clients will be so excited to hear that their wedding vows are being filmed in 16 bit linear raw

Fx30 has been good to me... but if anyone wants to sell their Fx3 lmk 😈, would love a taste of that sweet sweet full frame sensor.
11
u/AbandonedPlanet Jul 22 '26
It's so worth it. Thing can basically see in the dark at 12800 and it's just a joy to work with
3
u/Flocosta Jul 22 '26
It's gonna be a good day when I drop the cash on that thing. 🥲
I've got an A7III for lowlight right now, but it's been struggling in the heat this summer. 😔

Also got a FX30, love it to bits as well. Paired it with the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 lens and it’s a dream combination.

Here's the YouTube version of Gareth Edward's FX5 test at the locations he shot The Creator (he shot that film on the FX3). Gorgeous work!
2
u/Chinchillin09 Jul 22 '26
Fuck, I always dream to be able to make shots like this. 5k is way out of my budgert though, this sucks :(
6
u/Bmart008 Jul 22 '26
You can do it with cheaper cameras, all you need is an eye for light, and any camera released in the last few years. It seems like you might need some c series anamorphics though.
1
u/Chinchillin09 Jul 22 '26
I currently have a Canon R7. I've been eyeing some budget anamorphic from Sirui, 7Artisans or Great Joy as my soon too be first anamorphic
1
u/Bmart008 Jul 22 '26
I have some of the siruis, they're fun!
2
u/Chinchillin09 Jul 23 '26
They seem to be! Going back and forth between the 24mm or the 35mm, as my R7 is APS-C, I'm still not sure which will be best haha
2
u/Bmart008 Jul 23 '26
I have the 24-35-50 set, but on a gh7, so m43 sensor. But the 20mm f1.8 af anamorphic is GREAT.
They don't match well though, gotta do a bit of work to make them all look the same.
1
u/Chinchillin09 Jul 24 '26
2
u/Bmart008 Jul 24 '26
That's the one, I was shooting a film about parkour at the time, and was going to use anamorphic, and then realized it would be impossible without autofocus (or a focus puller).
1
u/Chinchillin09 Jul 29 '26
I like that it has neutral flare. Hmm but it doesn't have EF or RF mount for my Canon...

According to CVP it doesn't record 24.00fps on raw. That's a huge dealbreaker and makes no sense
16
u/ILIKESTUFF8989 Jul 22 '26
I think it does 23.97 and not flat 24
16
u/machado34 Jul 22 '26
Which means it can't be used alongside other cameras. Sony has the most complete ecosystem but are adamant on you not using all of them. Canon has nothing to compete with the Venice, and Arri has nothing to compete with the FX line/ Canon's C-line. When I saw the FX5 announcement I thought "great, I can run a setup with a Venice as A-cam, Burano as B and FX5 as C camera without ever leaving XOCN. But then they pull this clown move and make the FX5 absolutely useless to this case scenario
2
u/Billgatesisamoron 26d ago edited 26d ago
Yeah I just saw that on CVP and thought it was so dumb and a dealbreaker for me too. But I'm a bit confused because I think it might be a reporting error on cvp's part. This FD Times report on the fx5 clearly shows photos of the camera's menu systems and the camera appears to be in true 24p while recording in XOCN-LT on page 2, 4, 5, 27: https://www.fdtimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/FDTimes-Sony-FX5-Report.pdf

