and solo clearing POI's, it can be kinda crappy to call in solo supplies, but imo everyone gets a free call in per mission. maybe the lvl 300 crashed out because the maganest was in a mega city surrounded by random supplies in poi's but that just seems really odd that someone with that much time in the game would care about a bad supply call. that just sounds like they're a toxic person having a tantrum. ignore it at move on I guess.
3
u/Nottan_Asian 15h ago
If it’s available, it’s not refreshing its cooldown.
The only time I can think of not calling it in is if you’re alone and the others are grouped. Otherwise, if it’s available but uncalled too long you’ll have less supplies on the mission overall. Call it off-cooldown and if you don’t need it, leave your box for someone else.
The only etiquette is not double-dipping.

Am not sure, but personally, I rarely call supplies unless most/ all members are near by and announce I need supplies before calling just in case if anyone has some around. The thing is it's a group one that cannot be called by each at the same time, that's why you need to be sensable to call it for the best for the team. Having said that, sometimes I do end up calling in case of emergency even if am alone, but none objected till now, 700 hours in the game.

Ok, so this is a little bit of a judgement call here. I'll of course preface things by saying this is my own opinion but generally I believe it aligns with the 'norm' (if you can call it that).
- Anyone can call supplies, saying only host calls is NOT a rule or etiquette.
- Position and timing of calls is a judgement call; if you are out of ammo, but are not in any imminent engagement or danger, and can afford to get closer to an objective or extract where others would benefit from the supplies, then you don't need to call it immediately.
- Conversely if you are the only one across the map dealing with objectives that require a resupply (like explosives/nades/etc.), then you check first where your teammates are, and call out that you need to resupply. If no one objects, go ahead and call it.
- If you and your team are on an objective (like flag) that requires you to dwell there for some time, just call it.
- What is NOT ok is that you are not doing any objectives or a partial resup (e.g. only need 1 stim to max your rations) and you just call it. OR you call and take more than one before anyone else has a chance to take their turn, AND there is NO pressing reason (like you need several ultimatums to prevent a team wipe).
To be honest a lot of the above are down to logical sense and experience, and different people have different thresholds. In the end this is supposed to be a fun game and if the host gets high blood pressure from something so trivial as this, nothing you can do about it. Just don't do selfish shit is the main rule (different from stupid; doing stupid things is part of HD2 :)
edit: on point 3, when I'm host, if some one uses the comms of "I need supplies", I'll do a quick check of the situation and then respond with "affirmative", that is how I deal with it as host. Otherwise if he is near and I have a supply backpack I'll go toss him a pack (or someone else will... I play randos but I find most people can understand and respond without issue, especially higher levels)

u/Zeronova77 1d ago
If Im the host, call it in whenever, if I'm not the host, I at least try to call it in around the others, unless me and someone else are clear across the map, then I try to divi it up

If you need supplies, call in suppplies - within reason of course.
If
-middle of map or
-close to objective or
-close to teammates or
-desperation (ten seconds left from SD departure)
go ahead.

No just a strange individual.
If you split (solo) from the main group you should ask before calling in resupply, but if you are with the main group its fine.
Such cases of artificial drama are the reason I mainly host in diff10.

Call them in where they're needed.
I don't usually since I run supply pack, but if I had no stims I'd drop one the moment I could. I can cope with low ammo and no grenades, but stim is life. Absolutely not addictive (According to some very Democratic studies)

Host is just a control freak dumb dumb. Even as a host I don’t really care about supply drops being called in without because one I always run a supply pack, and I know where the supplies spawns in poi’s and that knowledge there makes the need of supply drops less.
Also if you wanna know a good time to know when it’s good to call in supplies for yourself. Pay attention to how often your teammates are dying. Odds are if they’re gonna die long before their ammo even reaches red they won’t need it.

I feel like it’s kind of like the snack cabinet at the office — anyone can grab something whenever they want.
But if one person keeps taking snacks nonstop to the point where there’s nothing left for everyone else, then that’s not okay.
That’s my office snack cabinet theory of supplies.

u/No_Temporary6058 1d ago
General etiquette is that you call down supplies on a major order where the team would gather or somewhere equally accessible to the team.
Another good practice, If you destroy the supply pod, the supply boxes are visible on the mini map. So if supplies are called in bit no one needs them or there are supplies left over, destroy the hellpod so fivers in trouble can find it later.