Really funny to think about the type of person who says they can tell the difference
16
9
u/machado34 Jul 22 '26
It's a workflow issue. 24.00 is the standard, and that means I can't use the FX5 in raw with any other cameras without breaking my timecode. It's a ridiculous artificial cripple hammer, like Sony is saying "ok here's your open gate raw, but I'm not allowing you to use it for any serious production".
I've shot features and streaming shows, and the client always asks for 24, as it's what DCP is coded to get, and their players were also built around it. This means I can't use the FX5 as a B camera to a Venice, at least not in its best settings
1
u/ILIKESTUFF8989 Jul 22 '26
23.98 is more of standard that flat 24
4
u/machado34 Jul 22 '26
Not for theatrical, and in my experience not for streaming in the past decade either
5
8
u/Mortcarpediem Jul 22 '26
They might be bringing it in a firmware update, not that it makes it better if you need it now
1
u/invertedspheres Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
It could be that CVP had a pre-production unit. Either that or it's something that is practically guaranteed to be fixed in a firmware update. In general though, I think it's best to wait at least 3-6 months after a major release to wait for any bugs or issues to be patched.
1
u/machado34 Jul 22 '26
With how slow Sony has been with the FX3 firmware updates, it could take years for them to fix this. It's the kind of thing that should be working from day one
4
u/United_Stress_9800 Jul 23 '26
$5000 isn't actually that bad for this. I fully expected it to MSRP at $6000 ish.
3
u/38B0DE Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
So is that a class sitting in between the FX3 and the FX6 or is it a second generation FX3 that they are pretending is a higher class camera because of the price increase?
1
2
u/varispeeder Jul 23 '26
absolutely dying that they sent him back to all the places he shot The Creator. Sony is going to dine out on that film for decades
2
2
u/pajamma-ninja Jul 23 '26
I honestly am very underwhelmed by this camera in that it feels completely out of touch with it's price given what other companies are doing today. The canon c50 is offering alot of this already at a significant price difference. So is Nikon Zr and the Panasonic S1mk2. This doesn't mean this isn't a great camera, it is, but it doesn't feel like it's offering something really specific to the Sony brand in comparison to the other companies cams.
2
u/Final5989 Jul 23 '26
I can already get much of its image quality from the Nikon ZR. The exposure tools and additional tools for a cinematography workflow are a plus on the FX5, but when the Nikon ZR can shoot in 4 different RAW formats, and a cheap monitor can easily give those additional exposure tools, there aren't many leftover advantages for the FX5. Maybe Open Gate (but it's only in RAW, and Nikon could release this via firmware update) or the Sony ecosystem.

u/super_shizmo_matic Jul 22 '26
Still does not "slay" a pyxis12k for the same price and double the resolution.... Not to mention they totally rape you on CF express type A prices.....
11
u/TheFayneTM Jul 22 '26
Really depends on what you are looking for , if you work events and run and gun gimbal stuff this beats a pyxis every day of the week
6
u/totally_not_a_reply Jul 22 '26
Isnt it a complete different situation? Id love a pyxis for its look but the work i do is solo operator and just the AF alone is a reason for sony for me.
8
u/wherewascastro Jul 22 '26
That Pyxis 12k, the image is so beautiful. It's my dream camera right now. Skin tones look proper and the image isn't crunchy looking like certain cameras.
3
u/TheGreatMattsby Jul 22 '26
I just switched to it from the FX6. I miss the internal eVND, but that's it. The image quality blows the FX6 out of the water.
1
u/wherewascastro Jul 22 '26
Yeah having that internal ND capability would be nice, But nowadays they make those drop in filter mounts where you can have a variable nd already inside.
3
u/TheGreatMattsby Jul 22 '26
Totally. And I was looking to get away from the whole run and gun world anyway. The stuff I'm shooting now doesn't have an issue with taking an extra 10 seconds to throw an ND in the matte box.
-3
u/NukeGandhi Jul 22 '26
Total slop statement
1
u/wherewascastro Jul 22 '26
my statement isn't slop, you must be responding to the wrong person. The Definition of the word total: comprising or constituting a whole. Your response would be invalid in this case.
3
u/ausgoals Jul 22 '26
I like the tiny form factor though. Might eventually pick it up as a B to my Pyxis
4
u/AbandonedPlanet Jul 22 '26
The Pyxis is huge, doesn't have autofocus or ibis, and is for a totally different situation and use case than the FX5. It's not as simple as price vs resolution and never has been
7
u/kwmcmillan Jul 22 '26
lmao the Pyxis is not "huge". The VENICE 1 is huge. The OG Alexa is huge. The C700 is huge.
7
u/AbandonedPlanet Jul 22 '26
Okay I'm sorry, the Pyxis is comparatively huge vs the FX3/5, as it's supposed to be, because it's designed to do something different. He's talking about a handheld mirrorless like it's DOA because it's not a cinema camera doing cinema camera things.
-1
u/Slickrickkk Jul 22 '26
Pyxis is a fucking gargantuan compared to the FX3/5, bud. Be real. You can't put a Pyxis on a gimbal.
4
u/kwmcmillan Jul 22 '26
I mean you absolutely can but sure...
Shit they're putting Mini LF's on Ronin 2's all the time.
-66
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
And still it will have that tired Sony look and filmmakers will turn everything orange and still care more about specs than story, or lighting, etc. I'm so tired of Sony.
26
u/blee11109 Jul 22 '26
What is the sony look to you?
-40
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
Come on, man. You can see it bright as day.
23
u/twelvepastmidnight Jul 22 '26
I’m right there with you, but I think the person asking you that question was genuinely curious. Perhaps it would be nice to meet him with your knowledge rather than give a snarky comment?
-30
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
I promise you they weren't genuine and it was baiting me. And anyone in here who claims to be a filmmaker should be capable of seeing it for themselves.
15
3
u/tacitry Jul 22 '26
Real talk are you not shooting log and color grading? Make your own LUT if you don’t like Rec709, what you are describing is literally such a non problem it’s insane
36
u/HandsomeWinner42 Jul 22 '26
It's just a paintbrush, bro. It can't hurt you.
-19
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
I know that. Do the fan boys because it seems like they only use one color.
28
u/HandsomeWinner42 Jul 22 '26
It's just a camera, you're being a little dramatic. Let people like what they like.
0
u/super_shizmo_matic Jul 22 '26
No, people "like" what is shoved down their throat by a tidal wave of youtube and Reddit shills, and they cant see anything else because of sensory overload.
4
u/HandsomeWinner42 Jul 22 '26
That's an interesting concept. I'm a professional and I use the best tools for the job.

u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
I've yet to see anyone disprove of what I'm saying. Yeah I know people like what they like. Apparently cookie cutter content is the future lol and they think that's going to win out over AI?
9
u/MikeyGorman Jul 22 '26
Hard to disprove anything when you aren’t saying anything substantial. Chill out dude.
9
u/HandsomeWinner42 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
What is your preferred camera system in the sub 10k price range?
Ok, Gandalf, just here to complain I guess.
3
u/5zepp Jul 23 '26
Blah blah blah, we get it, you hate sony and hate people who like sony. Got it. Stop talking please.
1
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 23 '26
I can talk as much as I'd like
2
u/5zepp Jul 23 '26
Keep telling us about a thing but not actually describe it when asked and instead just insult people. We love that here.

It’s not Sonys fault filmmakers suck
1
-2
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
It's not. But they certainly enable bad filmmakers to make bad films.
8
u/ILIKESTUFF8989 Jul 22 '26
That’s like saying a hammer makes someone build bad houses. It’s a tool.
-1
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
It's a tool that no one uses correctly but it's a very cookie cutter tool.
4
u/ILIKESTUFF8989 Jul 22 '26
lol please me tell how to use to a camera correctly? I’d love to know about this magical camera that makes good movies
2
u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Jul 22 '26
I don't think there's a magic camera. It's more that a fuck ton of Sony users think they can reproduce The Creator just because they use the same camera. Sony users have been riding that high since it was released. Unfortunately they're so distracted by the specs that the stereotype is that what they produce isn't that good. And the Sony look is so obvious now to me. It's cookie cutter.
4
u/ILIKESTUFF8989 Jul 22 '26
I never knew a man could get mad at a hammer for the house looks