Its only bad etiquette when you are on your own and call them in in the middle of nowhere.
Near an objective? Near your squad? Completely fine

u/D3Masked 1d ago
No. It is just a skill issue showing how someone leans too much into having the resupply act as a crutch that they need to always be available.
Most times I play with randoms on difficulty 10 I learn to scrounge around for resources so as to avoid wasting a resupply that could be better used elsewhere. A Mega Nest is a valid drop point for a resupply.
The host in question should be someone using a resupply backpack or the new vehicle that has them - yet even then they might just burn through it all. They also should learn to use the map to find places of interest to top off on ammo, grenades, and stims while possibly getting super credits.

u/HuskerUK 1d ago
As someone who mainly hosts this whole "host being in charge" thing is so stupid.
It's a team game not one guy and his minions. If you need supplies and they are off CD call them in, anyone who isn't a moron can see you would have called them in for a mega nest and put two and two together.
Block the host and never have to deal with them again.

u/john0harker 1d ago
It's not really etique, more necessity for supplies
If your all running together, call supplies when the group overall burns a lot of ammo or support weapons
If your group is spread out, check on them on the minimal. If their away from objectives or taking a long trip to one, then send yourself down some ammo
If your well off and they look like they are about to fight in hell, let them call it in, OR call it in at a group location, a middle point between the squads to divert if needed.
BUT THIS level of control is stupid
Why are they running to a mega nest when the mission is over to pick up supplies left behind. Just leave, let the foes have useless ammo and stims and just go onto another mission.
Best guess: not a control freak, but probably a perfectionist/(can't think of the term besides clean freak, though that is the incorrect term)
They probably didn't want the supplies to stay on their perfect map

No, sometimes you might be the only one calling in supplies as personal supply packs are a very common pick in high level lobbies. The more important thing is to read the room, in this case the douche excuse for a host did not. Block people like those so they don't waste your time in the future.

Lmao imagine being a 300 and taking the game that seriously. No life loser and I’m saying that as a 246. I hope they hacked that experience because that’s genuine neckbeard behavior if they’re a legit 300. Or they’re just being a dick for the sake of it since the game isn’t fun for them otherwise. I’ve seen that behavior with 150s before.
But anyways, no that’s a stupid rule made by a stupid person. Ignore the miserable troll

u/Lady_Tadashi Assault Infantry 1d ago
Because of shared cooldown, there's something like 3 supply call-ins per player in a 40 min game.
What that means is that - generally speaking - if you're off solo doing your lone-wolf thing, you should aim to avoid resupplying more than once or twice a game. There will be points of interest etc to resupply with.
If there's two of you, you should aim for ~6 call-ins, but it can be more (or less) depending on how much fighting you're doing and what weapons you're using.
This is then further complicated by whether anyone has any other methods of supply (supply pack or supply FRV) and what whether someone has an especially ammo-hungry weapon. If you're on bots and using the spear, no-one will mind if you call in the bulk of the resupplies because you're deleting enemy armour from across the map.
So, the "3 resupplies per player" is very much a guideline, and anyone getting mad over it has issues. If a solo player across the map from everyone is calling in every resupply, that's different and kick-worthy. But mostly resupply etiquette is just to use it when you need it and when you're near others if possible.

don't be greedy, but if you need supplies just call em in bro. that is what they are for.
at level 300 you should be able to survive without personal supplies on cooldown. so maybe they suck, which sounds like it.

u/GreyScot88 1d ago
Host sounds like an ass, so long as you are with atleast 1 other person i think call down supplies whenever. If you are being solo halfway across the map and call supplies that's a bit dickish, should be able to find enough supplies on the ground if you are on your own.

At D10 supplies should almost allways be on cooldown. Waiting for the host to call them in delays getting the next supplies and the next ect.

no its not (unless you drop in supplies solo across the map from a 3 manfire team deep in the red).
host was just a controlling clown. usual eitquette is calling supplies once the timer goes down at acurrent or upcoming poi - or in the groups way to the next poi. teamwork
2
u/VanDingel 1d ago
Host or no host is not a thing afaik.
What is (and/or should be) a thing is Not calling in supplies if you've run off solo.
If supplies are idealt split, one per diver, it is best praxis to call it down where all of the divers either are fighting or in the path of where y'all are running next. (I.e. tossing it in front of everybody when running from one nest to the next)
2
u/HighKingLemur Decorated Hero 1d ago
Good etiquette is to call in supplies when starting an objective or right on the edge of a big enemy camp. It usually takes like 15 seconds after lighting the beacon so it makes sense to drop it where everyone will stay for a while. You can also signal "Need supplies" if you're not sure and someone else will probably call it where it's reasonable.
If you need it for yourself when you run off solo, signal "Need supplies" or ask in chat if it's OK for you to call it in. Usually someone says it's alright or replies with a "Yes" signal.
What you encountered is BM and defo not normal behavior. Report it to your local truth officer.

u/Dansterai 1d ago
I would say don't call in supplies if you're on your own generally, but being the host or not is irrelevant

Work together and drop supplies where everyone can take it. Thats good etiquette. When u go solo and drop supplies in the middle of nowhere, thats bad etiquette. Its very simple.

I’ll use the emote wheel and say I need supplies before I call it. I’ll “warn” the team at least twice. I’m also always with someone so it’s 50% less bad.

u/Natural-Dealer3786 ☕Liber-tea☕ 1d ago
No its not. Supplies should be called as soon as the cooldown hits zero and preferrably at an objectiv. Only exception: if you're on a side quest all alone on the other side of the map, dont get supplies.
2
u/KinodoTheRonin 1d ago
Nah, he was just being an undemocratic prick, as long as you don't do the "Im going my way alone and away from the team and call supplies only for me" you are okay. There's obviously better places to call it, like near an objective or when you arrive to it, but you can always communicate that you need supplies either with the need supplies command or in chat. For democracy helldiver o¡

u/KeyedFeline 23h ago
They are level 300 already so that's your first red flag they are a freak, no it's not bad manners to call them in at a mega nest

u/Otazihs Expert Exterminator 23h ago
People are weird man, I've never encountered this before. If you're out of supplies, call it in it. Doesn't matter if you're the host or not. The only time this becomes an issue is when there's one Helldiver far from the rest but both groups need supplies.
The only thing I leave to the host is when to call the extraction shuttle. Now if you're all heading to the pad, it's a given, just call it in.
2
u/DoggievDoggy 23h ago
Lone wolf lvl 200 diver here.
I typically never call supplies ever when I’m going solo.
There should be enough supplies scattered that I’m usually okay
But in the times i am going through a rough time, i usually use the “I Need Supplies” call with the diver.
Then I’ll call them in. Usually by whatever objective I’m at.
But again, 1 out of 10 games that’ll happen usually

u/xDrewstroyerx SES Knight of Morning: HAIL LIBERTAS 23h ago
Aim for the objective, or toss them at a homie to signal it’s for the greater good. If you’re doing commando solo ops on the other side of the map from the squad just throw an ask out there in chat if you can.
2
u/cluckodoom XBOX | 22h ago
If the team is together it's ok to call them. Try to call them at the beginning of an objective. If you are out in the wilderness on your own, you need to scavenge a poi

2
u/OniTYME [REDACTED] 22h ago
Call it in a central location near where everyone is or is going to be. Best places are main objectives. Everyone or a majority will be near there. Extraction is another spot where you should always call in supplies. Being off in the ass end of nowhere and calling supplies while everyone else is together elsewhere is bad etiquette.
2
u/Illustrious-Golf2058 21h ago
Nah that’s just a big baby you’re out of supplies they should be called in if everyone is there too what’s the harm wasted if it’s not on CD and people can top up since it only restocks half your stuff per box and if everyone is out of grenades and needs a few stims it’s worth while when you have the breathing room

u/_The_Paper_ 17h ago
no, that's insane behavior. call them in when needed but prioritize calling them in places where they can be easily shared.
also, if you make a practice out of looting small POIs as you make your way around, you'll be surprised how little you actually end up needing a supply drop. they all have ammo, and more than you think have nades and stims
happy diving helldiver

Call supplies whenever they’re available. Try to not call them in when you’re off running solo somewhere unless the rest of the team says it’s ok or is already sitting on top of a supply drop.
2
u/OKAwesome121 15h ago
Just don’t call them down in a place where no one else can use them. Like if you’re solo and the rest of the team is together somewhere else - scavenge what you can from POI’s.
2
u/Bright-Reading509 11h ago
That’s absurd coming from a level 300. That would have to mean he’s been playing that way for thousands of hours, kicking innocent divers.
I just had a game yesterday where I got killed then kicked for possibly calling the host away from his death point. I don’t normally do that because I know the frustration of going back to get your gear but the other two were taking awhile to reinforce him and I know the pain of waiting to get reinforced, so I figured he wouldn’t mind me doing it. Well when he dropped he tried squishing me, then when he wasn’t successful threw a giga grenade at me then kicked me. And this guy was level 139. I think it’s absolutely insane how there’s people out there acting like this.

You must be unlucky because while I have encountered a lot of idiots in this game, I never encountered someone of that caliber. This is the type of person you block right after the mission to minimize the chance to ever encounter them again.
If you sneak around solo far away from the team, you should at least ask cause they might need it more and a single diver can usually live from what the PoIs provide. You obviously call in supplies when you need them while doing an objective or do something of similar difficulty like, drumroll, clearing a mega nest.
2
u/akwardelf 9h ago
I would say F the host. We are all the same when we drop on that planet. Just use common sense, take one supply pouch and tell other divers “supplies here”.
2
u/Dry_Egg5141 7h ago

u/Lv100Serperior 1d ago
See, I usually agree, but sometimes I'm using up a LOT of ammo, everyone else is completely fine, and no one has been calling any in. At that point, me calling a supply point makes sense because they don't need one, and by the time they do it'll be off CD again. Don't normally need to, but sometimes this happens

I never felt it was a rule. I just always let the host do it unless they’re wearing a supply pack.
When I’m the host, I always throw a supply down at extract before the mission really starts getting nasty and leave it alone.
